Khloe Kardashian talks faith, spirituality: ‘At my core, I don’t believe in divorce’

Khloe Kardashian wrote an essay called “My Relationship With Spirituality” for Lena Dunham’ Lenny site/newsletter this week. I don’t really know how to feel about this, mostly because this essay seems like a defense of something about which Khloe wasn’t even facing criticism. We all know by now that the Kardashian-Jenner clan is somewhat religious. They go to a church in Calabasas, and they tend to get pap’d at the church on major holidays. But Khloe wants you to know that her relationship with God started a long time ago, and she’s still a spiritual person. You can read the full essay here. Some highlights:

Her father was a man of faith: “We went to church every Sunday, religiously. When we started getting older, my dad stopped going to church, but he still read the Bible every single day. Sundays then became about his bringing church and religion into our home. He would play gospel music — it had so much soul, and he loved that.”

Her spirituality and multi-faith acceptance: “I’ve always been a very spiritual person. I believe with every fiber of my being that there is a higher power. I love theology and I enjoy learning about other people’s religions. I’ve read about Buddhism and the Quran, and I’ve gone to Seder dinners with Jewish friends. One of my exes was Muslim and observed Ramadan, which is a month of fasting. You fast from sunrise to sunset to commemorate the first time the Quran was revealed to Muhammad, and I practiced it with him to be supportive. I don’t believe you need to be a certain religion to embrace someone else’s religion. It’s a matter of respecting someone. I’m a Christian but I don’t think a church necessarily makes you religious.”

No judgment: “Believing in a higher power is what guides me to make the right decisions. While I believe in heaven and hell and angels and spirits, I don’t judge people for their beliefs. And I don’t understand how others can sit around casting judgments on people because they have different religions and a certain point of view.”

Praying with her glam squad:
“My relationship with spirituality has changed over the years, but I’ve never stopped believing. I enjoy going to church, I just haven’t found a church that I’m passionate about, where I fit in. But I have daily devotionals. Every Christmas my mom buys them for me — they tell me a prayer and give me a scripture. The devotions are just one page each, with a quote from the Bible, a breakdown of its meaning, and a daily prayer. Sometimes it’s hard for me to absorb all the information at once, so I like that the daily devotions are small enough that I can really retain the message. I read these affirmations to my glam squad every day. They think I’m nuts, but I love it, and that works for me.”

She doesn’t believe in divorce: “I’ve been blessed with a lot in my life, and I’ve also had challenges. It was a challenge for me when I decided to get divorced. At my core, I don’t believe in divorce, but I came to a point in my marriage where I had to make the choice to take care of my own mental and emotional well-being in order to protect myself and my happiness. I am at peace with that decision and do feel like I honored my vows to the very end. I feel that I kept the serious vows I made in front of God with every inch of my heart, which is why I am still honoring them today even though my relationship with my ex-husband is in a different place. I believe in caring for my partner — past or present — “in sickness and in health,” and feel at peace with my relationship with God even after the fact. I’m thankful that I can rely on my God, who, along with my family, has led me through some of the most difficult times of my life.

[From Khloe’s Lenny Letter]

I like the way she explains her faith, honestly, and I wish more so-called people of faith would embrace multi-faith acceptance and love. Although I still don’t understand if this is in reaction to a criticism, or perhaps a defense of a widely-held belief that all of the Kardashian-Jenners simply worship at the altar of capitalism and nothing more. But if you’ve read interviews with Kim, Kris and Kanye before, you already know that they consider themselves devout people, people of faith, spiritual people. So…yeah. Khloe is spiritual. And her relationship with God informs her life, especially when she’s praying with her glam squad.

Was Khloe’s comment on divorce a bit of subtle shade directed towards Kim? I almost feel like she is directing it at Kim’s 72 day marriage. But when she says ” in sickness and in health” it could also mean there is talk in the family of Kim divorcing Kanye because of his increasing bizarre behaviour lately.
The timing of this essay seems suspect. There is always an ulterior motive when it comes to this family.

