Suicide Squad’s reviews are so bad, fanboys want to shut down Rotten Tomatoes

SS3

I guess I didn’t realize that there was an embargo on Suicide Squad reviews until this week. I actually believed the hype about the film without realizing that the hype was being created and bought by Warner Bros. Well, now that critics finally get to talk about the film, suddenly there’s a totally different story. Critics have been universally panning the film. There doesn’t even seem to be any delight in taking down the film, probably because the film is being called overwhelming nihilistic, gun-worshipping, misogynistic and more. Richard Lawson at Vanity Fair writes:

Suicide Squad is bad. Not fun bad. Not redeemable bad. Not the kind of bad that is the unfortunate result of artists honorably striving for something ambitious and falling short. Suicide Squad is just bad. It’s ugly and boring, a toxic combination that means the film’s highly fetishized violence doesn’t even have the exciting tingle of the wicked or the taboo. (Oh, how the movie wants to be both of those things.) It’s simply a dull chore steeped in flaccid machismo, a shapeless, poorly edited trudge that adds some mildly appalling sexism and even a soupçon of racism to its abundant, hideously timed gun worship. But, perhaps worst of all, Suicide Squad is ultimately too shoddy and forgettable to even register as revolting. At least revolting would have been something.

[From Vanity Fair]

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The reviews are terrible across the board. The reviews are so bad that now there is a backlash against film critics! Suicide Squad currently sits at 34% at Rotten Tomatoes, which, let me be clear, is just an aggregate of the top film critics’ reviews. Rotten Tomatoes isn’t to blame for the terrible movie OR the terrible reviews. Still, the reviews are so bad that all of the DC fanboys have to blame someone, so they’re going after Rotten Tomatoes.

Some DC Comics faithful aren’t pleased with the poor reviews Suicide Squad has been receiving … and they are blaming Rotten Tomatoes, a site which famously aggregates reviews into a Tomatometer score, but does not review films itself. Currently, Suicide Squad sits at 35 percent. Neither of Warner Bros.’ two previous entries in the DC Extended Universe have been certified fresh, with 2013’s Man of Steel sitting at 56 percent and March’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice pulling the lowest of them all with 27 percent.

The Change.org petition, made by a fan who says he lives in Egypt, argues Rotten Tomatoes should be shut down because its critics “always give The DC Extended Universe movies unjust Bad Reviews,” and that this affects people’s opinions, even if the films are “great.”

As of Tuesday night, more than 5,000 people had signed the petition, but plenty of comments have questioned the validity of trying to shut down Rotten Tomatoes, considering the site does not review films. The petition organizer shared a statement to address those criticisms on Tuesday, saying that he understands the site will not be shut down. Rather, he hopes the petition will send a message to critics that a lot of people disagree with their reviews,” adding the petition is just “a way to express our anger.”

Ironically, Warner Bros. has a history with Rotten Tomatoes. It — along with DC Entertainment — falls under the Time Warner corporate umbrella. Until earlier this year, Rotten Tomatoes a property of Warner Bros. Entertainment, until it was sold to Fandango.

[From THR]

It’s been said before, but people have too much time on their hands. We need to create more jobs. If you’re mad at Rotten Tomatoes BECAUSE OF MATH, you need to reexamine your life and your priorities.

  1. Neelyo says:

Last minute reshoots? August release date? Those are almost always guarantees a movie will suck.

I hope they don’t blame Robbie for the mess.

    • Jegede says:

Actually August release dates have proven to be prime scheduling for blockbusters in the past few years.

      • Lurker says:

Yeah, it used to be a graveyard, but now it’s part of summer blockbuster season. Since Guardians of the Galaxy, I think.

    • mom2two says:

From the reviews I’ve read, they’ve been praising her performance. Critics are saying Leto’s role is surprisingly small, that what you’ve seen in previews and commercials is basically all his scenes.

No matter what, I think this film has a good opening weekend.

      • Locke Lamora says:

Some of them praise Margot ( although I read some that say her acting is over the top) but pretty much all agree that the portrayal of Harley is very problematic. They say Leto and Cara were very underwhelming and most barely mention other actors. The only ones who get consistent praise are Will and Viola.

      • FingerBinger says:

It will have a good opening weekend. However these films do good because of repeat business. The real test comes in the weeks ahead. Will fans see it more than once? Will they recommend it? If it’s as bad as the critics say none of that will happen.

      • Nicole says:

I’ve seen it twice now (back to back premiere and screening) and yes Robbie was good and Will and Viola had the strongest performances. Like I suspected Leto had a small and underwhelming part and Cara cannot act her way out of a paper bag and her role was sizable towards the end.
And yes Harley was written pretty terribly not Robbie’s fault at all.

      • MC2 says:

When I saw a commercial with every character except the Joker I realized that it really sucked. I think they cut most of Leto’s scenes after people didn’t respond well to his Joker. He was supposed to be the big thing in this and Robbie has stolen (rightfully so) the spotlight.

