Does Leonardo DiCaprio have the Best Actor Oscar locked down now?

FFN_KM_GoldenGlobe_Arr_011016_51943615

This would ordinarily by the moment when I’d do some massive post full of all the “hot guys” of the Golden Globes. And many hot guys were there, for sure. But I’m tired and you’re probably tired too, so let’s just take a moment for Leonardo DiCaprio, who I no longer find hot in any way. I haven’t found him hot in more than a decade. I had a brief moment – while I watched The Departed for the first time – where I thought, “Oh, he’s still capable of being sexy,” but hot? Not in a long, long time.

But Leo is having a moment. After slogging through years of Oscar-bait films, it seems like it might finally be Leo’s moment. So is it wrong that I still want him to fail? I’m okay with him winning the Golden Globe last night. I guess I’m okay with the standing ovation he got too. I’d even be okay with Leo winning the SAG Award. But come Oscar night, there will still be part of me that hopes they call someone else’s name. It’s not rational at all, I know. It’s actually quite mean-spirited. Whatever. It’s the same reason we sort of wanted Anne Hathaway to fail: Annie and Leo just want it too much. They’re trying too hard. It becomes too easy to root for them to fail. And even if Leo wins the Oscar – which it’s looking more and more like he’s got it locked up – I REALLY hope The Revenant doesn’t sweep the big categories. Alejandro Inarritu should not win back-to-back Oscars, especially for Boy Drama in the Woods, the film that bloated over-budget by tens of millions of dollars.

There was also a moment during the show that went viral (I included it in the recap post) – Leo making a face when Lady Gaga brushes past him. When asked about it after his win, Leo said, “Oh lord – that’s trending, huh? I just didn’t know what was passing me, that’s all!”

And since I don’t want you to think that I hate you, here are some pretty photos of your new boyfriend Oscar Isaac. HIS HAIR.

I don’t get the whole Oscar Isaac thing AT ALL.

    • Mia4s says:

That’s OK, there’s professional help for that. No one is judging you.
      😉

I kid. It’s more for the rest of us.

    • BeeBee says:

He is a good looking guy, but I just don’t get the whole new Star Wars film thang. Very overrated, in my humble opinion. It’s that Daisy Ridley and John Boyega who i just can’t warm to…wanna slap ’em both silly…but that’s just me! LOL!

      • Betti says:

No – i feel the same about Daisy, John’s ok. Daisy is just a terrible actress who spent the movie forcing different variations of the same constipated look.

Oscar wasn’t in it long enough.

    • whatthe says:

      I don’t understand either. Nothing.

    • Dani2 says:

That’s okay, that’s one less person I have to fight for him 🙂

    • Neither did I till the Force Awakens.

    • Sarah B says:

I just see Bernard the Elf from Santa Clause.

    • Jegede says:

@AZ – Same. And he’s too short for me to find hot.

    • Eggland's worst says:

I only know him from Show Me a Hero, which is apparently what he won for and it was really good, imo. I don’t swoon after him, I just thought the mini-series was really good.

    • Josefina says:

Me either. I guess it’s because I’m South American? He’s good looking in a very ordinary way, for me.

      He’s super talented, though.

    • Crumbedtofu says:

Such a good actor. Very different in every film.

  2. QQ says:

NOT WRONG! lol so do I, Like I was telling mimif via text I want him to get everything but Oscar LOL

Also I watched The Revenant this weekend and Frankly it was stunning visually but damned near Tragedy Porn to where like distracted from the story alright already, and sorry but if we didnt give it to robert redford for All Is Lost and and we Clowned The f*ck out of Kristen Stewart Gaspy Mouth breathing Grunty Snow white I don’t see why we gotta give Leo props for this

    • Little Darling says:

Thanks QQ – my thoughts exactly. He should have gotten the oscar for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape if anything. The Revenant was gorgeous, but his acting…was that really oscar worthy? The grunting and lack of dialog? Or is it poetic justice that he will most likely win the Oscar for a role where the scenery and cinematography made his presence that much more stunning?

Also, I’m not all for the giving a person an Oscar simply because they haven’t won one before.

      • J.Mo says:

I agree. He deserved it so early on but was too young for votes. I don’t get the hate though, he’s handsome and talented but overshadowed by the posse and model thing. He might have to pull a George Clooney.

    • Miss M says:

“and sorry but if we didnt give it to robert redford for All Is Lost ”

Ahhhhhhhhh, I finally found someone who agrees with me. I don’t think Robert Redford got an Oscar nomination for All is lost. It was a gigantic snub.

      • Me too says:

“All is Lost” was a FANTASTIC movie. I’ve seen it several times.

      • lunchcoma says:

He did not, and I think it’s a shame, because that would have been a performance that would be really interesting to have in that race.

