Charlize Theron admits that she ‘had a bit of a rough time’ with Tobey Maguire

CT1

Charlize Theron just got through with telling some hard truths about how she and Tom Hardy did not get along at all while making Mad Max: Fury Road. That was just three weeks ago! And now she’s telling some hard truths about Tobey Maguire. Charlize and Tobey worked together on The Cider House Rules, a film which I still dislike. And I’m even a big fan of John Irving! But The Cider House Rules is easily my least favorite Irving book and film adaptation. Anyway, Charlize covers the new issue of V Magazine – James Franco, of all people, conducted the interview – and she mentions that she and Tobey didn’t get along. You can read the full interview here. Some highlights:

Franco says he heard a rumor that she didn’t get along with Tobey Maguire: “Tobey and I had a bit of a rough time, yeah. I mean, we’re good now. It was a difficult movie.”

What it’s like to fake chemistry with someone you don’t like: “There really is real power in substitution. The thing is, as an actor, you can’t just rely on one method. Every day is completely different for a completely different reason. Whether it’s the weather, or the writing isn’t there, or you don’t get along with your castmate, you have to be able to go to something else that’s just as powerful. Does it make it as enjoyable? Probably not. I mean, there were just a couple of days that Tobey and I had a rough time. The rest of the movie, we actually had a really good time. I love Tobey. I’m kind of glad we had that experience on that movie. It teaches you different things. It taught me that I could fall in love with somebody in my head while looking at someone else.”

Playing the Evil Queen: “Fairy tales are really f–king dark. I read them every night to my kids. That character, the Evil Queen, to me started off very like, Yuck. It’s too iconic. It’s just so one-note. Everybody knows who this person is. Then, the more I read the story, the more I realized she was a f–king serial killer. She had this God complex. The more I humanized her, the more she became broken to me, the more I realized how painful it must be to be alive for that long and just know one way of living, to never learn another way of living. It became brutal.”

The sister-on-sister drama in The Huntsman: “It’s brutal when you think of the truth of what we face in society, what it means for a woman versus what it means for a man. What we, especially women, consider to be our strengths and to be our weaknesses. That aging is a weakness, that we think of it that way. Yet, it’s when we’re at our wisest. We’ve experienced everything and we should be considering ourselves the richest. We live in a society where women are treated like wilted flowers. They used to be pretty, but now they’re just kind of wilting. The guy is like a fine bottle of wine. He just gets better and better with age. It became very real, the vanity of it all. That we are all animals of our circumstance. If you are raised to believe that your power is only good for as long as you’re beautiful, then that’s what you’re going to believe. If you’re a child growing up in a f–king racist community, then you’re going to grow up thinking black people are bad. Hopefully, you’ll find a different path somewhere along your life. If your circumstances are so enclosed in the environment that you were taught in, then that’s what you’re going to be. That’s what this character is.”

[From V Magazine]

There are several interesting anecdotes that I couldn’t even fit into this post, including how crazy she used to get on auditions when she was first starting out, and how she purposefully didn’t work for a year after she did 2 Days in the Valley. As for the stuff I did include… well, that’s where an actor interviewing an actor helps you. Obviously, there have been stories about Charlize and Tobey Maguire going around for years, but it was just random, insular gossip. Now we know that Charlize couldn’t pretend to fall in love with Tobey without picturing someone else’s face attached to his head. Also, I kind of love “we are all animals of our circumstance” as an explanation for institutional sexism.

I liked Cider House well enough (hated that syrupy score, ruined the whole thing) and I recall thinking they had good chemistry so bravo for head substitution.

  2. Hellohello says:

    I like Charlize. Always have.

  3. Dorothy#1 says:

    Ugh she’s annoying.

  4. Don't kill me I'm French says:

Except Dicaprio and his posse gang, many many of Hollywood had rough times with Tobey .Where is his career now ? This guy has so many connections and he does nothing

    • jinni says:

Probably living off his wife’s family’s money and gambling with the likes of Damon, Affleck, and Leo.

      • Don't kill me I'm French says:

He has his own money .He was paid $40 millions for SpiderMan 4 who never was made for example thank to his “pay or play” contract rule

    • Cindy says:

Does anyone else remember an article describing Tobey playing cards with Dicaprio and the rest of the posse, and insisting a waitress bark like a dog? TM really has a sadistic streak it would seem. I can’t bring myself to watch any movie he’s been in since I read that.

      Oops. Answered down thread. 🙂

      • V4Real says:

        I remember that.

      • Bros says:

Me too, and was just going to post about it. That article made Tobey sound like a narcissistic sadist freak. It makes me like Charlize more to know she had a hard time with Tobey. There’s never been a face more antithetical to personality than Tobey’s.

      • Bridget says:

That wasn’t just an article, that was actually from a book their Hollywood poker connection wrote. At one point Aaron Sorkin was dead set on making it into a movie (he may still be, if he’s still dating the author).

      • ladysussex says:

YES! I agree with you. Also remember an article before that where he was vegan and if he had guests, he would make them take off any leather they were wearing, like a belt or shoes, and leave them outside before they could come into his home. I get that veganism is like a religion for some people, but my Muslim friends never ask me to take off my cross necklace before I come into their home! I was really put off by that.

