Tom Brady: ‘I never had any coffee or anything like that. I just never tried it.’

Last week, Gisele and Tom Brady’s personal chef gave an interview that rocked the sports/modeling/gossip world. The interview was so shocking because it sounded like Tom and Gisele and their kids just live on tree bark and quinoa. Their diet excludes sugar, flour, caffeine, dairy, MSG, nightshades, peppers, mushrooms, and their diet is extremely light on carbs. Basically, no one go over to Tom and Gisele’s house for dinner because it will be no fun at all. Gisele will probably hiss at you for eating an after-dinner mint. Anyway, Tom was chatting with a local Boston media outlet this week and he was asked about the no-caffeine part of his diet. And as it turns out, he’s serious about it. He never drinks coffee, and he’s never had coffee full-stop.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, a renowned health fanatic, said Monday that he has never had coffee. While discussing Saturday’s playoff game involving the Chiefs during his contractual weekly radio appearance on WEEI, Brady said, “I never had any coffee or anything like that. I just never tried it.”

Brady has three children. And he doesn’t drink coffee? The remarks followed a conversation on the radio about his eating habits, which were recently detailed by Brady’s personal chef, Allen Campbell. When asked why he didn’t eat fruit, Brady noted, “It’s mostly a taste thing.”

He was also asked what his favorite cheat food was when he went off-diet. After an awkwardly long pause, he replied, “Probably burgers or ice cream or something like that.”

[From Boston Globe]

“After an awkwardly long pause” is my favorite editorial note ever. Tom’s mind was scrambling… would Gisele listen to this interview? How much trouble would he be in if she heard that he occasionally ate a burger, hold the tomatoes? Would his answers be misconstrued as “what Tom does on his CHEAT DAYS”?

As for the coffee thing… um, I don’t drink coffee either. I have tried it, I just never developed a taste for it. It happens, people! There are some people that just don’t have a taste for coffee. Of course, in my case, it’s not part of some strict elimination diet set up by Gisele Bundchen.

    He’s quite articulate, isn’t he?

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

      Ha!

    • Josephine says:

Meh – not enough of an interview to comment on how articulate he is, although I do think he’s often a bit awkward in live interviews. He’s definitely got some level of smarts – quarterbacks have to be, and he is one of the best.

    • JudyK says:

Ha. And never even “tried” coffee and has to stop to think about a favorite cheat food…this tells me he’s boring as hell.

      • Sam says:

I imagine it went something like this:
        “Favorite cheat food?”
*Brady pauses, eyes look up to brain*
**Cheat food… psh. If I cheat its to get more money or fame, not more calories… Ugh. Simpletons. No restraint, no class… What do “normal” people eat? Normal people food… normal people food… ugh, these are the same idiots who laughed at me for wanting a white pool cover, what do morons like this eat regularly… probably something really greasy or really sweet… ugh… still can’t believe they didn’t have white pool covers… **
“I’d say probably burgers or ice cream or something like that.
**Good answer, Tom. Something like that implies I might eat other stuff too, that’s a good vague answer. See, I can talk to normal people. I can’t wait until my publicist reads this interview. Yeeeaaaahhhhhh WOOOOOO TOM BRADY TOM BRADY TOM BRADY**

      • Nancy says:

I’ve heard people say they never had a cigarette, a drink, smoked pot and things like that, but coffee. Oh my. My grandfather ate my grammies food smothered in butter and sauces and ate meat on a regular basis. Eggs every morning. His bff on the other hand was what they then called a health nut, wanted to live to be 100. He skipped the great food and nibbled on veggies. He died at 68. Grandpa danced on his grave and lived to be 85 years old. Genetics plays a roll, as does exercise and not smoking. But to deny one’s self treats is sad to me. Life should be celebrated with food and drink. This isn’t to say that Tom’s non caffeine life is wrong, but some folks carry things to extremes. Eat dessert first, life is short.

      • Lambda says:

Nancy, unrelated to the issue of Brady the Deflator, but look around, America seems to have an excessive problem of celebrating life to the point of premature death,
(said she while digesting a huge dinner).

    • BossyKat says:

I’ve always felt Tom Brady was dumb as a doorknob, but now I’m pretty certain of it.

