Tom Brady’s GQ Man of the Year profile is a study in surly deflection

brady1

I went into Tom Brady’s GQ Man of the Year cover profile thinking it was going to be just another piece of BS frat-bro hagiography. Some people are ride-or-die for Brady, I get that. And if the Patriots are your team, God bless. But over the past year, I’ve become convinced that Brady is a liar, a cheater, and that he is not very bright at all. There’s something deceptive about him, something very shady. And what’s incredible is that GQ’s Chuck Klosterman basically says yes, Brady is a great QB, perhaps one of the greatest of all time, but that he’s a shady bastard too.

When celebrities/athletes agree to these kinds of profiles – especially a MOTY profile – they’re expected to do a no-holds-barred sit-down interview. That’s what Klosterman was promised. Instead, Brady’s people said at the last minute that it would have to be an hour-long phone interview. Then when Brady called, he only had 45 minutes. Then when Klosterman got to the Deflategate stuff, Brady hedged, deflected, lied and cut off the conversation. He even flat-out denied knowledge that he was going to be ASKED about Deflategate. Because he’s so classy and honest, right? Such a professional. You can read the full GQ piece here, which I would suggest because I love how Klosterman really pressed him to answer some very basic questions and Brady just… couldn’t. Or wouldn’t. Some highlights:

Brady doesn’t want to be a politician: “There is 0.000 chance of me ever wanting to do that. I just think that no matter what you’d say or what you’d do, you’d be in a position where you know, you’re politicking. You know? Like, I think the great part about what I do is that there’s a scoreboard. At the end of every week, you know how you did. You know how well you prepared. You know whether you executed your game plan. There’s a tangible score. I think in politics, half the people are gonna like you and half the people are not gonna like you, no matter what you do or what you say… It’s like there are no right answers. If there were, everyone would choose the right answers. They’re all opinions.”

Whether he was “generally aware” that balls were being deflated: “I don’t really wanna talk about stuff like this. There are several reasons why. One is that it’s still ongoing. So I really don’t have much to say, because it’s—there’s still an appeal going on.”

When pressed about the issue: “I’ve had those questions for eight months and I’ve answered them, you know, multiple times for many different people, so—

Again, was he generally aware? “I’m not talking about that, because there’s still ongoing litigation. It has nothing to do with the personal question that you’re trying to ask, or the answer you’re trying to get. I’m not talking about anything as it relates to what’s happened over the last eight months. I’ve dealt with those questions for eight months. It’s something that—obviously I wish that we were talking about something different. But like I said, it’s still going on right now. And there’s nothing more that I really want to add to the subject. It’s been debated and talked about, especially in Boston, for a long time.

Whether he thinks Deflategate changed the way the Patriots are perceived: “I don’t really care how the Patriots are perceived, truthfully. I really don’t. I really don’t. Look, if you’re a fan of our team, you root for us, you believe in our team, and you believe in what we’re trying to accomplish. If you’re not a fan of us, you have a different opinion.”

When pressed again about his “general awareness” of deflated balls: “I’ve already answered all those questions. I don’t want to keep revisiting what’s happened over the last eight months. Whether it’s you, whether it’s my parents, whether it’s anybody else. If that’s what you want to talk about, then it’s going to be a very short interview.

[From GQ]

Soon after that last response, the interview comes to a close. If you read the full piece, you get the whole experience of Klosterman really pressing Brady on that single question: did Brady have “general awareness” of footballs being deflated? And if Brady had answered that question publicly (or in court) before as he claimed, why would it have been so difficult to say “I addressed it there, but I’ll say it again. No, I did not have general awareness”? It’s a fascinating glimpse of how ill-prepared Brady was for a telephone interview by a less-than-fan-girly journalist.

Notice Brady did have the time to do a full-on GQ photoshoot with Inez & Vinoodh though.

Well said Kaiser. His wife is tres shady and deceptive too.

    • Chris87Ff says:

And the photos of Brady are so lame. He looks like an idiot. I will add I don’t think he instructed ppl to deflate. There is a range and he could’ve asked for balls to be on the lower end. It’s so not a big deal. Regardless, Tom said after football he wants to act…in movies. Now that’s funny. He has zero personality.

  2. Pedro45 says:

Which part of “ongoing litigation” does Klosterman not understand?

    • Bridget says:

Then don’t do the interview in the first place. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know this topic was going to be a part of the discussion.

      • Pedro45 says:

Or maybe the professional writer could come up with a new angle for his interview?

      • Bridget says:

Yeah, why on earth would the professional writer want to discuss the biggest story about Tom Brady?

