Kylie Jenner dyed her hair platinum: cute or doesn’t suit her?

A photo posted by Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

Trendsetter and cosmetic queen Kylie Jenner is no stranger to changing up her look, but she’s made a major change by dying her dark tresses platinum blonde. She debuted her new hue earlier this week, hitting the Big Apple for brother-in-law Kayne West’s concert at Madison Square Garden. She also may be showing off her new look at New York Fashion Week, where she’s rumored to be walking the runway for designer Alexander Wang.

The dye job is a bold move for Kylie. The 19-year-old “model” has gone through a lot of different looks and, of course, has chronicled them all on social media, but those looks were much less permanent as most of them involved wigs. In May’s Fresh Faces issue, Kylie told Marie Claire magazine, “I started wigs, and now everyone is wearing wigs. Kim [Kardashian] just used my wig guy last night…I just do whatever I want to do, and people will follow.” It’s sad, but somewhat true – remember the Kylie Lip Challenge?

If Kylie’s legion of followers – who will shell out big bucks for her lip kits and other cosmetics – want to emulate this look, they should be prepared to spend quite a bit of time in the hairdresser’s chair. Kylie documented her “blondening,” which took place on Sunday, on Snapchat. She captioned a pic taken mid-bleach with “All day” and later posted another picture captioned “The pain.” It must have taken some heavy duty bleach to get her dark hair to a platinum shade. I’m blonde (well, I was born blonde, not sure what color I really am anymore) and I get that stinging sensation when I get my roots touched up, so I can only imagine what she was going through. At least she was in good enough spirits to work that puppy dog filter to death on her Snapchat.

Kylie seems to be continuing some sort of family tradition by seeing if blondes really do have more fun. Kim went blonde for Fashion Week last year and sisters Khloe and Kourtney also lightened their locks for a time. In fact, Kylie posted a throwback pic of Kourtney rocking blonde hair to her Instagram last week with the caption, “VIBES”, which make me think this wasn’t a spontaneous decision.

So, what do you think? I love platinum blonde hair, but I think all of the Kardashian girls look better with dark hair. Blonde hair didn’t appear to do Kourtney any favors, that’s for sure. And platinum blonde is a pain to maintain. I know Kylie has the time and money to do it, but is she going to want to endure the pain? I’m sure she’ll be introducing some new look next week.

I don’t see a trendsetter. I see a little girl who is desperate for attention.

    • lilacflowers says:

I see someone on her way to interview for a stripper job in that first picture.

    • Sabrine says:

I dyed my hair platinum when I was 19. I hardly think it means you’re desperate for attention. It was something different, something fun. A month later it was gone.

      • Hannah says:

@Sabrine I dyed y hair blonde for fun too, but in her case, it’s for attention.

      • Kate says:

I dyed my hair purple. The hair color isn’t my point. My point is that everything she does is s cry for attention, and not attention from press or fans.

      • Annetommy says:

I think it’s cute. Certainly a lot cuter than messing with your body and then constantly displaying it like goods in a shop window.

    • sherry says:

My daughter’s Kylie’s age and bleached her hair platinum (among other colors) for a few years. Now it’s back to it’s natural color. I did the exact same thing at that age. It’s just hair.

    • AnnaKist says:

I’m confused. In the photo where she’s wearing the white bodysuit, her hair is shoulder length, but in the others where she’s wearing the beige hot paints and crop top, her hair looks longer and showing regrowth. Why is that, or is it just me seeing things that aren’t there?

    • Goo says:

She wants to be her big sister (Kim) so bad… It is sad and oh, so pathetic. Butt, lip injections and recently, a boob job.

    • JudyK says:

Desperate for attention like ALL of them are. This is all they have to offer or to think about…how they look. They are all vapid and classless to the max.

    • Mary Mary says:

Stepfording with plastic surgery to duplicate older sister Kim’s face and body may be a compliment to Kim, but Kylie has lost her unique look.

Conformity, may be great as a selling point, for the family “brand” but at some later date, wouldn’t there be a point, where one wants to no longer look like their sibling?

  2. Lora says:

I see a Kim wannabe and it doesn’t suit her

    • Kate says:

I don’t think Kylie has any idea who she is.

    • Shambles says:

Yeah, she looks identical to Kim when Kim had her blonde disaster last year (?) and it made her look like frozen-face Barbie With The Straw Hair.
Except the top photo, that actually looks pretty good because her hair is styled somewhat normally. If she would actually wear some jeans and a cute little t shirt and maybe a pair of vans or something, it would be pretty adorable. But she has to dress like she’s the 30-year-old arm candy of one of Donald Trump’s campaign managers instead, and that ruins everything.

    • ktae87 says:

It became painfully obvious when I looked at her instagram how much she has morphed into Kim especially with the blonde dye job

    • crtb says:

I looked at this picture and couldn’t tell them apart

  3. jeanpierre says:

What the hell is That outfit?