      • amunet ma'at says:

        MC2
Joker was always meant to be a small role. The Suicide Squad is made up of B-list and C-list, and even D-list villains because they are expendable and can die at any moment and do. Fans were actually upset they would even feature the Joker. The Squad is like a revolving door of the lesser known, which does not fit the Joker’s profile. The point of the comics is that anyone can die at any time and there is zero fear that the joker will die. I do think that he was meant to be more of a presence to test out people’s reaction but who knows.

    • Megan says:

Didn’t we always know this was going to be a mess?

      • saltandpepper says:

Agree. It’s still going to make a lot of money though, despite what the critics say. But maybe not quite as much as the producers had hoped. Lots of comments have been doing the rounds for weeks that the trailers capture the best parts of the movie. And why is it suddenly news that it’s sexist, judging by Robbie’s outfit/s alone in all the trailers?

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Exactly? I’ve yet to enjoy a DC film and even the trailer for the new Justice League made me sigh a heavy long groan.

      • Lurker says:

It always seemed that it might be a mess, but I think a lot of people were hoping / expecting it to be fantastic. I recall a lot of DC fanboys saying “just wait for SS” after BvS was so godawful,

      • MP says:

        @s&p
I read a lot of reviews yesterday so I can’t remember which one it was that said “it has more shots of Robbie’s @$$ than of some of the supporting characters”
I guess the sexism in it is even worse than the trailer predicted.

    • jinni says:

Robbie and Smith appear to have the biggest parts in this movie so the blame will go on them.

      • Arlene says:

No it won’t; they and Viola Davis are the best things in the movie. The film is a structural mess, odd pacing, some horrible CGI and a miscast Cara Delevinge. But Smith and Robbie did what they could with what they were given, and Viola is the scariest thing in the entire movie.

      • jinni says:

        @Arlene:

Well the media typically blames the most well known actors for a movie being a bomb even when it’s the director’s fault, so that’s why I think they’ll be getting the brunt of the blame.

      • Naya says:

The critics like Will, Viola and Robbie. They are also doing all the heavy lifting marketing wise. But yeah, if this really bombs the studio will pin it on them. Cavill has had two passes now. Batfleck was rewarded with a writing director star position and dont get me started on Zack Snyder. If Reincarnation exists, I hope I come back as a white man in Hollywood.

      • Lena says:

WasBen Affleck blamed for batman vs superman?

      • Algernon says:

        @ Jinni

But everyone knows there are massive problems behind the scenes at Warner Bros, especially with DC movies. The blame will go on the company who keeps getting this wrong, with some sprinkled on David Ayer, who is known for making overly macho gun worshipping movies with sloppy editing. Suicide Squad has all the earmarks of a bad David Ayer movie. I haven’t read any reviews blaming the actors. Everyone is complaining about the writing, directing, and editing, with shade being thrown on the studio for once again blowing it with what should be a sure fire comic book movie hit.

    • Naya says:

I think the reshoots were evidence of Warner Bros tampering. Ayers is a good director and he tends to do darker themed films. When Superman Vs Batfleck bombed with critics, the studio probably panicked and sent over their best meddlers nad that never ends well.

      • Mia4S says:

That was definitely my impression too. I really don’t think “funny” was what the filmmaker was going for. Yikes.

Well if anyone wants to see a good blockbuster this weekend I can recommend Star Trek Beyond. Very funny, good action, quite sweet actually.

      • littlemissnaughty says:

Absolutely. End of Watch is incredible and while Street Kings and Harsh Times weren’t perfect, they definitely show what he can do. I remember the crazy difference in tone between the first teaser and the subsequent trailers. I don’t know if I’ll watch the movie but if I do, I have NO clue what to expect from those. You have a problem if you can’t decide on a tone.

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Yeah once I heard all the reports of the studio freaking out and trying to make SS ‘funnier’ I knew we’d have some Fantastic 4 Level of tampering and plot jumping.

Too many cooks in the kitchen.

      • mom2two says:

@Mia4S I saw Star Trek Beyond this past weekend and I agree with you. I thought it was a really good and entertaining movie. I hope Simon Pegg is involved in writing more of them!

      • noway says:

Okay, Batman vs Superman wasn’t good, but it certainly wasn’t the worst film I have seen. Certainly, not as bad as the critics said it was. Just kind of mediocre, same with Man of Steel too. My problem with all of these action flicks is they are a bit too long and kind of drown you in the Action. I think some critics it’s an expectation of a great movie and then it is just kind of okay and then it makes them go off on how bad it was. Not Rotten Tomatoes fault, but I can see some of the fans points with the reviewers. Ghostbusters I saw and it was okay, but not the praise it got by the reviewers, and Jason Borne is definitely too long and drowning in inane action, but it originally got some pretty good reviews. Now it is probably more accurate, but not when it opened it was Fresh as far as Rotten Tomatoes was concerned. Still not Rotten Tomatoes fault, but the reviewers are interesting.