    • Me ThreeI says:

I was dragged to The Revenant since I feel the same about Leo…for some reason I’ve just never liked the guy. And we left halfway thru the movie. There are movies that seem made just to “show” the world how great an actor is. Like look what I did to make this movie. I suffered. That movie is just one big suffer fest. Yes the cinematography was amazing but otherwise I had better things to do with my time than watch a bloated, over rated boy child prove to us all that he was a great actor. Not buying it Leo!

  3. Allie says:

I don’t think Leo and Anne are similar at all. Leo is try hard for sure, but he had solid movies for decades. Anne was so who me? And I don’t think “dreams do come true” will be in Leo’s acceptance speech.

    • minx says:

Agree. There are lots of less deserving actors who have Oscars.

      • V4Real says:

I hope he wins just so I can sit back and laugh at all the hate he will get on this site. He’s a darn good actor. I don’t give a flying you know what about his dating habits. How does who and how he dates affects us? He’s not a politician he’s an actor.

I haven’t heard anything about him being a racist, rude to fans, kicking puppies or slapping babies or anything of that nature so he’s ok in my book.

    • Kennedy says:

100% agree with this. Leo has never had the same try-hard attitude as Annie. She deserved her Oscar but her awards season pole dance was SO hard to sit through. It was like Taylor Swift/Kate Winslet “who me?” x100. Leo has made really great films for over a decade. He deserves an Oscar just as much as any other person who has won. He has done a lot for the film industry and environment.

      • Crumbedtofu says:

“It was like Taylor Swift/Kate Winslet “who me?” x100.”
Best line in the whole thread.

“Women just get punished more for being ambitious than men.”

Not true. Gender has nothing to do with it. AH was so unprofessional. If you want to lobby hard, have some substance instead of going on and on about yourself. Take Leo’s GG acceptance speech. Showed awareness of team work and other people in his universe and a context beyond one’s own navel. To some extent it’s all PR and scripted, but awards season is when the amateurs (Anne) are sorted from the pros (Leo).

“And what exactly has Leo done for the environment? ”

Donated over $15 million and raised over $40 million – 2015 alone. Look it up. The guy is a huge green machine. Al Gore’s – though he means well – message is quite dubious among some in the green movement because he sells the idea that you can have it all – not cut consumption, etc. David Suzuki is more realistic.

    • Nic919 says:

Anne Hathaway was in solid movies before Les Miserables, so I don’t see how she is any different than Leo. Women just get punished more for being ambitious than men. And since he is banging models that makes him cool so his desperation for an Oscar isn’t viewed as dorky as Anne.

And what exactly has Leo done for the environment? Show up to a few conferences? Al Gore has done far more, along with David Suzuki. I don’t see Leo heading up movements of any sort. Compare his supposed interest to what Angelina Jolie does with the UN and you see her doing a lot more and taking significant part in the causes she promotes.

Leo may not be sappy, but his comments about indigenous people sure seemed fake. Are there even any with a speaking role in the movie? That and his inability to understand that a Chinook is a normal environmental phenomenon in Alberta that happens every year really makes me questions how much he is really aware of environmental issues.

      • The Original Mia says:

        All of this!

      • Lex says:

Their careers are in no way comparable! He has had a solid career for the past TWENTY years (and worked consistently before that too). Anne was in kids movies until about 10 years ago has has had maybe 2-3 critically acclaimed roles in that time frame. It isn’t sexist at all, it’s FACTS

      • Josefina says:

This. Anne is an accomplished actress, she’s been in several critically acclaimed films and her performances are always well received by the critics. If you think she’s exhausting and try hard and not that talented that’s fine, but don’t diminish her accomplishments as an actress.

      • Kennedy says:

I don’t think it’s about discrediting Anne’s acclaimed films. She has been in some acclaimed films – namely Rachel Getting Married, TDKR, Brokeback Mountain, etc. She has also been in just as many misfires. If we’re comparing Leo’s string of successes to Anne’s – there isn’t an actual comparison considering he has been in FAR more acclaimed films that have also made money and she’s been in FAR fewer acclaimed films. That being said, she is a good actress with an inconsistent knack of picking good films/good material. For every TKDR and Rachel Getting Married, she makes a Song One and One Day. The same can’t be said about Leo. The only “flop” of his is somewhere between The Beach and Body of Lies. You would have to go back YEARS to find a bad film.

      • Pondering thoughts says:

        @ Nic919
I think you overlooked a few things.