  4. serena says:

It doesn’t suit her at all, it makes her look even more fake than she is. And it’s just sad seeing she is transforming into Kim.

  5. Kirsten says:

I’m dirty blonde and a. Envy beautiful dark hair and b. Would look terrible platinum. I think she looks good.

    • EYEroller says:

But dirty blondes can rock highlights like nobody’s business and look so darned natural!!! You can also transition to other shades of blonde relatively easier. I have naturally dark hair and i look like a calico cat even with caramel highlights, can’t pull it off no matter how professional the highlights are. And forget about going blonde, even with olaplex making things somewhat easier to mantain, the eyebrows are always a shocking contrast.

  6. Kitten says:

Yeah they all go blonde at some point and they all look terrible. Khloe is the only one for which lighter has been an improvement, but that’s only because she chose the right shade of honey blonde. Platinum blonde isn’t for everyone.

Also, obvious boob job is obvious. Or is she just permanently on her period?🙄

    • Kate says:

It’s a shame they go blonde because their deep dark hair is really beautiful.

      • Kitten says:

The shade they were born with suits them. If it ain’t broke, why fix it?

      • ell says:

idk if that’s the kardashians’ women case, but lots of women go lighter when they start getting grays, and i think it makes sense. the upkeep of dying your roots dark is just way too much, i remember when my mum was still dying her hair dark and had to do it like every 2 weeks because it was so noticeable. since she went blonde it’s much easier and grays are less obvious.

    • Nancy says:

Actually, Khloe is a natural blonde, although not platinum. Yeah those boobs are pumped up. It’s like she’s trying to outdo her sisters, be Kim?……or anything to change who she really is or was. Sad to be so unhappy as you are meant to be, especially at 19 years old. Product of her environment I suppose.

    • Llamas says:

when I was 18-19 my boobs jumped in size-like B to D. It is possible for them to grow a ton suddenly. That being said, hers do look fake.

  7. Honest B says:

She’s young. Under 21 adults should go crazy with their hair! Plenty of time to be conservative in that area.

  8. Jess1632 says:

Seriously a Kim knock off at this point. Every pose she does even the jacket hanging off the shoulder Kim does. Kylie be yourself gurl

    • Kitten says:

Good advice but I doubt even Kylie knows who she is.

      • Sea Dragon says:

Exactly right Kitten. She has little to no sense of individual identity. She was robbed of any chance the moment PMK signed on the dotted line.

  9. Anna says:

The only thing I see in this teen is that she is very disturbed. She has absolutely no substance. She was raised in very disturbing circumstances by a twisted parent and I’m not referring to Caitlyn Jenner.

    • Bess says:

Caitlyn/Bruce deserves just as much scorn as Kris for the incompetent parenting and lack of values. Kylie is an indictment of their failure to parent.

      • Anna says:

I respectfully disagree. Bruce was, like every other trans person, in deep conflict, but he was able to parent many children who are well balanced and famewhore free. They never drank the koolaid. Kris has raised a den of monsters. Case closed.

      • Val says:

I disagree Anna, he didn’t actually parent the other kids, as many of them have stated over the years.
She is just as much of a famewhore as Kris, I mean come on, she tried to have her own show, talked about being a woman in terms of “deciding what to wear”.
Oh and got away with killing someone in car crash because oops, teehee.
Being trans doesn’t give you a pass for being a horrible person.

      • minx says:

Val, I agree. He was always a neglectful parent.

      • Tiffany :) says:

Kylie and Kendall were on KUWTK show swinging on a stripper pole in Kris’s bedroom when they were like 10 years old. Yes, both of their parents failed them, especially when the show started and long after.

  10. lucy2 says:

It doesn’t look good on her or any of them. Neither do any of Kanye’s craptastic clothes.

    • Pandy says:

Agree. Bad on Kim and bad on 2.0. I wanted to see the header photo in close up. The level of makeup she’s caked in, combined with east coast humidity. Wow.

  11. grabbyhands says:

It’s a great color and it hasn’t suited any of them. I hope she enjoys her hair feeling like straw for a while.

I can’t decide if this was another move to be Kim 2.0, more like Blac Chyna or just regrettable boredom. Or a combination.

  12. Lynnie says:

It highlights all the work she got done on her face that’s for sure.

I like Alexander Wang but this whole WANGSQUAD thing is giving me simultaneous cringe/eyeroll vibes. I want it to do well, because he’s got people like Mø, AlunaGeorge, and Vince Staples on there, but then in the same campaign he’s got Kylie and Tyga?? Like ??? Some squad 😒

Also, I find it really funny she continuously gets these fashion collaborations/modeling jobs when her personal style isn’t even original. (Insert “fashion isn’t original, everybody copies” but like fr she SWF the hell out of the real trendsetters.)