      • Jay (the Canadian one) says:

As the story goes the criticism when BvS launched was that it was too depressing but SS looked like it hit the right balance of fun in the trailers, except the trailers were deceptive and every joke in the movie was in the trailers. The movie itself was darker and serious on average. Seeing the audience respond to the humour in the trailers, the execs panicked and had reshoots done to make it funnier.

      • Veronica says:

I think they were trying to reproduce the Marvel formula last minute ideas of just rolling with the black humor off the original. I’m sure no executive is going to take responsibility for it, either, when there are women and minorities on which to levy the blame.

    • Merritt says:

The little praise for the film seems to be for Margot and Viola’s performances.

    • SM says:

Somehow I do not find that all that surprising. And DC needs to work with their actors on PR strategy and film promotion. None of the trailers got me excited. Mixed with all the crap Jared was pulling for what it already feels like a year about his method Joker act on set I DO NOT want to see it anymore at all. It’s hard to see the brilliance of the performance though that crap he continues to push (last time on Jimmy Fallon just a couple of days ago bringing a snake as a present from the Joker). But it’s not only Jared. Before that I saw a few interviews of Batffleck and Cavil promoting Batman versus Superman and it looks like they would rather get an enema than be in one room. I felt uncomfortable just watching them try interact. And Snyder thinking he is some master visionary/philosopher. It’s comics, not fucking Nietzsche. It seems they can’t find a balance between smart and intelligent storytelling and the entertaining/visual part of the comics.

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Ugh, Jared Leto wants praise for his portrayal of The Joker so bag you almost want to pay him on his head and tell him to calm the hell down. Dude is doing the MOST between how he treated his fellow actors to all the cringy interviews.

    • Helen says:

One of the reasons that the movie is so bad is because it was *rushed* to meet an August release date, which is a big blockbuster month. So although I agree with your reshoots comment, the August release date comment is completely off base.

  2. Lola says:

I wonder, did all of those reshoots make the movie better or worse in the end?

    • Kate says:

Do reshoots every really improve a movie? Or just put neon bandaid on the broken film?

      • BendyWindy says:

World War Z was a great film and it had reshoots.

      • Lurker says:

It’s a good question; I have no idea. I think in some cases, it spells trouble, but I know that Marvel always schedule reshoots as standard in all their films. They say that it helps with tightening up a film, emphasising different stuff, improving characterisation, that kind of thing. I can see that being the case, because they shoot in a loose way – it’s filmmaking by committee, which always sounds like a terrible idea, but it works so well for them.

    • Roxane says:

Then the same thing could happen with Rogue One.

    • Mia4S says:

I’ve heard the word “disjointed” thrown around which makes me think they did more harm than good.

I love love LOVE that it’s now up to Wonder Woman to save the DC Universe. I think she’ll do it. Marvel dragged their heels for years (and years and years) on a female superhero so all is forgiven WB if Wonder Woman turns out to be your great one!

      • jinni says:

Nothing will save the DC verse because the people behind it suck. They need to change the guard in WB with this verse.

      • LAK says:

        What Jinni said.

DC needs it’s own Kevin Fiege. Too bad Marvel already poached him from Fox.

      • Locke Lamora says:

I’m afraid for Wonder Woman because, while the trailer looks good, Gal is an appaling actress.
DC should embrace their darkness ala Dark Knight and stop trying to be Marvel with the jokes.

      • Wren says:

I was wondering just who is behind the DC movies and why they seem to be so poorly done. It’s not lack of money, that’s for sure. Marvel can fart out whatever and people love it, why can’t DC? Why is it all bad editing, the Batfleck (because face it, that’s all you heard about from that movie), and dark but not exciting?

Anyway, I’m hoping WW does well because, duh, Wonder Woman, but I’m not holding my breath.

      • Valois says:

I really enjoyed the trailer, but Zack Snyder’s still involved in it (he has a writing credit) and I feel like Snyder’s great at giving us awesome trailers for movies that end up being awful or average.
I really want to like WW, but I’m not sure the final product will be something I’ll like.

      • LAK says:

Wren: Marvel have only recently perfected the formula. They tried for decades and failed. To extent that they sold their properties to other studios eg SPIDERMAN, FANTASTIC FOUR etc.

And for decades superhero films were no good or were a joke. Warner Bros were the first to crack the code with SUPERMAN (1978), and didn’t succeed with another property until 1989’s BATMAN.

Marvel succeeded after poaching Kevin Fiege from Universal where he had successfully sheparded XMEN in the early 00s. He seems to have a very good instinct for what the genre requires, and is doing fantastic things for Marvel. Should they get rid of him without a similarly inclined successor, Marvel will fail like it did before.

      • Algernon says:

@ Everyone talking about Kevin Feige and Fox. He was a production assistant on the X-Men movies. He worked under Laura Schuler Donner, who still produces those movies. He wasn’t shepherding those movies, but he was advising LSD on story and characters. Marvel didn’t poach him from Fox because he never worked for Fox. He worked for LSD and Avi Arad, under their production banners. He left to help form Marvel Studios around 2005/6.