      • Ali says:

Agreed! He said he wouldn’t discuss it. It’s an ongoing investigation. So because he CAN’T talk about it, he is automatically guilty. It’s absurd.

    • Kitten says:

I’m with you, Pedro45. How about them Pats huh?
      Brady is GOAT for sure.

      • doofus says:

Kitten, I was SO hoping that my Giants would beat them…

but then I realized, in the Pats last (almost) undefeated season, the Giants were the team that came closest to beating them in the regular season and then we all know what happened.

        may history repeat itself! 😉

      • V4Real says:

        @doofus

What was that on Sunday? Big Blue had that in the bag but the Pats said hold up, wait a minute, not so fast.

      • doofus says:

        so disappointing.

NEVER underestimate what Brady can do in the fourth quarter with only a minute left is all I can say…

      • Lilacflowers says:

And never underestimate the power of Gostkowski’s foot. Has George RR Martin recovered yet or is he still on the floor screaming HODOR!!!

      • mimif says:

        CROQUEMBOUCHE!

      • doofus says:

(I was waiting for that, mimif!)

      • LeAnn Stinks says:

        Doofus,

They only lost by one measly point. In my opinion, the Giants beat themselves, rather than the Pats beating them.

However, Gostkowski is one of the best, if not the best, kicker in the league.

        GO G-MEN

      • mimif says:

@doofus, it’s all I can say at this point, especially in regards to football. Sigh. At least Bridget and I still have Beast Mode!

      • MND says:

        Nah. Leo has him covered.

    • Heather says:

God, thank you. I don’t understand how the general public (and that reporter) doesn’t get that you can’t talk about things that are the subject of ongoing litigation without getting yourself in trouble! And how many times does he have to say the same thing?

The facts have clearly came out in the aftermath of this non-scandal- the Pats footballs were not deflated in the first place and the NFL lied about it. There was one ball which might have been slightly under but that could be the result of weather and play. And none of the Colts balls were tested to see if any of theirs were slightly under the allowable psi. It was a scam, a set up, and for the bright writing that occurs on here I am surprised people aren’t bright enough to get it.

      • Lilacflowers says:

As Judge Berman pointed out, the Patriots ball that was underinflated was in the possession of the Colts equipment manager, unwatchable, for a full five minutes before he turned it over to the officials.

      • frank drebin says:

and that guy was called the deflator cause he was trying to lose weight. like really

  3. Ruyana says:

Tom Brady lost ALL of his hot somewhere along the way. His eyes are actually kind of zombie eyes.

  4. Bridget says:

If one of the biggest parts of your interview is a discussion of ongoing litigation, maybe this wasn’t the right choice for “Man Of The Year”. Just saying.

    • tracking says:

      +1000

    • Lilacflowers says:

Or ask the question once, get the standard pending litigation response you knew was coming, and move on to other topics instead of asking the same question, which was covered in the arbitration hearing, four times.

      • Kitten says:

Exactly! Ugh. Brady isn’t the one directing the interview. In fact, I’m pretty damn sure that “deflategate” is the last thing he wants to talk about.

      • Bridget says:

It’s fine if he doesn’t want to talk about it. But don’t accept an honor that’s supposed to come with an in – depth interview and then get pissy when the writer wants to discuss the biggest news story about you.

      • Pedro45 says:

        Bridget,

It’s GQ, not the Nobel Peace Prize. It’s really not such a big deal.

    • Saphana says:

good point, he is no man of the year material.

    • LeAnn Stinks says:

      Great point!

    • MND says:

Spot on, Bridget. The only ones who don’t get it are the one eyed Patriot supporters.

  5. Lilacflowers says:

As an attorney, I routinely tell clients not to discuss on-going litigation with the media. An appeals court could remand the whole mess back to arbitration for a new hearing. and Klosterman would have encountered that response from others in the past. That Klosterman kept asking the same question repeatedly and the editor decided to put it in the finished product more than once speaks more to Klosterman having an agenda than anything else. Didn’t he have any other questions to ask? Or was Klosterman unprepared to discuss anything else?

    • V4Real says:

Well it would have been interesting if he asked him about the nanny wearing his SB rings but then I guess we wouldn’t be seeing Brady on this cover.

It’s clear I’m not a Patriot fan but I like Brady as a QB. I think he’s awesome. But why does it seems as if I’m the only one on here who still finds him attractive?

      • Lilacflowers says:

You aren’t the only one. His looks don’t excite me but I do think he’s a good looking guy

    • Kitten says:

      +1,000,000

      Dude is a hack.

