Jessica Biel in custom Monse at Baby2Baby gala: tragic, terrible or lovely?

Just know, I wasn’t even going to bother with the fashion coverage from this weekend’s Baby2Baby gala event, but then I saw the photos of Jessica Biel. And I just HAD to say something. To be clear, this was a “gala,” so ball gowns and prom dresses were encouraged. In years past, this event – a charity gala which raises money to give diapers and baby stuff to low-income mothers – gets a decent turn-out and many women dress up in formal gowns. But Jessica Biel’s dress just seems really, really extra for the venue.

Biel’s gown was a custom-made Monse from their Spring 2016 collection. I think this would have been interesting A) on a different woman and B) at a different event. Like, imagine this on Cate Blanchett at an awards show. It would be “interesting,” right? But on Biel, with the lackluster styling, at a somewhat minor charity event, it just feels… wrong. Bad. Also: the necklace is much too heavy for the dress.

Reese Witherspoon in Giambattista Valli Spring 2015. Reese’s red carpet style has been really, really boring lately. What’s weird is that whenever she gets pap’d on the street, I almost always love her street style. But for big events, it’s like she’s just phoning it in.

Kerry Washington came out to this event and her dress was probably my favorite. She wore this Giambattista Valli gown which reminds me a lot of an Oscar de la Renta look. It suits her, it’s flattering, it’s princess-y and she looks lovely. One minor complaint: the lipstick is so weird that it makes Kerry look like she got lip injections.

Jessica Alba in Giambattista Valli – I feel like she has several different versions of “a sacky mustard-colored gown.” I could have sworn she’s worn this before, and I could have sworn that I’m hating it for the second time. Maybe I just loathe shades of mustard. It’s true.

Jenna Dewan in Monique Lhuillier. Like Biel’s gown, this one has a prom vibe, probably because of satin. I don’t hate the green, but the white heels are made of NO. Charming Potato looks nice though.

Jessica is trying to bring the snuggie into high fashion

    • SNAP says:

LOL right? It’s like she borrowed an over sized baby blanket and wrapped it around herself using the taco-swaddling-method…comfy for lounging at home on a cold day but not for a public event.

      • Tami says:

My mom said she looked like an old lady–in her defense she is sitting in a Snuggie right now.

      • antipodean says:

Tami, your mum has the right idea, this is Snuggie fashion at it’s best. The idea of the gown is interesting, but the tailoring is abysmal. Maybe on a more statuesque woman, and in a different colour it would look better.
Also, white shoes, on a man or woman, are ALWAYS just NO.

    • robynsing says:

      Jessica – Gay
Kerry Washington – looks exhausted by kids and work
Reese – luminous cuz her kids are grown
Jenna – propping up her drunken husband

    • Diva says:

She always looks tragic to me. Either her or her stylist just can’t pick good outfits

  2. Crocuta says:

Even Lupita could not make this dress work.

  3. phlyfiremama says:

Jessica B.s dress looks great, but it should be on an Oscar carpet NOT a baby event~Same with Kerry’s.I think Jessica A looks very pretty~even if the mustard tones aren’t for me, they still look lovely. The others are otherwise a whole lot of yawn.

  4. GeekLuva says:

I’m sorry. JB looks like the folds of some very swollen labia.

  5. Deedee says:

Perhaps she donated the baby blanket around her shoulders after the event?

  6. Dawn says:

I think Jessica can wear just about any thing and make it look good. The color is beautiful on her but the top of the dress is weird. I think everyone in the pictures look great.

    • The Beldam says:

I agree. Everyone here looks lovely. I’m not a JB fan, but I think she looks really pretty here. She ought to wear that shade of pink more often. It really brings out her skin tones. I think the dress is completely acceptable for a ‘gala charity event’. You’re there to glam it up, and it’s for a good cause. Have fun with it.

  7. Mimz says:

Am I weird for not hating it? I think it’s a nice dress, and even though the necklace is a tad too heavy it works. In my opinion.

    Everyone else is looking OK…

  8. Allie says:

I love mustard yellow! I wish I could pull it off but I’m a redhead and it would clash. If I had Jessica Alba’s coloring, I’d wear that color every day. She looks gorgeous!

