Carrie Underwood: ‘Women have to work harder to get half the recognition’

Cosmopolitan - Dec '15 - Carrie Underwood - Newsstand_edited-1
Carrie Underwood covers the December edition of Cosmopolitan. They put her in this really fug short sequin spaghetti strap dress with floral appliques. Plus the Photoshop on her face makes her look like a different person, especially around her mouth. I wish magazines would be less heavy handed with this.

Cosmo has only released a few quotes from the article but they’re decent. Carrie reveals that she has an on-stage persona, kind of. I wish she had a different name for her stage personality, like Country Fierce or something, but she acknowledges that she plays it up for effect and isn’t as much of a badass as she portrays in her songs. She also hints at issues in her marriage and says that women, especially in country music, “have to work harder to get half the recognition.

On Carrie having two sides:
“When I am onstage, I am not Carrie: I am Carrie Underwood. Obviously, I would never run off to Vegas and get drunk and marry a guy or trash some guy’s car. But everybody has had somebody who’s cheated on them or some jerk they dated.”

On her marriage:
“Everyone is getting divorced. They’re dropping like flies! But we are good. It helped that we were both established before we were married. Neither one of us could be like, ‘I didn’t know it would be like this!'”

On women in the country music genre:
“When I go to vote for the Country Music Awards, I have to write in names—I can think of, like, three who are really active. Women have to work harder to get half the recognition. I am one of the lucky ones.”

In terms of Carrie’s marriage, about two years ago there were rumors that she was having issues with her husband, Mike Fisher. At that point Carrie had said over and over again in interviews that she didn’t want kids, but then she ended up getting pregnant and she had a baby with Mike earlier this year. So I think that they may have disagreed about having kids for a while until Carrie changed her mind.

Carrie is co-hosting the CMAs with Brad Paisley tonight! This is their eighth year co-hosting together. I wonder in that Cosmo interview if Carrie is throwing a little shade on the CMAs for not nominating more women, if she’s saying that her industry doesn’t give women enough chances or both. It’s certainly true of so many industries and it’s a good thing the celebrities are speaking out. The CMAs air on ABC at 8. I guess I’ll have to wait until next week to see what happens on Nashville.

    Ya think?!

Anyway, every time I see Carrie I keep thinking it’s Reese Witherspoon (sans the chin).

  2. InvaderTak says:

Cynicism ahead: she won American idol, got a huge record deal after and instant hits because she had instant access to the best songwriters. Got inducted into the grand ol opry with like 2 albums of material. I can’t think of anyone else male or female in country music that got where she is that easy. Speaking in general yes, but she’s had huge advantages the whole way.

This shouldn’t shock anyone. We have to bust our butts a lot harder to be taken seriously. It sucks, but it could be worse, it could be 1950’s were you’re wearing your pearls and drinking at 9 am.

  4. JudyK says:

What’s she done to her face? She does not remotely resemble the plain-looking girl who won American Idol.

Not a fan, and I’m from Oklahoma.

Professional hair, makeup, wardrobe, and a little dash of photo shop. I don’t think she has done anything surgically.

i’m the same age as carrie and i TOTALLY get her on the children stuff!!! if you would have asked me if i wanted kids six months ago – i would have said emphatically in print that i didn’t know if i wanted them at all. but after a few years of marriage i feel happy and grounded and am starting to think that children would be a welcome addition to the great space we’ve carved out. of course things could change and kids make things 1 billion times harder but its so much easier to see a child as a positive thing now when it used to be framed as something to be avoided. also – i am starting to see how fun it would be for my parents to have a grandchild. i used to only think about how it would impact ME but now i see that my entire family gets the experience and i’m more open to providing it. long way to say i get how her opinion on motherhood changed seemingly on a dime.

Wow, the lower half of her face doesn’t look like her. Shame on the magazine for being so photoshop heavy handed. She is a beautiful girl who needs no help from photoshop. Her chin/mouth area is soooo different!

  7. lucy2 says:

I don’t think she ever said she didn’t want children, in all of those interviews she was just saying that the timing wasn’t right.
They both have busy careers and are young, I don’t know why people jump on newlyweds to have kids right away, or at all.

  8. Kelly says:

Love her! I like the dress on the cover. Her voice is my favorite when compared to all of today’s artists.
