Brie Larson is in early talks to play Captain Marvel in a stand-alone film

People have been dreamcasting Captain Marvel for years. Captain Marvel is an air force pilot-turned-superhero when her DNA became fused with an alien’s DNA during an accident. She is beloved by Marvel fan-boys and fan-girls, and the character is seen by many as Marvel’s chance to get out of their He-Man Woman-Haters’ Club rut. Because of course they won’t do a stand-alone Black Widow movie. So Captain Marvel is getting a stand-alone film… at some point. The script is in development and Marvel is going through casting now. And according to the trade papers, they might have found their Captain Marvel: this year’s Best Actress Oscar winner, Brie Larson.

After winning the best actress Oscar for “Room,” Brie Larson has her sights on another marvelous role. Sources tell Variety Larson is in early talks to play Captain Marvel, one of Marvel’s most popular female superheroes, in an upcoming standalone film. It’s unknown where negotiations stand, but sources have told Variety that Larson is their first choice, and that she’s leaning toward playing the part.

Marvel had no comment on the story. No director is currently on board. Marvel, however, had always planned to have an actress lined up early, with the idea of possibly introducing her in one of its upcoming films before its “Captain Marvel” movie bows.

“Inside Out” scribe Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman are currently writing the script, which follows Carol Danvers, an air force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. The resulting alteration imbues her with the super powers of strength, energy project and flight. Kevin Feige is producing the pic.

[From Variety]

It’s too late for Captain Marvel to be introduced in Doctor Strange, although if they want to speed up these talks and cast Brie quickly, there will be time for her to make a cameo in Thor: Ragnarok. But that would imply that Marvel is super-excited to do a female-led superhero movie and… I’m not sure Kevin Feige is there. I get the feeling that the bros at Marvel are only interested in Captain Marvel because they’ve gotten so much well-deserved sh-t for being too bro-y. As for Brie’s casting in particular… I think she’s a good choice. Brie is making some interesting career moves, and I’m interested in seeing how her Kong: Skull Island gamble pays off.

I didn’t know who she was until Oscar night. I get her and Alison Brie mixed up simply because of the names.

Halle also won an Oscar and then put out that godawful Catwoman movie.

    Don’t do it Brie.

    • missmerry says:

I agree, I wish people would stop accepting money for these roles and just say no, that way maybe the films, writing, stories and characters in films would get better.

I’m so very over superhero junk, and I think her talent would be wasted in a superhero movie, because they’re never written that well…

    • Lisa says:

I don’t know. Having two female writers attached might turn this into something of a milestone in female led movies. Fingers crossed it’s good!

    • Birdix says:

Agreed–I still get her mixed up with Alicia Vikander.

      • OriginallyBlue says:

Me too. There was a picture of them cheesing with their Oscars and they looked like sisters. Unfortunately they both seem pretty forgettable.

      • BFDL says:

Oh yes Alicia is another one who could be standing next to me in a grocery checkout line and I would never know who she was.

Is Brie Larson young? Because she doesn’t look fresh faced. I thought she was in her mid-30’s.

      • Lisa says:

I loved Brie in the series The League and in 21 Jump street. I never pictured her as a dramatic actress, but Room was just amazing to me and both she and Jacob Tremblay are now some of my favourite actors. Whereas I have no time for Alicia, I’ll keep an eye out for anything Brie is in next.

  2. lilacflowers says:

Captain Marvel is the female James Bond as far as casting rumors go, but I do hope Brie’s attached. She would be fun. They could actually introduce Captain Marvel in a credit cameo for Guardians of the Galaxy II, which is just finishing filming and which comes out before Thor: Ragnorak.

Feige recently said that they are considering a Black Widow stand alone film although I’m not sure what kind of a contract Scarlett has. She’s done five MCU films already and the standard is six, although some have nine.

    • NUTBALLS says:

I think she’d be great in the role. I want to see a strong, athletic Brie kick some ass. I’m totally behind this possible casting. I liked Blunt in Sicario, but Brie would be a better choice for Marvel.

