Rihanna in champagne Dior at her annual Diamond Ball: stunning or ill-fitting?

I miss Rihanna. Truly. She’s been so quiet this year, presumably taking some time off and working on her new album (more on that in a moment). On the rare occasions when she does come out for a red carpet, it’s become a major event. Last night was no different – Rihanna held her second-annual Diamond Ball to benefit her Clara Lionel Foundation, and she was by far the biggest “name” on the carpet. It’s so good to see her!

Rihanna wore Dior for the big event. This is a strapless gown and a matching cape in what looks like champagne silk/satin. She also blinged out in some great diamonds. I like the idea of the Dior more than the execution, and the gown is so ill-fitting on Rihanna, I kind of wonder if the piece was from the Dior archives and she just decided to wear it and didn’t feel like she could or should get it tailored. Like, her bust does not fit in the dress. I’m surprised she can breathe.

Meanwhile, everyone’s still waiting on the new album. There were a lot of hopes that she would release her eighth album this year, but it’s not happening. My guess is she’ll drop it in late January at the earliest, probably. Will she go to the Grammys, perhaps to perform a new single? That’s probably the hope, but I doubt it will happen. Rihanna has announced the name of the new album, plus some artwork: the album is called ANTI. And she will be touring next year.

It’s a shame the dress is so crumpled and ill-fitting. She looks very pretty but it could have been a knockout.

    • LadyMTL says:

Yeah, the color looks great on her but that’s about the only nice thing I can say about it. I normally love her fashion choices but this one is not good.

    • tracking says:

Yeah, too bad. I always look forward to her fashion game.

    • zinjojo says:

Yeah, this look did not come together very well, although she’s beautiful. Satin is a tough fabric to wear and most of the time ends up looking wrinkled and lumpy like this. Plus, poor fitting. So nice concept, but didn’t work out in the execution.

  2. Neelyo says:

Yikes! Those tattoos combined with her nail color make her hands look like she should be offering an apple to Snow White.

    • Snazzy says:

Her fingers kind of look like there was henna on them and its fading away … looks strange

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

She got one tattoo (a traditional Maori I believe?) didn’t like it and then got another tatoo over it.

Shame too, this will sound weird, because I always thought she had really pretty feminine hands.

    • Santia says:

At some point, the tattoos get so overwhelming that it looks like someone doodled on her. It’s an odd look and not sure why people do that to themselves.

      • Loulou says:

I kind of like the newer ink on her hand. But I am definitely not crazy about the faded one underneath. Makes her hands look permanently dirty.

    • swack says:

I think it looks like she needs to wash her hands whether henna or a tatoo. Not a good look.

    • tessy says:

Those tattoos are gross and I really hope the trend dies a quick and sudden death. One thing is at least these women can afford to get them taken off.

  3. Nev says:

That touring poster is badass. Werk.

  4. Ashley says:

Her traditional polynesian hand tattoo is fading!

    • Tig says:

Thanks for that info- I thought her hands were dirty!! Agreed- poorly fitting gown all over, and those super pointy heels are ugh.

      • Loopy says:

I think she didn’t like it she stayed with it for like a week and got that other one replaced on top of it. I hope she stops with tattoos, once a tattoo artist said she came to him wanting a tattoo on her face and he either refused or changed her mind.

    • Freebunny says:

Looks more like an arab henna drawing to me.

    • MonicaQ says:

Hand tattoos fade so fast and hurt so much, I couldn’t do it.

  5. terry says:

    Love her she is stunning!

    • bella says:

      ditto.
she is always stunning, isn’t she?
i don’t get the feeling that the way the dress fits on her chest is constricting.
and i’m sure she got the effect she was going for.
everything she wears is calculated and always perfect…

    • Elisa the I. says:

Yes, she is flawless. I wish she would go more into acting, I would love to see her on screen.

  6. Nancy says:

I think she looks lovely. I don’t think she knows how not to be lovely. I don’t dislike her hand tattoos because they are who she is. Can’t wait for her album.

  7. Mimz says:

Love her look, even if it’s a little ill fitting it’s very glamorous, IMO.
I also wanted to say I can’t even look at the artwork for her new album, looks so … Anti-religious (I’m not even super religious or anything).. it makes me uncomfortable. I don’t pay attention to those illumminati stuff but she’s really really pushing it. The promotional videos she’s released so far, the artwork, the title… hmm. Maybe I’m just a big sissy.

    • Frank says:

This illuminati stuff is just silly to me

      • Mimz says:

It is to me too, I don’t even read that stuff, or watch, whatever it is. I don’t believe in such things, but I do think she might be pushing it to keep people talking.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

It’s strange to me because the illuminati people mention usually seems quite strung together and grasping at straws. Just seems like some superstition mixed in with a scary sounding name.