The coffee thing isn’t what tipped me to this, although it represents just an overall lack of curiosity. He’s a roboton-jock. Coffee has never been in his qb repertoire, therefore he’s not interested or curious enough to find out why there’s a fuss about it. He’s like George W Bush but not as bright.

I think he’s basically been born/bred to be a football qb, and not too much exists outside of that for him, including ‘schoolin’.’

The tantrums he throws on the field when things don’t go his way, remind me of a 12 yr old. It’s a big reason I root for the Pats to lose because Brady loses his mind and it’s so entertaining to watch. I think he’s just stunted.

I think, despite being good looking (although he is turning into his courtroom sketch) , and richer than Gawd, he is just a big bore. Bridget got his most valuable asset (good genetic material) and was probably happy to bounce. I believe she knows she dodged a bullet.

      • greenmonster says:

“He’s like George W Bush but not as bright” must be one of the best insults ever! 🙂

      • Relli says:

        hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahaahhahaha…..

I very rarely LOL at anyone’s comment but that pretty much sums it up!

      • Monica says:

yeah, sure. that’s why she was acting like a bitch when she broke up with him, right? quit projecting, because you’re still the town loser

      • Dangles says:

        “Courtroom sketch. “😀

      • Nancy says:

Oh come on Monica, who wouldn’t be bitchy when their man leaves them with a fatherless child who was then scooped up by his new wife. I dislike football, and him even less. Maybe a cup of jo would give him just a touch of a personality and maybe an ounce of sensitivity. Sorry to his fans, but he’s just a whining football deflater to me. Oh but yes he’s so cute…..because that’s what really matters in life, right?

      • Carol says:

Um, that’s a pretty fantastic description of TB “he’s like George W. Bush but not as bright.” I’m going to use that one to describe my brother.

      • Wren says:

Psssst, intelligence and personality (or lack thereof) are heritable traits, so………………….

      • yes yes no says:

I’m a hardcore Patriots fan, but I believe this is a completely accurate description of Tom Brady. He is football-smart, I guess, but not real-world smart. His interviews are painful as hell, and he comes off as dumber than a box of hair in non-football situations.

      • negave says:

Nancy: You KNOW it’s NOT true. And we know you “love” Leonardo DiCaprio. That’s why you don’t like his wife. You don’t like Tom… I wonder why…

“he’s just a whining football deflater to me.” Deflater? Prove it!

  2. Belle Epoch says:

Seems like his diet would be dictated by his career not his wife’s ideas about mushrooms. Maybe he lives on Super Athlete It’s Not Really Steroids shakes.

    • FLORC says:

As long as he’s getting the proper nutrition and have the energy to keep going it shouldn’t be anything major.
I am very curious as to what he eats when on a break while training. Does he drink the gatorade with the general population? Or does he unpack a special lunch made by Giselle?
You can’t have a veggie smoothy or replacement meal and have that level of energy to burn for that length of time with that level of intensity. So, it’s curious.

      • Bridget says:

I think it’s interesting that everyone assume ‘ it’s Gisele that’s strict about the diet, when it could very well be Tom – he’s incredibly serious about doing anything he can to prolong his playing years

      • FLORC says:

I think it’s both. He wants to be as healthy as possible for his career and general health. Also, he listens to his wife and she has great influence over this.
I don’t think it’s him consulting independents that give information that possibly counter what his wife tells him and that is accepted and adopted by him.

  3. Snazzy says:

I’ve only ever had coffee once – hate it. Can’t even deal with the taste of it in ice cream or whatever. But I’m all about the teas – especially green teas. I wonder if his diet allows for tea? Or when he says ” or anything like that” he means nothing with caffeine?

    • SusanneToo says:

I had coffee once – at the Cafe du Monde in NO – never touched it since. Not drinking coffee is not some awesome feat. I do get plenty of caffeine though in my daily Dr. Peppers.

    • Birdix says:

I’m the same. For a while, living in Manhattan I felt like I was missing out on a part of the culture where everyone would go and get coffee (and/or smoke). in California, it’s all about the tea, matcha or kombucha, etc.

