Ciara shows off her 16-carat engagement ring in Vegas: gorgeous or meh?

As we learned two weeks ago, Ciara and Russell Wilson are engaged after about a year of dating. Ciara and Russell’s relationship has always been surprisingly public – they were walking red carpets together after only dating for a few months, and even more than that, they have both publicly discussed the fact that they aren’t having sex. They are waiting until marriage… or maybe this engagement, I don’t know. I suspect they’re waiting for marriage. But surely the engagement gets them to second base?

Anyway, Russell proposed to Ciara while they were on vacation overseas, but now they’re back in the states, and Ciara had a gig this weekend in Las Vegas. This was her first public appearance since the engagement. She performed at the Marquee, and rather adorably, she made sure that all of the photographers got some good shots of her engagement ring. Apparently, it’s a 16-carat flawless diamond. From Us Weekly:

“An engagement ring is purely a token of love and unity between a couple. The love and emotion behind the gift is the true value, not what is a calculated market value or another opinion,” an insider tells Us Weekly. “Having said that, this ring is virtually flawless and it is a custom piece made by the top jeweler in the world. A ring’s market value is determined by a variety of factors including color, clarity and shape. The color and clarity of this custom piece is extraordinary.”

“But the true value of a ring to anyone is what it means now, at this moment. A ring or any piece of jewelry is worthless without meaning behind it. From what I can see, this ring’s market value and emotional value behind it is priceless,” the insider continues. “Every stone has its own beauty based on its nature. This flawless and perfect 16-carat diamond is truly one of a kind.”

[From Us Weekly]

I really love looking at photos of engagement rings and really any kind of jewelry, and this ring is… alright. On a scale of Jennifer Aniston’s cloudy, quartz-like “diamond” (on the low end) to Mariah Carey’s crazy-perfect diamond, this one seems to be sort of in the middle for me. I actually like the setting a lot, but I’m not crazy about the old-school feel of the cut of the central diamond. Still, it’s pretty and I bet Russell paid a fortune for it.

It’s too big and gaudy looking. Bigger is not always better.

    • Carol says:

I may sound like a dope, but I never got the whole big diamond engagement ring thing. It just always seems like you are showing off your monetary status instead of your “love.”

    • missmerry says:

      amen.

I sometimes feel that the bigger it is, the more fake it looks.

my cousin has a gorgeous! diamond that shines in pinks and yellows, not sure where she got it, but the thing is MASSIVE. it has no stones on the side, just a simple tiffany setting…but it’s so big and rolls around on her finger so much that it honesty looks like it’s from a vending machine.

this girls ring looks like a little kid wearing her mom’s cocktail ring…

to each their own, of course (this is coming from a married woman who has a small diamond in comparison to LITERALLY every ring, celebrity or no, that I’ve seen)

    • Oli says:

Agree I don’t like it, it’s not pretty at all

    • Mia V. says:

It’s loose on her finger and it’s more a “look at my cash” ring, which Mariah does better.

    • chelsea says:

      It is when you’re bearding.

      • V4Real says:

If that’s the case then that’s the case. But why is it just because two people who decided to abstain from sex until engaged or married have to be bearding. It’s not a Tebow situation who claims to still be a virgin and waiting for marriage. Wilson as he have said has had sex before; he was married.

    • Locke Lamora says:

Yeah, I don’t like it at all. Very tacky.

    • Cupcake says:

But that’s the point isn’t it? That it be gaudy. We can’t compare her ring to all engagement rings. We can really only compare it to other absurdly gaudy rings. With that being said, this ring is meh for me. The cut of the center diamond looks dated to me.

    • Nerdista says:

      Anistons ring is rose cut.

  2. Lucy says:

It’s a nice ring, but is it possible that it may be a bit big on her finger?

    • Wentworth Miller says:

Yeah to both. It may look better once she has it sized. Having it sized will also cover that scar from getting that “N” tattoo removed.

  3. AlmondJoy says:

I’m not a fan of huge rings, especially ones that weigh the finger down. But as long as she’s happy with it that’s all that matters. It’s Ciara’s ring, not mine.

  4. MeeMow says:

When diamonds are this big they look like costume jewelry to me. I guess I prefer a more delicate look.

    • Mel M says:

I’m with you. It’s like, we already know you’re rich so why not go with something with a little more style, more interesting to look at? It’s just so predictable. IDK, to me rich people + big a$$ diamonds = boring. To each their own though.

    • Wren says:

Me too. It looks super fake to me. If the diamond was about half that size or smaller I’d love it. The setting is really pretty and crisp, the giant stone looks out of proportion and like it’s going to fall out or something. Reminds me of a Ring Pop.

    • PinaColada says:

I personally would LOVE a 1-carat, flawless, clear diamond. No side stones, no “halo”- just the diamond. BUT I think her ring is absolutely gorgeous and I love it. I purposely chose a platinum band with a row of small, clear diamonds for my engagement per my sister’s suggestion. I regret it now and wish I had my diamond. But with 2 kids and one on the way, it’ll be a long, long time, if ever, to get a diamond for me. Sigh.

  5. Sam says:

I don’t like it at all. It’s just I don’t even know how to describe it. My favorite engagement ring is Blake Lively’s…I didn’t like it at first but as time went on I’ve actually fallen in love with it. The rose gold with the pink diamond just go really well together. Maybe I’ll feel the same way with Ciara’s. Like my initial reaction is just that it’s way too big for her hand but maybe overtime as I see it more I’ll end up liking it aka it’ll grow on me.
Edit: Never mind. I don’t think I’ll ever like it. It looks like it came out of the 25 cent machine.

