Alicia Vikander on Angelina Jolie: ‘That is a woman I would love to meet’

Back in April, Alicia Vikander was cast as the new Lara Croft in a planned reboot of the franchise. In 2001 and 2003, Angelina Jolie starred as Lara Croft in two films, and then she walked away from the franchise… although there was talk over the years of getting Jolie to do a third film. This franchise reboot will be based off of the rebooted video game, where we see Lara Croft’s earlier days and her start as a tomb raider. The thing is… Alicia Vikander is 27 years old, and Angelina was 25 when she was cast as Lara. But whatever, we’re getting a new, less busty Tomb Raider and Hollywood will see if Vikander can carry a big action franchise. In the meantime, Alicia would really love to meet Angelina.

In a way, Angelina Jolie paved the way for Alicia Vikander. E! News’ Maria Menounos caught up with the 27-year-old actress Monday at the Las Vegas premiere of her new movie, Jason Bourne, and asked her how it feels to be taking over the role Jolie made famous 15 years ago.

“That is a woman I would love to meet,” Vikander said of Jolie, a fellow Oscar winner who starred in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and its sequel, 2003’s Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. “She made an icon of that character, of course.” Vikander said she is a longtime fan of Jolie’s work, both in front of and behind the camera. “She’s quite an incredible woman,” she raved of the actress, director and writer. “I would love to meet her.”

However, Vikander won’t be calling Jolie for advice as she prepares to play the video game character.

“What we’re doing is something quite different since they rebooted the game in 2013. It’s a whole new take,” she explained to Menounos. “We’re doing a film of that game.”

[From E! News]

I think Vikander is being honest about how she would love to meet Angelina, but it does get weird when Menounos asks her specifically if she’ll call Angelina for any kind of advice. I get that Vikander probably wants everyone to view this reboot as a fresh start, but she’s obviously going to get these Jolie questions for many months/years to come. It wouldn’t hurt for Vikander and Jolie to reach out to each other before then. Especially since I doubt Jolie cares about the franchise that much anymore? I think at one point, she probably would have done a third film, but she’s been done with the franchise for years.

To be fair to Vikander, I wouldn’t know how to reach out to Angelina Jolie. I’d probably feel as though I was intruding by calling her up while she has the UN General on the other line.

Worst pick for a remake. She has no charisma, no on screen presence. Literally a wet towel.

    • celine says:

I totally agree. This girl is just a blob on screen. No presence or seemingly interesting personality. Just there.

  3. Alex says:

I mean yea Alicia probably wants to (smartly) make it clear that they are doing something different. And maybe she wants to meet AJ for many other reasons aside from TR

The Lara Croft movies weren’t big hits. I doubt these will be either.

    • V4Real says:

      They did ok.

BTW I would love to meet her too. I saw her in person once but never met her.

Yes. I really don’t understand why they are trying to reboot it. Does it ever work? It just seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

  5. Ana says:

I dont think Angelina wants to meet you Alicia.

  6. OriginallyBlue says:

When it was announced I thought the movie was out next year, but apparently it’s been pushed back to 2018? She had another movie get pushed back to 2017 a week and a half before it was due for release.

  7. Little Darling says:

To call Angelina to ask for advice on how to play a reboot of the character Lara Croft is such a silly question. It’s Lara Croft. I hope they train her physically well. I want to see her ripped and ready to kick it.

Even then, I still might be bored.

Vikander is sporting a British accent here. In some other interviews she forgets about it.
Pretty weird, especially since she changed her story from forecasting her own glorious Oscar season to never believing she would work outside Sweden.

    • Kiki says:

Yeah, it is unusual that she would be that right? And people attack me because I think she is a fake and full of it. Ah well.

    • sauvage says:

To be fair to Vikander, English is not her first language, and accents tend to change a
Ccording to surroundings or even mood. I sound like a very posh Oxbridge Britisher when I’m nervous. As I ease into the conversation, my accent becomes somewhat neutral and difficult to pin. Also, my BF is American, and while my accent clearly leans more towards British, I use a lot of American expressions (even though I will throw in the occasional “bloody”, just for shits and giggles).

Did Jolie really make the role of Lara Croft famous? More the other way round, I’d have thought…

  10. Vero says:

Lara Croft is a mix of intense femininity and toughness. That’s how I see her, she has an edge at least how Jolie made her be. I don’t understand the casting of miss V. in this, another forced casting to push her to the top.

  11. Twink says:

Some people saying she’s like a wet towel up here, Hmmm, she stole every scene in The Danish Girls and Ex Machina, she’s amazing, she has IT.

    • Roxane says:

Twink@Exactly, I don’ find her extremely beautiful like Angelina Jolie, but she’s better actress and she’s usuallly the best parts in her films. She has IT.

  12. Trixie says:

Do people dislike Vikander because she’s dating Fassbender and/or she is/was confident about her career and Oscar contention last year? Because she was fantastic in Ex Machina. She’s a good actress so being a bad actress that is randomly successful (like many other actresses) can’t be the reason people dislike her.

    • Roxane says:

Trixie@ I think the “normal” detractors find her overrated wich is totally fine, but Vikander has a weird tiny hate-base that you can link with her dating Fassbender.

  13. Cat87 says:

I love the Tomb Raider reboot games, it’s awesome. The voice actress did an awesome job and Lara look like an normal athletic woman.

Vikander isnt a bad actress, in fact a feel her acting skills maybe to heavy handed. But in another interview Vikander said this new Tomb Raider movie will follow closely to the second game. The second game was amazing but I hope they just don’t steal straight from it completely.

Reading in game forums, some feel Vikander is miscast, her body lacks sex appeal and believability to be Lara. I don’t disagree but 2017 isn’t here and most actors have to pysically train for an action movie role.

For Fassbender, honestly I am not excited for his Assassin Creed movie. He is a favorite but hI’m as a male leading role is so damn inconsistent of being successful for a U.S audience.