Leo has raised a lot of money for environmental projects. He visits lots of environmental projects. He donates lots of money to environmental projects (his own and that what he collected). He makes documentaries about environmental issues / helps promoting them.
He has done a lot. And he has been made UN ambassador for the environment for his efforts. That type of ambassador-ship is relatively new. Jolie’s type of ambassador-ship is age old. If you want to compare Jolie and Dicaprio then you should be fair. Although Jolie rambles a lot about civil war and refugees and violence against women she does never point out where these problems come from. The US military interventions in several middle east countries do cause a lot of the very same things Jolie complains about. But she never says that if the USA would stop their military campaigns then there would be less refugees and less violence and less starvation. Jolie never mentions that in her speeches. She advertises curing the symptoms by building refugee camps and by sending food and medical aid. But Jolie doesn’t even try to point out how to cure the disease (or preventing it). She has no long-term solutions. She doesn’t have the guts to publicly challenge the militarist approach in US foreign politics.
Dicaprio does quite openly say that there are corporate interests behind a lot of these environmental damages. He highlights publicly both the symptoms as well as the disease and he points out possible short-term and long-term solutions. Dicaprio has the guts to challenge those who cause these environmental damages.

Just have a look at the current refugee crisis. Europe has difficulties to cope with all those refugees who fled countries which were bombed by the US.
Jolie doesn’t say anything about that except “build camps” or “send food and medicine”. She doesn’t suggest the USA should offer shelter to these refugees although the USA are responsible for these people becoming refugees.

      • KaleIt says:

        Love your posts, Pondering.

    • Eleonor says:

Agreed. And Gwyneth Paltrow won an oscar for an overrated movie, Leo has a pretty solid career, I even if this movie it’s not that much, I think he has proven to be oscar-worthy long time ago..

    • Eggland's worst says:

Amen! Go get’em Leo! I LLLOOOVVVEEE the Departed.

  4. Cindy says:

Blech. I hope not, but I’m sure he’ll win. Things do always go his way. He’s a decent actor, i know, I know, but i’m tired of him. I just don’t want to look at him, or the newest blond 22 year old again for awhile.

Was he smirking in a haha way at gaga, or ogling her? I can’t tell.

    • FingerBinger says:

You can be sure he wasn’t ogling Lady Gaga.

    • Arock says:

reading something totally different- i think they slept together and he never called back or played out slowly, she was a little bitter, but totally over it. lets get all jfk video crazy here….
      1) they call her name
      2) hes clearly sharing a joke with someone. it would make sense that its about the award winner considering the timing. (polly a joke about some weird freaky thing s/he did/would do in bed with her)
      3) hes chuckling. she gets up, walks by the chair to the stage, clearly doing a drive by bumping.
      4) he realizes its her and does the oh, shit face. the “oh um, hey. totally didnt see you there….no, we were talking about another lady gaga, you wouldnt know her, she lives in canada…so uh hows music going….!?”, face.

i know, i know…thats some high level, paranoid vine reading but i smell it, i call it.

      • Esmom says:

I definitely think she bumped him deliberately and flirtatiously. But I don’t think he’s ever been with her or has any interest in her. His last facial expression conveyed that pretty clearly.

    • Rachel says:

To me, it looked like she was all “OUT OF MY WAY PEASANTS!” and knocked his elbow off his chair rather forcefully. It looked like that look you get when someone is taking themselves waaaaay to seriously and blows up at you. Not making excuses for him. I think he’s a douche, and both my husband and I were yelling STFU Leo at the tv during his speech, but I don’t really think he was disrespecting her.

      • Bridget says:

This is a woman who thanked her castmates for letting her shine, after all. I thought his reaction was a little more “doens’t she know it’s just a Golden Globe?”

      • saltandpepper says:

I think something happened between them and it went a bit sour. He most likely never contacted her again, or ignored her. She is bumping into him on purpose and quite frankly, I’d be a bit scared too.

      • Insomniac says:

Yeah, to me it looked like he was reacting to Gaga pretty much knocking his arm off his chair when she passed. I’d side-eye the hell out of anyone who did that to me too.

I really hope he does win the Oscar, just so this stupid “Har har, Leo doesn’t have an Oscar” meme dies once and for all. It’s beyond annoying.

      • Pondering thoughts says:

Yep, to me it looked like she bumped into him on purpose as there was enough room to pass without bumping.
There was a rumour somewhere that Lady Gaga’s husband wanted to work with Leo and it didn’t work out or something like that?

  5. InvaderTak says:

I don’t get why the Gaga moment is such a big deal. I think it’s a leap to assume his facial expression was in any way related to Gagme. It looks like she pinched his arm to me, maybe trying to get him to move his arm? which would be rude on her part. It looks like she intentionally touched him. She could have just as easily raised her arm up a bit and avoid the whole thing.

    • ab says:

I don’t get it either. he was clearly talking to or laughing with someone across the aisle when gaga bumped into him.

  6. Mia4s says:

Only here for Oscar (much like Leo, but probably not the same Oscar). Dear lord, Oscar Isaac is sex and charisma defined. Also he gave a great performance so if the Golden Globes were real, this would be deserved.! 😉

DiCaprio morphed into Jack Nicholson, there’s nothing appealing there. He’ll likely win his Oscar. Whatever. He’s desperate and “meh”.