    • Bridget says:

Tom Brady’s image took a huge hit this year, and I’m assuming that this was supposed to be an opportunity to start repairing that. I get not wanting to talk about the legal case, but at least get together with your people and prepare something appropriate ahead of time. In my opinion, Klosterman could have gone for more offensive in his line of questioning but didnt.

      • Pedro45 says:

It’s not about not wanting to talk about it; he literally can’t talk about it and Klosterman knew it. He could have gone a different way than asking about pending litigation.

In other words, do your job, Chuck.

      • Bridget says:

There’s no way they didn’t know ahead of time that Klosterman was going to ask about deflategate. I’m guessing Tom was supposed to give more of an answer (without getting into specifics) and that he got pissy. Because again, I’m point out the fact that Tom is clearly trying to repair his image. The Golden Boy is tarnished, and he didn’t exactly help dig himself out of the hole. Tom Brady isn’t just an individual sports player, he’s a brand and the face of his team.

Or in other words, do your job Brady.

      • mimif says:

This can only be solved by watching one thing:

  6. Abbott says:

    He looks like a foot.

  7. swack says:

He is never going to admit that he knew anything about the deflated footballs and I think people are just beating a dead horse at this point. With all his hee-hawing about it, it tends to make one believe that he totally knew about it. But God forbid his image gets tarnished and he is seen as human by admitting to it. BTW, he may be the greatest now, but there is always the possibility that someone else will come along and be better than he is/was.

    • Lilacflowers says:

As Judge Berman pointed out in his decision, whether he knew or not was irrelevant because the NFL rules contain no language about “knowing” or “general awareness” and there was no duty to report. The only punishable offense would be if he ordered the balls deflated, which the NFL admitted it could not prove. Indeed, the NFL admitted it couldn’t prove the balls were actually deflated by anyone and, as Judge Berman pointed out, the person who had the ball the longest was the Colts equipment manager.

      • swack says:

I get that, but I was not talking what it would or would not do for the case against him. I just think if he admits to it, it makes him look more human and that’s not the image he seems to want.

  8. nora says:

He is so unattractive. And his own self-admittance to being a needy brat doesn’t help.

  9. teatimeiscoming says:

    Interviewer totally had an agenda.

  11. boredblond says:

What’s with all the Mr and Mrs (usually silent) Brady’s both doing a lot of talking now? are they planning some reality show or something? or just cleanup on the ‘trouble in paradise’ stories?

  12. Fluffernutter says:

HE HAS THE MOST PUNCHABLE FACE.

  13. Lara K says:

That photo on the couch is unbelievable! Like a SNL sketch or something.

Whatever sexy thoughts I may have ever had of him have now left the building. I feel exorcised.

  14. INeedANap says:

I wonder if GQ would press this hard on NFL players accused of domestic violence.

  15. Michelle says:

He can be the most successful QB ever to play the game, he can have all the records, all the rings, the hot wife, the beautiful children, etc. but he will never get away from deflategate and he will never hold a candle to Peyton Manning in my eyes. I’m not a Broncos fan, I am a Peyton Manning fan. He is dedicated to the game, he’s respectful of his coach and his teammates, he keeps his personal life private, and he doesn’t do anything to put himself in a controversial position. GQ needed to rethink this Man of the Year bullshit.

    • AJ says:

I don’t think that’s entirely true about PM. He has, on numerous occasions, called out and threw his teammates under the bus (the whole “liquored up, idiot kicker” tirade). He is so stat driven, even to the detriment of the team, like last Sunday.
Okay full disclosure, I am a die hard Pats fan and have been all my life. But, I follow sports and have seen numerous post game interviews of him bi***ing about his Oline or play calling. How many rule changes were made for him? Especially after Ty Law schooling him in the ’03 playoffs.

      • Carol says:

Tom just gets his wife or dad to do the complaining for him.

I used to dislike Peyton tremendously, but then I started hearing the other players talk about him and how he writes letters to compliment them on good games. He also writes letters to retiring players to congratulate them on their careers. Peyton never mentioned it; they came onl and outed him and some choked up while reading these very meaningful letters.

I also noticed that Peyton tends to answer questions like a coach. If the line was bad, he says they were bad, but I don’t ever remember him not sharing responsibility for a loss. He certainly doesn’t take credit for the wins.

        Yeah, he won me over.

    • lobbit says:

I think Peyton Manning has got that all-American, “aw shucks” facade nailed. But every once in a while he lets the mask slip and you realize that he’s probably just as much of a jerk as any other pro athlete. Like that time he slagged off a low level employee (scoreboard operator) during his post game press conference. Way to step on the little guy, Peyton.

