James Franco was trying to ‘subvert’ the Oscars when he co-hosted in 2011

A lot of people have put the 2011 Oscar telecast out of their minds. No one wants to remember it. It was unfortunate in so many ways, mostly because that year, the Oscars were hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway. I still feel waves of sympathy for Anne because of that. She got so much hate for that night, but at least she TRIED. James Franco did not try. Franco disengaged at one point and he basically left Anne up there alone to try to carry the telecast. It was awful.

In previous interviews, both Hathaway and Franco have discussed the night and how everything went wrong, and at one point, Franco seemed to throw Anne under the bus a little bit, like she was the one who screwed it up. But while Anne recovered – only to inspire Hathahate a few years later – Franco basically fell into a deep hole of avant-garde art projects and impossible smugness. Anyway, Franco has a new interview with New York Magazine to promote a new film and some of his various art projects, and the whole piece is one giant eye-roll. You can read the full piece here. The most interesting part is perhaps Franco’s thoughts on the 2011 Oscars, now five years removed from the situation.

He says he convinced Anne to cohost with him: “Now, sometimes, sadly, people will follow my example or will do things with me, and it won’t go so well for them. When Anne Hathaway decided to host the Oscars with me … She had said no before, and then they asked me to ask her, and I said, “Let’s just do it. It’ll be an adventure,” and then we got a lot of sh-t for it….I probably got more than she did, but she got a lot.

What was so bad about hosting the Oscars? “You know, I think one of the things that happens in film and television and performance-based things is that people will criticize the performers because they’re the face of the piece. We didn’t write the script….In other cases, someone like Steve Martin or Chris Rock will probably have a bigger hand in the writing of the thing, but Anne and I did not.

Whether he regrets the Oscars: “I wasn’t trying to turn the soap opera into something of my own making. I was in their hands. When I was asked to do the Oscars, I thought I’ll do the same thing. Nobody expects me to host the Oscars…So I thought, here’s, again, an opportunity to put myself in their hands, but I’ve never aspired to be the Oscars host. I don’t care really. I’m going to do what they ask me to and do it as well as I can, but I don’t need this to be the best Oscars ever. I’m not getting anything out of that. In the best-case scenario, even if I killed it, it’s not going to help my career, because that’s not what it’s based on. It was an experiment.

What he learned: “Nobody cares if you disrupt a soap opera, but if you go and host the Oscars and they get even an inkling of you trying to subvert it in any way or punk it in any way, people are going to get pissed.”

[From Vulture]

I just feel sort of empty about this. Like, Franco’s overwhelming hipster ambivalence has made me ambivalent as well. Do I think that it’s revisionist history to say that he got more sh-t than Anne Hathaway? Absolutely. She got a ton of crap for it, but she handled herself like a professional and she overcame it. Do I think Franco’s a douche for basically throwing producers and writers under the bus? Sure. Do I think he was trying to do high-level performance art to subvert the Oscars? Um, no. He was just high, weak and boring.

Here are some photos of Franco at the Tribeca Film Festival a few days ago.

Perfect in regards to Franco: high, weak and boring.
Perfect in regards to a lot of pretentious artistes, at least at my campus.

Also he’s annoying AF, but I enjoy watching him in that 11.63.something….something show about time travel.

    • Sarah(too) says:

Is that good? The fact that he is in 11.22.63 is why I haven’t watched it.

      • Myrto says:

11.22.63 was actually good. I even enjoyed Franco in it even though I normally can’t stand him.

  2. Esther says:

he is being paid to be the face of it. the writers usually get very little compared to what they contribute. if you are the face of it you also get the salary coming with that so suck it up. its not like this criticism was undeserved.

    *Facepalm*

He’s a douche, but my current favorite douche because Howl was awesome. One of my besties is good friends with his mom. I’ve heard she’s really cool.

    • Naya says:

I too love James Franco and I will not be shamed for it. My only qualm with him is that sometimes he has too much saliva in his mouth as he is speaking and its gross. Swallow Franco.

