‘Captain America: Civil War’ trailer features more death, Bucky & Spider-Man

cap1

I don’t really care about Marvel characters, sorry not sorry. I pay attention to Marvel stuff because it’s my job, but I honestly cannot wait for the current superhero-movement to die out or fail in some way. At some point, we’re going to reach Peak Superhero and then interest will decline and people will just stop caring, right? Probably not, but a girl can dream. For now, we’re living in an Age of Marvel. While Warner Bros. handed the keys to the DC Comics kingdom to Zack Snyder and the Batfleck, Marvel is actually run by smooth, competent operators who plan sh-t out like a decade in advance. And they’ve got a lot of money, talent and dreams pinned on Captain America: Civil War.

The first trailer for Civil War debuted during the Super Bowl, but that was just a teaser. Marvel dropped a full-length trailer on Thursday, and we’re getting to see MOAR Black Panther, MOAR Black Widow, MOAR Iron Man and a little touch of Spiderman, who is on Team Iron Man in the Civil War. What’s surprising is that I would have expected Marvel to show off more Sebastian Stan – Stan’s Bucky/Winter Soldier is a fan-favorite, and Stan is a critical darling too. I suspect Marvel is saving the most amazing Winter Soldier stuff for another trailer, or perhaps just for the film. Here’s the new trailer:

The biggest surprise is that Marvel didn’t find a way to write out Iron Man on this one, just because you know it causes them so much deep, physical pain to give Robert Downey Jr. all that money. RDJ was a particularly shrewd negotiator back when Marvel was figuring out his contract for The Avengers, and he reportedly took home $50 million for The Avengers and $75 million for Iron Man 3. As for RDJ’s participation in Civil War? Marvel is giving him $40 million PLUS a backend. But RDJ is there, almost getting shot in the face by Bucky. That’s a great moment in the trailer. What else? I love the general look of Black Panther, and I hope we get to see more of his face. And I guess no one minds that the trailer basically gives away the death of War Machine? Gee, I hope that happens in the first act.

Other notable stuff… this is Spiderman’s first outing with anything Avengers related, and he’s on Iron Man’s side. Huh. Martin Freeman is also in the film as Everett Ross and Daniel Bruhl comes in as Baron Zemo. There were widespread reports that Gwyneth Paltrow was going to do a cameo as Pepper Potts again, but now people are saying she was cut out of the film.

I don’t care but I don’t care less than for BatmanVsSuperman

  2. Prairiegirl says:

SQUEEEEEEEEE! Going to be SO different from the comic series.

    Can. Not. Wait.

Oh man oh man oh man I cannot wait!!!!! Gaahhh!!!!!!

    • vauvert says:

me too, me too! Tony is wayyyy too smug.

    • Snazzy says:

Me too, but I do love the way he called Spiderman Underoos and how Spiderman actually sounds like the teen he is supposed to be 🙂

      • Robin says:

Snazzy, me too! I love Stark’s snarky humor. Looking forward to seeing this in IMAX 3-D, I love the Marvel movies. They have some clever moments and it’s mostly just fun to watch them.

    • Abbess Tansy says:

Team Cap and Team Bucky. Sebastian Stan is so hot to me.

  5. Mia4s says:

Are they actually going to have something important happen in this one?

Spiderman needs a lot more FX work but I think he looks pretty good. Nice that they got an actual teen this time and not a 30 year old. I imagine Tony helps him with his suit? Go for the surrogate father/son humanizing relationship? Cliche but clever move.

    Black Panther does look great.

    • Naya says:

I have a feeling Steve Rogers either dies in this one or is gravely injured making way for Bucky to take the Cap shield. I mean look at the guys Tony has lined up on his side, how can Steve possibly win against that?

Also I dont get Sebastians appeal. At All. He is so dry of charisma his interviews are painful to watch especially when Mackie or Chris arent there to save it.

      • Jojo says:

I totally get what you’re saying about the interviews… He certainly doesn’t come off as very intelligent. That said, I think he’s gorgeous, especially as Winter Soldier. So, I’m always torn because ,while I find him reconciliation good looking, the lack of intelligence and charisma is so off putting.

    • lilacflowers says:

In the last quarter of the movie, something huge will fall from the sky

      • Snazzy says:

and there is a very likely possibility that an entire city will be destroyed

      • lilacflowers says:

New York. London. Washington DC. Some small town in New Mexico. A made-up eastern European country. Whose turn is it now?

    • Abbess Tansy says:

      More deaths I think.