      • North of Boston says:

I wanted to like the Wonder Woman trailer, because I think she’s got an interesting story and it would different than the comic book movies we’ve had recently. But it seemed every time the trailer started to build momentum, they cut to a scene with Chris Pine, and things dragged to a halt. I like him in the Star Trek films, but something about him/his character in Wonder Woman already seems like an anchor on the film.

  3. Rebecca says:

Damn! I was looking so forward to seeing this movie. I wanted Margot Robbie, Will Smith and Jared Leto to be so awesome. It has to be a bad script, of course, because they’re all such great actors.

    • Aiobhan says:

Margot has been getting really good reviews for the most part. Actually, I think most of the women have gotten meh to positive reviews. From the ones I have read, I think Jared and Joel have been getting it the worst. There is a dark part of me that likes that Jared is getting bad reviews after the reported crap that he pulled during the production of this film.

      • Locke Lamora says:

Really? From the ones I’ve read Cara is getting bad reviews also, and they barely mention Joel.

      • ann says:

From what I’ve heard from people who have seen it, margots performance was cringe, her accent floating in and out, over the top, and more like a cos play actress and margot doing an impression of harley instead of acting and becoming the character and convincingly so. A lazy performance that relied on sex appeal and silly comedic oneliners that fell flat.

      • CornyBlue says:

I am so glad Leto’s OTT ness ddi not transalte into a good performance. Hate him

    • Betti says:

From what I’ve read Margot, viola and Will r getting good reviews for their performances but I think it’s down to the studio interfering to much and the plot is all over the place. Plus Cara is getting terrible reviews by almost everyone, she’s a bad actress anyway and was not cast cause of her IT girl/model status. Leto isn’t in it long enough apparently even thou his joker looks good.

    • LannisterForever says:

I saw the movie and the whole cast delivers, so if you’re seeing the movie for them you’ll be pleased. Sadly no good performances or cool costumes can save the movie from being a dull, pretictable and above all incredibly bably edited/paced sh!tfest.

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

EEesh. Sounds so bad I don’t even want to spend money to see how bad it is.

      • Sarah says:

Ughh.. I almost want to pay to see it just so Margot doesn’t end up with a failure against her name… I really want her to succeed!

  4. Kate says:

The trailers aren’t even exciting. They’re dark and scary, and not in a fun way, like the reviewer said. With all the terrible things going on, I think this movie is ill timed. That’s not to say there should be a ban on overtly violent comic book movies, just that maybe people don’t really want such realism in what should be a fun summer blockbuster.

As for the Fanboys, well they need more in their lives than tearing apart film critics who say what they think about the movie. This movie isn’t going to be any differen than BVS:DOJ. The fanboys will love it despite its obvious flaws and no one else will even go see it.

    • Locke Lamora says:

I actually think that they should be dark and scary. Marvel is already bright and bubblegummy enough, DC should stop trying to be Marvel and embrace the darkness.

      • ann says:

It’s not about dark or bright it’s about doing something well and having the tools and talent to do so. Nolan could do it. DC needs to hire better people behind the scenes.

      • Locke Lamora says:

Oh, I completely agree, I was commenting on this: “…just that maybe people don’t really want such realism in what should be a fun summer blockbuster…”

      • Kate says:

It’s a matter of opinion. I personally do not like dark or scary. Just stating that some others may not be into that right now either. I do see your point that DC should embrace it to set themselves apart from marvel if that’s what they’re after.

      • Lurker says:

I’m all for DC being darker than Marvel, but the films should still be exciting. They don’t need to cracking one liners in order to make something which feels thrilling, inventive, or fun – but everyone in the DC verse just seems so plodding, and heavy.

They really need to start striking that tone, stat, because even though the fanboys and girls keep claiming that it’s grown-up, and human, it just feels dull to me.

      • Veronica says:

But excessively grim, dark content isn’t really a viable long term strategy, either. It works with Batman because the guy has issues, but it doesn’t ring true for more uplifting characters like Superman or Wonder Woman. Marvel works because they balance their humor with pathos.

  5. CidySmiley says:

I want this movie to be good. But I know it’s not. I can tell from the trailer it’s not. I think the thing about it is that these movies are too much, they need to be simpler with defined plots and characters (and I’m not saying this just on DC Marvel needs to do this too) what made the previous DC/batman movies so good is that it wasn’t about the explosions or whatever there was a subtly there that made the character stand out and be an actual character and not a phantom of one. They have so much opportunity to make good films and they just… dont. They do too much.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Isn’t that amazing though? I felt the same way from the type of trailers they kept showing. If I watch your trailer and feel like I’ve seen 75% of your movie from them then I know the rest you didn’t show me has to be pure crap.

This was all flash bang with not much of anything else.