  7. Elizabeth says:

Oscar Isaac is meh to me.

  8. Nut says:

Leo does work hard for the Oscar, so i’d have no problem if he wins

  9. Lora says:

Why compare him to Anne?! I really don’t get all this hate… There are so many other actors who hustled way harder

    • Julia says:

Agree with you, Lora. Leo works hard in every movie he is in and he deserved the Oscar long time ago already!

    • Jegede says:

Agreed. Leo has not hustled any harder than others IMO.

Eddie Redmayne for example is practically batting down the walls for an Oscar, complete with convenient pregnancy but he’s not called out on his blatant thirst.

I hope Leo wins and no matter how often the blogs snipe at him, in real world Leo remains a bonafide star, who works on interesting projects with prestige directors that always makes money.

      • Edie says:

I haven’t seen that much of Leo except some nice, adult interviews where he calmly talks to people and isn’t on the verge of a handstand. Eddie Redmayne isn’t called-out because everyone looks at him and thinks, “Isn’t he sweet? He’s the loveliest! Look at his lovely wife and now a baby! Aww! How perfect and wonderful!” Uh, no, he’s not a fairy tale, he’s the Omen.

  10. Shewolf says:

I wish they’d just nominate him, give him the darn thing and get it over with. Tired of hearing him whine and seeing his try-hard politicking Oscar face. Sigh.

  11. Julia says:

I want Leo to win the Oscar, because he is one of the greatest male actors of our generation. He deserved the Oscar long time ago already and since less talented actors have this trophy it is only fair that he gets it now!

    • stinky says:

      im w/ YOU!

    • Glimmerbunny says:

Agree SO much. Leo is my favorite actor and has always been great. His Oscar is overdue and I will be really happy for him if he wins.

Poe DAMNeron is looking great and I’m so happy he won, even if I haven’t watched his series (yet).

    • lozface says:

I agree!!! I could list at least 6 movies where i thought he was insanely great and oscar-worthy. He never sounds pretentious when he talks about acting either.

Having seen The Martian and The Revenant – I can’t even fathom Matt Damon beating Leo. There is no comparison, in my opinion anyway. Matt is good, but the movie isn’t even in the same league.

I have no hate for Leo, and have always respected him as an actor and I hope he makes dozens more awesome movies. Those that hate him, can chose not to watch.

    • maria says:

Agree 100%. Leo is the younger generations Jack Nicholson. Both great actors in my opinion. He is totally deserving of an Oscar.

  12. Bridget says:

I’m not comfortable making that prediction until we actually know who’s nominated. I think Leo’s the heavy favorite, but that it’ll be interesting to see more seasoned campaigners work the circuit because that really isn’t his strong suit.

  13. msd says:

He’s had it locked down for a while. It’s the only Oscar this year that is locked down (barring some crazy, offensive scandal or arrest).

Everything else is wide open right now, which makes a nice change in awards season.

Also: insiders are saying not to put too much stock in The Revenant wining BP, BD, BA. The Globes picked Boyhood/Linklater last year so there was an element of trying to make it up this time after picking the wrong Oscar horse to back.

  14. Yeses says:

I think Leo is a damn good actor, and his Oscar has been a long time coming, The Departed, Django, he was so good in The Revenant, the movie in itself I found so well made, sorry if I sound all fan girl-y but I say give the man his Oscar, he has earned it, many times over.

P.S. I think Redmayne is the only one standing between Leo and his Oscar.

    • msd says:

Redmayne isn’t considered a big threat. The film isn’t performing strongly in awards season and he won last year.

As for Leo. Not my fave actor but usually good, and he gets props for developing such strong career after being a pin up/heartthrob. I also like it that he turns down sequels, big franchises and superheroes. He’s pretty much the only actor in the world right now who can get audiences in large numbers to go out and see adult drama.

      • minx says:

        Agree.

      • stinky says:

He is compelling to watch – however, if you don’t like him to begin with, I guess its harder to let yourself like his performances. I think he’s a phenomenal actor… ‘Revenant’ only just now opened in my town, and im going TONITE.
I want him to win and win BIG.

      • Emma - The JP Lover says:

@MSD, who wrote: “Redmayne isn’t considered a big threat. The film isn’t performing strongly in awards season and he won last year.

Spencer Tracy (1936 and 1937), Katherine Hepburn (1967 and 1968), and Tom Hanks (1993 and 1994) won back to back Oscars. It’s not outside the realm of possibility, and the Awards Season has really just gotten into swing with the Golden Globes. The upcoming ‘peer to peer’ voting system (actors, directors, producers, and writers voting for actors, directors, producers, and writers) for the remaining Awards will really tell the tale.

    • Crumbedtofu says:

Yes, his Django role was amazing! I’d forgotten about that.