    • LadyMTL says:

I’m not a huge fan of coffee either, largely because it’s too bitter for me (I dislike bitter tastes). That said, I find mixing coffee and hot chocolate is divine! And I do have an occasional latté or cappuccino, but rarely.

Drinking just plain old dark coffee though…ick. Can’t stand it. I’m not even much of a tea drinker, I’ll have mint tea now and then but rarely anything else.

    • WTW says:

I’ve had coffee a few times as a child and as an adult. It makes me jittery and anxious, so I avoid it. I get a very small amount of caffeine from green tea. I mostly drink water and sometimes OJ or apple juice. That’s about it. Some people think I’m weird for not drinking coffee or soda. I have other vices and don’t feel the need to add more.

    • FLORC says:

I hated coffee 1st few times. Took to it when doing clinicals. The sugar was always gone in the break room and the creamer often soured. The coffee might have been burnt if not a cheap brand. Still, I needed the energy to not fall asleep standing upright.
So, I suffered and drank it black. Then a friend bought me wonderful quality coffee in regular and flavors! Delicious!. Does not need sugar or creamers, but i don’t mind those.

It’s really about the quality. Chocolate truffle Godiva was a christmas gift this year. It’s amazing.

Although, A down side… I tried to give up coffee. Switched to decaf… You do go through withdrawl. I was a crank. Back on full caff, but I don’t need it daily and sometimes don’t finish a tea cups worth. I think many people down the cup when you should sip it and let the caffeine slowly wake you up to avoid the shakes and sweats.

    • teacakes says:

      Green tea ice cream >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I don’t mind coffee, but my extended family are from coffee-growing land so I was seriously spoilt by good coffee every time I visited their homes (seriously, South Indian filter coffee is the actual best). After having that, I can’t settle for the crappy instant or even fancy coffeehouse stuff, so it’s a very rare thing for me, I’m more of a tea drinker.

And sadly, with age I find that coffee – the hot kind – has started to upset my stomach, so cutting down on even that is kind of compulsory now.

  4. Jusek says:

My mum is like that, she doesn’t drink either tea or coffee. She said she tried it when she was younger but she never developed a liking for them. She will try the odd hot chocolate once in a while. So it is normal, that’s all I’m adding.

    • Esmom says:

I had a boss who had never tried coffee either and his caffeinated beverage of choice was Diet Coke.

      • Jusek says:

Yes, my mum drinks diet Coke too. Me on the other hand, I drink tea and coffee but try to keep away from Coke or any soft drink.

      • Esmom says:

I’m a huge tea drinker, although I’ll have a cup of coffee occasionally if someone else is making it. I gave up soda years ago and recently I had a couple Diet Cokes at a party and I felt awful the next day. I really think it was the soda.

      • V4Real says:

It’s no big deal. My boyfriend is in his 30’s and he has never tried coffee. He’s a fan of hot chocolate.

      • Azurea says:

        Diet anything is poison, people!

    • Anne tommy says:

Tea for me too…but are this couple aware that there’s quite a lot of research out there that suggests coffee has positive health benefits? As in so many of these instances, the evidence is A bit contradictory, but it doesn’t support the idea that coffee is inevitably a bad thing…

  5. Serenitynow says:

    He sounds like a bimbo.
A lot of people think I am weird when I say that although I love the smell of coffee, I don’t like the taste.

    • Who ARE these people? says:

Either I’m weird too or we’re both not weird. Same for me. I want a “bacon and coffee” breakfast room spray … to make me hungry for my kefir and my amaranth porridge.

      • eileen says:

I’d buy a coffee scented candle if one was available but I didn’t care for it the few tines I’ve tried it. In nursing school and night shift I’d drink Mt Dew but now just diet coke or occasional hot chocolate from a coffee bar but mocha flavored treats are good.

  6. Jay says:

I hate coffee and tea as well. It tastes so gross to me. I’d love a caffeine boost in the morning, but on the bright side my teeth stay nice and white 🙂

  7. Skins says:

I think that there are only 2 things going through that small brain of his. Football, and Gisele

  8. Insomniac says:

Wow. I know tastes differ, but not only do I love coffee, I could not get through my day without it.