I’d watch a Black Widow movie too… opening night. Doubt it will happen tho’, if it hasn’t by now.

    • V4Real says:

I like Brie for Captain Marvel. And yes there have been talks of A Black Widow stand alone film.

On a different note. I love that blue dress Brie is wearing. She looks great in that.

    • byland says:

This old-school comic book nerd thinks Brie would be great. I think she’s actually extremely talented, so I’d love to see a Captain Marvel with some soul and personality in her eyes.

The two female writers makes me excited, too. Fingers crossed.

P.S. @NUTBALLS I’m with you there at Black Widow’s opening night. My favorite theater has super soft reclining seats, amazing food, assigned seating, and a hardcore enforced no cell phone ban. We can take my car.

      • NUTBALLS says:

byland, I’m in. We have a couple here in my small town that serve beer & wine, but I have to go to the big city to get food.

      • byland says:

Oh, NB, there’s a full service bar in house there.

Also, a ten minute drive away is my brother’s bar, so free drinks! And three different kinds of melted cheese on the menu.

We’ll have a grand (drunken) ol’ time. We can leave my car there and have Big Brother take us home. Gotta be responsible, after all.

    • serena says:

Yep, I read somewhere that the Black Widow movie was a certain thing ?

    • teacakes says:

I actually wish they were casting an older actress for this – someone in their 30s (I would die and go to heaven if Marvel cast Katee Sackhoff). Brie’s a good actress but I’m not sure about her for this role.

  3. Ashley says:

    I really wanted Emily Blunt.

    • Candy says:

      Yesssss!

    • Snazzy says:

      Ohhh I think she’d be a great superhero 🙂

    • V4Real says:

She would have been a good Black Widow but Scarlet is killing it in that role.

      • teacakes says:

yeah, Scarlett is a fantastic choice for Natasha, I don’t want to see anyone else as her in the MCU now. But it’s a real waste not to give her a solo movie (and hopefully get some Cap/Bucky in there). I loved their vibe in Winter Soldier.

    • Mia V. says:

      Emily Blunt would be amazing.

    • Starkiller says:

Blunt can’t do an American accent. Then again, I guess they could just make the character British, they’ve already done it once. Bit of a moot point, though, as Blunt has already blown Marvel off once. I don’t think she’s interested in doing superhero films.

  4. Tiffany says:

    She’s so tiny…..no.

  5. grace says:

    Meh

  6. sofie says:

Does Hollywood know how to make films other than superheroes anymore? Sick of all these films.

    • V4Real says:

What’s wrong with comic book films? Maybe some people prefer that over dramas. It’s a business and it’s room for all types of genre of films. Marvel studio is supposed to make superhero movies, what kind of films would you have them make…indies?

      • Marianne says:

        Exactly.

You don’t like comic book movies. That’s fine. don’t watch them. But plenty of people love them. There is different genres of movies out there for everyone to enjoy.

    • meme says:

same here. getting attacked for feeling this way is ridiculous.

  7. roxane says:

So Brie has Captain America, Alicia has Tomb Raider and Margot Robbie is in Tarzan will they win the box office or fail (I hope not). It’s a kind of box-office test for the newcomers.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Brie had Kong: Skull Island due in March

    • V4Real says:

Margot also has The Suicide Squad.

    • OriginallyBlue says:

I can see Tarzan going either way. People love the Tarzan story, but Margot and Alex have never had to carry a major film. People are super excited for SS and Captain Marvel won’t be for a while. The only one that probably won’t do that great is Lara Croft. When AV was announced as the character I had my doubts and they only intensified after a commenter mentioned that the new Lara Croft game that they are basing the movie is from her college days before the tomb raiding business, so it would be heavy into her backstory and probably not much action. If that is the route they go it sounds terribly boring and apparently the writers attached to it are not good.

  8. Marianne says:

    I think she’ll be great!

  9. anna says:

captain marvel looks cool. wearing clothes, no big boob big hair-show. i like.