    • Cynthia says:

@Yess I totally forgot about departed. Is ridiculous that he even has to campaign for this Oscar. Seriously.

Leo is up there with the greats. When I watch LEO, he becomes the role, I don’t see LEO. That is what good actors do. You know another person that is up and coming is Joseph Gordon Levitt. He reminds me of LEO has well

    • msd says:

      @Emma – The JP Lover

Technically, very few things are outside the realm of possibility, but Redmayne isn’t considered a big threat for the reasons I stated: the film is underperforming and they don’t favour giving out Oscars two years in a row. Redmayne isn’t “standing between Leo and his Oscar”. Cranston and Damon are ahead of him but even they are well behind Leo.

  15. nches says:

someone commented the other day that Leo won hearts without having or showing his six packs and I agree. I understand if he dies nothing for you but here is a man who is getting praises for his role and for some reason you don’t want him to win an Oscar and that he’s also not hot. Leo has never cashed in on his looks. Never. His work speaks for him. I don’t think he cares about being hot and he never cared during the leomania days. if he did, he would have hit the gym and shown us results on magazines over the years. I know he’s not a favourite here but I want him to win that Oscar so most of you would lose your shit.
ps: if Angelina jolie can get an Oscar, so can Leo
    pps: I find him hot

    • Esmom says:

Yeah, I don’t think he’s ever traded on his looks and I don’t find him overexposed. You see way more celebs of lesser stature getting papped. He doesn’t seem any more insufferable than many of the other guys in Hollywood (I’m looking at you Jesse Eisenberg and Jonah Hill) and he is talented. I only found him hot in one movie, The Departed. I thought he was swoon worthy, but never before or after, it’s weird.

    • stinky says:

      ‘Two words:
      ‘Basketball Diaries”
(he was amazing – AGES ago .. he is an astounding actor)

    • J.Mo says:

Good point that I hadn’t even considered, you’re so right! He deserved awards early on.

  16. penny says:

Well-deserved! I went to the movies to see the revenant this weekend and it did not disappoint. Great scenery and cinematography. Awesome storyline – rather tough to watch at times. Definitely not easy to digest. Leo really IS that good in that movie and he got out of his comfort zone. However I kind of loved Tom Hardys performance even more.
I seriously hope he’ll get that Oscar now so we can tick that off at last.

  17. Georgia says:

I think he deserves it. Annie is not that good of an actress and still got it

  18. AmyB says:

I really don’t get the hate for Leo either…..I really hope he wins the Oscar this year. IMO he should have won for The Departed, but he refused to campaign for the Best Actor nod that year. He is extremely talented, This Boy’s Life and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape — wonderful films. It kind of reminds me of Al Pacino not winning until Scent of a Woman. Pacino should have won his Oscar years before for Michael Corleone of The Godfather films. Anyway, I don’t find Leo irritating at all; nothing compared to Anne Hathaway that is. I’m pulling for him, but I really hope the Revenant doesn’t win best picture. Spotlight or Room are better choices to me.

  19. CornyBlue says:

I like Leo but i never got his overdue narrative. All the times he has been nominated i genuinely thought there was someone better. I personally am rooting for Fassbender not that i would hate it if Leo won but i am sick of Manpain: The Film.

  20. Tiffany27 says:

Oscar Isaac is like a human cinnamon bun. I love the f-ck out of that man. And congrats to Leo, he seems like a gross person, but dude is a phenomenal actor.

  21. anne_000 says:

Lady Gaga was purposefully rude, imo.

Leo had a right to react. It was instinctual on his part.

Since I didn’t watch the Globes, I didn’t see Gaga’s speech and anything Leo might have done during her speech.

  22. BeeBee says:

Never got the Leonardio DeCrapio thang, but, hey, varying tastes and preferences are what make the world go round. He’s got that “Mr. Piggy” thing in the face goin’ on, and he comes across as smarmy. Pass.

  23. JenB says:

I really don’t get the hate with Leo. He’s overdue, going all the way back to Gilbert Grape. He’s been in so many of my favorite films.
Gotta say that I love that he and Kate Winslet both won and hugged each other. That’s right, Jack and Rose foreva! Man, I found him SO attractive in Titanic and Romeo and Juliet. Definitely agree that the hot fell off him in the last decade. And sure, he obviously wants the Oscar but he’s no Anne. I haven’t seen the Revenant and it doesn’t really appeal to me but I’m ready for Jack Dawson to get his. He’s worthy of it.

  24. Tallia says:

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape was brilliant. Leo deserved the Oscar for that portrayal. The Revenant is cinematic heaven, but I don’t agree he deserves the Oscar for his role. Sorry (not sorry). The Academy is known for their “make up Oscars”, they love when you suck up to them as well, so I would be shocked if he didn’t get the award. I would love an Academy who gives out the damn award based on deserving the award at that particular time and not because they screwed up by not giving it to you previously or because you have the best brown-nose game. I have stopped watching the Oscars for those reasons.

