Justin Bieber turned down $5 million to perform at an RNC-adjacent event

Did Justin Bieber ever get around to becoming an American citizen? According to the internet, no. He’s still a Canadian citizen, living in the US on a visa. So it’s strange to me that the current anti-immigrant Republican Party would have invited a Canadian to perform at an event close to the Republican National Convention. But apparently it happened – Bieber was offered $5 million for a short set at an event associated with last week’s RNC, but after consulting with his super-Democrat manager and LeBron James, Bieber decided to say no. This is the most random story.

Justin Bieber got a $5 million offer to perform at a Republican event during the GOP Convention, but turned it down after his manager considered quitting and LeBron James urged him to reject it … sources tell TMZ. Sources connected with CAA — the talent agency which reps Bieber and received the offer — tell us a promoter contacted Justin’s people with the offer, saying he would perform for 45 minutes at a venue near Quicken Loans Arena, where the RNC was held. We’re told the promoter assured Justin’s people the event was “not political” and Justin would not be endorsing Trump or any GOP policies.

According to the contract, the $5 million was bankrolled by GOP donors. The money was to be paid “up front” — before Justin even arrived. The donors would also cover production expenses. It represented the biggest single payday ever for Justin. Or, for that matter, just about any other singer, and he seriously considered doing it … partly because he’s Canadian and didn’t have a dog in the fight and partly because of the money.

Manager Scooter Braun, a big Hillary Clinton supporter who even held a fundraiser for her at his L.A. home, had big problems with the offer … as did CAA. Scooter and CAA felt, regardless of the representations, this was “100 percent political.” We’re told Scooter wasn’t heavy-handed at first, and talked to Justin about putting Black Lives Matter banners up in the venue. We’re told Braun was told he could not display BLM banners, but the donors would accept banners that read “All Lives Matter.” The donors also made it clear … Justin could say nothing disparaging about Trump or the GOP.

We’re told Scooter told Justin it was up to him if he wanted to do the show, but he said he couldn’t continue to represent the singer if he did, out of principle. Scooter felt the GOP was using Bieber as its tool.

Our sources say the promoter told Scooter … LeBron James himself was also going to attend an event in Cleveland, welcoming the GOP without taking a political stand. The sources tell us Justin’s people got in touch with LeBron’s people, and they were told LeBron would actually not be in Cleveland for the convention and urged Justin not to go as well. On top of all that, we’re told Justin’s band, comprised entirely of African-Americans, did not want to do the show. In the end, Justin turned the offer down.

I like that Scooter Braun was like “do what you want but if you do it, we’re done.” So Godfather! Braun really is a big Democrat too, and he was an early Hillary Clinton supporter. The fundraiser he held for Hillary was one of her biggest fundraisers ever.

Oh, and even LeBron James is like, “Bruh, don’t even.” And what is this group? They’re well-financed Justin Bieber fans and Republicans who desperately wanted to mingle with a celebrity who wasn’t Scott Baio, maybe?

Ugh, I didn’t want to ever wake up and think, you go, Justin Bieber, but here we are…

This might be the first thing he’s done that I find respectable. And because of that I now hate the RNC even more.

      AMEN!
I am a Canadian, but I would really like to see celebrities encourage voting everywhere. Take pictures outside of polling stations, encouraging participation beforehand, that sort of thing. Be the example that they know they are, whatever they may say about not being role models or whatever.

This is supposed to be under Tallia’s comment below, but can’t seem to get rid to it.

  3. Tallia says:

I wish celebrities would encourage people to VOTE and leave it at that.

I wish people were encouraged to register. So many people don’t realize they have to register weeks before the Nov 8th election or any election. This needs to be emphasized.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Justin. It had to be that MTV documentary he did…. in one scene he smart-mouthed his mom and sulked until Scooter Braun told him to apologize and only then did he apologize. My nieces are like that with their mom too. They never think they’re wrong till you point it out to them as a third party. it made me think that the boy needs a little more guidance.
Scooter gets a lot of shit on his behalf but I believe he genuinely loves Justin and wants him to make the right choices on his own.
You can still turn it around Biebs; stop egging people’s houses, stop spray-painting walls, stop saying the N word too and maybe listen to your mom

My takeaway is that this twenty something year old who spends most of his time in the US, dated a girl with Mexican ancestry, works in an industry filled with openly LGBT and spends most of his leisure time with black guys, really didnt think he has a dog in the fight. He had to have his arm twisted to turn the offer down? What the hell is wrong with him?

    • vauvert says:

Not only that, but as a fellow Canadian, who obviously cannot vote in the US election, I’d say we do have a dog in this fight – although a Trump supporter was snarking yesterday that all the foreigners here shouldn’t have an opinion…
But guess what, we do. The US is Canada’s biggest trading partner; we share the largest undefended border in the world. What the US does affects us, big time. So I shudder to think what a nightmare it would be for everyone if that unqualified, racist idiot wins.

EXACTLY Naya… like WTF is commendable about essentially getting shamed and shunned by your inner men to do the Right thing??!

  6. Tiffany says:

No, Scooter Braun turned down 5 million dollars to perform at the RNC event.

Is it me or does he have an extremely small head?

  8. susiecue says:

He looks so sketch in that top photo. Not like his old self at all. If I saw him outside a gas station or something, I would be on major creeper patrol. Shudder.

Is the apocalypse imminent? This make me like him a little.