      • pinetree13 says:

It was to the dealer not a waitress and he held a tip up for her and said to “Bark like a seal” he’s an ass.

    • Mixtape says:

James Franco, the interviewer here, had his own problems with Tobey on the Spider Man movies. I wonder how much of his side of the conversation was edited out.

  5. als says:

Both Tom Hardy and Tobey Maguire have the same profile: men that like to be adored.
It’s not surprising that Charlize didn’t get along with them.

    • mkyarwood says:

Yeah, I think even Hardy describes himself as ‘needy’. Hugh Grant is like that too. No notes, no anything that isn’t ‘gosh, you were just so great right now’.

    • Naya says:

This was my thought exactly. She doesnt take bs lying down. Remember the female high stakes poker dealer who wrote a book about how Tobey who made her imitate animals for her tip? When he is dressed like Peter Parker its hard to understand how he is a founding member of the Pussy Posse. Its stories like those that remind you why.

    • Tallia says:

But she dated Sean Penn, so yeah, that makes sense…

    • Emma - The JP Lover says:

@ALS, who wrote: “Both Tom Hardy and Tobey Maguire have the same profile: men that like to be adored.”

Tom Hardy sure seems to keep a low profile for someone who likes to be adored. I think he has the Russell Crowe thing, “I’m a man and I don’t mind proving it to you” … be it man or woman who needs the lesson. I don’t know ‘what’ Tobey Maquire’s damage is, other than being a life-time member in Leo’s ‘PP’ gang. I often wonder what his wife thinks of his involvement with the ‘PP’ gang.

  6. Kimna says:

I like her but I’m starting to think that SHE may be the hard one to work with….

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

She may be hard to work with but Maguire has an awful reputation to Hollywood ( look how he worked little after the end of SpiderMan movie)

    • littlemissnaughty says:

I think she’s just a tough woman who won’t back down when the people she works with get on her nerves or act like idiots. I don’t think her no. 1 goal was ever to be liked. She probably wants to be respected and it’s not like she has a terrible reputation in the industry. I don’t love everything she says and she’s definitely not warm and fuzzy but I respect that about her. And the two guys mentioned here, Hardy and Maguire, never seemed particularly easygoing to me.

    • Tara says:

She gets along with everyone but jerks. Everyone nice she makes friends with. Hardy and Macguire harp ve bad reputations, so I really don’t think it’s her. She just won’t take any crap.

    • NUTBALLS says:

That’s what I keep asking… does this woman get along with any of her co-stars??

      • Tara says:

Yes! She gets along great with everyone else. She becomes close friends with many of them too. Charlize and Emily Blunt are super close friends now. Jessica Chastain, Amanda Seyfried, Chris Hemsworth and so many others raved about how great she was to work with. There are only three people who Charlize didn’t get along with: Tom Hardy, Tobey Macguire, and a coked out Courtney Love. Are we really going to blame her? Lol

    • Kate says:

She probably is really hard to work with but I would say that actors have a personality type for the most part and can all be challenging to work with by turns.
That said, I read a review of Huntsman that really was not positive for her. She was described as having “outright chewed the scenery” and that is how I feel about pretty much every movie she’s been in.

  7. Gardenia says:

This seems to be a recurring issue with her. Maybe she’s the one who’s difficult to get along with.

  8. Mel M says:

This isn’t a surprise. Two people that are full of themselves not getting along? Shocker! I will give Charlize the benefit though that we’ve all heard Toby is not very nice to women. He is/was in the pussy posey after all and she is not the kind of woman to just take that.

  9. Maya says:

What do you know – another actor she couldn’t get along with.

Once or twice it can be others but if it happens several times then the problem is you.

Let’s see how she goes with Fast crew – Michelle, Vin and the Rock don’t suffers fools and they will call her out if she behaves bit*hy as she usually does.

    • Jayna says:

Tobey isn’t known to be the easiest guy. That book by the lady who ran poker games was slamming regarding Toby Maquire and his massive ego and complimentary towards most of the other actors..

Charlize says they get along fine now.

So far all I see is two actors she didn’t get along with that great by her own admission.

      • Naya says:

“So far all I see is two actors she didn’t get along with that great by her own admission.”

And both these guys are established a**holes.

    • LAK says:

How to put this politely……Tobey Maguire is a Wanker! First order Knob! First Mate of the ship of Dbags!

    • Tara says:

No surprise you would have this to say. She’s worked with Michelle before and Michelle loves her. The Rock also loves her and called her a friend and a badass. Charlize is the one who doesn’t suffer fools either. It’s no coincidence that the only two people she had a hard time working with are well known jerks. B*tchy as she usually does? That’s not true. Jessica Chastain said that Charlize was so nice.

    • manta says:

She’ll be fine with this crew. As tara pointed, she worked with Michelle before. The director already worked with her on The Italian Job. Same with Statham. If the experience had traumatized them that much , she wouldn’t be in.
And I remember behind the scenes footage of this one, she seemed to get along with Wahlberg and Mos Def too. Not so much with Norton, but again, not sure that would be on her.

