Does James Frey have embarrassing audiotapes of Oprah?

jamesfrey_oprah

James Frey is most famous not as an author but as “that author who LIED.” Because writers never embellish. Really, the whole argument over his book “A Million Little Pieces” has more to do with where the line between embellishment and lying is. There was the controversy over the book itself (once it had been proven untrue), and then the controversy over Oprah’s involvement. Specifically, how she could champion a book that ended up being inaccurate/B.S., depending on your opinion. Frey went on Oprah’s show to sort of defend himself but mostly sit there and be humiliated. And Oprah was so over-the-top with her castigations that a good deal of public sympathy actually reverted to Frey.

His latest book is about to be released in paperback, and includes a passage that makes many wonder if he’s got some serious dirt on Oprah.

DOES James Frey have embarrassing audiotapes of Oprah Winfrey? The upcoming paperback version of his best-selling novel, “Bright Shiny Morning,” includes two passages omitted from the hard cover, which came out last year.

…The second passage is more controversial because it seems to be based on Frey and his nemesis, Winfrey. Who doesn’t remember Frey’s disastrous appearance on Winfrey’s show three years ago after his megabest-selling memoir, “A Million Little Pieces,” was found to have been embellished — an appearance that publishing legend Nan Talese, who appeared on the show with Frey, characterized as “mean and self-serving” and a “public scourge.”

The new section contains a story about someone caught up in a highly publicized controversy and a television show that he knows is going to end badly for him. When he feels people “turning on him,” he starts taping all his phone calls, including some with “the producers of the show, the executive producer of the show.” After getting publicly eviscerated, he tapes one with “the host,” where she checks to make sure he isn’t “going to hurt himself” and reveals some startling information about herself.

When asked for comment by Page Six, Frey laughed and said, “The book is fiction. Interpret it however you want.” Near the end of the passage, the narrator informs us that he has made copies of the tapes and distributed them to friends for safekeeping. “Someday he might discuss it,” the book says. “Someday he might tell his side of it. Someday he might play the tapes. Someday.”

[From Page Six]

The passage could have been put in there simply to stir up controversy in the mere hope it would somehow taint Oprah’s reputation. Which, frankly, can’t be tarnished with vague innuendo like that. I was wondering what the supposedly embarrassing information could be, if it did exist. What would Oprah possibly share with James Frey? Presumably it was before they were on the outs, but it’s not like they were close friends. I’d imagine their conversations were only about his book. Given that, maybe she divulged some past drug use to him – something she’s also publicly acknowledged. It didn’t hurt her reputation before, so it wouldn’t really matter now.

If there really are tapes – and who’s to say – I doubt there’s anything all that salacious on them. Oprah’s been doing her thing for a long, long time. She is incredibly savvy, and certainly smart enough not to share potentially embarrassing or overly-private information with just anyone. More than likely, this is nothing more than a half-assed publicity attempt.

I have to say that one interview put me off Oprah forever. All she had to do was make a statement advising all of her fans about the situation, but she chose to bring this man on her show and eviscerate him. It was horrible to watch and entirely uncalled for. I seriously doubt if you checked all memoirs for accuracy that you would find it all to be 100 % truth. I felt really bad for him….the punishment did not in any way fit the “crime”

The O does no wrong in the eyes of many. So no matter what he has, short of her admitting to getting screwed by donkey schlong is gonna really do anything to her.

I myself, have never been a fan of the O and was even less so when the interview stuff came out. I never saw the direct airing of it, but it was shown enough times everywhere else for me to get an idea of what she put that guy through.

  3. Bad Hair says:

She looks a bit like Jacko here. Not a compliment to either of them.

  4. Feebee says:

A half assed publicity stunt it may be but it’s a funny one. I’d love it to be true if only to imagine Oprah sweating it out. I was pretty disgusted with the way she handled her interview/bitch slap of Frey. I can’t imagine she would be careless enough to divulge such information to a writer. But it’s made my day just thinking it could be true hee hee hee.