  10. HH says:

Yes there’s contacts, wigs, and CGI… But is Hollywood short on blonde haired, blue eyed women? Haha. I guess I still have Jessica Alba as Sue Storm stuck in my head, and that was atrocious.

  11. lucy2 says:

I’ve seen so much speculation over the casting, and she was never one that anyone suggested, so I’m surprised. I do like her and it would be interesting to see her in such a different role.
I’m burnt out on superhero movies too, especially the ridiculous number of Marvel ones, but it would be nice to have a female-led one for a change.

  12. Bex says:

Isn’t she at least a decade too young for this though? I like Brie, but the character is a full Colonel so should be late 30s at the least. She’s supposed to have real gravitas. Would’ve been cool to see an older actress- RDJ was 43 when cast after all. Oh well, it’ll be interesting to see what she does with the role.

    • LannisterForever says:

      Charlize is the obvious choice.

      • KHLBHL says:

I would’ve liked Charlize and someone older too but I think Charlize wouldn’t want to commit to six to nine films over then next ten years. That’s way too much. I know she’s open to doing franchise films, but doing six movies is way more than popping up in Fast and Furious.

    • V4Real says:

I think they probably prefer them a bit younger. That way they can play the role for quite some time. Look at JLaw. She wasn’t even 25 yet they had her playing a much older woman in Joy.

      • Kate says:

Lawrence was playing younger than her age and within a year or two of her age for most of Joy. For less than a third of the film she was playing 10 years older. I still don’t get the fuss about that, male actors regularly age up 30-40 years in biopics and no one complains.

The real life Joy had her children young, did lots of menial jobs and then became a huge success by 35. The film was mostly focused on the years before that success, thus JLaw was the perfect age for the majority of the film.

    • InvaderTak says:

      Katee Sackhoff gets my vote.

      • TeamAwesome says:

She’s been my pick for this for a long time.

      • teacakes says:

        +1000000

Looks like a credible badass pilot and has played one in the past, is a fantastic actress, and it’s VERY easy to imagine her telling Captain America to take a seat. But sadly, this is one of those things that is probably too good to ever come true.

    • Prairiegirl says:

Agree, she’s too young. The character is a decorated officer and fighter pilot. USAF officers are, on average, 35 y.o. and hold an advanced degree. As well, the actress lacks both the gravitas and charisma the character requires. Pass.

Stats here, for those interested: http://www.afpc.af.mil/library/airforcepersonneldemographics.asp

      • V4Real says:

But what some of you are still forgetting is just because Brie is young (26,which is really not that bad) it doesn’t mean she will be playing that age in the movie. Like I said JLaw was about 24 when she did Joy and she was playing a much older woman. Even her character in SLPB was older but we know JLaw was about what 21 or 22.

      • Bex says:

True, but I didn’t feel like JLaw was remotely believable in those parts, even with the Oscar nods. I was being told the character was 40 while I was watching someone on screen with the face and presence of a much younger woman. Marvel have done a good job with casting before in the past though, so I’m open to being surprised. Right now it just feels like a bit of a wasted opportunity to me.

      • teacakes says:

@V4Real – yeah, and that Jlaw casting was wildly out of place and should never have happened. I hope this is not the example Marvel chooses to follow when it comes to casting.

  13. meme says:

Win an Oscar and sell out. Way to go Brie. Didn’t Hallie Berry do this and look at her career now..

    • V4Real says:

JLaw is doing pretty damn well with XMen.

And how is this a sell out? These people are called actors. Their job is to act. They are not committed to acting only in the types of films you want to see them in. This is the same actress that was in 21 Jump Street you know.

And Halle is still doing ok. She’s in the next Kingsman. She has also completed one film called Kidnap and she’s starting her next film with Michael Douglas. She’s at that age where roles start to slow down for women actresses esp, Black actresses.

      • meme says:

Halle is still doing OK? Seriously? Her career is in the toilet.

      • V4Real says:

Her career is no more in the toilet than Nicole Kidman, what has she done lately?

And like I said they are both at that age when female actresses career starts to decline.