  6. Miss V says:

This movie looks incredible. Black Panther looks crazy good. Even the Scarlett Witch looks kind of badass. I thought she was horrendous in AOU. That whole movie sucked, actually. This one should make up for it, though. Take my money now! #TeamCap

    • Naya says:

I hope they ramp her up. I’ve been hearing that she is insanely powerful in the comics, like possibly the only one who could take on Hulk or Thor and win. Its criminal that she doesnt have a stand alone film if what I have been reading about her is true.

      • Lurker says:

To me, a big part of Scarlet Witch’s problem is that the never nailed her personality in the comics. She was crazy powerful, but not very specific. Steve, Tony, Thor etc, they all have such singular personalities.

Also, I thought Olsen was pretty woejous in Age of Ultron, so there’s that.

      • Marty says:

It really seems like they have difficulty with writing well for their female characters. This was one of my biggest pet peeves in the first X-Men franchise. They turned Rogue, one of my favorite characters, into a weak and whiney baby. She was so powerful in the comics and had such a complex storyline.

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

Right? In Age of Ultron it felt just all rushed over the storyline of Scarlett Witch/Quicksilver, so I really didn’t care for them. But now in this trailer she’s looking badass! This movie is looking really good & I heard this might be last or last to last trailer out, avoiding the BatmanVsSuperman 365 teasers route. I’m going to buy my tickets ASAP #teamBlackPanther

    • CornyBlue says:

Scarlett Witch is my favorite comic character and my ass is on fire thinking they might show her entire power set.

  7. InvaderTak says:

I just gotta say it: I hate Spiderman. They’ve beat him into the ground already, I didn’t like any of the previous adaptations, so I’m not hopeful. Why not being in a lesser known and change it up a bit? Oy. The rest of it had better be good otherwise I’ll skip it. Why did they put him in Cap’s movie anyway? Why not an Avengers one? They already had a problem in AoU with too many super heroes, so why even bring in another huge name? He better not get more screen time than BP. BP looks awesome.

    • Jess says:

Totally agree! We don’t need Spiderman in this and if he takes time away from Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, and/or the Black Panther, that totally sucks. We have enough white dudes – let’s give some love to the other awesome characters in the Marvel universe. And, by the way, still think Superhero Face Punch looks beyond awful.

  8. grabbyhands says:

Team Cap. If Iron Man finally bit it for good, I wouldn’t miss him at all.

I totally get why people would be over the whole superhero thing, but I can’t hate on it, The movies have been a great Saturday afternoon escape the last few years at times in my life when I sorely needed it. But I do agree that the studios need to quit relying solely on this genre (and crappy remakes and adaptations that no one is asking for) and actually start utilizing the talented writers and directors that are probably hanging out with really good material waiting for a chance to bring it to the screen.

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

I am over Superheroes/blockbuster movies because it is not art or even entertaining,it is just money making .
for example,BvS ‘s budget costs $350 million (without the promotion) ,it is insane

      • myopicmirror says:

“Not art or entertainment” what? I won’t argue what is or isn’t art, but clearly people find them entertaining or they wouldn’t routinely top the box office every year. If you don’t like the genre, that’s ok, no one is forcing you to watch them, but it’s not as if marvel studios is going to stop making comic book movies and start making the type of films you want to see.

The budgets are huge, but these films employ thousands of people. Deadpool, for example, employed over 13,000 people worldwide and that was a smaller movie then both BvS and Civil War.

    • CornyBlue says:

But Marvel does use very very good directors. Their choice of directors are very unique and it works wonderfully for them

      • grabbyhands says:

I mean good directors who aren’t doing superhero movies for Marvel (or any other studio). Like I said above, I’m a superhero fan, but I still see that there is a need for non-superhero movies.

    • Algernon says:

Studios will stop making superhero movies when people stop going to see them.

  9. NUTBALLS says:

I will not be crying if Superhero movies go away for while, but I am looking forward to this one. We’ll be there at the first showing. The Russos and screenwriters did such a good job with the last Cap film that I’m optimistic this one won’t be the mess that Ultron was.

    #TeamCap

  10. Diana B says:

Team Iron Man all. The. Way. I actually gasped when I saw Spidey. This is going to be so awesome!

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

Yess! I’m very excited for this one that I completely forgot about BatfleckVsWonderBread & X-men. I’m choosing my movies very carefully since a lot of them are coming out this year, so my superhero ballot can only have two maybe three. I went to see Deadpool, plan to go see Civil War because it looks awesome &I have one more left definitely skipping Batfleck so it’s either X-men or Suicide Squad.

