Johnny Depp: Donald Trump would be ‘the actual last president of the US’

FFN_FlyUK_Alice_Premiere_051016_52049596

A few months ago, Johnny Depp called Donald Trump a “brat.” Those were the halcyon days of March, when people thought there was a chance that Trump would not get the GOP presidential nomination. Now in the dark and stormy days of May, Depp’s words seem somewhat prescient. He described Trump as having a “pretense…There’s something created about him in the sense of bullydom. But what he is, I believe, is a brat.” Well, Depp was in London earlier this week for the (boozy) premiere of Alice Through the Looking Glass, and he was asked again about Trump.

Hollywood A-lister Johnny Depp claimed Donald Trump would be the United States’ last ever president because ‘it just won’t work after that’.

Speaking on the red carpet of the premier of his latest film, Depp, 52, claimed a Trump victory in November would provide excitement in a historical kind of way. However, Depp said he could never support the controversial billionaire business mogul because he ‘does not believe in that stuff’.

He told Minnie Stephenson of Channel 5: ‘If Donald Trump is elected President of the United States, in a historical way it is kind of exciting, because we will see the actual last president of the United States. It just won’t work after that.’ He added: ‘I’m not into that kind of stuff.’

He appeared at the premiere without his wife Amber Heard, 30. He said he was pleased she was ‘putting up with him’.

He said: ‘I think everybody has a sense of themselves, we are all living our lives together and living closely with someone I know I wouldn’t be considered normal, I suppose, so I thank her for that. I thank my mum for that, I thank my father for that, for putting up with me. I also thank the London policemen when I was arrested here, they were very nice and gave me a cup of tea.’

[From The Daily Mail]

I think the “I’m not into that kind of stuff” is more of a reference to how Depp isn’t very political. I mean, he’s not George Clooney or Matt Damon. He’s not known as some big fundraiser or politically active guy, although he did attend a party at the Obama White House. So maybe he’s just talking about Trump – Depp isn’t “into that kind of stuff” when it comes to Trump. Anyway, I don’t think Depp is wrong. Electing Trump president would be the end of the American presidency.

As for what Depp says about Amber and how thankful he is that Amber puts up with him… sometimes, I think Depp is astonished that he was able to pull it off, that he was able to trade in Vanessa Paradis for a younger trophy wife.

I hope we would be strong enough to withstand a Trump presidency and even learn from it, but I, for one, don’t want to find out.

    • lisa says:

i’m actually starting to have anxiety about it and it is making me very worried

and i remember that neither of us liked hillary or voted for her in the primary. it’s such a nightmare.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Such a nightmare, Lisa. I’m actually probably going to vote for Hillary now. If you had told me that last year, I would never have believed it. Never. I still can’t believe it, but what choices do we have? What are you going to do, do you know?

      • lisa says:

i was planning to vote 3rd party but now I’m scared. i live in pa and i feel like i am going to have to suck it up and vote for HRC.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I’ll hold the vomit bucket for you if you’ll hold mine for me.

      • Jane.fr says:

While it might not be pleasant, remember that you’re doing the right thing and take pride and comfort in that.
As the quote says, “Let not any one pacify his conscience by the delusion that he can do no harm if he takes no part, and forms no opinion. Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing.”

      • EM says:

I am so saddened that people are willingly going for this man just based on his character. What kind of adult says horrible things about a person & family and then turns around and says good things – rhetorical question. I am resigning myself to a Trump presidency because I sincerely do not think Hillary will win and shame on the democrats. Actually shame on decent Americans for allowing this man to get this far.

Anyhow for now, I will keep singing my version of “If you’re happy & you know it…”
“If you’re racist and you know it, stump for Trump!
If you’re racist and you know it, stump for Trump!
        If you’re racist and you know it, and you really want to show it;
If you’re racist and you know it, stump for Trump!”

      • ol cranky says:

@Lisa & GNAT if you have a hard time stomaching a vote for Clinton, don’t look at is as voting for her, look at it as voting to avoid huge setbacks/regressionism on quite a few significant issues. Under Trump citizens united will still hold sway, there will be now wall street reform and while I doubt that Trump really is anti-choice (especially when it comes to a mistress he doesn’t want a wife to know about) he will still tow the GOP platform with regard to women’s rights to self-determination over their own bodies (read: more TRAP laws, more pharmacists “conscience” laws to allow them to interject their religious beliefs to refuse to fill any prescription for a woman they think has abortifacient potential), more bathroom laws, more Kim Edwards type folks trying to stop SSM, less support for families in need, more POC at risk, etc.

The best chance we have to give third parties a chance and eventually destroy the monopoly of the 2-party system is to start voting 3rd party candidates at the grass roots and state levels where they will have the more immediate & direct impact you want on your communities. As that happens, they will bubble up to higher levels of government. What the GOP could do in 4 years of a Trump presidency could set us back a century as the GOP would name Scalia’s replacement and probably RBG’s – it’s not worth making a BernieorBust point this time around.

and FFS encourage everyone to vote in the midterms too in order to make sure we can swing the pendulum back from the right fringe that’s become mainstream

    • Who ARE these people? says:

Truly a race to the bottom. And the primaries aren’t even over yet.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Lol, a race to the bottom. So, so true. How did this happen? I guess I wasn’t paying attention, because this has me rocked to the core and stunned.