    • Locke Lamora says:

Me neither. I’m trying to keep it down at 2 cups per day, but it’s so hard. So very hard.

    • senna says:

I’m currently drinking some fancypants coffee that is so good, it doesn’t need milk or sugar. I’ve given up coffee for months-long stretches before just to see if I could do it, but life is so much nicer with it!

    • GreenieWeenie says:

a day? How do people get through LIFE without coffee? I’m horrified at the thought.

  9. Rux says:

I used to drink full FLEDGE Coca Cola — no Diet here all through college. Then when I moved into the corporate world, I moved on to coffee….the super double Starbucks coffee — the finance business never slows down so you gotta keep up. After I left the workplace to be a full time Mom, I gave up all that stuff. Not on purpose it honestly “just happened” My husband has his big cup in the morning and every now&again, I will take a couple of sips of his if I am backed up to get things going but that is the extent of my coffee relationship — so I can see him not trying/needing etc. But the other stuff regarding their diet, F$%#@#$%^% forget it; never going over there — however, did you notice they said nothing about banning Booze…..’raised eyebrow’. They just deflated that part — HHAHAHAHHAHA — I made a Cheezzzy joke.

  10. Denisemich says:

Why are we giving him Sh*t for eating healthy?

I just don’t understand it. Is it really better for a Professional Athlete to tell you he eats ice cream and burgers?
He is eating the way they suggest if you have been diagnossed with heart disease, cancer or had a transplant.

He is already at risk based on his profession for a whole host of medical maladies. Drama should be focused on how he cheated in the SuperBowl not his diet.

I wish I could be so focused

I thought Giselle drank Matcha which is very South American

    • Esmom says:

I know. I poked fun of his answers but I kinda get it. My son is a serious athlete and obsessed with good nutrition. If someone asked him what his favorite treat was, he would pause for an awkwardly long time, too. He did a little fun questionnaire at school for something, I can’t remember what, and under favorite food he put “almonds.” Even he knew “salmon” would be a really odd answer! 🙂

    • Lilacflowers says:

Cheated in the Super Bowl? That’s a new one.

      • denisemich says:

        Deflategate

      • Lilacflowers says:

Deflate gate was not the Super Bowl. And the NFL lost its case against him.

      • FLORC says:

        Spygate?

        Lilac
It’s not new. Anyone who knew of the patriots at this point does have some conscious association of Cheating-patriots-superbowl. The claims and association are not new.

      • EOA says:

No, they’re not new. But they are all pretty much ridiculous, and ways for teams (and their fans) that have lost over the past decade to feel better about themselves.

People erroneously believe that “Spygate” was about the Patriots filming the practice of another team. Instead, all it really included was the fact that the Patriots filmed signals, which had been previously not against the rules. He misinterpreted a new rule, and suddenly every victory the Patriots ever had was “cheating.” And @Lilacflowers has already pointed out the ridiculousness of the “Deflategate” charge.

I get that it is much easier to think of the Patriots as “cheaters” if your team never wins. But most of the evidence against them is flimsy, at best.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Spygate wasn’t the Super Bowl either. Every time a referee throws a yellow flag on the field, it is because somebody cheated. The Patriots actually tend to score rather low in that yellow flag cheating category. Some people think vaccines cause autism. Doesn’t make it true and whenever anyone makes incorrect assumptions and associations, be it about vaccines or cheating in the Super Bowl, they should be corrected.

      • FLORC says:

I meant the association was nothing new.

And just to restate. I think all cheat teams or athletes on some level. We only find out about it a decade+ post career end. More money more things go away. Less money. Less people care to pursue. But this isn’t about that. It’s about Tom not drining coffee. Which… is reasonable.

    • mp says:

But neither Tom Brady nor Giselle have had heart disease, an organ transplant or cancer (that we know of clearly). So why limit their diets (and their kids’ diets, more worryingly. What’s wrong with ice cream? it has the same composition as breast milk.)

Saturated fat does not cause heart disease or cancer. Google the Roseto effect. Those people (in the US) ate sugar, flour, lard, and drank aton. Yet, extremely low rates of heart disease. sometimes it’s not just about the food, although to hear Americans speak, you would think so.

