Angelina Jolie covers Elle France to promote box office bomb ‘By the Sea’

jolie elle

Here is the new cover for Elle France, with Angelina Jolie looking rather lovely. She covers the issue to promote her Euro-centric vanity project, By the Sea. BTS has made a little more than $1.5 million domestically and internationally combined. For a film that reportedly cost $10-25 million to make and promote, it really does not seem like the studio will be making any money off of BTS. Sad. Well, at least the studio won’t be able to say that Angelina refused to promote it. She has been promoting it, exhaustively. Probably to the detriment of Brad Pitt’s actual Oscar-bait film, The Big Short.

Speaking of The Big Short, THR asked Brad Pitt if he was interested in following in Angelina’s footsteps and trying his hand at directing. Brad answered quickly: “No, not at all. I have no desire whatsoever. I like my corner of the field.” I bet Brad would actually have a pretty good eye as a director. I dare say he would have a better feel for good scripts too, judging by how he operates as a producer.

Meanwhile, this week’s National Enquirer is all about how Brad and Angelina are about to go through a “$480 million divorce.” Sources claim that Brad caught Angelina carrying on with “an unidentified crew member” while at work in Cambodia. Brad ran away and cried, and one of his friends tells the mag: “To Brad, it’s emotional cheating. He got word from sources on the set and he exploded! The close nature of Angelina’s relationship with the man quickly became the talk of cast and crew, who note how she hangs on his every word… Angelina looks positively enamored with this man!” Gossip Cop says the story is “made up.” Which… sure. Where is Brad, by the way? I know Angelina is in Cambodia, working on another film that absolutely no one will see. But where’s Brad?

I think Brad is with her in Cambodia now…

    • V4Real says:

Yes, he was dressed as the crew member they are referring to. What a load of crap.

      • doofus says:

        lol. good one.

I think Pitt would be a decent director, but who knows? maybe he saw how hard it was when his wife was doing it and decided he wanted no part of that job. I’m sure he’s seen other directors have a hard time of it but he surely got a much more intimate look at what the job entails when his partner was directing him.

Jolie does look very lovely here…I think this is the hair color that works best for her.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

        @doofus
IDK, why they’re even still asking him….he’s said for years (especially on Charlie Rose) that he wouldn’t ever direct because he’d be too anal about it. I’m pretty sure CB has done a story on it before.

I love her brown hair too. I think she looks best with it–not as a blond or even with black hair.

      • doofus says:

VC, didn’t know that. I still think he might be decent, though…even if HE doesn’t think so. He seems so easy going and laid back, it’s funny that he says he’d be anal about his directing.

      • perplexed says:

Brad Pitt seems to have a more laid-back personality and appears to be considered nice. I wonder if those qualities work with being a director, most of whom are jerks (no, I’m not saying Angelina is a jerk — I’m saying the other male ones are!). Even though he may be anal and meticulous, I can’t actually picture him personality-wise trying to make an actress cry so that he can bring his anal vision to fruition.

  2. GlimmerBunny says:

She looks gorgeous. I love her smile and hair.

    • AntiSocialButterfly says:

Yes. Even though any possible crinkle is botoxed away, she has such a relaxed and peaceful facial expression. It’s really nice to see.

    • Pandy says:

Honestly – gorgeous. She looks mature in this photo – if this is a precursor, I’m going to have to hate her for not aging like the rest of us! She’s so freaking photogenic.

  3. vauvert says:

    She does look lovely here.
Did Brad drive away on a motorcycle, tears coursing down his face, or did he just blindly run into the jungle, machete in hand, chopping at the branches blocking his course? (Ends sarcastic rant)
The tabloids stopped with the divorce crap for a bit but apparently the break is over… Wasn’t Pitt promoting with Ryan just last week?