      • lisa says:

yeah I’m floored. how did we get here? such a big country and this is what we have.

      • Magnoliarose says:

6 more months in this black hole before it’s over. I’m avoiding political news for a few days. I just can’t.

    • lucy2 says:

I think he’s a big coward, so if by some horrible luck he gets elected (no, no, no) he’s going to chicken out and make others do the hard work and hard choices. He’s already back tracked on half the stuff he’s said (which doesn’t make it ok, but just shows he’s full of shit). So I too think we’d survive, but it would be very bad for the US, and the rest of the world, so let’s not find out!

  2. Biting Panda says:

    Johnny Depp, Voice of Reason.

Well. The End is here, y’all.

  3. Nancy says:

I don’t dare try to understand what he meant by that comment. I do know that he is starting to resemble Gomez Adams.

  4. Jaded says:

I wonder how stoned he was when he made that comment? If anything, a Trump presidency would teach the US a good hard lesson to NEVER make a mistake like that or fall for his brand of bullsh*t ever again. The whole world would unite in treating America like a pariah.

    • it's like you know says:

That would be nice to believe, but I seriously doubt it would unfold like that.

      • SusanneToo says:

I agree with you. There’s a certain segment of American society that seems to say “We’re dumb as sh*t and proud of it.” The Ted Nugent mentality. And they raise children in that atmosphere. I really despair.

    • Starkiller says:

Uh, the whole world is already united in treating America like a pariah.

      • Beanie says:

Did you get the whole world’s consensus on this opinion? What a useless thing to say.

  5. Kelly says:

I don’t care for Trump, but, come on, Johnny Depp as a political commentator for the millennium is a little much. Trump will not end the presidency. The political machine that is our government has withstood worse than him.

Our real problem is Congress. Have you heard about the new book from a Congressman, “The Confessions of Congressman X.”

    Some excerpts…

    • “Most of my colleagues are dishonest career politicians who revel in the power and special-interest money that’s lavished upon them.” • “My main job is to keep my job, to get reelected. It takes precedence over everything.”

    That’s a problem.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Yes, Congress is a huge problem and evil scum Paul Ryan licked Drumpf’s butt for him today. So, unless they’re thrown out in November, and they probably won’t be because all politics is local, Congress is along for Drumpf’s ride to Hell.

    • lucy2 says:

They needed an insider to tell them that? Common knowledge!

    • Amy says:

“Johnny Depp as a political commentator for the millennium is a little much.”

      Not really.

  6. me says:

The fact Trump even made it this far should scare the sh*t out of people. He has millions of supporters…millions of Americans who think and act JUST LIKE HIM.

    • Pip says:

I think this is what terrifies non-Americans most of all: what does it say about the country that so many tens of thousands of people are supporting this racist, misogynist, irrational, inarticulate blowhard ….?

God. Going from Obama to Trump would be the absolute distillation of sublime to ridiculous.

      Scary days indeed.

  7. Kitten says:

Does anybody need me to translate? I speak fluent stoner.

  8. BangersandMash says:

I may come off as an *sshole.
but i’m frustrated today, so I wanna be an *sshole

But why doesn’t he thank Vanessa Paradis??

Amber already has an “I’m over it” expression on her face every time they are together. Can you imagine the amount of work, the amount of ‘mothering’ and ‘policing’ Vanessa had to go through??? YEARS!!!

The guy didn’t wait for the ink to dry on those divorce papers before he started being with Amber, getting matchy tattoos with Manson, splurging on islands, bloating up like a balloon, dog smuggling and attaining mysterious injuries.

I can wager my house that she was keeping ALLLL of that in check for years…..
Give the woman some proper props too.

and another thing… “geee thanks hon, for putting up with me.”…… finished with a ruffling of your hair and a pat on that back….. Thats how i take that comment!!

    • mmm says:

which divorce papers? they didn’t were married, not divorce papers
Why he would thank Vanessa now? she isn’t “putting up with” him. They split ages ago and he thanked her enough for the children they have with a big house in LA and many millions on her bank account after the split

      • Liz says:

“with a big house in LA and many millions on her bank account after the split”

That’s disgusting if you think that is a fair trade. They shared a life together still share two children together and you think paying her off in the best she deserves?? That’s an insult to ALL women.

I for one hope he STILL respects the mother of his children MORE than some of his so called fans do. Does he need to thank her publicly, no not really, but privately I sure hope he doesn’t think like you. “I paid you for your time.” Sick.

And it’s on the record he did in fact, repeatedly credit Vanessa for keeping him sane, making him happy and thanked her for putting up with him. For 14 years. And even after the split he only said good things about her. My guess is, his new wife wouldn’t take it too well if he mentioned that now.

As for that comment, he lumped her in with his parents and then the freaking police of London soooo, it’s just his usual dodge and joke when he doesn’t really want to answer the damn question.

    • Pandora says:

So he should constantly thank his ex publicly instead of his current wife who has been with him for years? Ok..