  6. V4Real says:

I couldn’t care less about the ring. I’ve never been a jewelry person.

Ciara is a beautiful woman with a kick-ass body. Still those gladiator sandals are not my thing.
People are making a big deal about Wilson’s vow to restrain from sex until engaged or married but how do we know for sure that Ciara didn’t want this arrangement as well. After her failed relationship with Future and rumored of being used for sex from a couple of other men in the hip hop world maybe she just wanted to take the time to know that Wilson was the real deal.

    • Miss Grace Jones says:

I don’t get the fuss either. A relationship doesn’t have to revolve around getting sex and it’s not impossible for two people tp love each other and not have it all the time or at the center of their relationship.

    • Wren says:

It’s my opinion that discussing your sex life (or lack of it) in public is crass. It’s not a big deal what they choose to do, but I don’t think they should talk about it. I don’t want to hear about you banging your partner and I don’t want to hear about it if you’re not. That’s super personal information.

      • V4Real says:

If you don’t want to hear about it then don’t listen or read about it. Problem solved.

    • Locke Lamora says:

People are making a big deal about it because they made a big deal about it by talking about it.

      • Bridget says:

He spoke about it at an engagement at his church, and now they’re asked about it in interviews. Mostly because people can’t believe anyone would be abstinent in a relationship with Ciara (which may actually be why she’s happy to abstain)

      • Locke Lamora says:

He still spoke about it, church or no church. And they could say no comment and not elaborate about it.

      • V4Real says:

Depending on what religion you are and what church you attend the pastors preach about abstinence. Therefore a church is the place to talk about it, esp, if you made a vow to God. And celebs could say no comment about a lot of things but they don’t.

    • Bridget says:

ITA there. Ciara hasn’t had the greatest track record with men and it’s entirely possible she appreciates that he’s not after her just for her body.

And I’ve gotten the impression that for the most part they’re the ones that are being asked about their choice to abstain, they’re not bringing it up in interviews. A lot of Russell’s comments that shed light on this in the first place were from a public speaking engagement at his church.

  7. willful ignorance says:

Meh. I am not a ring fan at all.

Rather have a house then a huge ring.

  8. Rockin Robin says:

    Its too big.

    • crtb says:

I don’t get having a ring that is too big to wear and catches onto everything nor do I understand having a ring too expensive to wear and you live in fear that someone will take it off you. I’d rather have something that is comfortable to wear everyday.

  9. Sassenach says:

I’m not a fan of the ring but I’m so happy for her! I hope all of the men bashing her all over social media continue to stay pressed and angry while she enjoys her engagement and career resurgence.

  10. AG-UK says:

So big it looks fake, less is more a lot of the time.

  11. AnneR says:

They look more like brother/sister than a couple. Creepy.

    • word says:

Ha ha that’s funny. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a couple that look like they are actual brother and sister. There has to be some sort of theory about this.

    • Colette says:

Really ? I don’t see any facial features that they have in common.

  12. Pandy says:

Wow. Ring envy!! I’d love a big honkin’ rock to weigh down my finger.

    • Katy says:

I’ll go ahead and say it too Pandy!! The ring is beautiful and I bet in person it is even more incredible. There’s NO way a perfect diamond looks fake. I’m sorry but that is just jealousy coming out. I bet any one of the ladies on here saying they would never wear something like that would be eating their words if they were given a ring like this. I have a very pretty 2 1/2 carat, almost flawless diamond in my wedding ring and after 21 years of marriage I have never once wished he hadn’t made that choice!!

  13. word says:

I hope they have a quick engagement because these two are becoming annoying. Ciara used to have a hot singing career. Now she’s just known for who she dates.

  14. Colette says:

I don’t really care about rings but I am happy they are engaged.I can’t wait to see Baby Future as a ring bearer.

  15. JoanK says:

When you think that that diamond probably came from a war-torn country in Central Africa such as the Congo, it’s kind of horrible.
Or is there a way in the US to purchase ethically mined diamonds??

    • word says:

If you use a cell phone or lap top, you are also a part of the problem. Over 80% of the minerals needed for cell phones, lap tops, etc. come from mines in the Congo. I just recently watched a documentary on it. Truly horrible conditions with children doing all the dangerous dirty work. It’s so sad. They do it for pennies while companies are making billions.

    • FishOutOfWater says:

If you buy clothes or appliances/merchandise from Target, H&M, Forever 21, etc. than you are also supporting the exploitation of innocent individuals, and by large, dangerous capitalist economies. If you are wealthy enough to purchase your clothing/items elsewhere, then I would suggest that you donate your time to more worthy causes than ‘exposing’ such truths on celebrity ‘dirt’ websites.
I agree with your opinion, but I have an issue with your issue. If you do nothing but complain, you are no better than Ciara who received a gift from her fiancé.

  16. lucy2 says:

It’s pretty, but way too big. I’d catch it on everything, and it looks like it’s about to slide off her finger. I like a classic emerald cut.
I once worked with a client who had a ring bigger than Ciara’s that she wore every day. It was like walking around with a doorknob on her hand.

  17. Iheartgossip says:

Jewelry is for ego and nothing else. The flashier the jewelry the bigger the ego. Diamonds, especially; do not impress me. Too many people enslaved in horrible conditions to mine them. Nope.