On another note, am I the only one that finds it a tad smug that events that are for charity are usually balls that require gowns, etc. Like you’re raising money for low income women, so let’s dress up in thousand dollar gowns and further distance ourselves from reality.

    • Josephine says:

I liked Jessica Alba’s dress as well, and it seemed the best suited for an event. She and Reese looked appropriate; Biel looked like she was dressed for a different event (bedtime?). I guess they throw balls because they can get more money for a fancy event?

      • Nancy says:

I think yellow looks best on a darker skin which Alba has. She seems like nothing more than fashion hanger to me. She peaked out at Dark Angel. Reese looked cut off and squatty. She is very short and needs a one piece no frilly dress. Other than that they’re all beautiful!!! lol

    • Zip says:

Some days ago when I was on my way to work I saw a woman on the train completely dressed in mustard yellow. Jacket, pants, socks, shoes – all the same shade of mustard yellow. Only her shirt was red or something. She was blonde and looked truly horrible.

    • Bridget says:

Mustard yellow can be really fantastic if the wearer pulls it off, but it’s hard and not many women do.

    • Moneypenny says:

In other pictures of Jessica Alba from the event, you can see her thong through that middle panel in the dress. Yikes.

  9. astrid says:

It sort of looks like most of the women forgot to comb their hair before the event

  10. Size Does Matter says:

Jenna Dewan looks as if she’s in her way to prom. In Southeastern Oklahoma. In 1988.

    • taxi says:

She was laughably awful in the 1 thing I ever saw her in but she tries to throw weight around the show biz world. If she weren’t married to Tatum, nobody would give her a 2nd look, unkess she were in porn.

  11. T.Fanty says:

Charming Potato looks rough. Even Ben Affleck just looked at him and said “get it together, dude.”

  12. Nancy says:

I’m totally convinced someone double dogged dared here to wear that horrible dress. She pays as much attention to choosing a gown as to vaccinating her kid. I wonder how Justin feels about the latter. I have never heard his views.

  13. JenniferJustice says:

Jenna Dewan’s dress is by far the best…at least of those pictured above. Alba comes in second.

  14. QQ says:

I’m not sure that dress wasn’t made from the inside of Dumbo’s ears, folded just artfully so by the people that fold towels in the cruise ships

  15. Ankhel says:

How brilliant of Jessica Biel to wear a diaper to an event sponsoring baby products for low-income mothers! Brava!

  16. Azurea says:

Except for Jessica’s gown, and possibly Jenna’s, they all look like homemade fails to me!
It seems that nowadays “designer” = thrown-together crap.

  17. Shasta says:

I die of boredom every time I look at her. She’s the epitome of bland.

  18. cujokay says:

Jessica Biel’s dress is ugly as are most of her clothes. She always looks less than put together.

The only dress I like is Jessica Alba’s but I’m not crazy about the color but I don’t hate it. I would love it in red, tangerine or black.

  19. Wentworth Miller says:

Who is this woman’s stylist? Jessica never looks pulled together.

  20. Abbess Tansy says:

I don’t think even a Barbie doll or a Disney princess would wear Jessica’s dress.

  21. serena says:

Sorry but Biel’s gown would have looked terrible on Cate Blanchett, she too pale and that would have washed her out.

  22. dana says:

Love ya Jessica, but this is no good. Forget the butterfly bow wings, the color against your skin in pictures washes you out. The middle of the bow hanging low in the center felt like it could fall down… you didn’t carry it well with your posture and pose. UGH this was a big NO.

  23. Tiffany says:

Not only is her dress but also her face. Geeez Jessica.

  24. casey says:

Sounds like a worthy charity and I hope they raised a lot. Wonder if the celebs buy tickets to the event or just write cheques…

  25. Twinkle says:

    1) She has terrible taste; that’s what stylist are for; 2) She has no style; that’s why clothes look so awful on her.

  26. Anare says:

I’m going to go with “tragic”. All these looks are fug except Kerry Washington. P

  27. Cynthia Angel says:

Jessica always looks in the need of a stylist. She always looks weird never looks well dressed. Never! In comparaison Selena Gomez always looks great!