    • Zip says:

Lamar is sick, he is an addict. Maybe that’s what she is talking about? Not everything is about Kim.

      • Nancy says:

I agree Lamar is sick, but I also think she exasperated his demons. I disagree about Kim. Without her sex tape, which was the genesis of their fame and their reality show, we wouldn’t know about Khloe or any of them for that matter other than an occasional mention, if that. The mother sold her out, and with her came the flock. Khloe thinks she’s all that, but she is just the sister of a woman who hit the mother load by exposing her…….well exposing everything.

      • Zip says:

Yes, without that infamous tape none of those talentfree ladies would have a “career”. Still, not everything that comes out of any of the sisters mouth is a shade or reference to Kim and her weird life choices. Kloé is talking about being there for each other in marriage “in sickness and in health” which perfectly fits to Lamar and his addiction problems (he was in a coma after all). No Kimye stories for interpretation needed.

      • swak says:

Yes and she exploited him. That’s pretty hypocritical to me. You don’t exploit someone if you are in it for “in sickness or in health”. You support them and keep their problems out of the news. And you certainly don’t show them at their lowest point on your reality show (his picture in the hospital bed with all the tubes and bells and whistles).

      • Cran says:

@Nancy seriously no shade, lol. In my mind I think you meant to say exacerbated rather than exasperated his demons. Honestly, though, the image of Lamars exasperated demons👿 will stay with me all week. Thank you so much for that gift.

    • Mrs. Welen-Melon says:

      Kim storyline ahoy!

Or else we’ll soon be able to tune into “Khurch with Khloe”.

  2. BearcatLawyer says:

Sooo…she does not believe in divorce but does believe in God, fame%horing, and fake butts? Interesting value system.

Also, it strikes me as not terribly Christian to spew vitriol and personal attacks via Twitter. She needs to reread the New Testament!

    • Erinn says:

lol… not terrible Christian, but most of the nastiest people that pop up on my facebook timeline are self-proclaimed religious individuals. So I guess it’s the ‘in’ thing to do.

I find the line “Believing in a higher power is what guides me to make the right decisions.” so troubling. Can you not just be a good person to BE A GOOD PERSON? You have to consult with a higher power on what is good and bad?

    • Dee says:

+1 i hate to be judgy but it’s true. Almost everything she does is the antithesis of christianity. For someone who claimes to read the bible so much she sure doesn’t follow it….at all.

      • saras says:

Omg this klan is shameless! Honestly one of the most disgusting of the bunch who waffles between hoing, talking gross, and now how holy she is. Hahaha ok whatever you say. Delusional…

      • AnnaKist says:

And the lies. Let’s not forget all the lies…

    • tback says:

      Typical hypocritical religious bullsh*t

  3. Nancy says:

I think she believes what she is saying. Butt, she doesn’t live the life she portrays as her gospel. She does take the Lord’s name in vain. She went on Stern and spoke proudly and vulgarly about the not so biblical way she enjoys her sex life. She is intolerant and speaks to her mother as though she was a homie with much disrespect. She might want to reconsider her words. Obviously I can’t go on or this would be a novella, but Miss Khloe is delusional and does not practice what she is preaching. Bible as these sisters say when something is sacred in their minds.

    • Kate says:

Add adultery to the mix. If she wants to profess her faith, great, but maybe she could try, just a little bit, to live life with God in mind. “I am Second” is most decidedly lost on Ms Khloe.

    • Jwoolman says:

Just trying to follow the Sermon on the Mount would go a long way toward becoming a kinder, gentler Khloe. She really is awful to both strangers and family. Not Kim level awful, but she does damage other people’s relationships and is a wannabe Kris when it comes to control freakiness. I can understand why she loathes her mother, who used her from early childhood to cover up her affairs and later put a very young Khloe in charge of her youngest sisters, and abused her at least emotionally and certainly neglected her (didn’t even realize she wasn’t going to school any more). But Khloe needs to either stay away from the demon parent entirely or be nice to her (without being a doormat) if she continues to let Kris earn 10% from managing her.