  6. Aiobhan says:

Fanboys and some Fangirls really need to be removed from the internet. I never expected this film to be good, but the reviews make it sound unbearable. This honestly makes me worried about Aquaman and the Wonder Woman film. I am seriously crushing on Jason Momoa (aka Hawaiian Jesus) and Gal Gadot and want both their films to do well. I wanted to add the Flash to that list, but after finding out about that Darren Wilson project that Ezra worked on, he is now dead to me.

    • L84Tea says:

Yeah, Jason Momoa just made my “list”. That man is one big chunk of sexy…

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Well off to google that now. And Hawaiian Jesus is the PERFECF name for him. Lord that man…

    • Lurker says:

I kind of consider myself a fangirl, I love comic books and a sci-fi. I know what you mean, but we should try to remove stupid people from the Internet in general!

  7. Jegede says:

I feel bad for Will Smith and Margot Robbie.

They are apparently great in this and won’t deserve the taint of this $hit shower.

    • Brittney B. says:

And Viola!! She deserved so much better.

This won’t define her, though. She’ll be fine.

    • ann says:

Have you seen the movie yet? Because that’s not what I’ve heard from people who have actually seen the movie. Only heard good things about viola.

      • Arlene says:

I have and she was one of the brighter sparks in it. As well and Will Smith and Viola. Oh and one of the prison guards at the beginning, who was hilarious.

    • FingerBinger says:

Will Smith will be ok. This isn’t his first poorly reviewed film. Remember after earth?

    • LannisterForever says:

I saw it and they were the best performances in it, so they will be fine. I’m still lookin g forward to the Harley Quinn spinoff after seeing Suicide Squad (let’s just hope for a different director!)

    • Nicole says:

Don’t feel bad they had the best performances in them. It only strengthens the argument for a HQ movie

    • Anahit says:

I’ve seen the film. It’s disappointing. It’s disjointed. It’s also, above all things, very, very dull.
I’m not sure that Will Smith and Margot Robbie are good in this, it’s just that their characters register a little bit where the other characters don’t. IMO, Smith phoned it in and Robbie was actually pretty terrible. However, in comparison to Cara Delevigne both Smith and Robbie are awards grade. Seriously, nothing can prepare you for the sheer tramadol infused awfulness of Delevigne’s acting in this. It’s legitimately terrible and I was cringing the whole time she was onscreen. The other actors/characters barely register (so Jai Courtney/Joel Kinnaman will have to keep hauling their asses around looking for yet more breakthrough roles). Also, big whoop if you love a bit of sexualized misogyny, There’s lots of it.

      I was so disappointed.

  8. The Original Mia says:

My friend and I laughed about this last night. They need to be mad at DC for screwing up. Be mad at Zack Snyder for trying to be Nolan. Be mad at WB/DC for not having a vision for their movies other than beat Marvel. Also, grow up! Pull your heads out of the comics and realize that people have differing opinions and their opinions shouldn’t stop anyone from enjoying what they enjoy.

    • CornyBlue says:

But these stans genuinely think that these moviesa re good and the critics are treating them unfairly. Why would they be mad at WB/DC?

      • The Original Mia says:

They are the ones rushing their vision out there without the proper foundation. They hired Zack Snyder, even though, he hasn’t had a true hit film since the 300. Watchmen was problematic af. They hired him because he promised to bring back Nolan’s success/formula with Superman and MoS was a dud. They’ve continued along that path, even though, they’ve had plenty of warning they were heading down a dark alley with a serial killer on every block. They were never going to beat the Marvel juggernaut. They could have carefully planned out their series, instead of trying to go from home to 3rd base with BvS. But that might be too much truth for the DC stans.

  9. Erinn says:

Man I wish I could remember the video I was watching a while back where they were talking about reviews on Tomatoes. There were people listed on the front page of the reviews under ‘critic reviews’ and their profiles were just literally linking to a blog. Not a big, well known blog. A very very basic, live journal type blog. It was super funny, to be honest.

People have to chill out and realize that just because a movie gets a bad review doesn’t mean that they won’t like it. Same with movies that get good reviews – it doesn’t guarantee that everyone will like it. I think the best way to find a review that will suit your needs is to find a website or youtuber or something that shares a lot of your interests and who tends to like the same kinds of movies you like, and then go by that.

The movie looks pretty campy to me – but it doesn’t necessarily look ‘awful’ either. I won’t go see it in theaters, but I’m not much of a theater-goer anyway.

    • Tiny Martian says:

Yeah, I really don’t understand why people put so much stock in Rotten Tomatoes scores. I’ve had numerous instances where I’ve read a review on that site that was largely negative, but had a tomato symbol next to it, and then read another that was largely positive, but somehow earned a green splat symbol.

IMO there’s really not enough math involved in their scoring system, it’s just silly. All it does is say that a certain percentage of the critics whose reviews are posted on RT think the movie either is or isn’t worth seeing. So in many cases, a movie that is average at best can earn the highest rating because almost all of the critics are saying “meh, it’s not the best, but it’s okay so go see it anyway!” Factor in the fact that anyone who loves movies and is obsessive enough to run a blog and post their amateur reviews can be called a critic these days and , voila!, that’s the formula for RT.