    • Kitten says:

It’s because of the talented Monica Rose that Kylie has decent style. I mean here, not so much, but I have to admit that there have been times that I saw Kylie wearing something and was like “oh shit I’d rock the hell out of that”, which isn’t something I say often about celebs.

But that’s not to say she doesn’t copy other celebs as well. They all seem to copy each other though so I tend to lose track.

In terms of “trendsetting” I have no doubt that Kylie is largely responsible for the lip injection trend which is…..would you want to be the inspiration for young women injecting crap into their faces? I sure as hell wouldn’t.

Ugh I’m commenting way too much on a Kardashian thread. Breaking self-imposed rule. Sigh.

      • Val says:

Monica Rose is a genius… everything she touches turns to beautiful. No matter how I feel about these women, I often check out their outfits because I can’t deny that they look good.

I like the blonde crop look, why did she have to add extensions after a day?! Totally ruined it.

      • AnnaKist says:

Thanks Val. I asked upthread about the longer length, and didn’t even consider extensions! Der. Is it usual to have regrowth so soon after such drastic blondeing?

  13. detritus says:

James Marsters (spike on Buffy) had to bleach his dark hair weekly to keep his roots platinum.
Apparently mixing sweet n low in the bleach helps with the pain?
Not sure if true, or just something people think because they are pain addled and looking for even the slightest relief.

It is definitely a deterrent, and I’ve always wanted to go platinum. My hair salon said ~300 to balayage me to some form of blonde. Maybe more than that’s or platinum. I don’t know if I can ever justify that plus the upkeep, plus going back to my natural after. Maybe I’ll wait til I’m grey.

    • PrettyPlatinum says:

I’ve been platinum since 2009 and it has never hurt to get a touch up. That being said I would never do weekly touch ups due to overlapping, it’s always been every 4-6 weeks (or 3.5 weeks on the low end of my schedule if I have a big event.)

My thing before touch ups is to not wash my hair for 4+ days before bleaching. Your scalp needs oils to protect it during the process.

I’ve also grown my hair from an A-line bob to waist length and it’s in great shape. I’m going to start a video series with all my secrets soon! I’ll chime in on another platinum post sometime.

Love platinum blonde and I think it looks great on Kylie👸🏼

      • detritus says:

That is excellent advice and makes me significantly less nervous about platinum pain.
I am always jelly of ladies who rock the platinum look!

  14. paolanqar says:

Those pictures of the sisters at Kanye’s fashion show are terrifying.
They look like they have parked the caravan to hit the town with their circus.
Those shoes are terrible, the boots are even worse.
Kanye’s latest collection is even worse than before.
    Am I missing something here?
Is it me not getting this fashion? or the world is so fucked up to actually call kanye a stylist?

    I’m baffled.

  15. laur says:

I just bought all the stuff to bleach my hair and go pastel pink. Did the strand test last night and now I see this! Hope people don’t think I wanna be just like Kylie!!
Also I hear coconut oil is supposed to really minimise the damage bleaching does. Anyway she has good stylists working on her hair I’m sure, so they’ve probably given it loads of treatment. Still doesn’t suit her though, just makes her more doll like.

    • PrettyPlatinum says:

Coconut oil is great. Olive oil is better!

Zap in the microwave for 35 sec and apply to dry hair. Wrap up in plastic wrap, wait 30 mins, and wash!

You might need to wash twice to get the oil out. Condition in between the rounds of shampoo. And buy a good toning shampoo that matches your color that you like. There are tons of options! Mix two or more together to create your own shade😍

And cleanse your skin esp on shoulders, neck, chest, and arms so the oil doesn’t bother your skin since it’s not normal for you.

  16. Payapa says:

IMHO the hair and the makeup does not get along well, her default makeup looks good with the brown hair but seems harsh with the platinum.

  17. SRB says:

I need to know…in the photo with the white dress and the brocade-ish jacket…is someone inside it with her?! Is it her purse or a small child? Looks so weird.

The hair is awful. Just awful. Girlfriend owns SEVERAL wigs that would have accomplished this “look”

  18. Snowpea says:

I know adults who follow this chicks every move with breathless anticipation and here I am clicking on a story.

What is the world coming too? 😂

  19. huh says:

Don’t forget to add wig happenator to her cv

    • Jwoolman says:

Haven’t people been wearing wigs forever? Why would she be considered a trendsetter on that? My mother even wore a wig sometimes to work in the olden days.

      • vauvert says:

She should add time traveler to her yuuge! list of accomplishments. Because I am pretty sure the ancient Egyptians used wigs and of course she must have been there, to introduce them.

      • huh says:

        Hahaha..
Kylie begs to differ. Your mum and the ancient Egyptians didn’t have instagram ergo they didn’t exist!