      • denisemich says:

It’s kind of like waiting for a car crash to get brakes.

Scientists don’t actually know what causes anything absolutely. But they know what makes the body work harder.

We know that meat, beef, is as toxic as cigarettes to your body but the meat lobbying is too powerful. Remember what happened to Oprah and the WHO just published findings on this.

We know there is no reason for humans to drink animal milk and human breast milk need not be consumed once we begin adolescence.

What tastes good vs what a body needs are not the same.

      • FLORC says:

        denisemich
True! Although, to restrict everything? Studies do show when you give your body those sweets like icecream (in moderation of portion and time) your body will react similar to laughter. Endorphin/immune boost. And your brain doesn’t get addicted to needing ice cream to release more endorphins.

That little bit of something not 100% healthy is a good thing.

      • Monica says:

they don’t want to eat ice cream? just because you do doesn’t mean others have too, its called PERSONAL choice. no wonder america is obese, you think ice cream, sugar, and burgers are a legit necessity to survive, fyi its not

    • Redd says:

I think it’s because diet obsessive/orthorexic types are so damn annoying. His wife has Goop level food avoidance finger waving issues. Hey, I eat mah whole foods and love vegetables, but a burger or a donut occasionally isn’t going to send you to your death. I feel bad for their kids! Those restrictive types have the craziest rule breaking kids, it always backfires, every catholic school person I know is super fun.

      • Sd says:

Redd: Read the interview. His wife? No. HE doesn’t eat nightshades, mushrooms, etc. HE doesn’t drink coffee.

  11. mp says:

whut. Tom Brady is not mormon, but his snake oil salesman Guerrero is.
maybe that’s why? Haha the “absurdly long pause.” Brady’s brow furrows as he think to himself, “what do normal people eat….it’s been so long… must not sound elitist….OH! I know! Burgers and ice cream!”

  12. swak says:

Agree with the coffee thing. I like tea but while I love the smell of coffee, I don’t like the taste of it. “Brady has three children. And he doesn’t drink coffee? ” I don’t know who this writer is but just because you have 3 children doesn’t mean you drink coffee for the caffeine effect. I had 3 daughters and taught high school. So guess I should have it mainlining into my veins according to the writer.

    • Esmom says:

I’m pretty sure Kaiser was joking. I know I needed caffeine to keep up with my kids when they were young…I marvel at those who don’t need it!

    • Who ARE these people? says:

Yes, what is the correlation? It’s not like Brady is running after them all day, either. And he’s a professional athlete. He might just get his energy from, uh, being active?

      • Esmom says:

I just think everyone’s different, whether an athlete or not. I knew a professional cyclist who would carry a thermos of coffee in his water bottle holder on early morning rides. Super fit guy, who ate super healthy, but still needed his caffeine.

      • Bridget says:

Brady has also mentioned going to bed extremely early in season to get enough sleep at night. Normal people typically drink coffee because we stay up too late or get up too early.

  13. lilacflowers says:

I never drink coffee either. I do drink tea. My doctors want me off caffeine completely – it affects blood pressure.

Brady’s comments were made on a daily sports talk show that he calls in on weekly during the season. It is not a serious interview and it makes me laugh that people treat the things he says on that program like serious statements. Nothing said on the Dennis & Callahan show should be taken seriously. They’re two idiots but they have high ratings so the sports teams have to send them athletes.

  14. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

One of my absolute favorite things is my cup of coffee each morning. The smell, the taste, the ritual, the little zap of caffeine…I absolutely love it.

    • FLORC says:

      I love it too 🙂
Even camping FMORC and I bring instant coffee. Maybe some of my happiest camping memories look like folgers commercials of drinking black coffee by a misty lake.
And while the scenery is lovely! It wouldn’t be much without the coffee 😉

  15. paranormalgirl says:

I love coffee. I lived on it during my residency. I do love tea, also though. A nice cup of Barry’s on a cold morning….

  16. Size Does Matter says:

I’m pretty sure this morning I’ve already eaten everything on Tom’s do-not-eat list and it isn’t even 8:30 here.

  17. OSTONE says:

I drink coffee occasionally, I can go with or without it. My husband on the other side needs at least 2 cups a day to function.

