Kirstie Alley admits she gained 83 pounds

Kirstie Alley has been very public in the last month about her weight battle and desire to get back on the horse. Now she’s on the cover of People, admitting exactly how much weight she gained: 83 pounds. I have no idea why in the world Kirstie would want to share something like that. Perhaps she hopes making it public will make her feel more motivated to change. But I’d sure as hell be mortified.

Kirstie admits the biggest culprits in her weight gain were a lack of portion control, excessive carbs, and ridiculous amounts of butter.

When Kirstie Alley stepped on the scale for the first time in 15 months, it wasn’t pretty. “I started screaming,” recalls Alley, sipping homemade fruit-infused water in her Hollywood kitchen. “It said 228 lbs., which is my highest weight ever. I was so much more disgusting than I thought!”

But looking back, Alley, 58, is hardly shocked. During her three-year stint as a Jenny Craig spokeswoman, she famously trimmed down to 145 lbs. after losing and keeping off 75 lbs. But since parting ways with company in 2007, she had not worked out and banished her gym equipment to the garage. As for her diet, her small, low-calorie portions gave way to Chinese takeout and pasta drenched with butter. “I fell off the horse,” says the 5’8″ star.

Okay, how did this happen?
It started with New Year’s [2008], right after leaving Jenny Craig. When you’re a spokesperson for Jenny Craig, there’s responsibility. You have a person every week standing over you when you get on the scale, and I did it naked because those panties could weigh 30 lbs.! It was amazingly successful. But the first nail in the coffin was that I didn’t have to weigh in. I just sort of went wild.

Did you go right back to indulging in cakes and pies the way you did the first time you let yourself go?
It wasn’t the exact same M.O. My food demons are Chinese food, sugar, butter. A lot of butter. If I’m at the movies, usually I eat popcorn without butter, but I’d say, “I’m at the movies, so who cares?” And toast with butter. Or let’s say I had two cups of pasta and six tablespoons of butter on it. There was a lot of butter going on.

What else would you eat?
For seven months I was a vegetarian, and I can’t tell you how much weight I gained being a vegetarian! A vegetarian would probably be eating vegetables. But to me being a vegetarian meant I’m going to eat enchiladas with no meat, and I’m going to eat lots of bread, lots of carbs.

Kirstie also admits that she rarely goes out when she’s overweight. She says sometimes she’ll do thinks with her friends, but you won’t ever see her at any Hollywood events.

A lot of our commenters mentioned on our last Kirstie Alley story that even at her height, it looks like she weighs a lot more than 228 lbs in her largest photos. Before she did Jenny Craig she claimed she weighed 200 lbs at her heaviest, and that’s definitely not believable. But you can’t really blame a celebrity for toning down the numbers. In fact most of us B.S. about our weight, we just don’t chose to do it to People. Whatever she’s at, Kirstie’s placing a lot of attention on herself and how unacceptably fat she seems to think she is. I hope that will ultimately serve as motivation instead of making her feel self-conscious for sharing something so private.

We needed an admission to figure that out?

Seriously, I REALLY think one of the problems here is that as women we (and I’m being generic with the “we”) make such a big huge stink about weight! And then we gripe about the double standard and the criticism, etc.

I honestly think we (again being generic) open ourselves up to the criticism and encourage the double standard by putting every single bit of information (fudged or not) about our weight out there for public consumption.

Oprah, Kirstie Alley, Winona Judd, there are lots of others.

I have this theory that if we would all just shut up about it, and either love and accept ourselves the way we are or change things if we’re not happy, the double standard would ease up and the constant focusing on a woman’s weight would definitely ease up. Considerably.

Just STOP MAKING IT AN ISSUE. A big public federal issue. I’m not saying you have to go hide in some shame hole, but why all the public navel-gazing about it? If you lose weight, and people notice, great. If you gain weight and people notice, IGNORE it. Just go on with your life.

Gah. I spent most of my life freaking out over my weight and finally got sick of it a few years back and I’m terribly glad I did. Ironically, when I stopped freaking out over it, my weight stabilized, I got happier, and it just stopped being an issue, period.

I think she looks great in that picture (which is probably heavily photoshopped, but whatever). She should just live her life and stop focusing so much on weight. If she’s having health issues, then yes, do whatever she needs to do, but why must it constantly be talked about publically?

she not being truthful with herself. at 58 years old find Peace with yourself Kirstie. or get a gastric bypass.
I am curious to what new diet plan shes producing that she told oprah made her lose 20 lbs in a month. Even Oprah didn not beleive her.

  4. ChristinaT says:

yeah seriously, who cares. i wish this woman would stop acting like weight gain is some sort of crime she needs to admit to and just overly dramatizing it.

yeah and if she was really 200 and lost 75 pounds, she wouldn’t really look like she weighed about 180 in the after photos. why is she being so public about her weight and clearly fudging the numbers at the same time? it’s like, hey, we didn’t ask, so you don’t need to lie.