Not sure why you assume no one will watch the Cambodia movie? It doesn’t sound to me like she is attempting a blockbuster, but rather another movie about a topic that matters to her. Not all directors want to make “big” movies all the time. I hope it turns out commercially succesful just because otherwise studios will use it as a “see, women cannot make popular movies”. For herself, she will be fine regardless, and I am sure the two of them as a couple are fine too.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Yea, I didn’t get the “to the detriment of Brad’s movie”…..Brad has basically an extended cameo in the movie, and only took a role to get the film made. He’s mainly a producer vs. acting. He went to the premiere. I think there’s been some type of Q&A thing that he didn’t go to, but am not sure.

I don’t get the people who complain that he’s everywhere, overshadowing the film…..but then when he steps back, he’s accused of not promoting the film.

Just like with “Selma”….he wasn’t even a full producer on the film (it was Jeremy Kleiner and Dede Gardner and Christian Colson that were credited as producers), he was an EP, probably because it was Plan B……yet he was accused by people on here that he was pushing Angelina’s movie (“Unbroken”–and I guess this was because he went to the premiere while she had chicken pox?), instead of an “important film”…….

  4. xboxsucks says:

Brad is in cambodja with her, the went to a concert a couple daya ago(there are pictures on facebook)

  5. JFresh says:

I will see it. Don’t care how bad the reviews are. She is in a class by herself as a Hollywood celebrity, and her work is worth supporting.

    • Tiffany says:

I will as well. Could not see it in theatres as it was not in my area. I think DVD sales will help recoup some of the budget.

      • misande says:

LOL the DVD sales won’t help at all. This movie is a flop and very few people are interested in them. If it didn’t do well under limited release, then it won’t do well on the DVD sales either.

    • Tapioca says:

“Hollywood CELEBRITY”, eh? Your subtle shade game is on point!

      • JFresh says:

Not intended. I guess I should have said artist or entertainer. What I mean really is that she’s gone beyond simply being an actress or director. She’s an icon and has earned my admiration.

  6. Dangles says:

She looks nice on that magazine cover. She and Brad seem like a cute couple.

  7. Leah says:

    She looks beautiful!

  8. Jodica says:

I will love By The Sea, whenever I get a chance to see it. I have love for all things Angie :), with no apologies either.

  9. Naddie says:

I think Brad would be a very good director.

    • Jayna says:

Why? Producing and acting is way different than directing and writing a movie. Is every actor capable of directing? Hell, no. And really just a small number have actually been great at it when trying. Is every producer capable of acting and/or directing? No.

It actually is an insult to directors who are passionate about their craft and have worked very hard to hone their skill to think actors can necessarily direct. Can every director act? No, of course not.

Brad seems to know his limits and his interests and passions in the film industry. Liam Neeson was asked the same thing, and he said he would never direct. He loves his craft of acting and respects and loves working with great directors. He is producing a film he’s passionate about that might not get made without his involvement.

  10. Catelina says:

Also, while I’m not sure whether Brad really would make a good director or not-maybe he would!- I appreciate that he’s self aware enough to not just assume he’d be great at it, and is instead choosing to stick with supporting other directors he believes in. I don’t think many producers would’ve put faith and thrown their weight behind an Adam McKay dramatic movie the way he did. But the film is still in the 90’s on rottentomatoes so it seems to be paying off.

  11. Val says:

She looks really pretty on the cover! I do question the stylist though – I feel like the outfit doesn’t look that great… I’m thinking wide-legged trousers that cover her shoes and a tight short-sleeved top.

    • Esmom says:

I love the slim pants on her, she really rocks them. I like that shot with the chair better than the close up one because the close up looks a little too airbrushed to me. It’s like the art directors can’t help themselves with the unnecessary retouching.

    • Carmen says:

That’s a really great cover photo. It’s nice to see she’s embracing her real age and she’s not trying to looker dress like a twenty year old ingenue. She’s going to be absolutely stunning when she reaches her fifties.

  12. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Ah and she’s on Elle, probably because it’s opening today (or on the 8th?)……in France.