  5. Bub says:

Based on the statement “she checks to make sure he isn’t going to hurt himself” then reveals something about herself, I’ll say it’s a suicide thought/attempt by her. There is a blind item right now on blindgossip.com – widely guessed as Oprah:

“BlindGossip – Which famous TV (and film) personality once tried to off herself? We’ve heard tales before of her abusive past, and the odds she had to overcome to become a success. What has never been publicly revealed was a failed action she once took at the depths of her despair. Ever the consummate planner, she even wrote out instructions as to the exact floral arrangements she wanted at her memorial.”

the cult of Oprah is scary.
she bores me though and she seems to have some sort of god complex. but kudos to her for being a success and getting so many sheep to follow her.

  7. boomchakaboom says:

Coocoo, she bores the crap out of me too.

  8. michellle says:

    sooooooooooo not impressed by Oprah.

  9. Cath says:

It would have to be something really, really bad. Don’t we already know some shocking things about Oprah, that she was raped and had a baby out of wedlock? I have a hard time believing that James Frey has darker dirt than that. Nice try, loser.

“he tapes one with “the host,” where she checks to make sure he isn’t “going to hurt himself” and reveals some startling information about herself.”

This suggest to me that she possibly relayed an instance in her life when she may have contemplated committing suicide.

How the hell is that embarrassing?.
It just sounds sad to me and ironically enough will eventually garner Ms. Winfrey sympathy in the end. Just as her eviscerating him on her show eventually did for him.

The only possibly embarrassment could only come from what she may have in confidence told was the reason why. Which in turn will not only embarrass her but will turn him into a pariah. So if I were him I’d think about it long and hard if he intends to continue in his profession.

I’m pretty sure her following way out weights any following he could ever hope to have by divulging information that was told to him in confidence.

Look what happened to Truman Capote after he decided to publish a book discussing “the inside scoop” on his “High Society” pals and none of them came close to Ms.Winfrey iconic status nor following.

Good luck with that one, lol.

i am sick to death of people writing their self-indulgent little memoirs about drugs, alcohol, bipolar, anorexia, and post-partum depression. james frey, elizabeth wurtzel and all the rest can disappear forever as far as i’m concerned, and take oprah with them.

  12. anastasiabeaverhausen says:

I stopped watching Oprah years ago, when she started talking more than her guests and interrupting them nonstop. If you have them on, the least you can do is let them finish a freaking sentence.

And then stuff like this? She was just embarrassed that her little book club thingie was caught up in all that.

    Gah. Can’t stand her.

  13. MeowMeow says:

As a struggling writer, I completely understand Frey’s quandry. I think he totally got the shaft from Oprah.

I, too, have quit watching her. Cult of personality, indeed.

  14. Kat says:

@anastasiabea: You’re not the only one who switched off when O started interrupting her guests. The kicker is that O has no idea how arrogant it makes her look. Or perhaps she just doesn’t give a hoot.

The last five years or so, she’s really believed her own press. Ugh.

  15. Kelly says:

Thank God I’m not the only one. I’ve grown extremely tired of all the shocked looks I receive when I reveal that I can’t stand Oprah. The way she constantly looks in the camera, how she interrupts her guests and can’t shut the hell up. Ugh. Most people just shake their heads blankly when I try and describe why I despise her so. It’s like I’m a terrible person for daring to not like Oprah. Bah.

  16. cherryblossom says:

I’m…neutral about the Oprah thing. I don’t watch the show, but I don’t wish her any negativity.

But what Frey did in his “memoir” was not just creative editing, but a complete lie. It annoys me.

  17. MB says:

Me, too. Can’t stand her. I also can’t stand the way she has her own portrait on the cover of O every month. She’s really lost touch…

  18. gimmeABreak says:

    – a book that ended up being inaccurate/B.S., depending on your opinion.”

    WTF?! Our opinion?!
The fact is, he could not get the book published as fiction, because it was CRAP. But when he lied and said it was FACT, people ate it up.
When a book’s story is supposedly true, people let the quality of the writing slide if the story is juicy enough.