    • Samtha says:

You can’t really compare the current Marvel movies to Catwoman. Forget not being in the same league; they’re in another galaxy.

    • KHLBHL says:

I’m sorry that you think this is selling out. There are people out there who love these movies and grew up reading the comic books and identifying with the characters. Maybe Brie could be one of those people. I know I am one of them. This is just pure fun, pure entertainment. Nothing wrong with enjoying a few popcorn flicks here and there. It does disappoint me that it seems this is all Hollywood is producing nowadays, and I like my “good” movies just as much as anyone else, but it also has been a long time coming for us comic book fans to see “better” comic book movies featuring beloved characters that are meaningful to us. Captain Marvel is a badass soldier who kicks butt in a male-dominated field. She can be a role model for many young people. Who wouldn’t want to be a role model and adored by millions all over the world? This is just a natural progression for someone with a career like Brie’s. She already has the respect and accolades, so why not enjoy herself a little?

      • meme says:

I’m tired of comic book movies. there are too many of them and Hollywood has become lazy. no actor has ever won an award for being in a comic book movie. they just make everyone rich.

      • V4Real says:

And how many actors have won an award for action movies. Do you think they are going to stop doing movies just because they didn’t win an award…really? Not every actor is going to win an award no matter what kind of films they are in. How many Oscars have Gary Oldman won? And I don’t think no one is in the business because they want to remain poor.

    • CornyBlue says:

Its not like indies pay money or anything. Even A list stars make peanuts on those.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Other Oscar winners in the MCU are: Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchette, Tilda Swinton, Natalie Portman, Marisa Tomei, William Hurt, Jeff Bridges, Tommy Lee Jones, Djimon Housou, and Anthony Hopkins. Halle is not the standard.

  14. Mia4s says:

Sigh…too young. There were so many better choices.

  15. Samtha says:

She’s an unusual choice. I still really want Yvonne Strahovski or Katheryn Winnick for the role, but Marvel has done a great job so far of casting people you might not expect and hitting it out of the park.

  16. CK says:

Eh, I like Brie, but she seems a bit too young (and skinny) for the part (imo). She will probably put on some muscle for the role, but… I still don’t buy her as a credible credible Carol Danvers. Captain Marvel has a bit more gravitas.

  17. CornyBlue says:

No NO NOOOOOO. Cast an older woman for a role for a older woman. Cast Emily Blunt or Charlize or Rebecca Ferguson.

    • CK says:

I’m surprised that Charlize isn’t #1 on the list. It would be the closest thing to a return of Furiosa and everyone wants that.

  18. Rocío says:

Natalie Dormer was my choice but I think Brie will do an excellent work!

  19. Brittney B. says:

“It’s too late for Captain Marvel to be introduced in Doctor Strange, although if they want to speed up these talks and cast Brie quickly, there will be time for her to make a cameo in Thor: Ragnarok.”

Not necessarily… they could introduce her after the Doctor Strange credits.

I love Brie, but I wish Ruth Negga were in the running for it. That would be spectacular. Or Lupita, maybe? Another Oscar winner who is making blockbusters now.

    • Lurker says:

Oh man, Brittney, I think Ruth Negga should be in everything! She’s great.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Looking forward to seeing her in Loving. Although she has already played Reina on Agents of SHIELD. Not sure the MCU would use an actor for another character

      • Brittney B. says:

Loving looks AMAZING. Yes, cast her in everything please!!

I totally forgot she was in another Marvel project, though… she was one of my favorite characters, too! Tsk tsk. Some of the SHIELD cast members have called out Marvel for not keeping the show in the same canon as the films, though. So I wouldn’t be *that* surprised if they re-used actors for other roles. Especially when she was pretty unrecognizable for her most memorable scenes.

  20. Sarah says:

This isn’t totally relevant but if Brie Larson is accepted as 26, Margot Robbie sure as hell is fine to be accepted as 25. Brie looks no different age wise to Robbie in my eyes

    • Brittney B. says:

… I mean, one of the reasons Brie’s age is “accepted” is that she’s been in the public eye for most of her life.