  25. Sarah01 says:

I hope he wins the Oscar, and he reacted perfectly, Gaga was so rude – who does she think she is!

    • Justwastingtime says:

She is golden globe winner and he is arguably a rude audience member..

    • Crumbedtofu says:

I think she was so shocked at her performance she didn’t even realise what she was doing. She seemed nervous on stage.

  26. Well says:

Leo will probably win the Oscar and he will be more insufferable than ever. He will have won the Oscar not because he gave the performance of his life, but because he just wore people down. I think even critics who know the movie and his acting weren’t all that are just too exhausted at this point to mount any substantial criticism.

LOL at Lady Gaga bumping him. She knows who the insufferable frat boys are. I like her.

  27. Dani2 says:

He’s a sure thing for a nom and he’ll probably win too – I think the people who are genuine threats to his win are Matt Damon, Bryan Cranston and Michael Fassbender – Eddie Redmayne has gotten a lot of critic nominations and major noms as well but I just don’t see him winning it two years in a row.

  28. Betti says:

He does deserve an Oscar as he has given good performances over the years but from what I’ve read about The Revenant its all style over substance. I thought he should have won for Wolf of Wall Street, which was the first of his recent movies that i actually watched all the way through.

  29. Rhiley says:

I want Leo to lose too, and I am hoping that with Damon’s Globes win for The Martian there may be a small, small chance he could take the Oscar for Best Male Lead as well. I bet if they call someone other than Leo’s name on Oscar night, it will be very much like when Debra Winger lost for Terms of Endearment, plus he will probably ban the Oscars for life. BTW, did he bring his mom to the Globes?

  30. KCat says:

    Get it, Leo!!

  31. I Choose Me says:

Sandra Bullock has an Oscar ( I liker her but that was not an award worthy performance) Leo has been consistently good to great in movies for more than a decade and so I’m actually rooting for him to win one. I dgaf how thirsty he is.

Sure lots of people who deserve one have not been nominated, I suspect because they didn’t campaign and didn’t want to deal with the whole awards circuit hoopla. But here’s a talented actor who’s actively campaigning and if that’s what he has to do to win one then I’m Team Leo all the way.

  32. Tessd says:

Nah, they are going to give the Oscar to Matt.

  33. Saks says:

The reason I dont get the Leo hate is because everyone says he tries so hard, but up until TWOWS he never actually truly campaigned. Maybe he got tired of the jokes or whatever, but even now that he is campaigning he is still no worse that some of the other nominees (like Eddie Redmayne who has campaigned hard for two years now).

Anyway I like Leo, I usually enjoy his movies and he is a good actor.

  34. mire usted says:

Leo gave the best acceptance speech of the night. I’m happy for him. I hope he wins the Oscar. I’m sure he wished his Oscar came from a Marty Scorsese film, but It’s long overdue.

  35. Chinoiserie says:

I haave not wanted Leo to win an Oscar because I feel he does mot deserve it. I have seen nearly all his films and he just does noh impress me as an actor, his films are just so good that they flatter him. But he is still a good actor if not great, he has waited forever, this is a weak year for male acting performances and this could be a career award for making many good films to happen. So he can have it.

  36. SM says:

Oscar is delicious. And Kaiser I feel exactly the same about Leo. And I am not ok with the standing ovation either because it clearly just maked him even more smug. Wasn’t sure that was humanly possible. But i guess Lei Dicaprio is another level of smug

  37. KBeth says:

I don’t get the Leo hate??
I’m not a huge fan but I think he’s a solid actor, always outstanding. I haven’t seen The Revenant but I must agree with whoever said What’s Eating Gilbert Grape was Oscar worthy.

  38. felixswan2 says:

I like actors who are able to disappear in their roles. Where you forget you are watching the movie star and you are just watching an interesting character. Leo has never been able to do that for me (ok, except for This Boys Life, and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, but those roles were so early on in his career). He picks great movies to be in, but I never find him great.

    • Crumbedtofu says:

I think it’s that he’s not a physical actor. Guys like Daniel Day Lewis, Jared Leto, Fass, and Christian Bale really tick the physical changes box, but Leo is more cerebral. The Revenant wouldn’t have worked as well if he had to do it without a massive layer of clothing. I still think he’s an exceptional actor but I don’t think he’d do well in a boxing movie or acting an athlete or something like that.

  39. Pants says:

Kaiser, if you’re petty than so am I, because I secretly don’t want him to get the Oscar either. I kind of want him to never get one until he’s like 80 and they give him some lifetime achievement nonsense.

  40. SusanneToo says:

Thank you, Kaiser, for Oscar I. and his hair. He’s looking good.