      • Magnoliarose says:

Norton is a known jerk. Insufferable and petty. It is only the difficult ones.

  10. Jegede says:

    Charlize, maybe it’s yo……………..

    Never mind.

  11. manda says:

I loved cider house rules, the book, LOVED it. It was the first Irving I read, and really the only one I really liked. I loved all the details and the end notes. The movie adaptation was awful.

  12. Tig says:

OT- watched Pawn Sacrifice with Tobey playing Bobby Fischer- he was very good in it. Great cast too.
I have no doubt that Charlize is not a “people pleaser”, and that can no doubt create probs with co-stars who are used to/expect that.

    • mia girl says:

I completely get the chess reference, but man, that is one if the worst movie titles ever. Sounds like a fake name from a movie mocking the titles of real movies (like the scene at the end of Tropic Thunder).

  13. Div says:

Charlize may be difficult herself but haven’t there been rumors or weird throwaway comments for years about Toby being a sexist d*ck? Not to mention that in that Vanity Fair article about the woman who used to throw those poker parties for the Hollywood elite…Toby was called out by name for being horrible and there was some story in the article where he seemed like a sociopath. It was interesting because while some celebrities were praised and some were portrayed in a somewhat negative light, Toby was the only one who was portrayed as truly heinous and worse than the typical Hollywood douchebag.

    • Jayna says:

I just mentioned higher up about the poker games. I didn’t see your post.

    • Jayna says:

That’s a gorgeous cover of Charlize.

    • mia girl says:

Yup. I’m not ready to put this on Charlize because she hasn’t gotten along with two coworkers who are known to be difficult (sorry Tom Hardy fans). There are too many stories about both these guys.

In my 20+ year career, I’ve been lucky to have great co-worker relationships/friendships with so many people, but there are at least a couple of people I have not gotten along with and it was a similar attitude that they generally had in common, not me. I was not the only one who would occasionally butt heads with them.

      • lucy2 says:

This. If everyone else loved Tom and Tobey and thought they were just a peach to work with, I’d say maybe it was her, but neither of those guys has a great reputation.

  14. Lucy2 says:

I don’t imagine she is easy going 100% of the time, but after reading that article a few years back about Tobey at the poker game, I’m willing to bet any conflicts were her not putting up with his BS.

  15. OrigialTessa says:

She’s just so stinking pretty, it’s unreal.

  16. Kaye says:

I liked her insightful comments, and I’m becoming more Team Charlize with every interview.

  17. ell says:

i’ve always liked her. and i bet co stars not getting along happens far more often than they’d like to admit, but actors never talk about it because i mean, they have to sell the thing.

  18. Tara says:

I like her. I think she is just a strong woman who doesn’t take any crap. You give her nice, you get nice. You give her nasty, you get it. Tobey and Tom Hardy are well known jerks, so I don’t think it’s just her as much as some people are quick to label the woman in situations like this. She gets along with everyone else who isn’t a jerk.

    • Magnoliarose says:

She would be working if she couldn’t get along with people. If they axed Tobey then they would cut a woman even faster. She’s just tough. I agree with you.

  19. TOPgirl says:

I think of her as a monstrous woman. I don’t know why. She doesn’t seem like an person easy to deal with.

  20. Brit says:

I remember Tobey had a serious drug and alcohol problem too. He even admitted to being in aa when he was promoting spider man 3. I wonder if he just quit acting and is now producing indies because of his issues. I feel bad for his wife. Jennifer seems really sweet and lovely and there are so many rumors he cheats on her.

  21. uglistepsister says:

Cider House Rules is one of my all time favorite books. The movie sucked. It was just so empty, somehow. I didn’t think it would be possible to take that story and make such a blahhh movie. I don’t know about who likes who in Hollywood, but if Tobey M is such an ass that he made someone “bark like a dog”, then I can lay all my disappointment at CHR movie right on his assy little shoulders. Finally! I have resolution.

  22. Milli94 says:

I feel like all of Charlize’s not gettibg along with stories are with men and douchey men at that. All the women she works with adore her includibg like all the Mad Max girls and Jennifer Lawrence who gush about her all the time. so i am not gonna hold this against her.

    • Tara says:

Yes Jennifer Lawrence, Amanda Seyfried, Emily Blunt, Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Chastain, etc all love her. I remember Jeremy Renner was disappointed he didn’t get the Mad Max role instead of Tom Hardy because he said it would have been so cool to hang out with his good friend Charlize,

  23. Barbara says:

Seems like it is time for her to consider it might be herself that causes these problems. I used to be a big fan, but now feel she is very full of herself.

  24. I Choose Me says:

She’s not my favourite but her not getting along with someone reputed to be an asshole like Tobey, wins her points in my book.

  25. Sarah01 says:

    Love the cover, stunning!
Society needs to get over the fact that not everyone woman is sweet and likes to smile and please. Charlize seems like she can’t suffer fools or jerks and I respect her for that.