      • Nancy says:

        100. It bothers me greatly, not just with her, but anyone who goes to church, posts scriptures and believe they’re spiritual or believe in God or a higher being, then live their lives in a materialistic, un Christ like manner. She is living a fool’s life, or simply is a hypocrite. If one reads the Bible, it is implied there will be many a priest, minister or a church regular standing helplessly on the streets when the Rapture occurs. Khloe has broken just about every commandment, and God forgives all, but she needs to study before she opens her mouth, because she seems to put her foot in it on a regular. Too heavy, right?

      • Dlo says:

I did not know Kris did that to her daughter, omg Satans Home girl is a true description on Kris, I truly feel bad for Kloe now

      • Jwoolman says:

Yes, all of Kris’s kids have been damaged, including Kim. I try to remember that while getting so exasperated with them…. They are broken people, each in their own way. Kourtney actually seems in the best emotional shape. As the oldest, she must have been the most aware of what her mother was doing. Kourtney lived with her dad at some point, as did Rob. Khloe was trapped as the live-in nanny…

Khloe did not take her parents’ divorce well. She was only five years old when it happened and was having so much trouble that they put her into therapy. Actually, I’m wondering about what she says about her father since she was so young at the time of the split. When she was older, she wasn’t living with him. Is she relaying what Kourtney and Rob told her? Or did she visit him on weekends before he got sick? Maybe that was it. It’s so hard to tell truth from fiction with Khloe. With Kim, it’s easier – if her mouth is moving or her fingers are typing, it probably is fiction…

The problem is that the next generation can be affected by the damage done to the first. Good luck, Nori and Saint. Kourtney is probably wise enough to protect her kids against her Demon Mother and although she does have relationship difficulties, I don’t sense a malicious streak or overriding ambition in her. When she’s made mistakes with Scott, it seems as though it’s more from ignorance about how such things work. I wish Kourtney would permanently move away from the camera, the others seem hopeless but she might have more of a chance away from the toxic center.

      • swak says:

@Jwoolman, since the split with Scott, Khourtney has been doing more pap walks and sexy shots of her rear. The children are also more and more being put out there for all to see. So I’m just wondering how much control she has on anything or this was her plan all along.

  4. taíss says:

She doesn’t believe in divorce but married Lamar just a few months after meeting him. (he was still kinda dating his ex). A normal person would really need to know the person they’re with, in order to envision a forever with them, a few months of dating isn’t enough.

She’s so vulgar, it really goes against Christianity or any religion. (I don’t mean to be judgemental)

    • Jwoolman says:

She married Lamar 4 weeks after meeting him. They got engaged TWO WEEKS after she met him (soon after another woman turned him down ROTFL’ing when he asked her after a similar length of time). On the show, she asked Demon Mother to pull together a wedding for broadcast in two weeks, which of course Demon Mother happily did with her own two little hands, cameras rolling all the time.

I doubt Khloe bothered to seek any spiritual guidance at any point before her marriage, certainly not before her engagement — she was too busy partying in front of the camera when she agreed to marry Lamar. She didn’t meet his kids until later, I don’t think they were at the wedding. His kids’ mother expressed some bafflement about it all – they had been together for many years, although he was away a lot. Apparently there was nothing obviously different about their in-and-out relationship that would have clued her in to the fact that that he was running around asking other women to marry him… They had three kids together, two surviving and one died as an infant.

  5. Greenieweenie says:

I don’t get why divorce requires belief. I could say, “I don’t believe in dropping out of university”–but so what? Why would I need to form a belief about that anyway? And what does my belief have to do with people/myself actually having to drop out of school for one reason or another?

