Why does Taylor Swift lie about her real estate holdings all the time?

Some people believe Taylor Swift can do no wrong, that everything that comes out of her ruby red lips is nothing but the angel-kissed truth, and that Swifty’s flawless honesty dances around with butterflies and kittens. I am not one of those people. In fact, it’s always bothered me on those rare occasions when Taylor is publicly caught up in a lie, because on those rare occasions, the lies serve no purpose. Earlier this week, Taylor tweeted this:

Just one of Taylor’s hits on the “tabloids” for making up stories about her, nevermind the fact that she and her friends call up the tabloids to spread certain agendas, or was the whole Jake Gyllenhaal drama just a fantasy concocted by Us Weekly? So, Taylor wants everyone to know that while SOME PEOPLE are spreading terrible real-estate-buying rumors and wedding rumors about her, she’s just getting on with her business. Except the mansion story is true.

Taylor Swift scoffed at reports she didn’t buy the legendary, $25 million, Samuel L. Goldwyn estate in Bev Hills, but we checked the tax records and the paper trail leads right to her doorstep!

Taylor went on social media Tuesday to shoot down stories she bought the late movie mogul’s estate. She said, “What the press says I’m doing: Buying a Bev Hills mansion, getting married in an English castle. What I’m doing: Playing a show in St. Louis.”

So we checked the property records. We found out today, Thursday, October 1, 2015, title to the estate changed hands from the seller to a company that’s headquartered in Nashville. The address of the business goes right back to Taylor’s Nashville address.

[From TMZ]

Why lie about it when no one really cared? Why go on Twitter to mock the reports of the real estate purchase when you were really making a real estate purchase?

A little piece of gossip history: Taylor covered the April 2013 issue of Vanity Fair, which was pretty much Peak Crazy Swifty. She had just come off a year where she dated a guy who was still in high school (Conor Kennedy), then had on-and-off drama with Harry Styles, which really seemed like it ended badly when he broke up with her and she stalked him for a few months. Remember all of that? I was reminiscing as I glanced through this 2013 interview, which was full of “unnamed sources” slamming Styles all over the place. But I bring it up because once again, Taylor LIED TO A REPORTER about a real estate purchase.

In response to the rumors that Swift was looking to buy a house next to the home of her then boyfriend Conor Kennedy’s family in Hyannis Port, Swift tells Sales, “People say that about me, that I apparently buy houses near every boy I like—that’s a thing that I apparently do. If I like you I will apparently buy up the real-estate market just to freak you out so you leave me.” Swift continues, “One of these things I say to myself to calm myself down when I feel like it’s all too much. . . If there’s a pregnancy rumor, people will find out it’s not true when you wind up not being pregnant, like nine months from now, and if there’s a house rumor, they’ll find out it’s not true when you are actively not ever spotted at that house.”

But Sales reports that Swift actually did purchase the house. According to someone close to the situation, she had been viewing the property with her parents for over a year under the recommendation of Rory Kennedy. In November 2012, the Cape Cod Timesreported the house had been sold to Ocean Drive LLC for $4.8 million. The company’s filing papers name a certain “Jesse P. Schaudies” of 13management—Taylor Swift’s management company. Schaudies did not return calls made to 13management’s offices, but according to the source, the Hyannis Port house was recently resold. “It was like a house-flip,” the source says. “A good short-term investment.”

[From Vanity Fair]

Why does Taylor Swift lie about her real estate? Don’t say it’s because she has crazy stalkers or whatever – clearly, the best way to handle public interest in her real estate holdings would be to simply never confirm or deny any real estate purchases either way. Another great idea? Don’t real estate stalk your current or former boyfriends. To be fair, I don’t think she is currently real-estate stalking anyone with the Beverly Hills home purchase. But it does make you think twice about all of the stories about Taylor buying a Scottish castle to be closer to Calvin Harris, right?

Maybe she meant the press should talk about her work v where she lives/what she’s buying?

    25 million for a house – wtf.

    • Allie says:

If she wants the press to only talk about her work versus her personal life, maybe she shouldn’t call the paps every time she steps out of her house or post a million things about her “friends” and “boyfriends”, etc. can’t have your cake and eat it too. Girl loves the attention. I wish more people would call her out on her lies, because there are quite a few.

    • Louise says:

ill add this here – is it common knowledge that Taylor had an affair with Ryan Adams when he was still married to Mandy? Lainey has hinted at it more than once – including today – and Taylor sure is promoting the heck out of his remake of 1989. I know she benefits from that financially but it just seems like there could be more personal reasons for it if the gossip is correct.

Imagine Mandy came out and accused her of cheating with her husband!!!