  10. Mindy_dopple says:

This reminds me of the movie “America’s Sweethearts” and they avoided showing the film to critics until the very last minute. Man, I usually avoid the hype of movies but I already bought tickets for tomorrow’s showing. Well…. at least my date bought them and I didn’t. Lol

    • Wren says:

I loved that movie! Hopefully SS isn’t as bad as all that, but who knows. When you’re not proud to show off your product, it’s generally not a good sign.

  11. BendyWindy says:

I honestly don’t know how anyone watched the trailers and thought “this looks great!” It looks like a sh-tshow that’s trying too hard to be sexy and malevolent. Margot Robbie is too manic pixie goth dream girl. Jared Leto is…Jared Leto. It looks terrible. I can’t imagine that anyone other than fanboys and teenagers will love it.

    • LolaBones says:

I remember watching the trailer for the first time at the movies and a lot of people were so hyped about it… It looked terrible, over acted, a general mess. Go figure.

    • Looty says:

I SO agree, the trailer made me queasy, I’m surprised people are surprised the movie is yuck.

  12. The Gift says:

I just realised Will and Margot were both in Focus and now this trash movie….. They must really love working together

    • LannisterForever says:

Thay had really great residual chemistry from “Focus” in “Suicide Squad”. I think Margot had chemistry with Jared/Joker too, but I came away from the film shipping Harley with Deadshot.

  13. grabbyhands says:

I’m going to see it next Monday even though deep down I was fearful that it might be the type of movie where all the best bits are in the trailer. Oh well.

  14. Mindy says:

It doesn’t matter. Really. In the end, the movie will win its opening weekend and those fanboys will love it. End of story. How do I know this? I letter comics (mostly for the UK market). Most of the people I know at Facebook either work in comics or are aspiring to wrk in the field. So yes, most of them are fanboys/fangirle. Other than the last Fantastic Four movie, and they’ve liked every damn superhero film that has come out. They’re not watching it for story. They don’t care. They’re going to see these films because… Superheroes …. That’s why.

Seriously, I’ve stopped talking about films with 90% of them. They wouldn’t know a what a good film is anymore.

  15. Bex says:

I can’t believe Jared Leto sent all those awful gifts and generally behaved like a nutcase for what appears to be about 7 minutes of screentime.

    • Flowerchild says:

It seems like a PR stunt to me. He seemed to be trying to get people to buy into him being The Joker. It’s like he was saying The Jocker is crazy look at me I’m crazy too. Instead of just putting out an kick ass performance and making those 7 minutes count and letting the work speak for it’s self.

  16. L84Tea says:

I’ll be really heartbroken if this movie sucks because I have been looking forward to it all year. But then again, I loved Man of Steel and liked BVS enough, so maybe I just have bad taste in films.

    • Anahit says:

Prepare to be heartbroken. I was looking forward to it, saw it and was left really disappointed.I love the whole Suicide Squad mythology, but this movie just didn’t do justice to that whole dark, zany universe.

  17. Georgia says:

I think I’ll sit this one out and catch it on TV later on, like I did with Ant Man. Some movies aren’t worth the cinema ticket and it seems Suicide Squad is one of them.
I’m sorry for Viola Davis and Will Smith, who I adore and I would love to see starring in movies deserving of their talent.

    • saltandpepper says:

These movies are stocking fillers for actors. They’re fun and easily forgettable productions that are supposed to pull crowds and translate into big money for the production houses. No serious actor gets rated because of his or her performance in comic book flicks. It’s just a stroke of luck if they manage to make it through without being too camp and over the top with their performances.

  18. cakecakecake says:

While it may be true, I HAVE to see it for myself to judge. There have been plenty of films that critics deemed “bad” but I actually liked them.

My bestie and I have been planning to go see this together since last yr, if its bad, I know she will not stop talking about it during our whole outting. sigh.

  19. lea says:

I’m not on any side here (Marvel v DC Comics) but the reviews seem rather, well, exaggerated. I mean, is it really THAT bad? I saw Batman v Superman after reading some rather scathing reviews and left the theater wondering what all the agony was about. They are comic book movies, not high art. Or maybe my bar is just low for those types of films.

    • MP says:

Maybe they don’t pay magazines/web sites for good reviews? I read Empire magazine and have noticed over the past few years that they give Every. Single. Marvel movie 4 stars except for Civil war which got 5.
I quite like the Marvel movies and have seen them all which is why I know they are not all equally good.
I don’t think they actually give them money but definitely access to locations to do interviews with their stars and to get good behind the scenes pictures and stories for their magazine.

  20. LinaLamont says:

    “…overwhelming nihilistic, gun-worshipping, misogynistic and more. ”

In other words, it’s Trump’s campaign.