I get where the church drummed up this belief. It’s based on an interpretation of Song of Solomon, in particular, as a metaphor for marriage. The bridegroom is Christ and the bride is the Church, so divorce represents a shattering of that relationship and that’s why it’s (perceived as) a sin. Ok. But it’s not like that metaphor is essential to Christianity. There are plenty of denominations who interpret differently.

Blah blah, all that to say, I think people say these weird things offhand–without ever considering where they came from and why–because they heard it repeatedly as a kid. By all means, don’t believe in divorce if you accept that metaphor and connect your personal marriage to it. But how much $ would you bet Khloe doesn’t know the first thing about it? Because if she did, she’d have to explain her views on premarital sex–which is also tied to that metaphor. A lot of these celebrity Christians, in particular, parrot these “beliefs” without even understanding where they come from and how that belief might be incongruous with other aspects of their lives. But hey, sure, Khloe is super spiritual.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Even the Bible makes exceptions for divorce in the case of infidelity. I think it’s idiotic to say you don’t believe in divorce. I didn’t want to be divorced or go into my first marriage intending to get divorced, but I absolutely “believe in” divorce as opposed to living a lie or with someone who is abusive.

      • Jwoolman says:

Even my devout Catholic mother, who definitely didn’t believe in divorce, had to get one to try (futilely) to get child support. She was ok with her church, she was in frequent consultation with a priest who was a canon lawyer (specializing in church law on marriage) who also helped counsel her on dealing with my whackadoodle dad and his equally whackadoodle family. Remarriage is inconsistent with that framework, but not actually divorce. My mother thought about getting an annulment at one point. Lucky us, she probably would have just married another loser…

      • Nancy says:

Agree GNAT. To divorce a person who mistreats you or as you say is unfaithful to their vows is not wrong to me. In fact, it seems more sinful to stay in the union under false pretense. Way back when, women took physical and mental abuse so as not to divorce and suffered greatly, often in silence…..and using children as an excuse to stay together is harmful to all if the marriage is a farce. God wants us to be happy, not tied to the whipping post.

  6. paolanqar says:

She is so ugly. The face she bought is truly atrocious and no glossy filter aimed to distract the eye can help that.
These people toss in religion and faith whenever they feel they are losing attention.
    ridicolous.

    • anne summers says:

      + 1
and those NAILS. omg how does she shower or type on a touchscreen phone… :/

  7. Josephine says:

It’s not what you say, it’s what you do. Like so many others who claim to be religious/spiritual, her actions belie that. I can’t imagine any God who would find her life virtuous, with meaning, or even the least bit acceptable. People like her need to spend less time and effort in claiming to be religious/moral and more time actually living a decent life.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Exactly. She can’t find her church home because she worships money, looks and fame. I don’t think that’s compatible with most religion.

      • Size Does Matter says:

I thought PMK had her own church. If Khloe doesn’t fit in there, I can’t imagine where she would.

      • Jwoolman says:

She’s also trying to find a place where she “fits in”, which to her seems to mean a religion that tells her that everything she does is ok. She doesn’t want to be truly challenged to become a better person (other than more successful in accumulating material goods). She was allowed to drift in childhood and adolescence, because neither parent nor her stepparent provided a framework (although her stepparent was the regular churchgoer, the kids apparently didn’t go along). Even if we reject aspects of our parents’ religious framework later and devise our own, it helps to have one and especially to get to the point of an adult understanding of that framework so you know what you are accepting or rejecting at an adult level.

    • Locke Lamora says:

I don’t know. Up until this year, she hasn’t done anything that horrible. They’re all famewhores, sure, but that doesn’t necessariliy mean they’re bad people. I don’t think her life is so incompatible with most religion. This year however, the way they usedLamar at his most vulnerable, was awful.

      • Jwoolman says:

Khloe always seriously interfered with other people’s relationships, especially her brother’s. She’s always been seriously disrespectful of anybody she didn’t like (including her mother) and many people she claimed to like. I think she’s always been raging inside, she just has started letting it out more on Twitter and such recently. You could see it on the show before that, though. I never understood why people thought she was the nice one, she always seemed nasty to me. I suspect that she thought up the vicious rumors and tricks they used against Kris Humphries once Kim disposed of him, Kim isn’t that clever.