  18. Sumodo1 says:

What does Tom Brady eat when he hangs out with Ben Afleck?

  19. Farhi says:

I can understand not eating unhealthy things, but not even trying it? That I don’t understand.
I know that Mormons also don’t drink tea or coffee, and I can’t understand it either.
It sure makes socializing with them more difficult.

    • Josephine says:

Don’t they just avoid caffeine? There are plenty of teas without caffeine. I can’t have caffeine (migraines) and believe me, it’s no problem to socialize, even at a coffee shop.

    • Sam says:

Mormons cannot consume caffeine or alcohol. They are free to consume decaf coffee or decaf teas. How in the world would that make it harder to socialize with somebody? Unless you’re talking about those people who feel like they need something to enjoy themselves.

      • Farhi says:

When you go out – it is a coffee run or at my house it is tea. I don’t know what else to do.
I didn’t realize they can do decaf because the ones I ran into they just said – they don’t drink coffee ( and people rarely drink tea in the US). It is awkward.

      • FLORC says:

In the States and Teavana is wonderful! There’s a blend… Golden Monkey and something else that tastes just like coffee.

Mormons i’ve known avoid coffee, but we had to have caffeeine free gingerale stocked if they stopped by.

At University I worked briefly at a coffee shop. It’s easy to socialize there with decaf tea, decaf coffee, or a smoothy.

      • Sam says:

Well, that’s because decaf coffee just really isn’t that good, so most people I know who avoid caffeine just don’t do coffee. But you’re the first person I’ve heard profess that people who avoid caffeine make stuff hard for you.

      • Farhi says:

“But you’re the first person I’ve heard profess that people who avoid caffeine make stuff hard for you. ”

Perhaps I am overthinking it but it comes from not wanting to offend, and not knowing enough.
For example, I wouldn’t dream of eating pork in front of Muslims, and most vegetarians also don’t like seeing other people eating meat but it is unavoidable.
People who don’t drink also don’t like seeing people drink (alcohol) but is usually also unavoidable etc.

I asked a person if he wanted to drink coffee, and he said – no and gave me a cold look. )) He was a Mormon. And I didn’t mean to offend. If I knew better I wouldn’t have asked and avoided that whole situation altogether.

      • Lilian says:

I’m Hindu, I don’t eat beef or pork for religious reasons and I don’t drink alcohol for personal reasons. I have never had any of these things. I have however fried bacon for kids I was taking care of. I also made steak and beef bologna (from a box, I don’t want to act like I’m a chef here). I have gone out with friends for years stayed out all night and they drank a lot and acted crazy ( some of the best nights of my life). None of these things have ever bothered of offended me. I can’t for the life of me see shy they should. Your choice of not eating and drinking something is personal to you, it doesn’t matter if someone else does it. With regards to things like bacon and steak, you don’t miss what you do t know (I often get asked about not eating bacon, people are shocked). Maybe it’s your perceptions that people might be offended?

    • Francesca says:

      Mormons are such buzzkills.

    • Lilacflowers says:

I never drink coffee. Currently, because of some serious health issues. I’m not supposed to have alcohol, caffeinated beverages of any kind (bye, hot chocolate, Coke, and many teas), or sugary soft drinks. But it doesn’t cut into my social life at all. There are plenty of non-caffeinated options and my friends can drink what they want. How is your fun affected by someone else’s beverage choice.

      • FLORC says:

Hope your medical issues are under control!
And agree. If it’s about fun with friends Rather than, let’s say, activities happening for the primary purpose of drinking alcohol you can have fun.

  20. MAC says:

    This makes headlines………

  21. Lizzie says:

My read of the interview is that he doesn’t have a cheat food, but he doesn’t want to say so because he knows it will seem off putting to the listeners of the show, not because he’s scared Gisele will hear. After all, he says he’s never had coffee, and that includes the time before he met Gisele. He’s a professional athlete and clearly a very driven and focused individual, and diet is important in performing at a high level athletically, so I would think he’s behind the strict diet as much as she is.

  22. Longhairdontcare says:

Im pretty positive Gisele used to rave about green tea and how she drank it everyday. I wonder if it was decaf or not.