    • Kitten says:

Franco lover here. Have y’all seen 11.22.63 yet? He’s good in it and yeah, he’s hot. I can’t help it–it’s the squinty smile.

@Naya-I know exactly what you mean. He kind of sounds like a cartoon character sometimes.

      • Esmom says:

I have to check out 11.22.63, thanks, I just loved that book. So good. And I’m not a Stephen King fan.

      • Kitten says:

Don’t get me wrong-the series is flawed (I won’t give anything away but I had a few issues with it) but it’s still totally worth watching, Esmom.

    • mp says:

I have no doubt his family is nice. But something went awry in James…he was so pretty, but now I think of him like a busted Jordan Catalano/Jared Leto. The talent never caught up to the looks and arrogance. if that makes sense.

  4. Lorn says:

I don’t hate what he’s saying. He’s not a comedian. He put it in the hands of the scriptwriters and producers. I don’t necessarily blame him for the whole thing being a disaster. What were the producers thinking in the first place?

    • Esmom says:

I don’t think he needed to be a comedian to make it work. He needed to be charming and muster up at least a bit of enthusiasm (maybe use his acting skills if that didn’t come naturally) and not phone it in. They weren’t paying him to “punk it.”

      • perplexed says:

Yeah, I think he just needed to be a little charismatic, which I used to think was some kind of requirement for actors. Actors seemed to get annoyed that people expect them to do their jobs when we have to watch them for hours on end.

Robert DeNiro is a very shy person as himself, but even when he’s giving a speech as himself he seems able to turn the switch to the other side of the dial and become charismatic.

    • Carol says:

Has Franco ever seen an Oscar telecast? It’s always a bit… jazz hands. What made him think it was going to be different? But I guess he realizes the Oscars that were somewhat good had comedians who had a hand in the writing. I find it funny that people still talk about that Oscar show.

  5. Apple says:

He’s annoying and pretentious and the stuff he studied/is studying for in his PhD sounds like ivory tower theoretical nonsense. “Subvert the Oscars”? That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard all day. This guy tried to pick up some 17-year-old over instagram or something and didn’t he write some awfully condescending review of an exceptional actor around his age group? Can’t remember who it was now but he was soooo condescending.

    • BangersandMash says:

      It was Ryan Gosling

And his 12 years a slave review about people attracted to giving people pain was awkward at best.

I like every single thing you said Apple.
      I’m with you

  6. Izzy says:

He’s such a lying bag of douche. He just didn’t have the chops to make it a funny telecast and didn’t care enough to try. Anne Hathaway would have been better off hosting by herself. Or with a cardboard cutout of him.

  7. BangersandMash says:

What’s sad is that this 40 year old, 6 years later is throwing everything in the book but his own (lack of) effort.

But I guess since we’re going back to this conversation, he gave it his” Johnny Depp hostage/apology video” best at the oscars.

    Grow up!!!

    • Birdix says:

Yes, rather than say, “I blew it, that was a bad experience,” he’s created an elaborate structure in his mind: I was just along for the ride, doesn’t impact my career, people take these things way too seriously. While these are true, it was a group endeavor and he’s only thinking of himself. Seems at best narcissistic and perhaps a bit aspie.

  8. grabbyhands says:

    What a humorless clod.

“I don’t need this to be the best Oscars ever”, so once I realized that everyone wasn’t bowing down to bored genius I was throwing in their face, I basically stopped even trying, because it was the only way left to get any press or attention out of it.

I actually felt bad for AH for once-you could see her desperately try to engage him and he gave her nothing. For all of its weaknesses, the show is supposed to be an entertainment and if you don’t want to do it, don’t so it and spare us all from your tired hipster shtick. I can’t think why the producers thought he was a good idea.

  9. Nancy says:

I forgot how horrible they were. I remember almost cringing in embarrassment for them, it was so bad. He seemed totally high on something and I don’t think it was life. He’s weird. I will refrain from critizing Anne as that will open a whole other can of worms. Let’s just say they were the worst hosts in Oscar history.

