Angelina Jolie on working with 250 kids in Cambodia: “It’s my ‘I love babies’ fix”

Many years ago and just months after Angelina Jolie gave birth to Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, Angelina controversially referred to Shiloh as a “blob.” Some celebrity women had said similar things – that newborn babies really aren’t all that interesting – but because it was Angelina and because she actually used the word “blob,” people freaked out. People were like “OMG she hates babies, specifically babies that are not adopted!” It became a thing. There were actually questions about whether Angelina loved all of her children. Seriously. Well, now that all six of her kids are growing up and she’ll soon have SO MANY teenagers in the house, Angelina sort of misses the blob-stage of having kids.

Since her children aren’t babies anymore, Angelina Jolie Pitt has to get her “baby fix” somewhere else: on set. Jolie Pitt, 41, is currently in Cambodia where she’s filming her next movie First They Killed My Father, which has scenes that require hundreds of children.

“I’m surrounded by toys,” Jolie Pitt told PEOPLE from her production office in Southeast Asian country. “We have 250 children in a scene, so I filled the house, my car, my trailer with toys. It’s my ‘I love babies’ fix.”

First They Killed My Father is about the Khmer Rouge genocide. She says she’s worried “this is going to be the hardest movie” on her maternal side. “They have to go through a labor camp. They have to cry and scream. My instinct is to want to cut and hug everyone.”

The actress-director has six children with her husband Brad Pitt — Maddox, 14, Pax, 12, Zahara, 10, Shiloh, 9, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 7 — and they’re all growing up rather quickly. Pax, the second oldest, has even started working on her sets, she says.

You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone! Blob today, gone tomorrow. I think it’s interesting that Angelina even needs a “baby fix” – does that make you like her more? Some women are truly like that, they need a baby fix, they need to hold babies and they need to be around babies. I never thought Angelina was like that, but I guess she probably does miss having babies or really young kids around.

Now this sounds like a movie I want to see.

I noticed that I have never been one to gush over babies. Now a puppy or kitten, I’m hooked. But I do love the smell of babies and puppy breath.

    • Maya says:

I am opposite – I love babies and their smell but animals I avoid.

Even though I love animals I tend not to go near them as much.

    • MrsBPitt says:

I love, love, love, babies!!! Any kind of babies!!!! Human babies, puppies, kittens, baby elephants, baby lion cubs, etc. I will draw the line at baby bugs….not a bug person! lol

    • Amanduh says:

I ADORE puppy breath!! And my cat’s (terrible) breath…it’s ridiculously cute.

    • Tulip Garden says:

      V,
Puppies and kittens for me too! I mean holding a baby once in a blue moon is sweet but not so much long term. Puppies and kittens at 250 heaven, babies at 250 equals headache😬

    • Birdix says:

I love babies too, but they are blobs a fair amount of the time–they can be fairly amused staring at a wall. We have a puppy and wow is he cute, but (after just taking away a mysterious object he just pulled out from under the stove, hopefully not something essential to its function) sometimes I wish he could be a little more blob-like. He’s SO busy. And doesn’t have all his shots yet so can’t go out and run it off for 3 more weeks.
I will say that even the manic puppy is preferable to the ghastly emotional scene from the now middle-schooler any day of the week.

    • Ughhh….I LOVE holding babies. Well, older ones that can sit up…..but I just love holding them, kissing them……..I had my eight month old niece for a month, and she was SO spoiled by the time she went back to my sister, because I held her so much.

  2. Maya says:

This is so cute – I am like her, I always want to be surrounded by babies.

And of course anything Angelina says will be twisted to use against her. Some people and media are still disgustingly calling Shiloh a boy because she has short hair and is tomboyish.

Brad & Angelina only once told a cute story about how Shiloh (who was 3 at that time) loved Peter Pan and wanted to be called John. People turned that into an attack and labelled Shiloh a transgender.

Will never understand how people can sink so low that they attack children just because they don’t like the parents.

PS: cannot wait for First they killed my father – it was a wonderful book.

  3. Anon says:

This 100% feels like a “Look over here, I love babies!” distraction from BTS’s mess. Whatever, I’ll bite, I do think it makes her more likable to me.

    • Paige says:

She was talking about the children on the set of her new project, “First They Killed My Father”.

    • Colette says:

The interview was done before BTS was released,Boo.As evident by the other questions in the magazine interview.People.com will drag it out by releasing a question a day.

  4. snusnu says:

Omfg this makes me like her even more.

I love babies too by the way.SO MUCH.
Like,I smell their cheeks and gently caress them and sometimes when Im daydreaming I think about holding babies and giving them tiny hugs.Ohh time to watch youtube videos of toddlers and puppies!

I’ve been to the Killing Fields and S-21. Both were brutal. They aren’t really cleaned up for the public like the death camps in Europe, for example. There are still blood stains everywhere in S-21. Actually bits of bone and cloth on the ground from the graves, and a collection of human skulls in front of the Fields. My point is: this movie will be a difficult one to watch.

I hope the filming isn’t hard on the children. I’m not sure about the ethics of using child actors in traumatic contexts. Cambodian people still seem to be collectively traumatized.

  6. Alexa says:

OMG – I don’t think I ever saw a pic of Vivienne at that age. SO SO CUTE!!

  7. tealily says:

I’d be more into 250 puppies, but I dig it.

Omg 250 puppies… can you imagine?

  8. minx says:

That picture of baby Vivienne–I want to eat her cheeks.

  9. Colette says:

The interviewer with Marie Claire initially used the word “blob” Angie simply repeated it.Angie had never being around a newborn baby.Zahara and Maddox weren’t newborns when she adopted them .There is a big difference between a six month old baby and a six hour or six day old baby.

  10. Bread and Circuses says:

I don’t need a baby fix, but I enjoy the heck out of getting one. In fact, when my cousin came to visit with his three-year-old, I wound up surprisingly disappointed afterward because she was SO cute, but she was also sick at the time. I totally wanted to play with her, but she just wasn’t feeling well enough to put up with a stranger trying to be friendly.

  11. Nymeria says:

I don’t buy this for a second. More PR spin.