  23. Betti says:

I don’t drink soda but will have the odd root beer now and again, thou thankfully not a lot of places in the London sell it. I have one cup of coffee a day and drink water or black tea (sometimes with mint leaves in it) the rest of the day.

  24. Crumpet says:

Coffee is so good for you. They keep finding out more and more just how much. But if people don’t like it, I don’t have an opinion. Except there are certainly other ways to get caffeine than to drink coffee.

    • Sam says:

My doctor has always said that straight black coffee is good for you. The problem is that very few people actually drink it that way. By the time most of us load it up with milk and sugar, it’s not a nutritionally net gain anymore. I tried it straight black and figured out why it’s so hard to drink it that.

  25. erika1985 says:

The standard American diet is full of sugar, processed food and fat. Nothing wrong with keeping a clean diet. Not everyone feels deprived if he can’t have pizza, cheetoes, ice cream and coffee. I personally like coffee, but other than that my daily eating is similar to Brady’s and the food tastes great! To each his own.

  26. blueb says:

This guy is such a weeb…

  27. Catelina says:

I don’t drink coffee either, team tea all the way

    • Wentworth Miller says:

      I’ve never had coffee. I’m a tea drinker. -10 ° weather. I drink tea. 100° weather. I drink tea.
I’ve tried a lot of “nasty” shit. Food wise. Coffee never interested me.

  28. barca4ever says:

Ahh coffee. I miss it. Developed a strong aversion now that I’m pregnant. Even the thought of it makes me want to toss. In another note, i would bet that he rarely cheats …on his diet that is.

    • Wentworth Miller says:

      Congrats, on baby sweets!

    • Bridget says:

Me too, during both pregnancies. It smelled so bad that I’d make my husband put his morning coffee in a travel mug and go sit in the den (the farthest room away from me possible) to drink it, and even then I could still smell it. I didn’t start drinking it again for many months after having both kids.

  29. Luca76 says:

I love coffee , especially the smell of it. It was definitely an acquired taste for me though. I started drinking it out of necessity because I worked really early and didn’t sleep much in my 20s. Now I do my best to go coffee free at least one day a week so I’m not too dependent on it. I also love tea but the caffeinated teas affect me more than coffee.
I side eye anyone who never tried xy or z because it shows a lack of curiosity and a general blandness. I also think you should try things you don’t like more than once just because you’re taste might change over years. But that’s not a judgement just some general life advice because there are so many different kinds of tastes and experiences out there.

  30. thaisajs says:

He never has a cheat day. Because he’s too boring to even consider it. Gah, these people sound so tremendously un-fun.

  31. Sam says:

I’ve had coffee, but I haven’t had it in about 5 years. For me, it was like a once and a while treat thing. I always sort of thought it was weird when people would claim that they actually need it to function. Isn’t that a sign that you’re exhausted and probably need more sleep? It was just never my thing. Now I never do it. Maybe it’s age, but caffeine now gives me a weird feeling in my limbs and it certainly speeds up my heart in a way I don’t like. Which basically means now I’m on the Sprite train every day.

    • Cee says:

I don’t get it either! I tried to drink coffee while at secondary school and then at uni, but it never worked? I don’t know if it has a placebo effect on some people, but it just made me YUK all the time. If I need an energy boost I drink mate instead.

  32. Paris says:

This guy is so dumb. End of story.

  33. Cee says:

I don’t like coffee either, unless it’s austrian, so… what? What’s the point of all of this?

  34. FingerBinger says:

I didn’t get memo. Why the sudden interest in what Tom Brady eats and drinks?

  35. Jaded says:

The two of them sound utterly insufferable. Giselle sounds like a food terrorist and he sounds like a dumb ox. I can understand that a top athlete would want to avoid nightshade foods that might trigger inflammation, but not allowing their kids to eat somewhat normally, i.e. a couple of oatmeal-raisin cookies once in a while, is just too Goopy for words.

Now I want a mushroom-cheese omelet for brunch. And toast dripping with butter….washed down with a cup of fresh ground coffee from my French Press.

  36. T. Fanty Fan says:

Deathwish Coffee. Double the caffeine. Only need one cup a day.