  20. Tessa says:

She needs to change her style if she wants to pull this off. There’s no reason why she can’t. Remember her fair freckled complexion under all that slap? She’s not Armenian blooded, she did have mid brown hair.
Once you chisel off all the makeup and dress her better it could work… She needs to drop street walker for young and funky

  21. Amanda says:

Pre-surgeries, She used to look nothing like Kim. Now, you could almost mistake her for Kim.

  22. Fiorella says:

I don’t like to comment on these people but on the matter of that hair, it looks pretty good

  23. TheOtherMaria says:

    She didn’t start wigs 😒

Kylie is just like her sisters, they steal from certain facets of black culture, make money, and then enjoy their privilege….

I’m so tired of this family and their arrogance.

    • caitlinK says:

Black people didn’t “start wigs” either. So Kylie is not “stealing” anything from black culture by wearing them.

      • LucyLu says:

Umm, the lacefront wigs were definitely made popular by strippers such as Blac Chyna and black culture. They idolize black culture, no need to defend her it’s quite blatant with Kim, Khloe, and Kylie.

  24. Michelina says:

I don’t think the blonde works for her at all, but a 19-year-old experimenting with her hair is nothing new. It makes all the work she’s had done even more obvious.

  25. Sea Dragon says:

Does Kylie have a scar on her leg? Looks like she has a bad one in the pic where she’s sitting next to that slack-jawed predator.

  26. QQ says:

The Jenners and Khloe objectively have the coloring for lighter hair if they choose it but also this color if a fail

  27. Dani says:

I just wanna wrap this girl in a huge blanket, bring her to my house and sing her lullabies. It really kills me for some reason that she never stood a chance. No one in her family really gives any sort of shit about her well being.

  28. Cee says:

I was born with blonde hair too, but it turned auburn as soon as I hit puberty, so I don’t know what hair colour I have anymore – now it’s a mid brown with red hair in it? IDK.

Not everyone can pull off platinum blonde… Maybe Khloe would? She’s the only “blonde” one in that family.

  29. Drew says:

I thought that was Bebe Rexha.

  30. artnoosa says:

She is not trend setter , maybe for some teen but that’s it. She can’t figure or create her own style for god sake and she keeps on copying her sister. The first image annoys me, i wish i could tell her to step aside as the view behind her is so lovely.

  31. Teddy says:

    So pathetic.

  32. Cinderella says:

How do you go back to dark brown after being platinum? The transition must be awful.

    • PrettyPlatinum says:

I know right?! It’s what I’m most afraid of. Worst part is as soon as you go back to brunette you miss your blonde hair more than ever! (Been there done that–it’s my 3rd time being blonde and I’ve stayed for 9 years now.)

And you can’t just dye the whole thing brown unless you add other colors (usually red). Best done a pro and it will have to be monitored closely always because the color won’t stick like regular unbleached hair.

However, the ombré look is beautiful and a great way to transition and keep the platinum on the ends but achieve a more natural look. You let your roots grow out and your stylist blends the two colors together. It’s pretty cool!

  33. Rihannaisqueen says:

How did they get her hair that light in one go without it falling out? Even with olaplex?

    • PrettyPlatinum says:

Omg I was wondering the same!! But she has been wearing wigs for so long, maybe all of her hair was virgin hair and in that case it’s much easier to go in one sesh.

It’s usually when stylists are stripping out old color that it takes forever. But at root touch ups it’s just virgin hair + bleach = platinum!

And love your username. Queen Rih 4eva👑

  34. huh says:

    Hahaha
    Kylie begs to differ!
The ancient Egyptians didn’t have instagram ergo they didn’t exist!

  35. Barbara says:

I actually like it on her, but only the short hair. Not with the extensions.

  36. mayamae says:

Kendall is the only one with decent modeling instincts. Kylie lost her neck, and Kim, besides looking like she’s lapsing into a coma, seems to have her head morphing out of her chest. Kim really has no idea.

And it says a lot about Yeezy when Kylie looks like she’s got a large beer gut.

  37. Bess says:

The bleached blonde hair that doesn’t go with her spray-tanned complexion is the least of Kylie’s worries at this point.

The girl is lost and is begging for attention. Kylie looks like she’s totally over it and she’s not even 21 yet.

  38. Cine says:

Does she have not one shred of humility? ” I just do whatever I want and people will follow.” It is going to be a very rough ride down to reality for this girl. Aside from that however you would think someone would point out how utterly conceited and rude that sentiment is. Ugh.

  39. Kat says:

What the heck is going on in that photo of her with the embroidered jacket? Look to fhe right of her hip…an arm is there…what is it?.. SO WEIRD!!!

  40. Erica_V says:

So her first face was Tyga’s ex’s and now her new face/hair is the same as the girl he dated & put in his music video.

Does she have any self identity at all?

  41. emma says:

she’ll have it dyed something else in a week