    • mia girl says:

Come on @LinaLamont, we all know that Obama wrote and directed Suicide Squad
      #KatrinaPiersonHistory

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Ah, Miss “I try my hardest not to blink because then my soul tries to find a way to escape”

  21. Squiggisbig says:

I think the writing was on the wall once they did the reshoots. Total waste of Viola Davis. I wish they had made the film more similar to Deadpool instead of whatever this is …

  22. Blackbetty says:

I hope its not as bad as Ant Man was.

  23. Madpoe says:

Well it got a better review than “Warcraft” and the sole reason for me for watching that mess was my “baby daddy” Travis Fimmel 😉

Sorry it got trashed but I’ve been sooo done with comic book movies and Hollywood keeps milking the last drop of crap.

  24. Lucy says:

Honestly, this happens all the time. Even if the movie is not crazy popular, there’ll still be people who like/love it. Most of the actors in this, if not all, will be fine.

  25. iheartjacksparrow says:

They should have gone the Deadpool route and made the film an R, not a PG13. Deadline Hollywood is predicting an opening weekend of $100+ million.

    • Josefina says:

      Absolutely.

My bf watched this with his brother and he said that was the main issue. That the movie tried to separate itself from all other superhero movies, but limited itself in a way that only made it more trite. Though he also said some casting choices were terrible and that the dialogue was offensively trite at times.

  26. Nicole says:

DC has a SERIOUS issue with pacing and writing tight scripts. BvS suffered from the same thing. Suicide Squad was a mess with only Will, Viola and Margot delivering performances that kept the movie afloat.
For all of Leto’s “method acting” his performance was terrible. And why WHY do people think Cara can act? She can’t and it shows in this movie. Sadly she has a major part as a main villain during half the movie.
Sure fanboys/girls will see this but once again we will have to wait to see if DC can produce a decent comic movie. I’m thinking wonder woman is their best shot at this point.

    • Anahit says:

Viola was compelling in this, actually, but couldn’t save the movie despite her herculean efforts. But I was disappointed in both Smith and Robbie. I completely agree about Delevigne though.

  27. pretty says:

bahahaha. I’m so enjoying this because brogressive ghostbros that were crying to their mommies to stop the evil feminazi agenda movie(ghostbuster) probably make up the most of them. bhahahahah so funny

  28. Karen says:

How much money did this cost? They’ve been marketing it forever so I know that budget is crazy. But with reshoots what does it have to make to be considered a hit?

It’ll make a lot this weekend for sure.

    • iheartjacksparrow says:

The studio says it cost $175 million to make, but studios tend to report low. Publicity for tent pole films can be as much as half of the production cost, which is why a movie like this needs to make at least three times the production cost world wide just to break even.

  29. Margo S. says:

I don’t even look at critic reviews. I only look at user reviews on sites like rotten tomatoes and imdb. Basically, critics are being paid by execs, publicists and studios to give great reviews for so so films. For example, the Martian. I think it has over 90% on rotten tomatoes. Are you kidding me?! That film was alright but a near worthy of a perfect score from “top ctitics”… I see you. Maybe it should have been at 60 or 70 but not near perfect. Basically I found out that many of the film critics have certain studios that they just always give incredible reviews too. And are deliberately asked to pan another’s studio release. (Haven’t you ever wondered why Marvel films are always praised and dc’s aren’t? ) These opinions are all corrupt and bought. Same goes for awards season obviously (#oscarssowhite anyone?). We’ll I’m glad the fan boys are calling them out. But I still only care about what my fellow movie goers think! Let’s see what twitter says!

    • 12344566666 says:

I think you will have a different opinion with IMBD user rating once you realize that people can give a movie 1/10 or 10/10 without actually seeing the movie.

Also, Rotten tomatoes don’t give scores. It just combines reviews and gives an average.

      • Josefina says:

Yeah, Margo is telling no lies about critics being bought but it’s silly to act like strangers on the internet are a reliable source for anything.

And I don’t think Marvel is necessarily buying people to make their films look better. They just make better choices than DC. Like, they haven’t cast Ben Affleck on anything, for example.

      • Helen says:

Not to mention that studios pay people to write fake positive reviews on IMDB.

  30. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Smh, why DC, why? Why does every movie out of you just make me sad and feel bored? I don’t know how you got on this track of making such terrible films but if you’re just trying to compete with Marvel then STOP. Stop because it’s not working and your current cinematic universe/perspective is unbearable for people who aren’t mindless fanboys and did genuinely love these comics.

  31. ElleBee says:

Time for DC & WB to start stealing directors and writers, Katy Perry style (I kid). They should just leave ensemble movies to Marvel who seemed to have found the perfect balance and is brilliant at casting. WB & DC should clean house and start fresh since they haven’t made a good movie since The Dark Knight. I agree with whoever said above that they should own their dark movies and also go the Deadpool route of R Rated films. Marvel understands what movie needs what and that’s why they hit box office platinum so often.

  32. Ninks says:

This is hilarious to me. You just know that the crybabies who signed that petition are the same whingebags who down voted the ghostbusters trailer en masse. Look who got the last laugh.

I’m glad it’s being panned, I hated the trailers and thought I was missing something because of all the hype. Turns out I just have good judgement.