  10. SM says:

That is the best way to sell shit for gold I have seen in a very, very long time. I am not a bad actor, I intentionally sabotage myself for art. And if you do not see my failing this way, you are just too stupid to understand art. Why is he still a thing? His attitude is appalling

    • Esmom says:

I know, seriously. And what does “disrupt a soap opera” mean? I thought he had a legit guest role, but I guess he’s above acknowledging that.

      • jinni says:

I think he means the time he was a character on General Hospital for a short stint.

      • michelleb says:

Same thing as his subverting the Oscars. He was absolutely horrendous on General Hospital (which is saying something in itself). Everyone I know hated his Franco the Artiste character and it seems like most of the soap boards did too. The only people that seemed to like it were the showrunners, because Franco is back now and played by another actor – though he at least is not so god-awful pretentious.

James Franco’s GH character Franco was just as smug and pretentious as his portrayer – with sociopathic and pyschotic tendencies thrown in for good measure.

He is just so exhausting that I can’t watch him in anything anymore. Ever.

  11. HK9 says:

He didn’t subvert anything, he just sucked.

  12. Natalie says:

He’ll take the job but won’t try because there isn’t anything in it for him? Wow.

And I don’t know if it’s worse that he’s pretending he didn’t care because he bombed or if he was actually too dumb to realize that was the networking opportunity of a lifetime for his career

  13. Lucy2 says:

Subvert? Oh please. He is just lazy and selfish, and sounds like a spoiled child who says “I didn’t want that anyway!” when he doesn’t get exactly what he wants.
Anne would’ve been far better off by herself, at least she cared and made an effort.

  14. Jayna says:

He’s insufferable. He didn’t give it his best and didn’t even try. Anne was up there not only working her ass off for her own side of the co-hosting duties, she then was also trying to make up for his lackluster performance on live TV.

  15. SM says:

It’s a pitty that his photo on the NY magazime is not included here in the post. They did sort of a Van Gogh impersonation. at least that was the vibe I got – Franco cutting his ear because he a tortured artist. I mean isn’t that what the bandage on this ear should imply? And I am not sure if the magazine people were trying to be oh so patronizing or was that a form of high level mockery of “Franco, the artist” himself??? Hmmm

  16. Miss M says:

Professor F! So artsy, so pretentious! Awww

  17. geneva says:

I think James Franco is highly overrated and in a way Anne Hathaway is highly underrated. What is that saying –

“A woman has to work twice as hard to be considered half as good as a man – fortunately that is not difficult.”

  18. islandwalker says:

He’s still a douche is what he meant to say.

  19. QQ says:

why does he always look so …clammy!?! like he just had a bad stomach flu

    • Anon33 says:

      Omg you nailed it.

I told my husband as we were watching 11.22.63, that JF should be hot but for some reason isn’t…I think that’s it! He always looks slightly damp and gross.

    • I Choose Me says:

      Right?

Never saw the hot but his brother Dave Franco is kinda cute.

  20. Beckysuz says:

Ok so has anyone heard that he is directing the 20 anniversary remake of Lifetime’s “mother may I sleep with danger?” ? Which is in my humble opinion still the best/worst thing Tori Spelling ever acted in. Franco might be annoying but I personally can’t wait for this crazy fest. I still remember watching that on NBC as a teenager. Back then all the teen starlets made terrible cheesy made for TV movies and they were gloriously insane.

    • Kitten says:

LOL..that is just…wow and I will definitely be tuning in. I swear that he never says no to anything. You gotta admire the diversity in his resume.

  21. Dee Kay says:

I think Franco is often a solid, and sometimes great, actor in films (and Freaks and Geeks), but is made of 1000% douche in his interviews.

  22. dana says:

Think Franco needs to start over. When he wasn’t so confident, so full of his own hype and so self assured he’s loved. He does too many things and forgets we could use a break from the Franco show.

I like Franco the actor, but Franco the guy needs to go take several seats in the back row and chill out. His look got really wrong for some reason, he looks awful.