Wait, never mind. Just realized Robbie was a teen actress in Australia.

In any case, I really hate the whole “she’s lying about her age!” smear. Women just can’t win in Hollywood. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a male celebrity challenged about his age… and that’s no surprise, because it doesn’t matter.

    • Kate says:

Brie was a child actress, she had a whole teen pop star phase…her age has been the same throughout. She could possibly be a year or two older than she says, but that’s it.

      • Sarah says:

Haha Robbie got a role as a 17 year old but because it’s in a “far away” place it somehow makes it fair game. Add to that one single unresearched article that misaged her like 10 years ago and now we have these icky rumours

  21. Kimberly says:

Based on the comments I’ve seen here I agree that these women who were mentioned would be fantastic for the role.

    -Emily Blunt
    -Charlize Theron
    -Katheryn Winnick
    -Rebecca Ferguson
    -Yvonne Strahovski

Brie is a very good actress but she’s too young for a role like this.
Plus Captain Marvel seems like a more mature and tough woman.

But knowing how Hollywood operates, they would obviously choose the youngest actress they could find. So annoying. :-l

  22. Kimberly says:

Tried editing my comment above but it failed so I am posting it again with some additional changes………………..

Based on the comments I’ve seen here I agree that these women who were mentioned would be fantastic for the role.

    – Charlize Theron
(great actress & I love that she’s tall. I always picture CM as a tall women.
She is fantastic in both action and drama and did a phenomenal job as Furiosa in Mad Max. )

    – Emily Blunt
(another stand out actress who does great in both action & drama. Also comedy) Sicario and Edge of Tomorrow are 2 examples of her acting ability in action/ drama roles.

    – Katheryn Winnick
(Love seeing her in the Vikings series)

    – Rebecca Ferguson
(she was great the the latest MI movie with Tom Cruise)

    – Yvonne Strahovski
LOVED her in the NBC action/comedy series Chuck. Miss that show 🙁

With that being said, Brie is a very good actress but she’s too young for a role like this.
Captain Marvel seems like a more mature and tough woman.
It is also worth mentioning that ALL these women (with the exception of Charlize) are in their 30’s.
I think any one these actresses I mentioned above can perfectly embody these few traits and even the physical aspects associated with the character.

But knowing how Hollywood operates, they would obviously choose the youngest actress they could find. So annoying. :-l

  23. OriginallyBlue says:

We’ll see. I know people think Brie is too young, but this movie won’t be made for another couple years. I was reading an article that gave a timeline for these Marvel movies releases and Captain Marvel probably won’t be coming out until 2019, so filming in 2018, which would make Brie 28. That might still be too young, but this is Hollywood. They are not going to cast a 40 year old woman and have her commit to a 3-6 picture deal for movies that come out every couple years.

  24. Anne de Vries says:

She’s way too freakin’ YOUNG. Carol Danvers is a Colonel in the Air Force. She is at least in her late 30s and this would be a GREAT role for an actress in that actual age range.

  25. DC says:

Nevermind. Please delete so my picture doesn’t show up. Thank you.

  26. Cheyenne says:

She’s too young. Look at the character and the requirements for the character. Charlize Theron is the obvious choice. She’s so perfect for the role it’s ridiculous. After Mad Max, how can you not go with her? Drives me crazy when people say she’s too old when the character is supposed to be in a career position that requires years of experience, not a 20-something. No one said anything about Robert Downey Jr. being too old and he’s older than Charlize. Brie is good, but too young and would only get it because she just won the Oscar. So sick of Hollywood.

  27. Veronica says:

A franchise would be a great way to bolster her name recognition, so I can see why it’s alluring. To be honest, I feel like she’s bordering into the territory of being oversold before she really is on her feet fame-wise if her PR team isn’t careful. They keep pushing her as the next J. Law, but while she has the acting chops, she’s yet to really make a strong impression on me as a media personality. And that’s most of the game, yeah?