  33. Incredulous says:

*gasps* A David Ayers movie being self-indulgent tosh? I am surprised. I presume we are not getting Aquaman then. It’s never gonna happen for Jason Momoa, is it?

  34. Abby_J says:

We have tickets to see it on Saturday evening, and if it is still in the theaters in September, I will be seeing it again when the hubs gets home, no matter how bad.

That said, critics or not, I am still excited to see it and hope that I at least enjoy it enough to not want my money back. Critics and I don’t always agree, but normally it goes the other way. They will praise a movie and it will win Oscars, etc, and I will go see it and wonder WHY?!

I don’t expect my Superhero movies to be Oscar worthy. I just wanna eat my popcorn and enjoy the thing for a couple of hours.

That said Will Smith is actually playing one of my favorite DC characters and I know he is a good actor, but if he doesn’t do it right, I’m not sure I will ever forgive him. I didn’t forgive Ryan Reynolds for ruining my favorite DC character (Green Lantern) until he made it up to me with Deadpool.

  35. Janey says:

Cara delevigne is getting awful reviews:
    The Telegraph:

“Here is a film in which model-turned-actress Cara Delevingne gives not only a personal worst performance, but something close to a former-profession-worst performance, as a gyrating, bikini-clad villainess called Enchantress, who kisses men full on the lips to turn them into her slaves (of course!) and talks like Vanessa Redgrave on rhinoceros tranquiliser. “

    • Betti says:

Well that’s expected – she’s always been a terrible actress and a terrible model as well. She’s another one who has family connections to thank for her ‘career’ – with the head of Conde Nast UK being your godfather and all.

  36. kiddo says:

I just came back from the movies, it was bad but not as bad as the critics reviewed. It was just one time thing not worth for second viewing. Margot Robbie has a good chemistry with Will Smith and Jared Leto is just too try hard to be The Joker. The dialogue is so poorly written, Not once that i laugh in their jokes. Batman appearance is just blah and passable. Will and Margot performance saves this hot mess.

    • Helen says:

Lol, that sounds absolutely terrible from your own words (terrible dialogue, no laughs, blah and passable characters). How is that “not as bad as the critics reviewed”?

      • kiddo says:

You’re right but i think what’s make this movie watchable is that i care about the character, especially Harley and deadshoot. Unlike Avengers AoU Now thats just awful. I dont know maybe i am bias because i hate everything with Scarlett Johansson in it. Not that i have anything against Marvel but DC casting has been better than Marvel. DC needs to find a better Director and storyline, since they get the better cast except for the batfleck and Jai Courtney stop making them happening people just dont buy it.

  37. Josefina says:

But do those reviews really matter? I know the Transformers movies have even lower scores than that and they are extremely successful. My connection is slow at the moment to check it, but I recall FSoG to also have around that score.

My point is: People more or less expect this movies to suck, anyway. For the way the film was being handled, I expected even lower than that. Will this really make a difference?

    • asdfggj says:

Yes, negative/positive reviews do affect box office. But it doesn’t mean that it’s the ONLY factor that affects the box office.

  38. tintin says:

when one think being wicked and taboo is cool-

  39. isabelle says:

The trailers are gimmicky with the music and BIG of it. Knew right away after seeing the trailers this was a steaming pile of poo of a movie. Leto looks like a hipster Joker as well, no thank you.

  40. iheartjacksparrow says:

If anyone has a T-Mobile account, their freebie for this Tuesday is a ticket to see Suicide Squad on opening day.

  41. Bread and Circuses says:

Okay, full respect to whoever created that ONE trailer that made the movie look like it was going to be super-fun mayhem.

I was planning to see the movie on the strength of that trailer. But now I won’t, because DC doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt from me at this point.

  42. PikaBoo says:

Lol blindgossip really is accurate with their blinds. They said that a movie was on a pr frenzy because reviews for the advanced screening were out and it was baad

  43. Nikayna says:

Laughing out loud at calling Harley’s role “problematic”. Of COURSE she’s problematic that’s the whole point of her character! Especially in the comics. She’s a dangerous looney bin with an all consuming obsession with the Joker, who encourages her codependency and violence at every turn. He even tries to kill her at one point, and she still takes him back. It’s only been VERY recently in the comics – like within the last year – that she’s come to realize just how damaging that relationship is and how maybe it’s not the best thing for her.

  44. Vox says:

I’ve said since day one that this movie looks terrible. Their Joker and Harley are insults to the characters. I love those characters so much and have done so since I was a little kid and BTAS came out. It’s painful to see Leto’s ridiculous Joker and the basic and cliched Harley who licks bars and baseball bats because she’s so crraaaazy and sexy.

Harley was a PSYCHIATRIST ffs. Can you imagine this Harley (or DC’s current incarnation of her, incidentally) going through medical school? I am so sad at how people are fangasming all over Harley and this movie in general when the writing seems godawful and they’ve totally mischaracterised beloved characters.