  41. lila fowler says:

Leo has the Best Actor Oscar locked down, yes. The others may as well not even show up. They gave him a standing O last night… for a meaningless award. It’s his year. It is known.

I don’t get the Oscar Isaac love, either but I think that’s because I’m not into super short guys. I don’t buy that he’s 5’9. I am 5’9 and I towered over him when I stood next to him in line in NYC. He’s way shorter than that. And his hands are tiny little troll hands.

  42. Josefina says:

I want him to win so people can stop with this whole “he’s the greatest actor!” “he’s been so snubbed!” crap. He’s been nominated several f**king times and he’s an A-list actor incredibly in demand. Far more talented actors and actresses have been unrecognised for much better work.

I’m not really rooting for anyone in the male category this year, so yeah, Leo, you can have it. And you, internet, you can finally shut up.

    • Juliette says:

This! While I think he is a great actor, I don’t think that The Revenant was that good. I thought The Martian was very good and I am not even a Matt Damon fan. I concur with everything you said. Not a fan of Leo at all but the guy can act for sure. I think he has had other roles where he was far more worthy of an award, imho.

      • dAsh says:

This. I want him to win an Oscar but for a deserving role. Just because he’s been long overdue for an Oscar doesn’t mean he deserves to get it with his role in this movie. It just doesn’t make sense.

    • Farhi says:

“Far more talented actors and actresses have been unrecognised for much better work.”

      Like who?

  43. Laura says:

I love Leonardo DiCaprio – always have, always will. I think he’s got beautiful eyes a d his acting is superb! He may be a bit shallow when it comes to his dating life but we all have our flaws. I hope he wins an Oscar!

  44. AJ says:

IA with everyone saying Leo is overdue for a best actor win, probably more than one or two of them probably.

Hell, when Titanic was released in 3D a couple of years ago, I went and saw it again and was floored by how good Leo was in it and how I hadn’t realized it when it came out the first time. With 20 years between that movie being made and now, we have come to know that Leo is not really at all like Jack Dawson (and according to James Cameron, Leo kept wanting to make the character more tragic or darker), but he SOLD it so well that we all took it for granted. In hindsight, I think he should have been nominated in 98 in place of Jack Nicholson, who won for As Good as It Gets that year (and of course Nicholson basically IS that character and has played that character numerous times).

    • Zaytabogota says:

I agree, he was robbed for titanic, his was the only category the movie wasn’t nominated for!!! The best part of the movie and the only reason most of us went to see it! It was like he was being punished because he was so popular.

It’s really weird looking back at the mania that surrounded him and the insane level of fame he found himself in. It must have been terrifying for him at times. It’s a testament to his character how he stayed focused on his work and didn’t allow himself to be swallowed by it all. I don’t think I’ve seen anything on that level since.

  45. Crumbedtofu says:

Love him though I’ve never found him attractive in that sense. I get why lots of people don’t like him because of his dating history but he’s a real professional and I loved his GG speech and loved The Revenant so I’m rooting for Leo. That meme is sooooo funny.

  46. Zaytabogota says:

He deserves an Oscar, I’m hoping when he wins that he’ll delve into comedy for a movie. He was funny on snl and I’d love to see him in something light for a change. He also gives great speeches. He actually thinks about what he’s saying and uses fully formed sentences. So much better than the usual ‘oh, um…..ah..ee gee….I’d like to thank God….er’.

In a world where people who can’t act (George Clooney, Natalie Portman) have Oscars very obviously due to campaigning and Hollywood politics, it’s ridiculous that talented, consistently productive people are repeatedly overlooked.

    • Crumbedtofu says:

+a million. So true about GG and NP! But George was outstanding in Syriana.

    • Farhi says:

Exactly. I was just thinking – Gwyneth has an Oscar, JLaw has an Oscar ( she can act, not as good as Leo though, but she has only been in the business for about 5 years). Now we are looking at actresses like Larsen, Vilkander and Ronan being considered for an Oscar after just one high profile movie. Nothing is wrong with that, they are talented, but Leo has a dozen of them.
Looking at men – Eddie Redmayne has an Oscar with just one mediocre movie. Mathew M has an Oscar just after one serious movie. Neither of them are as good of actors as Leo.

  47. Guest says:

Seriously? I mean really? Seriously? You compare Anne and Leo? Hahahaha I can’t stop laughing…. THAT guy has been snubbed for years. He has been in the business for over 20 years. When he got his first important nomination Anne was probably still dreaming of becoming an actress. I unterstand hate. Envy. Dislike. But come on. Leo is one of the finest, if not the best of his generation. And I am not even a fan of him.