  13. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Everytime I hear of this movie I think about how in the end the commercials never really explained what the hell it was about. Yeah, I don’t want spoilers and trailers often give too much away but this one reminds me of George Clooney’s trailer (and bomb) for Tomorrowland where there’s a lot of images but no coherent plot offered to an audience. I just don’t see the majority of people spending their money (movies) are expensive these days) to go see a film that even the trailer can’t explain what it’s about.

    • kate says:

The film itself doesn’t really explain what it’s about until right at the end, and after all the build up it’s laughable (as in people in the theatre actually laughed).

  14. Chaucer says:

Tread carefully, Kaiser! The loonies are going to start coming for you! 😉

    • SusanneToo says:

I actually only see two or three real loonies on the Angie threads. Most posters who like her(like me) are pretty sensible. The loonies are rather persistant which makes it seem like there’s a lot of them though.

  15. Talie says:

I agree, Brad has better creative instincts and taste — even his homes are beautiful.

    • rosettastoned says:

If you think he designs those himself…. trying not to say something mean…. um, if you like nice architecture, study real architects, classic buildings, etc, there is so much work to be celebrated that isn’t ripped-off by a celebrity. What Brad Pitt does is not creativity, it’s art by committee with himself taking all the glory.

  16. misande says:

She needs to take a step back and learn the craft of directing. Maybe take a course as film school or learn under a professional director to see how it works. Because she clearly lacks the skills to become a director. None of her movies as a director have done well with critics at all.

    • Catelina says:

I don’t know that she needs to go to film school (though it wouldn’t hurt), after all, she has spent lots of time on film sets, watching directors work, and I’m sure she’s asked questions of her director friends. What I think would help her the most is to collaborate more, especially if she wants to write scripts (or maybe she should just steer clear of that altogether, quite honestly) and do smaller projects that aren’t quite so ambitious. Ambition is great but I think she really needs to nail down her artistic perspective in smaller works before she can hit the heights she’s reaching for.

  17. desertrose says:

It took a minute for me to figure out what’s different about her face in that first pic but it’s her smile. She does it so rarely in these publicity stories it’s a little confusing. More smiling please! Now if she would stop dressing like she’s perpetually in mourning.

  18. maggie says:

I thought it was Julia Roberts at first.

  19. june says:

Brad is in Cambodia now. There are pics of them out to dinner the other night at the Hard Rock Cafe.

Why is this site not harping on Sandra B latest Bomb, that crisis film? hmmmm

  20. Sherry says:

“Angelina is in Cambodia, working on another film that absolutely no one will see”. Seriously? Considering the subject matter, I think there would be people interested. I know I am. Then again, I don’t tend to bash movies before the fact. One bomb does not define her. Sheesh.

    • Andrea 1* says:

      Well stated 👍
Many films bombed this past few months but Angelina Jolie’s movie is the beat up kid on this site smh… If the writer of this article not see her next film many people will… It is wrong to write off a movie that isn’t even done filming.

  21. Paige says:

Wow this site sure loves talking about Angelina’s bomb. I’ve counted a total of seven articles about BTS failing. We’ve seen a long list of bombs this past month, but I don’t remember them getting this much attention. Plus, it’s ridiculous to assume, no one will see the new movie she’s directing.

    • Andrea 1* says:

      +100000000000

      • lisa2 says:

So interesting that this is the narrative. Where is that headlined for Jennifer lawrence and serena; or Sandra Bullock for OBIC or countless others. Don’t see that for them; just Angelina..

    • Louise177 says:

It’s funny how there are so many stories there are bashing Angelina and BTS. A lot of films with just as big and bigger stars failed and cost the studio so much more money. Claiming that this is going hurt Angelina’s career and “The Big Short” for Brad is ridiculous. When this film was announced it was promoted as a small, art house film so I don’t know why people are claiming it was supposed to be a blockbuster.

  22. meh says:

Much French! So artist! Very culture!

  23. Allison says:

So tired of hearing this called a “vanity” project.

Paste Magazine wrote a great article about this:
