Dwyane Wade: Donald Trump’s tweet ‘just left a bad taste in my mouth’

As we discussed two weekends ago, Dwyane Wade’s cousin Nykea Aldridge was shot and killed in Chicago at the end of August. It was a devastating tragedy for Aldridge’s family, for the community of Chicago, and for anyone with a heart. Within hours of the news, Donald Trump decided to politicize the tragedy, tweeting: “Dwyane Wade’s cousin was just shot and killed walking her baby in Chicago. Just what I have been saying. African-Americans will VOTE TRUMP!” People were justifiably appalled. Wade didn’t say anything about Trump initially, mostly because he was grieving with his family, and he was helping his family arrange memorial services for Aldridge. After a week, Wade did speak though. It’s tragic because he’s a million times more diplomatic than Trump.

In his first comments since Donald Trump marked the shooting death of his cousin in Chicago with a tweet declaring it more evidence that African-Americans would vote for Trump, basketball star Dwyane Wade said the Republican nominee’s message left him feeling “kind of conflicted.”

“You know, it’s like, on one hand, your cousin’s death is used as a ploy for political gain,” Wade told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos in an interview airing Friday on “Good Morning America.” But, Wade acknowledged that the violence in his hometown of Chicago is a “national story,” adding, “I want eyes on this city.”

“I was grateful that it started a conversation but on the other hand, it just left a bad taste in my mouth because of what my family is dealing with and what our city of Chicago is dealing with and it looks like it’s being used as political gain,” Wade said.

Trump senior adviser Tana Goertz told CNN’s “New Day” that she was not aware if he had apologized to the Wade family after the Chicago Bulls player made those comments, but quickly added that Trump ” would be the first to say, absolutely, I’m sorry I did not mean that to come across that way.”

“But at the end of the day, we are talking about how safe — or how unsafe our country is and how we do need to stop these criminals and we do need to protect our country,” Goertz said. “Hillary Clinton is not talking about that. And Donald Trump is the only one that is saying we need to keep America safe again. So he by no means meant any harm by that. I can guarantee you that.”

[From Politico]

Again, look at what the Trump spokesperson said. Still trying to score political points off of a young woman’s death. Incidentally, the two gang members who were shooting at each other – Aldridge’s death was caused by their crossfire – have already been arrested and charged. So I really don’t understand the political point here. There’s violence in Chicago! Okay, well the men were arrested within a few days. Gun violence in the black community! Okay, well tell me your plan for restricting access to guns. A black woman is dead, so black people will vote for Donald Trump! WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU?

Are we talking about the Donald Trump who basically called out the “2nd amendment people” to do something about Hillary?

  2. lilacflowers says:

My heart goes out to Nykea Aldridge’s family for this terrible tragedy. They have so much to grieve and mourn and sort through. Donald Trump’s attempts to insert himself into this sadness for his own political gain is just not appropriate or acceptable or decent.

Trump is an asshat. Moving on…

Prayers for Aldridge’s family and the CHI.

Jessie’s comment, but I will add so are his obnoxious surrogates.

      Yes, prayers for Aldridge’s family.

  4. Colette says:

His advisor said Trump would be the first to say,”I’m sorry”.Really??? Has Donald Trump ever publicly uttered the words ,”I’m sorry”

    • Betsy says:

Probably, but then three minutes later he would repeat the thing he said that necessitated the apology in the first place.

I like Mr. Wade’s suit in the picture, but I bet that print is nauseating at close range.

Dwyane Wade is a class act. He’s really involved in his community and committed to being a voice for change. I admire him a lot. Love and peace to his family during this time.
As for Trump … he can go to hell. My old hippie love-and-peace ethics just don’t extend that far.

  6. Tulip says:

My heart goes out to the family. This was such a sleazy thing for Trump to have done. A human being’s death is not an opportunity.

  7. Syko says:

So Hillary’s call for more stringent background checks on buying guns is doing nothing to keep us safe?

I’m sickened by Trump. Every tragedy is about him. He tried to turn the Orlando shooting to his advantage, too. There are times when politics are not appropriate.

Let’s get real: the reason why we’re talking about this is because the victim was related to someone famous. Would we be looking at the violence in Chicago today otherwise? To me, this is an important part of Black Lives Matter (though folks are welcome to tell me if I’m bastardizing), that each death is important, and that we stop writing off black on black crime. Nykea Aldridge was a person, not a statistic, and her death should matter even if she wasn’t related to Dwayne Wade.

Wow. Wade kept it real classy and diplomatic, more than I could have in his position. Good for him! To Trump, as always, I say STFU

  10. Jwoolman says:

Trump doesn’t have a normal range of emotions or much social sense. He very likely has no idea why people are blasting him for such tweets.

Who wants a future President who is so quick to carelessly shoot off at the mouth or a future President who doesn’t stop to think before he sprays diarrhea out of his mouth si freely.

Trump is rather disgusting to me. His mouth woyld have us in wars every year if he makes it into the White House.