    • Sarah01 says:

Yes he is a find actor, he chooses good movies with great scripts.
To anyone who has never lived in sub zero temperatures let alone act in it, it’s very difficult.
One time I accidentally slipped and fell into a shallow river and it was -22 that day. I was only in knee deep and it I was frozen immediately. The shock to your body is intense.
I don’t understand why the other posters have a problem with his personal life, he’s not a pedo, he’s not married and cheating on his wife, he’s doesn’t have substance abuse issues, he’s a professional. The girls he dates are fully aware of the situation and he makes no promises. These are consenting adults.
His work speaks for itself and this was a legitimate win much like Oscar Isaac.

  48. NUTBALLS says:

I’ve seen all the films represented by the Best Actor nominees this season and it belongs to Leo, hands down. He was amazing in it and deserves the accolades, period.

What doesn’t deserve the Oscar is the film itself. The only thing it deserves other than Best Actor is Best Cinematography, which was amazing. The script itself DRAGGED. The basic storyline was set up within the first hour and then it dragged on and on for another 90 minutes before it slowly wrapped up in the final 30 minutes. My criteria for Best Picture requires that it keep me engaged and Spotlight as well as The Big Short accomplished this, in addition to great acting and a great script. Hell, even The Hateful Eight with it’s similar running time of 2:45 min never incited me to look at my watch. The Revenant didn’t deserve best picture last night and doesn’t deserve the Oscar.

    Ok, rant over.

  49. psychic prediction says:

    Bafta = Fassbender
    SAG = Leo
    Oscar = Cranston

I don’t think Leo is going to get nominated for an Oscar this year

  50. SashimiV says:

Honestly, Leonardo is an average actor at best. The characters may change, but his expressions remain the same. He’s good at playing himself.

  51. madly says:

i would laugh if he did lose.

  52. Chloe says:

Tom Hardy was much better than Leo. He is Scottish but was insanely believable in his character no doubt about it. Leo’s character lacks any kind of character development. The Revenant was desperate, “how much more painful bs can we put Leo’s character through to really see him suffer” and extreme close ups of his wounds. All thanks this special effects and makeup. Leo’s character seems to starve for weeks? Months? And doesn’t seem to even lose a bit of weight. He could’ve worked harder on the physical portion of his character instead of letting makeup and stunt guys do all the work. Leo was all huff and puff no substance, no true depth, not much effort. Any good actor could pull off his role to a T. He is a great actor but nothing Oscar or reward worthy in my eyes in this particular film. I used to be a fan but a few days ago at a screening of Revenant there was a q & a with Leo. He was so full of himself. “In my opinion, this is the greatest film I have ever seen and there is no movie like it and there will never be a movie like it.” We get it. You love this movie and you love yourself in it. Also seemed like the producer and everyone involved was just ass kissing him throughout all of the filming. Stroking his ego into premature eruption. He even mentioned how the Native American in one scene was eating really raw bison while Leo was given something cooked. Leo didn’t even do any of his stunts. There were hoards of stunt men. Honestly the imagery was beautiful. If you only cut out all the actors and made it all about the Natives it would’ve been Oscar worthy. This is all just my opinion! Also, Leo, please be yourself and finally come out. Maybe some authenticity will loosen him up as an actor.

    • Guest says:

See…. I think Leo is the best. As for Hardy opinions differ. He is totally overrated in my eyes and has a face which I would like to punch. Several times.

      • Stella says:

Yes, opinions differ. In my opinion Tom Hardy’s one of the best actors. He immerses himself in every performance and was fantastic in The Revenant! I want to hug him when we meet…

    • Pondering thoughts says:

      @ Chloe

He did do a lot of the stunts all by himself. That ride in that freezing river, for example. You can see his face clearly for 10 seconds several times. Leo did that stunt. Perhaps there were two more stuntmen who did that stunt, too, because you can’t do a ride in a freezing river that often per day. Even stuntmen get hypothermia as quickly as anybody else.
And due to the beard you can’t see the weight loss. But it is there: for example when he crawls out of his grave. Or when he is sitting bare-chested in that house telling his story. He is quite skinny.

  53. Farhi says:

Leo deserves an Oscar, and I don’t get the hate of him.
I strongly dislike his Lothario, use them and lose them. image. But when I watch his movies, I see great acting and I completely forget just how much I dislike Leo the person. To me that is true acting.
I can’t think of a single movie of his that I dislike. Is there another such actor working currently with such a strong record. He doesn’t have flops, all his work is high quality.

  54. Sara says:

Leo might be a jerk in real life and that director might be an egomaniac but The Revenant was a really good movie. Leo played the father role well enough for me to forget it was a famous actor and kind of get sucked into the drama. Plus they did a great job adapting the script from the book. In the book the guy just wanted his stuff back. I think the way they filmed and changed the plot worked. It was probably one of the best movies I’ve seen all year (but I haven’t seen starwars yet). It was a REALLY good movie. I don’t get Anne vibes from him either. Anne was so freaking annoying and I didn’t like Les Mis at all. So there is that. Sometimes people win Oscars for like what? Totally horrible movies.