      • InvaderTak says:

That wouldn’t affect Ryan much, except that he’d lose whatever respect from music fans he has left, but it would seriously hurt her. Bottom line, I think Mandy is too classy to say anything. And if it hadn’t been swifty it would have been someone else.

      • Louise says:

Yeah, it’s not worth the harassment she would get from the Swifties and probably the heavy duty lawyer letters she would get from Taylor Swift LTD. This makes me dislike Taylor – i’m not gonna judge her for having a fling with Ryan, this goes on all the time and he was the one who was married – that’s her prerogative, but the fact that she recently talked about having a moral code and judging her friends on their moral code seems insanely hypocritical. You would think that having been through a complicated situation herself she would be less judgy … but more than anything, i will judge her and Ryan for rubbing Mandy’s face in it with the new album. Both of them are d#cks!

      • Halvin Carris says:

Link please… I couldn’t find the latest smudge on this sparkly fairy princess rainbow unicorn. Poor “Adam”. All he wanted outta this was a seat in the front row(a seat at the cool kids table).

      • layla says:

        @Halvin Carris

        From Lainey’s opening today:
“Taylor Swift is in Toronto tonight for the first of two shows. Ryan Adams is in town too so that’s a possibility, considering he remade her entire album and, um, well, some other things….. “

      • Spencer says:

I really doubt she hooked up with R.Adams because she is not into “men”.

      • Hally says:

Oooooo, now this is juicy. I don’t know if I believe it tho, not because I think Swifty wouldn’t mess with someone else’s man, I think she would, I just don’t see how she would’ve kept it quiet. But I hope it’s not true for Mandy’s sake, I love her!

    • Hudson Girl says:

Yeah, I got the same impression- not that she was denying it- but, that her work/tour was the only truly important news worth reporting about her.

I don’t like her music but, get that $$$, girl.

    • LadyMTL says:

The house used to belong to Samuel Goldwyn (the G in MGM) and so that’s part of the reason why it’s so expensive…historical value and etc. Also, it looks absolutely gorgeous, lol.

As for her lies / hiding the truth / whatever you want to call it, I’m not surprised. She always struck me as the type of person who wants to control every aspect of her life, be it on-stage or off. So having someone else leak a story about her would probably automatically elicit a denial. Do I think it’s a big deal? Not really.

    • DrM says:

This is what I took Ms S to mean as well. As in ”I’m working – write about that”. Not anyone’s business what she buys, where she goes etc. And buying property is a private act, why should she have to disclose anything. I say lie away Taylor, no one’s business but yours.

  2. We Are All Made of Stars says:

Why lie about innocuous things when you make a living spreading nonsense and half-truths about everything and everybody under the sun? When everyone sees you at the property nine months from now, we’ll all know it’s the truth.

  3. Don't kill me I'm French says:

my first though was “I don’t care” then ” she overreacts” and finally ” she is hiding something ”
If someone has a conspiracy theory,I am with you

  4. Sullivan says:

I wonder how many people would graduate from social media stalking to real estate stalking if they had that kind of money. Especially if there’s a return on the investment.

    • sofia says:

      Did you call me? ^_^

(I found out yesterday that Sienna Millers’ house in London is for sale because I had a folder with images of that house before she bought it and recognized it in her funny video for vogue – I love that kitchen – and yesterday in my weekly stalking I recognized it again. Bam! And the Daily Mail didn’t write about it yet.) I would would to be payed for real estate stalking:D

  5. Felice. says:

Why the f you lyin? Why you always lyin? Mmmm oh my god, stop f-Ing lyin!

  6. Fluff says:

Who cares. She’s right to try to keep her real estate dealings secret.

    • phlyfiremama says:

Exactly. Because it isn’t anyones business what her business is, that’s why she lies about it!! Sounds like she is a pretty savvy business woman~you should ALWAYS make a profit on real estate transactions!!!

  7. Shambles says:

I feel like she just wanted an excuse to tweet something clever and bitchy about the press, just because she is *ugh* like #soaboveit because she’s the coolest girl in the lunchroom.

  8. Abbott says:

She lies when she can’t control the story.

  9. suzanne says:

I think her makeup artist dislikes her as much as I do.

    • justagirl says:

Yes, that’s not a great look. Tho it’s a perfect example of the various possible applications of contouring!

  10. Div says:

I have a hard time believing Taylor’s business people are that stupid to not have shell corporation upon shell corporation when buying property. So I’m kind of doubting the TMZ story……Who knows though? Maybe she lies because she hopes people will forget she lives in a certain house?

  11. Tiffany :) says:

“The address of the business goes right back to Taylor’s Nashville address.”