And the way she has manipulated Lamar while claiming to care about him is just over the limit. She allowed him to be used as a plotline before and after. She kept him from friends and family as much as she could, never leaving his hospital room, but not out of loyalty. He had threatened to expose family secrets if they continued to use him for their plotlines soon before. It apparently was hearing about the most recent episode of their damned show, which still was using him against his clear wishes, that put him over the edge. Witnesses said he was ok before that phone call. He must have quite a lot to tell about Khloe. My guess is it’s about her drug use. I realize now that she must have been afraid of what he might say if she left him alone with others, until she realized his memory was impaired so she could relax. Kris and Kim trudged along for photo ops and as backup to guard Lamar.

Khloe is good with children, though, which shows there is hope for her. She isn’t as awful as Kim and Demon Mother… yet. So maybe it was just comparison with those two that made her seem benign in comparison. But the toxicity was always there.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think being very materialistic is incompatible with most religions, certainly with Christianity. That’s why I have such a problem with those TV evangelists who get rich off of religious poor people.

    • Sam says:

Part of the problem is that, as far as I go, a lot of people who claim to be “spiritual” have lost sight of what spirituality is actually supposed to be and do. For me, religion is not supposed to be about rubber-stamping your choices you’d make anyway. It’s supposed to challenge you and try to push you to do better than you’d do naturally. That’s the point. The genuinely right thing is rarely easy. A genuinely religious person has to actually stop and think about their behaviors or choices and say, “Is this in keeping with my beliefs and values?” I just don’t see Khloe (or any of them, frankly) having that level of insight.

      • ashipper says:

Well said, Sam. It has always seemed to me that they must see God as some kind of doting uncle that just nods and smiles at everything they do. What they really worship is money and as long as that keeps rolling in they won’t have any reason to question their lives.

    • Jwoolman says:

You don’t have to be perfect to be spiritual or religious. The churches would be empty if the pews and pulpits weren’t filled with sinners and the same is true for other types of organized religion. That’s not necessarily hypocrisy but just the normal human condition. We have ideals we don’t achieve very well.

But Khloe doesn’t seem to see any contradiction at all between her life and habits and the various religions she’s dabbled in, so I think she’s missing some important aspects of their frameworks. Not sure how exactly her idea of spirituality fits her everyday life. She needs to see that a real test is how she deals with someone on Twitter who has just said something that enrages her, like pointing out that her homemade pies obviously came from a bakery…. Then she has to ask herself why she lied in the first place, since truth is usually way up there in the virtues department in religious frameworks. Practical spirituality rather than theoretical.

Khloe seems to be looking for something as an ethical framework to hold onto, but hasn’t learned it’s not about the gods you worship, it’s about how you treat others. It’s easy to love your neighbor when your neighbor is nice and pleasant. The true challenge is when they are obnoxious.

  8. Patricia says:

How does rampant materialism fit in with her faith? I don’t get it.

I was actually watching their show yesterday, which I do about once every six months out of curiosity. I was watching one where they were on vacation. Kim and Khloe were both totally incapable of speaking normally due to their inflated lips. Even in the voiceovers it was obvious they were struggling to speak.

Does she think the lips God gave her were meant to be inflated to twice their original size? Does she think God intended her to be unable to pronounce half of her words in the name of “sexy fashion”? I just have to laugh. So much delusion.

    • Locke Lamora says:

“Does she think the lips God gave her were meant to be inflated to twice their original size? Does she think God intended her to be unable to pronounce half of her words in the name of “sexy fashion”? I just have to laugh. So much delusion.”

I don’t understand what this has to do with God.

      • Patricia says:

An obsession with changing your God-given body to the extreme doesn’t convey a very spiritual nature. When I see people with an insane amount of plastic surgery to the point where they can’t even speak I don’t exactly think “deeply spiritual individual”.
My own opinion on the matter.