He’s actually said very nice things about Vanessa in some interviews after the break up.

Also, most of the things you mentioned happened years after they officially broke up. He made his first public appearance with Amber as his gf one year after the break, and married her three years after the break up.

She has moved on, why do people want her to be a victim so bad?

  9. HollyG says:

If Johnny Depp is amazed at managing to snag his moist-lipped child bride, imagine how amazed he’ll be if he ever tries to get rid of her. She has the look of one who does not return quietly , or cheaply, from whence she came.

Re Trump: it isn’t going to happen. And if it did, he literally cannot do any of the things he’s promising, which just makes him an ineffectual old crackpot.

    • Lilacflowers says:

No, he can’t do what he is promising but the President is responsible for managing federal agencies and Drumpf’s incompetence will have a dire effect on the functioning of those agencies.

      • HollyG says:

Best case, he just leaves 95% of the government alone to run itself. His distinct lack of experience with, or interest in, the details and legalities of municipal administration is a benefit IF the people he actually puts in charge are sane human beings. He’s not governing anything, and he knows it.

      • Lilacflowers says:

I really don’t trust him to appoint capable people for any position. He has driven multiple businesses into bankruptcy. He thinks Palin would make a good Cabinet member. I really doubt he can grasp the concept that, well, somebody has to answer the phone at the local Social Security office – and yes, that can be an issue. Reagan couldn’t grasp that concept and lost multiple lawsuits about the phones.

  10. Whirldly says:

I don’t think Johnny Depp is some kind of political savant, I think he’s just the guy that said Trump would be the last president “because it just wouldn’t work anymore” first… and by hitting on that notion, actually said something important.
There have been terrible presidents before and God help the world (Canadian here) there will be again. But electing Trump – a racist, misogynistic bully with zero understanding of economics, diplomacy, allegiances, the constitution, the environment and basic humanity – a man with no self-awareness coupled with a hair-trigger sensitivity for himself alone, as POTUS could turn the world upside down, destroying economies, treaties and trust in record time. Thoughtful world leaders wouldn’t be able to have rational conversations with him, while despots will be thrilled to go twisted perverse ego against perverse twisted ego in potentially disastrous mutually-assured grudge matches from hell. Or to it.
We’d all be dreaming of the halcyon days of bad presidents.

    • Pip says:

      Really well put, Whirldly.

The rest of the world is holding its breath.

    • lisa says:

i just might have to save this to a template to be cut and pasted when i just can’t argue anymore

    • lucy2 says:

That’s what worries me most of all, relationships with other countries and leaders.

    • guilty pleasures says:

Well put. I, too, may copy and paste when weary of explaining my fear and disgust!

  11. Starkiller says:

I’ve been saying this for months. If he’s elected, there won’t be a United States anymore. He and his supporters have given the rest of the world an excuse to loathe us even more than they already do, and it doesn’t matter who gets elected at this point–we’re already laughingstock just for letting him get this far.

    • Whirldly says:

Look, it could happen to anyone. It was happening to Canada for years before we shook off our complacency and snapped out of our collective slumber and elected Trudeau. The world has since taken to his charisma, good looks and compassionate image, but not so long ago at the beginning of the election campaign, Trudeau was a distant third behind our two-term sitting Conservative Prime Minister (and our left wing NDP leader) and NOBODY gave him a chance.
But aside from Trudeau running a virtually faultless campaign, it was our right wing evangelical Christian leader who sealed his fate by chosing to double down on inciting hatred against Muslims, ignoring the plight of our at-risk indigenous Canadians and pumping up fears of terrorism in an effort to please and appease our own contingent of crazy right wing bigots – 30% of the population I’m depressed to report – who by being so solid in their support, under normal circumstances could have brought him a third victory. But it was finally so bad that the rest of us fixed it… and we did it the old fashioned way: we showed up in record numbers and voted.
      That’s all it takes.
      Voting.
Kiss complacency and vague hopes and busy schedules permanently goodbye and VOTE!!!
BTW, we were terrified of a Canada led by the vicious, heartless racist we’d permitted to lead us for more than a decade – and he wasn’t half the monster you’re facing.
      You can DO this.
      We’re counting on you!

  12. Rux says:

Congress would not allow Obama to do sheet so most likely they will not Trump to do anything either.

What scares me is — and there are a lot of things that scare me about Drumpf — the fact is, he is very sue happy (i.e., he will sue someone or threaten to sue them..it’s his MO). What would stop him from threatening to drop a bomb or actually doing just that….seriously!?!? Does anyone not worry that this emotionally immature manchild could very possibly have the launch codes to nuclear weapons?

  13. Birdy says:

Depp needs to take a bath and shut his stoned mouth! Dump aka trump will never be president! EVER !!!!

    • Amy says:

He doesn’t look in need of a bath to me and he shouldn’t shut his mouth when asked for his opinion. He is not saying Trump WILL be president.

  14. Lama Bean says:

So much going on here- dentures, hair implants, bleached “hair”, horrible tan. How is this considered strength? He’s struggling to be young when he’s nearly 70.
