2016 VMAs Open Post: Hosted by Drake’s ‘extra’ love for Rihanna

The MTV Video Music Awards are airing live tonight. I bet there’s a slight live-to-air delay though, just because MTV is committed to being “edgy,” so there will be lots of curse words to bleep out. But the show goes on at 9 pm, and MTV airs a pre-show starts at 8 pm. CB and I will be tweeting tonight – you can follow me here, and you can follow CB here. We’ll have lots of VMA coverage tomorrow morning, starting bright and early!

This year’s VMAs should be pretty great, gossip-wise. While Taylor Swift wants everyone to know that she’s sitting this one out voluntarily (likely story), everybody else will be there. Beyonce is performing (for sure now), and she’ll probably win several of the big awards. Kanye West is getting four minutes to do whatever he wants. Britney Spears is making her big VMA comeback to promote her new album. Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj are performing. Nick Jonas will perform his new single, and I’m looking forward to The Chainsmokers’ first VMA performance – they’re doing “Closer” with Halsey.

One of the biggest moments of the evening will be Rihanna’s performance as she accepts the Video Vanguard Award. Apparently, she’s going to bring it. I hope she performs “Needed Me,” just because that’s easily my favorite off of her new album. And since Rihanna is still banging Drake on the downlow – meaning SHE doesn’t want everyone to know and HE wants everyone to know – she just had to acknowledge her boyfriend/lover/downlow hook-up in some way. Especially since Drake is madly in love with her, to the point where he bought a billboard to congratulate her. Rihanna posted this… I love her comment. Drake IS extra.

When he extra ❤🏆!!!

    Blue Ivy is the queen.
I am not watching this year cause I don’t really care about Kanye or Rihanna or the others…The only performance I am interested in is Beyonce’s , and I’ll watch it online later.

I love Rihanna and after what she went through in her previous relationship with the scum that is Chris Brown, along with her shitty father, I’m really happy for her that she has a man who is truly into her and cares for her. I know a lot of people hate Drake and his penchant for strippers, but he seems like the kind of man who is all in when he’s with someone. I would imagine for someone with Rihanna’s previous misfortunes in love, this could be a very good thing.

  6. paolanqar says:

  10. paolanqar says:

Britney looks banging. She needs a new hair person but that’s easily fixable.

  11. Prairiegirl says:

How long do I have to pretend I like Beyoncé ‘s dress to ensure I’m not socially shunned? Because it is FUGLY.

    • Nicole says:

Not at all? I love Bey but her fashion has always been hit or miss for me.
Blue Ivy looked better IMO. She looked like a mini Queen

  12. Locke Lamora says:

    So far, everyone looks hideous.

What Beyoncé’ did should be illegal. How you gon’ show up on someone’s night and steal the show right from under them. I can’t deal. Show me where I can worship this goddess

    • Bianca says:

It’s like wearing white at someone else’s wedding. Even if you look fantastic in white, you should refrain from doing that.

  22. lilacflowers says:

Why can I only find gifs of Beyonce’s performance but every media outlet in existence wants to subject me to the entirety of that rambling mess of a speech that should never have happened.

    • K.T says:

I was so thirsty I looked at every peri feed! But it as worth it! Women ruled the MTV vmas!Bey was basically an art video on mainstream tv, Rihanna was incredible, including her *man-rockstar tuned* last appearance (listen to rock bands…tuning is not a priority …)

  23. Nicole says:

Everyone should’ve went home after Bey killed it and the next 10 VMAs after with that performance

  24. Matahari says:

I thought Drake was going to propose to Rihanna. I need some excitement!

  25. Nico says:

Wasn’t it supposed to be Rihanna’s night? Why did Beyonce take all the attention? I’m confused.

  26. ByeAshy says:

What Beyoncé did what straight up and down disrespectful. It was supposed to be Rihanna’s night sheesh!

    • jeanpierre says:

Beyoncé did nothing except pull out a legendary album this year. Of course MTV was going to honor her. Everybody knows how she is performance-wise now. She wasn’t going to dull her star to make subpar artists comfortable.

      • ByeAshy says:

Honestly, she shouldn’t have performed. That’s all I’m saying. You don’t upstage someone when they’re being honored. Let me come to your next birthday party and show you up.

      • jeanpierre says:

She shouldn’t have performed when she was nominated in I don’t even know how many categories? Yeah right. It was Rihanna’s job to keep up. And honestly, I liked her performances too. She wasn’t upstaged, they have never been in the same lane.

  27. Ciru says:

Listen. Beyonce SNATCHED UP ALL OF MY EDGES. I’m currently edgeless. Anyone who wants to send me some castor oil all the way in Nairobi should do so post haste.

  28. Soup2Nuts says:

I was there, Beyonce’s performance was amazing esp. considering she has laryngitis. I’m also pretty sure she was the only performer to sing live, except for Rihanna’s closing performance, which was spectacular. (When I picked up my tix from a production staffer at about 430, they still weren’t totally sure if Bey was actually gonna show).

Kanye’s speech was a rambling mess (he was loudly heckled by some one on the floor and then half the arena started chanting Taylor!) and the crowd reception to the video was tepid at best. Teyana looked amazing and she is so talented but the video was basically nonsense, especially the end.

And poor Britney got stuck following Bey, while basically playing second fiddle to G-Easy. I mean it wasn’t a disaster but it was mediocre in every sense of the word, even the track she synced to sounded weird.

Key and Peele were a massive disappointment. The personas they took on were…. they were. The only good moment of their night was saying “We live in a mysoginist society and i’m not helping!” in a flash of unexpected self awareness. I may be biased on that though, seeing as how I can’t ever remember which one is which and I only ever find the taller one occasionally funny.

It was a fun night and a very technically precise and difficult show re: set pieces and timing. (oh, all the things you miss watching the magic of tv while 300 production staffers run around out of sight keeping everything tight)

Also, it was straight up live, no tape. They knew when Bey was gonna swear and they bleeped it live at the garden too.