  37. teacakes says:

ho hum, so apparently the only reason an adult athlete would stick to a very strict diet that excludes things some of us like, is because his uptight bitch supermodel wife (what she is, according to some of you) makes him.

  38. Anna says:

This diet sounds like no fun. But she is a top model and he’s a top athlete, they are both in their 30s and have a limited professional life span, because they will soon age out of their careers. This is what it takes. I am glad that they are honest about it rather than pretending to “eat everything, only in moderation!” or “eat burgers and just do lots of yoga!”
Also, can we please stop with the Gisele made him do it storyline? The first article specifically says that he doesn’t eat nightshades, suggesting that he restricts his diet more than she restricts hers. I find her insufferable and obnoxious, but casting him as some poor dude caught in her iron clutches just screams of sexism. Like no man would ever live like this if some woman didn’t make him.

    • Bridget says:

It’s like when people say that Chris Martin must have celebrated his split with Goop with a burger. Dude’s a vegetarian.

      • kate says:

Martin is actually the one who got Goop into a lot of the diet’s she talks about. I think he’s more lax now, but for most of their marriage his eating was way, way more restricted than hers.

    • OhDear says:

+1 to all of this. Both their jobs involve keeping their bodies in a certain condition. Of course it’s no fun, it takes discipline to perform and stay at their level.

    • Monica says:

THANK YOU. these comments are so annoying. some people don’t like junk food, some people don’t want to feed their children junk food, just because it fills you every day ending in y doesn’t mean everyone else should. and SUGAR is BAD for you, no matter what these idiots say.

    • Amy says:

^^^what Anna said! I also would like to add that im a former long time coffee drinker, once I quit, my headaches went away, I also sleep better and am less irritable and am less agitated generally speaking… Now I look around and see that the majority of people are over caffeinated, stressed out, and bitchy complaining about insomnia. I get it, I was there for years too… It’s a vicious cycle. I still love the smell and taste of coffee, but I am better off without it.

  39. Kate says:

I’ve never had coffee either. Hate the smell. Go Chiefs! That is all.

  40. arabella says:

    He is mildly ‘special’, right?

    • EOA says:

Yes, he is. He’s a graduate of the University of Michigan, has four Super Bowl rings, 3 Super Bowl MVPs, 2 league MVPs, named 11 times to the Pro-Bowl, and 3 times All-Pro.

Oh, you mean, “special” in the way that demeans people with intellectual disabilities, don’t you?

Brady isn’t even my favorite Patriots player, but the hatred of every little thing he does is too much.

  41. EOA says:

I’m no huge Gisele Bundchen fan but I don’t know why anyone would assume she’s just leading him by the nose when it comes to this diet. Brady’s discipline is pretty legendary, and if I had to guess, he was the driver on creating this diet.

  42. Bridget says:

I am extremely active, and understand a lot of these restrictions – while I’m training hard, foods that don’t normally bother my system when I’m not putting it under a lot of stress can just rip up my gut. Dairy and gluten especially. So I get it.

Also, it doesn’t shock me that Brady isn’t much of a coffee drinker. He’s said before that he tries to get something like 11 hours of sleep at night.

  43. Dangles says:

I come from a long line of caffeine addicts. I’m working hard to dissuade my kids from taking it up.

  44. NeNe says:

He’s so smug! I just cannot stand the dude!

  45. KaleIt says:

I read one of his interviews once and it reminded me of any David Beckham interview. These guys have little going on upstairs and we pay them 100,000 times more than we do someone like Paul Krugman or other public intellectuals. And do they do for earning tens of millions? They dribble/kick/toss balls around a field with other grown adults all day long. Sometimes they’ll even pose in designer underwear for our viewing pleasure. Not.

  46. kate says:

I tried coffee once. Didn’t care for the taste. I’m sure if I’d persevered I’d have ended up liking it, and relying on it, but why do that to yourself. Everyone I know who drinks coffee daily is barely human if they can’t get their fix. Seems like a good thing to avoid getting hooked on, same as not getting into the habit of eating something sugary in the late afternoon to keep you going.

I’ll have an iced mocha every now and then if drinks options are limited, and I don’t mind coffee icecream, but I’ve only ever had real coffee once.