    • Naya says:

I love it when stars troll illuminati conspiracy theorists. I dont see much trolling here though, what specific aspects of the artwork reeks of “eeeeeevil”?

      • Santia says:

I don’t see it either; I see a woman in a suit with a fairly blank background. I don’t think the illuminati stuff is there, unless you’re specifically looking for it.

      • terry says:

To me it seems people are grasping for straws looking for anything illuminati

      • Mimz says:

Not here specifically, some of her other promotional material/artwork/visuals, and i do think she’s definitely trolling the conspiracy theorists. they must be having a field day.
Maybe I’m just not into this look.

    • co_ra says:

right, the whole anti thing is just weird and very creepy.

  8. Frank says:

Missing Rihanna as well. Her face is stunning !

  9. Jayna says:

Rihanna can do no wrong in my eyes fashionwise. She can even rise above an ill-filtted gown and be stunning in it.

  10. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Meh on the dress but yasssss on that tour photo.

I’d actually really love it if that were the ‘look’ for this album/tour. Something kinda grungy and simple while also being intriguing.

  11. Dhavynia says:

Usually live her style but this is a horrible dress and I think the hair doesn’t help, I like the shorter type

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

I like the blue dress she wore last year, I believe it was Zac Posen. It was stunning on her plus her hair & makeup were on point. This dress not so much I don’t really like the color either.

  12. serena says:

I like her new album’s style cover. Though she is always beautiful, the Dior dress is really ill-fitting, her boobs are up to her neck.. it looks just painful.

  13. AntiSocialButterfly says:

    GAH! That dress profile photo!

  14. Eden75 says:

The dress could fit better but she looks beautiful, as always.

I was more shocked at the fact that she is actually covered up. So much so that I called the hubby to look at the picture. Huh….

  15. DEB says:

I love it. Beautiful. The hands and the nails though, no.

  16. Wentworth Miller says:

It doesn’t fit. Its not a “Rihanna” look. I’ve seen her looking better in jeans and Ugg boots.

  17. go girl says:

Album title reminds me of ANTM. Smize! Tooch! Barbie toe!

  18. molina says:

Looks poorly constructed and cheap. Just like her. Vile dress for a most vile woman.

  19. I Choose Me says:

Nope. Not a fan this outfit. The colour is lovely but that’s about all I like about it. As usual though, her confidence elevates it.

  20. Dana says:

I’m a fan of Rihanna-her music, her style, what she stands for. She’s probably the only “mainstream” artist I genuinely like and admire. However, I’ve been concerned lately about her from a distance, as strange as that sounds. I’ve heard rumours about her drug use and recently, there was a blind item about a pop star whose friends will be staging and intervention. Coupled with her lack of public appearances, her questionable choice in men and some photos where she just doesn’t have that “spark”, I tend to think there may be some truth. She’s had a tough life and I know it runs in her family, I speak from experience. I just don’t want her to become another Whitney.

  21. dana says:

Im not a fan of Rihanna’s over the top tastes sometimes but theres no denying she’s a pretty girl, who’s confident in her look, and i respect her and that. But this dress, theres no way to save it. Its not just the fit, its the material. First, this is the heaviest Ive ever seen Rihanna look and I know she’s got a great shape. Its the material giving her stomach and hips she doesn’t have. Also, the cape is wearing me out, its too many things going on here. Her face however looks stellar. Lastly, Rihanna has been plenty busy Kaiser. Problem, she’s been busy doing lots of different things mostly outside of Music. Tour planning, Puma line, Dior shows, Foundation support, Album release, Fashion line, Beauty agency. If anything, Rihanna may have TOO many things going on that personally we’ve lost track of who/what Rihanna is. I know we go thru this with POP stars but it feels like a lot all at once. And do her fans ever mind that she lends her name and brand to too many products/co-brands because Samsung and Amex are are large on her album. Just a thought.

  22. Pondering thoughts says:

“Squeezed boobies” is all the range today.
It is like saying “My boobies are so f*king big that they don’t fit into the dres.”
    It is tarty.

Btw. does Riri get her Maori tattoo on her hand lasered off? She had that second tattoo over her Maori tattoo because apparently she didn’t like the Maori tattoo. But that Maori tattoo gets lighter and lighter… so I wonder?

  23. OrangeCrush says:

Too “prom” for me. It’s the satin. Although I wish we could see the dress without the cape – that is a lot of fabric.

The artwork for her album is killer, and I love that she’s wearing CLOTHES. It’s striking in that there’s nothing being flashed, nothing is spilling out, there’s no “artful” nudity.

  24. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

Ill-fitting. Don’t like the material either.

  25. MissTrial says:

Gorgeous face, hair and makeup. Everything else, including the hands, shoes and jewelry are a mess.

  26. LAK says:

It looks vintage. Charles James Vintage.