Marvel is definitely ahead in their marketing department, they know what they’re doing. Overall the Marvel team takes it all, DC had it with Nolan’s Batman but I don’t have much faith for Snyder & I have no idea what’s going on with X-men (the last movie was ok? I guess)

      • Diana B says:

I’m excited for all of those except that Batfleck mess. I’ll be watching them all, because no, I’m not over the super hero genre.

  11. Lisa says:

Don’t understand why Spidey’s with Tony – what about his family?

Think film will have mucho winter soldier, thankfully.

I think War Machine might be a fake out – would they really kill one of the few black cast members? Is this a walking dead quota thing – we got a new black cast member let’s kill the old one? hopefully it is.

Also wanted to make the point Downey didn’t negotiate his deal – his agents did.

    • CornyBlue says:

Spidey starts out as Team Iron Man and then changes sides in the comics. He forms the emotional backbone of civil war. But I dunno how much he is in this

    • Nicole says:

Yea Spiderman switches teams eventually. And RDJ was specifically asked to be in this movie. He wasn’t going to do it but basically picked the Civil War story and they ran with it. At this point he picks and chooses what he wants to do. I believe he only wanted to do the Avengers before leaving Iron Man behind

      Oh and Team Iron Man

      • Algernon says:

The president of Marvel studios has said several times they always planned on doing Civil War at this point in their storyline, and that they were even prepared to do it *without* RDJ when the CEO of Marvel initially refused to pay his salary for the movie. RDJ did not pick this story. He doesn’t have *that* much pull. They did make the part bigger once they got him signed on, and RDJ does contribute a lot at story meetings, but they were always going to make Civil War, with or without him.

  12. Red32 says:

    Well that was awesome.

  13. MexicanMonkey says:

I don’t begrudge Downey Jr the money he made for the Avengers and Iron Man movies to be honest. The movies brought in a ton of money and he deserved what he got because the MCU was basically riding on the shoulders of the Iron Man movies and their success.

Captain America didn’t really become a popular character and a fan favorite until the Russo brothers got their hands on him and gave us the winter solider.

I do love superhero movies so I don’t wish for them to go away. Even if not every movie delivers, it’s a genre, some movies are good and some are bad. We can’t stop making romantic movies because of a bad Nicolas sparks adaptation, can we?

And I really don’t buy the whole there are too many movies and the superhero saturation argument. This year were getting six movies spread out across the whole year!

    • Snazzy says:

I love them too. They make me happy 🙂

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

+100000000 I love superhero movies & I’ll take them over any Nicholas Sparks or Valentine’s day/ NYE/ Mother’s day crap they keep making. They’ve had a few misses with their movies (Iron Man 2 I’m looking at you) but they’ve made some really great ones too (IM, Captain America Winter Soldier, GOTG, The Avengers) plus I want a Black Panther movie & watch GOTG2.

They make good movies. have great directors & casting choices. So they can keep making movies & I’ll keep throwing my money to them.

    • jammypants says:

YES! It’s a genre like anything else. It’s not a fad. It’s here to stay. There are millions of comics lovers. This won’t ever die. I know adults, teens, children of all ages and backgrounds who love comics.

  14. jesb says:

That trailer made me feel the feels. Now I’m actually looking forward to civil war.

  15. Eve says:

    Looks AWESOME!!!!

And, to my surprise, I think I’m #TeamIronMan.

    P.S.: Black Panther looks amazing.

P.P.S.: For those who complain about comic book based movies…well, I LOATHE romantic comedies. You know what I do? I don’t watch them.

    • antipodean says:

Hiya, Eve, great to see you, hope you are keeping well. Has there been any sign of your missing puddy tat? Don’t want to bring any sad feelings back, but I have been hoping that he/she might have turned up.
You are quite right about any movie that is not one’s cup of tea, just vote with the feet, or the on/off button! Simple.

      • Eve says:

        No…no sign.

        😢

I know you didn’t mean any harm but
I can’ t even look at her (Bruna is a girl) pictures let alone talking about her. I’ve been crying every single day since I was told she was gone.

        I’ve lost all hope.

      • antipodean says:

So sorry to hear that Eve, lots of good thoughts heading your way. Your wonderful attitude is an inspiration to me, keep on keeping on, as they say.

      • Eve says:

        Thank you, dear.

:* (right now it tastes like tears). Sorry.