      • Jwoolman says:

A counterexample, though, is Dolly Parton, who is a genuinely nice person and serious about her religious beliefs. She’s always been honest about all the plastic surgery, at least. So whatever pushes people to meddle so much with their bodies can’t be inconsistent with spirituality but rather can co-exist with it.

  9. Sam says:

I get what she’s trying to say, but it comes across badly. Usually when people say they don’t believe in divorce, they mean that they do not believe in it for the “selfish” reasons. And despite all her issues, I do believe she legitimately loved (or loves) Lamar. However, she doesn’t love Lamar enough to stand up to her family. Her family were the ones who spread horrible rumors about him, who edited the show in a way that made him look like a bad person, etc. And she went along with that when it went on, and then tried to make it about trying to “save” him. Please. They leaked stories about his condition and the lurid details of his situation at the brothel despite this man having children who could read that stuff. If she does love him, it’s a messed up kind of love that doesn’t overcome her need for publicity.

  10. HK9 says:

Firstly, if she believes in God so much why doesn’t she consult her before she opens mouth? Secondly, there’s been provision for divorce since Bible days so again, if you talked to God before you opened your mouth you would have known that too. Thirdly, I don’t care what kind of scriptures Lucifer’s Home Girl gives you every Christmas, if you don’t do what they say it simply means you’re a fan not a follower-get it straight.

  11. Kitten says:

I really love that tan dress. Anybody have a designer ID on that? Nevermind. It’s Balmain. I still really like it though.

  12. Murphy says:

At my core I don’t believe anything that comes out of her mouth.

  13. Jwoolman says:

Am I the only one who finds it creepy that she keeps reading her daily devotionals to her “glam crew” even though obviously they don’t like it? Hopefully she’s lying about that in true Kardashian fashion, and may have only done it once. Not nice to force your religion on other people, Khloe. You’re taking advantage of people who feel obliged to let you prattle on.

  14. Zuzus girl says:

She is an awful, ugly person on the inside. Period.

  15. Red32 says:

I’m convinced Kris Jenner has an ironclad prenup with Lucifer himself, but yeah ok. Religious. Sure.

  16. CF98 says:

More like she doesn’t believe in divorce because in the state of California if you are legally married 10 years you get lifetime support.

Why do you think Tom Cruise made sure his divorce from Nicole happened before that 10 year mark.

    • Caz says:

exactly. These people don’t do anything for others…only themselves. Superficial, shallow & self-serving. Every single article attributed to any of them is a carefully written, edited, re-written & targeted towards whatever selfish gain/impression they want to create. Their PR team must be enormous.

I don’t think they have 1/2 the $$$ they appear to. A PR team of this size & output would cost a heck of a lot of money. Nobody works for free.

I can’t get too upset or buy into anything they say….if you understand it from a PR perspective it’s all too obvious & strategic.

  17. Jayna says:

They ONLY go to church on holidays and set up their big photo-op attending on holidays. It’s all for show. They never do anything without a reason, a photo-op.

They stopped regularly going to the church mom founded many years ago once they became famous. One of the ministers gave an interview about Bruce when he went public about transitioning. In that interview, he said the clan never comes because they’re busy, but that Bruce (He was Bruce back then) still came every single Sunday alone.

  18. Bridget says:

No, you didn’t keep your vow. That’s not how it works. You either keep it and stay married, or break it and get divorced. There is no gray area in between.

Whether or not to divorce or marry is the business of those two people. But Khloe’s trying to have her cake and eat it too and it drives me crazy.

  19. iheartgossip says:

I am enjoying watching the downfall of the Koven. This one is beyond delusional.

  20. Tredd says:

I used to love this broad. I thought she was the only sane one in the bunch. WRONG.
If I see her holding her 6-viles-of-Radiesse lips out one more time, I’m going to lose my $hit.