He lied deliberately simply to get sales. He’s a scumbag. My opinion.

  20. RAN says:

Gee, I thought I was the only one who couldn’t stand Oprah! Glad to see I’m in good company.

But… I call BS on this story overall. First of all, it’s against the law to tape people and their converations without telling them you’re taping and obtaining their permission to record. Those “supposed” tapes will never see the light of day or Mr. Frey will spend a long time in jail.

  21. Legend says:

Frey is a drug addict and a liar, plain and simple. Imagine that, a man with a ‘disease’ (i.e. drug addiction) that still turns out to be a self centred asshole once he stops using.

  22. the original kate says:

@ RAN: actually it is legal to tape people if one of the people in the conversation knows they are being taped. therefore it is perfectly legal for him to tape his own phone calls.

  23. dubdub2000 says:

Is there anything we don’t know about Oprah or that would shock anybody? She’s been spilling her guts on air for over 20 years and has never shyed away from controversy. Moreover, I don’t see how saying that she called him to check on him and make sure he was ok is actually a bad thing?!

But yeah, in case you didn’t know you don’t mess with the “O”, dude , she got the beef conglomerate to “simma down now!!”! (lololol)

  24. jayem says:

I totally agree with jane. That interview was disgustingly painful to watch. She even brought on about 6 people from the industry to lambast him while he just sat there. No one to defend him. It was abysmal. And that’s when I decided she was no longer allowed on my tv.

And someone brought up something that made me dislike her even more. I will never begrudge her the good stuff she does, but it’s super annoying that she does a show on being frugal one day, then does her favorite things where a napkin holder costs $300. And all of the super-expensive designer stuff she hawks in her magazine. With herself on the cover…

By the way, EVERY writer embellishes a little. I do think Frey took it to the extreme, but it’s hard to imagine there wasn’t an editor or publisher behind him, pushing him to spice it up so it would be more interesting. I read a Vanity Fair article on ho and he seems like he really has turned his life around. So, good for him. O can suck it.

  25. Miss Wanderlust says:

I don’t hate Oprah but i think she overeacted by inviting Frey back to her show so she could publicy bash him….classy, NOT !!!
The singer Brandy lied about here so called marriage and i don’t remember Oprah saying anything about that ever again…instead of that she gets invited to Legend Balls and Celebfilled lunches by O. So next time i here anyone say that Oprah doesn’t like black people…it’s not true !!!

  26. Bill says:

Frey is a lying bastard who got rich despite his lies. If he had been anything but a white man, he’d of been crucified. Instead, he got another book deal and another. He’s rich now.
Conversely you all “hate” Oprah who was lied to by this scumbag. That’s not just disgusting, it’s stupid.

  27. hah says:

It’s funny how some people forget Oprah put her reputation on the line by supporting this person, not to mention being taken in by a “story” she believed to be true only to have been lied to.
Face it having Oprahs stamp of approval is akin to having a Best Seller and I’m quite sure he knew that. For him to have not mentioned the fact that “his story” was “embellished”, was not only an outright embarrassment to her because of her having been duped by someone who claimed to be telling “his story”, but was and should have been an outright embarrassment to himself.

If you’ve written a book about your life claiming it to be “true” knowing full well it wasn’t DO NOT present yourself in such a public forum as a Nationally Televised show, especially Oprahs’, that’s watched by “Millions” and not expect to eventually be exposed for having “embellished or made-up” what you previously touted as being truth.

As far as I can recall the Truth has always meant Factual not something you decided to either “make-up” or “embellish” to sell books.

She had every rite to do what she did. He “publicly” embarrassed her on her own show, nation wide.

  28. Fint says:

Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Highly entertaining books in an innovative style…..

who gives a rat’s tear if they’re true or not

I am sure the vast majority of singular events that happenened in the book has happened to someone somewhere at some time

If you couldn’t figure out that My Friend Leonard wasn’t exactly factual and only loosely based on an element of truth, then may the Lord help you