  16. Incognito says:

I saw the trailer yesterday and immediately thought “I need to go to a midnight showing!” Which is way past my bedtime. (Hey! I can still be a rockstar and go to sleep at 11:35!)

I really enjoy the Marvel movies, although AOU left something to be desired. I felt the writing was weak in that one and that it was a transitional movie setting up Civil War. I never had high expectations for the Captain America movies but I have to say they have always been way better than I thought they would be, especially the Winter Soldier. The Russo brothers really impressed me with their writing and cinematic style and they are doing this and the next Avengers movie, so I’m expecting great things.

    • lilacflowers says:

Some theaters actually do an 8 PM showing on the Thursday before the Friday “opening.” They don’t advertise them but if you check your theaters listings, they’ll have it posted. But you’ll usually need to buy your tickets about a week ahead of time.

  17. CornyBlue says:

Marvel owns my ass as always.

    • Izzy says:

Right?? And #TeamCap 4evah, because Dat Cap Ass. I really am that shallow, and I’ll own it.

    • Wood Dragon says:

I’m looking forward to this, but I’m bracing myself by taking a packet of kleenex with me! They better not kill off Rogers, or Rhodey – I’ve always liked that character and I like Cheedle.

  18. H says:

I admit it, I cried when I saw Spidey at the end and I’m not even a Spiderman fan! I’m all over the Steve/Bucky feels, plus I think the Black Panther fight with Winter Soldier will be epic.

    Heads up. Possible *spoilers.*

Spidey CHANGES sides in the comics. He winds up on Captain America’s side when he realizes Stark is a jerk. Sorry, Stark fans.

    I’m #TeamCap myself.

  19. Alex says:

Write out Iron Man? MCU asked RDJ to be in the new CA movie and the only reason he did it is because HE picked the Civil War storyline. Otherwise he wouldn’t be in the movie. RDJ is trying to phase himself out (hence the lack of solo movies) eventually. Lets not forget who got the MCU going…RDJ.
Anyways I’m excited for the movie because I love the Civil War storyline and I love that we see Black Panther (finally!) the only thing I wish was that the Hulk was in it.
I’m over SpiderMan and the constant reboots but Zendaya was just cast in the solo movie so I may have to watch it.

    • Algernon says:

He did not pick the Civil War storyline. They asked him to be in Civil War, and he chose to do that rather than make Iron Man 4. Which is a smart move, because he’s going to make a ton of money doing half the work.

    • Marty says:

He didn’t get the MCU going. The Blade franchise did.

      • jammypants says:

eh, credit where it’s due. It was Kevin Feige.

      • V4Real says:

What she meant by that is that the future of the rest of the Marvel movies hinged on Iron man doing well. Joss and Kevin said so themselves. If IM had failed they probably wouldn’t have continued making Thor, Cap and so on.

  20. unmade_bed says:

    “Bring out the gimp.”

  21. xpresson says:

Will a kind soul who is into these super heroes stories give me a summary of what is going on here? Who is in the right? Captain America or Iron Man? Thank you 😉

    • Marianne says:

Basically the government wants to pass a law where superheroes have to register. Their names, their powers etc. They feel superheroes have become too dangerous. Iron Man’s side is for it. Cap’s side is against it.

  22. Irene says:

This is actually the third trailer. There was one before the Super Bowl spot that featured Bucky heavily.

  23. FrenchGirlChi says:

I cannot wait!!! I am more excited about this movie coming out then batman vs superman…

Love me some Tony Stark, the entrance for Spidey ha! Epic

Ok I just went into Kid Mode about this movie… LOL

  24. Marianne says:

If you dont like comic book movies, thats fine. Don’t watch them. But you don’t need to wish for them to go away. Obviously lots of people like them. I mean, I dont like heavy metal music but that doesnt mean Im advocating for them to go away permanently. I know they have a place in our society and that people out there do like it.

That being said, Im pretty pumped for Civil War. Marvel has some stumbles (Thor 2 and Avengers 2 comes to mind) but they usually make pretty great films. The Russo Brothers did a very good job with Winter Soldier, so Im glad to see them come back and tackle this one. Im also surprised that they did show us Spiderman. I figured that would be something they would want to hold off on. But hey, I was really happy to see him, and I think its so cool that we’re finally getting a Spiderman with expressive eyes. Also I doubt Rhodes dies. or if he does, I doubt its done like that. They wouldnt show that so clearly in the trailer. It could be a scarlet witch vision, or its another Marvel fakeout death scene.