This makes no sense to me. Celebs don’t put their home address as the address for their business. They put the address of their accountant or business manager’s office. There would be many other companies associated with that address, so I don’t see how they can distinguish that this is for Swift. Something smells odd about how the info was phrased.

  12. sarah says:

I don’t understand what real-estate stalking is? Is it literally buying houses next to you’re crush, boyfriend, or ex? And then what? Seems expensive and a too-obvious-to the person you’re stalking-to not be creepy as hell

  13. Hawkeye says:

Taylor Swift is a successful person, but why does she want us to forget that she’s in a business? There’s no shame in the hustle. I think she and her business team have a stellar sense of what sells. In my opinion, she’s a below-average singer and song writer, but she has somehow managed to harness and convincingly project what we all wish we were in high school: popular, fun, tons of friends, nice clothes, and making ART (insert Celine Dion lunge and chest thump here) for a living. I also think there’s a lot of “if you dream hard enough, YOU TOO can be a super popstar!” peddling that’s part of her appeal. Nothing about networking, making shrewd decisions, investing, and having good people in your business circle to trust. I mean, she’s 25 years old and I basically think of her as a high school student, and I think that’s by design.

    • BlancheDB says:

Bob Dylan and Mick Jagger do not have the voice quality that Michael Buble has, but they are able to connect with an audience through what they say and the energy they generate in how they say it. Of course Taylor’s style and content isn’t going to appeal to everyone, but at this point in time she is appealing to more ticket and album buyers than anyone else. Hers is a career that has built steadily over a decade.

  14. Angelica says:

I can’t stand Taylor, BUT I’ll give her this: she didn’t actually deny the story. She’s just ruffling feathers just for the sake of feather ruffling.

  15. Green Girl says:

My goodness, to have $25 million that I can just drop on a house! Sorry, that’s all I got on this story.

  16. The Original G says:

Why would she keep her involvement in a real estate purchase on the down low?

DUH. If I knew Taylor’s identity, I would try to leverage up the selling price if I was the seller. It takes away her people’s ability to negotiate. Business 101.

  17. Halvin Carris says:

I think this house purchase kind of kills any rumors that her and her “beau” Calvin Harris are cohabitating.

  18. justagirl says:

@Kaiser Anyone who lies when there’s no reason to, or like this example, regularly makes unnecessary misleading statements, a random distraction/smoke & mirrors…is a habitual liar. Period.

Technically she didn’t really lie, but she did create a specific impression…which was misleading. Lying, or omitting truthful details, or creating a false impression is all the same…people who do that are not only very controlling about their image, they are purposely deceptive and manipulative. Surprise! No, not at all surprised about Swifty.

  19. Anon says:

Theory: Is it possible that her “people” are making purchases on her behalf as pure investments and her Dad is authorizing them and she doesn’t even really know? I know its somewhat outlandish, but I just cannot understand why anyone would call this out as a direct lie if its not? Like what a stupid thing to lie about?

What the press says I am doing:
Reading gossip sites when I should be doing the dishes.

    What I am actually doing:
Reading the gossip sites WHILE DRINKING COFFEE when I should be doing the dishes #hatersgonnabeboredaspoopstalkingme

  21. Anon says:

When dealing in real estate we all know to deny if a heft purchase and it’s still on the table. You don’t want someone outbidding right. It’s all to do about nothing and she is far from the last celeb to do it. She can say whatever she wants like everyone. You accept it get irritated by it trash talk it it’s life in tabloids lol

  22. Emily C. says:

She actually didn’t say “I did not buy these houses.” Instead, she implied she didn’t through sneaky weasely language. That’s the kind of advanced lying done by the most-practiced manipulators. She gives me the creeps, tbh.

  23. Mollie says:

Because her real estate dealings are none of our business…she’s got a zillion psycho stalker fans. Ick.

  24. Sunsetsnow says:

She hides it because she wants to remain relatable to her fan base and $25 million dollar mansions are unrelatable. Plus she can try and maintain some privacy from her fans. I would do the same thing.

  25. Louise177 says:

Nobody cares that Taylor bought a house. It’s just that she sounds ridiculous in denying it when it’s true. She didn’t have to say anything at all.

  26. Amy says:

Yeah, I guess “escapism can be smart”, if you make up total bullshit headlines and misinterpret a tweet. She never said she didn’t buy the house. She just said it’s not any of your business.

  27. Corey says:

Reading that older article reminds how impressive it is , how she has turned the press outlook of her in the past year. She went From ‘boy crazy creepy desperate girl’ to ‘queen of everything friends with everyone super all round success’.
