Director claims Lindsay Lohan improvised during Funny or Die Video

The director of Lindsay Lohan’s hysterical “Funny or Die” video is either trying to get in her pants or for some reason give her good press. Because he’s clearly lying for her. Director Eric Appel claims Lindsay came up with several of the ideas for the video. In fact, the skit itself was her idea – Last Wednesday she got in touch with the “Funny or Die” people and said she wanted to do something to poke fun at the disastrous end of her relationship.

Lindsay Lohan is in on the joke. She took to her MySpace celebrity blog to tell fans why she did the Funny or Die video. “I just think it’s better to take something negative and turn it into something good… laughter is the BEST medicine,” she wrote Tuesday.

The video’s director, Eric Appel also tells Usmagazine.com that it was done in good fun. “She wanted to do a Funny or Die video with all the stuff that everyone’s saying,” Appel tells Us. “She wanted to respond to it in a funny way, show that she gets it.” Lohan reached out to Will Ferrell’s manager Wednesday about shooting a spoof. By Thursday, the team was pitching her ideas. On Friday, they had a script written. They filmed the one-and-a-half-minute clip in under two hours on Saturday.

“She came up with the stuff about being a threat to all security guards — she improvised while doing it,” he says. “She threw in a bunch of fun, funny stuff.” As for the line that she was looking for somebody to spend the rest of her life with — or at least the rest of her probation? “She laughed,” Appel says, “She thought it was a funny line.”

The actress also holds up a cover of Us Weekly, which Appel says, “was a last minute thing. We all came up with the idea collectively and sent someone to the store to buy one. It was her idea to say, ‘I’m so alone’ directly into the camera.”

The actress — who brought a few friends, her sister and her mom — was “really a blast to work with,” Appel says. “She came in, did her thing, was really professional,” Appel says. “People forget Lindsay Lohan’s, like, a good actress. There’s so much attention [to everything she does], but…you forget this girl has really good comic timing.”

[From Us Weekly]

Not to be overly-critical, but the line about being a threat to security guards was one of the only un-funny ones in the video. I thought it just fell flat, especially in comparison to the rest of the script. It wasn’t awful or anything, but it’s not like Lohan came up with the best part.

That said, Appel is right – there is so much drama surrounding Lohan (mostly of her own making) that you completely forget she’s an actress. And a decent one. I’m not saying she’s the greatest of her generation or any of the other crap her parents are always spewing about her talent. But she is good. I don’t even think of her as an actress anymore – more as a professional shopper/dramatic relationship haver. If she would focus on toning down the drama and working hard, she could still have a good career. Or at least make more promo videos for eHarmony.

Its still not going to save her career…

  2. waaaahh says:

she is still pathetic. she looks terrible all orangy and emaciated.
but i must admit it was pretty humorous.

  3. nikky says:

am i the only one who didn’t think it was funny at all? And i thought her acting was terrible, it was so amateur, like my grade 8 drama “performances”. The only thing it reminded me about her acting is that its really bad……i honestly don’t get why everyone is raving about this.

  4. Ash says:

“more as a professional shopper/dramatic relationship haver”..that made me giggle.

  5. bella says:

    i found it amusing

  6. yae says:

I think the skit was very clever. I laughed. She made her mark with that piece and made me laugh. Hat’s off

  7. Because I Say So says:

It’s not funny at all. Ironic comedy only works if it’s NOT TRUE! It just showed how much of a mess she is and highlighted her very public fail. And her poking fun at the interview cover that she gave herself ONLY A WEEK before? Make up your mind: you are either the victim of nasty paparrazzi or you are just a fame whore. Can’t have it both ways.

  8. Ria says:

I think it may have been more as a therapeutic gig than “I can act” one. Maybe to confront her own demons. And maybe to snark at Sam a lil.

  9. Texas Gal says:

I totally believe it was her idea & she had input which explains why it wasn’t funny. In certain scenes I wanted to smile at best but the combination of her voice & past made it blah for me.

  10. lola says:

I still can’t beleive this bitch is 22. she looks and acts like a desperate skanky middle age woman.

  11. Jenny says:

im just tryin’ STOP to care about lohan’s stuff!
can WE ALL do that ?

  12. kai says:

I didn’t think it was all that funny either. She looked like sh*t. Agree with #7

  13. ima says:

I agree, Nikky. I never understood why people always talk about what a great actress she is…hello? Mean Girls is over five years old! Also, if she improvised so much, why did she need to read so many cue cards?

  14. the original kate says:

sooooooo not funny. and also? can girlfriend please take a damn bath?

  15. LondonParis says:

ima: that’s what i keep asking! she was quite obviously reading cue cards.

  16. kelly says:

    shes amazing i love her

  17. Zoe (The Other One) says:

Epic FAIL – not funny cos it’s all true. This raggedy ass wh0re needs a good long bath and a stint in therapy.

  18. Tori says:

Loved it! Kudos to her for being able to poke fun at herself and look great doing it…

  19. JaundiceMachine says:

So wait . . . does “improvise” mean reading directly off the cue card verbatim?
    No wonder I didn’t letter in Improv . . .

  20. Ned says:

To be honest, it’s not really important if you’re good in improvising.

You need to do your job, be good at your craft and leave the writing to the people that it’s their craft.

The video was a good PR move, although it reminded me that her skin is not good for the big screen.

Her problems are bigger than just her not being so talented.
She is not pretty, has a problematic skin and doesn’t have an audience.

You can be lacking in talent, but beautiful or have this huge charisma for some parts.
If you got none of these things, you weren’t really meant to be in front of a camera.

  21. Kashew_Nutz says:

she is a pretty girl. stop hating people because of what they do with their own lives people. honesty is therapy. speak it!

  22. Blondie says:

She used to be pretty, the drug abuse and drink has aged her considerably. She looks hagard and old. She has lost her shine and freshness.

Lindsay should be held as an example to kids today to show what drug abuse can do to a person and their talents. It destroys them.

  23. flo says:

i found the sketch funny. she can poke fun at herself – good for her… and good luck to her!

  24. Nneikha says:

at least she is admitting her mistakes!!good way to make a comeback lohan!!

  25. Nick says:

Yeah I saw that video lol I think she did an awesome job! That’s the best way to get out of this “slump”!

  26. sissoucat says:

Ned: could you just name someone that’s pretty enough for you, once ? I’d love to know.