    • LeAnn Stinks says:

I question the “hot wife” comment. 😉

    • Anne tommy says:

All that padding and face guards and body armour in American football…it’s just rugby for wimps.

  16. Lbliss says:

I have no respect for him as a football player after deflategate. Lame choice of Man of the Year GQ!! Looks like the press you bought to fix your broken image backfired on you frankenstein potatoe head.

  17. Elle says:

Ok But those sweatpants..With that blazer…and even that coat…Just no. I swear whoever styled him secretly despises him..

  18. Roller74 says:

A lot of people believe that just because someone has natural god given talent and uses that talent to excel in sports, like T.Brady, that they must be almost super human including being really smart. So many of these athletes barely graduated high school and a large portion didn’t go on to college or University. If they did, you’ll find a lot of their course loads were easy peasy because they are not in it for the academics, they are in it for the the sport and their coaches know this. You ever hear a sound clip from some of these guys, ya……. not the sharpest knife in the drawer. And when you give power and loads of money to people with not a lot of common sense, you end up with them being GQ man of the year.

  19. Jess says:

Ugh. I use to like him and the Pats (I’m from New England in part) but the cheating and his general ego and attitude have completely turned me off. He shouldn’t have received this honor in the first place but I do love that the article pressed him on his shadiness. As for the ongoing litigation angle – if he’s answered before then he should repeat that answer. If he hasn’t answered because of the litigation, then he should say that. Instead, he’s trying to have it both ways, implying that he’s given a clear answer in the past while avoiding all responsibility now. So no, you can’t blame this on the reporter or the litigation. He’s shady.

  20. Jim Flaherty says:

    Haters gonna hate……
So jealous of the man. Greatest ever.
    Go TB 12!!!

  21. Penelope says:

Tom Brady is neither a liar nor a cheater and he is, in fact, very bright. Brady is the GOAT, plain and simple. Deal with it.

  22. Ali says:

The guy knew deflate gate was off limits and he just looks like an idiot for pressing the issue. Brady CAN’T talk about it because it’s an ongoing investigation and I’m sure if he did, this idiot writer would skew whatever he says to make Brady look guilty.

  23. KittyKat says:

“Whether it’s my parents…”! Holy heck, what does that mean? Are his parents questioning him?

  24. MND says:

If we’re talking famous people Jeremy Corbyn is my man of the year.

  25. Tate says:

    The couch picture is hilarious!!

  26. Dara says:

The whole point of having a feature like this is to give the writer extensive access so they can delve deeper into their subject and hopefully offer some insight. Brady and his team blew it by essentially pulling a no-show, with more time and more access Klosterman would have had more material for a better “what makes Brady tick” story and he could have moved past the controversy. Of course he is going to ask about deflate-gate, it was one of the defining moments of Brady’s year – you know, the one for which the magazine is crowning him Man of the Year. If he hadn’t asked it about during what little time he had – or didn’t press the issue, we’d all be slamming him for doing a puff-piece or taking it too easy on the subject.

If I were the editor and the subject of my cover story didn’t deliver on their part of the deal, I would have pulled their cover, but I’m sure GQ had probably already splashed out a crapload of money on a photoshoot so they may have had no choice but to publish something.

  27. Yana says:

I’ll probably read this article just because I love Chuck Klosterman. He’s a great writer and I reread ‘Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs’ at least once a year.

  28. Lemon says:

    #haterzgonnahate #GoPats

  29. MND says:

Gisele Bundchen and Tom Butt Chin.

  30. Audrey says:

The writer threatened to make his refusal the centre of the piece if Brady wouldn’t talk about deflategate and he went ahead and did that. Despite the fact that there’s no way Brady’s lawyers would okay it

I was disappointed. The writer did a 45 minute interview and this was all he could come up with. 38/45 minutes were spent on other things and he barely used that material

It’s really just a tantrum in the form of an article. I expected more from him, he has a good reputation.

  31. Sarah01 says:

Anyone who supports trump is a certified bleep head, he is one of them.

  32. Tracey says:

    Keep it up Haters
    1. It is ONGOING litigation so he can’t comment
    2. All the guy asked about was deflategate stuff
3.Oh okay the wells report proves what? And even if you think it did prove something guess what – how do you go from generally aware to a freakin conspiracy in RGs arbitration decision?
    4. A federal Judge basically laughed at the NFL…just because you have the power doesn’t mean you don’t need some evidence
    5. Let’s look at other similar issues and they were dealt with as mine infractions but this is up there with PED use? You’re all NUTS! If you fall for this obvious campaign to make the Patriots look bad
    6. Did you all know we are 9-0? Ha!