And that photo is so photoshopped, it’s not funny. Those candid shots that have been posted recently show quite a few chins that are missing here.

    I agree, she’s closer to 300 than 230.

  6. paranel says:

What matters? So she is 300 . She is the same person inside as she was at 120 believe me. No I am not defending large size because I am one. I am a size 2 ( and not as in Kim Kardashian size 2 but for real ). I think she is beautiful and funny . It is how you carry yourself and not just the size.

  7. anastasiabeaverhausen says:

    paranel: well said, and amen.

    Thank you Captain PC. *eyeroll*

  9. cassie says:

Of course actresses are going to be obssessed with weight look at what happened to Jessica Simpson when she gained 10-15 lbs

People are so mean in society to fat people. I was at the mall the other day and this lady walked by who was overweight and these kids AND ADULTS were starring at her and making ‘oink’ noises.. so sad.. geeezzz. Being overweight must be really hard. People automatically think those people are lazy and disgusting without even knowing if something is wrong.

  11. kai says:

    She’s 58??? wow.

  12. czarina says:

While I absolutely agree that the media places much too much emphasis on weight (particularly of women who are NOT overweight, like actresses and models), on the other hand, what bothers me more than that is that Kirstie is not talking about any other medical problems she might have.
I have a very good friend who is 37 and has been diagnosed with Non-Alcholoc Fatty Liver Disease (meaning her liver is enlarged, not processing properly and layered with triglyceride fats that aren’t being reabsorbed properly).
She has been in the 190’s (lbs) for years. The doctor has told her that her liver condition is very likely dietary related (and due to the liver problem she is also suffering from Type 2 diabetes). Although not in the 200-300 lbs range, she nevertheless has serious health consequences because of her weight and lack of exercise.
I would admire Kirstie a lot more if she were discussing how her weight is affecting her health (especially at her age), rather than making it all an issue of appearance.

I love how this whole article is supposed to be about her coming clean about her weight gain, yet that photo has obviously been photoshopped within an inch of its existence and she’s still lying about how much she really weighs.
this is what she really looks like: http://scrapetv.com/News/News%20Pages/Entertainment/Images/kirstie-alley-skinny-and-fat.jpg

If you’re going to put yourself out there and try to garner publicity by being honest, you may as well, oh I dunno…actually be honest.

  14. Lori says:

Your still beautiful Kirstie! Stop letting papz shoot you with food in your hands though!

  15. Annie says:

Beautiful is debateable, but that was at any size.

At any rate, I’m really over hearing about people’s weight and then having them say ‘I hate that everyone obsesses over my size!”

Well shit, stop talking about it then and maybe you’ll drop off into obscurity where you belong. Thanks.

  16. Ron says:

There is an unreal pressure in LA to look good and it’s for both men and women. Women have a harder time though and the industry exacerbates everything. I think in Kirstie’s case she just needs to come to an awareness that this is who she is now and she’s no longer 28. Take a page from Kathy Bates, who has always been comfortable with her weight and has continued to work for years. The shell may have changed but she is still the same warm and hilarious person she always was.

Is EXACTLY what I’m talking about, thank you. You put it much more succinctly. I think just ceasing with the constant public confessions of weight gain and what I eat in the middle of the night paired with public self-congratulatory outings of your NEW body would go a long way to shutting OTHER people up.

I mean, if YOU talk about it non-stop, why can’t other people?

But if you stop making it an issue and other people still do, you can legitimately say “why are you making this an issue? Why do you care?”

It won’t be immediate, but I think it would help a lot.

  19. ChristinaT says:

i just wish she would stop being so hard on herself just cuz she gained weight… she just goes on oprah and talks about what BIG HUGE HORRIBLE mistake she’s made and how she thinks fat is ugly because it’s not natural and a fat leopard would look horrible yadda yadda… come on, so you gained a few pounds, take it in stride… i’m starting to think she’s causing much more damage to fat people than not…

IT’S NOT THAT BIG A DEAL, even when it IS a big deal, it’s not… just take it easy… heck, just say EFF IT i’m gonna stay this weight… i’d be proud of her if she did…

  20. richie says:

She is a beautiful woman at any size.

  21. Vibius says:

So is this the point where she is supposed to announce the formation of her own weight loss company?

  22. FF says:

And this is front page news because?

  23. Nony says:

Doesn’t she know scientology can help her with that? She ought to go donate a few more millions, and the pounds will fly right off.

  24. Dion Yuzn says:

A great fascinating idea this particular. I am 1 of those people whom often watch for what to fully developed just before taking action however in this situation Im mindful which inaction results in just disappointments therefore i will heed your remarks and commence to complete anything about this.
