Duchess Kate was ‘the girl with the Queen’s pearl earrings’ in Holland

wenn29663712

Here are some more photos of the Duchess of Cambridge in the Netherlands yesterday. She just did a day trip, knocking out four different events in one day and flying back to Britain on a regular commercial flight. Considering how much the Cambridges love their private planes and taxpayer-funded helicopter rides, I’m sure the fact that Kate had to fly commercial to and from the Netherlands must hurt a little bit. It must also hurt that Kate had one of the Queen’s handlers with her for the trip. The Queen’s Private Secretary Sir Christopher Geidt was along for the trip, and that goes a long way towards explaining why Kate wore a pencil skirt instead of a flouncy skirt with no hem-weights and why Kate wore her hair back: the Queen was spying on Kate and Geidt was reporting back to the Queen on every hair toss and flash.

I’m sure Sir Christopher Geidt was also there to keep an eye on one of the Queen’s favorite pair of earrings. You see, Kate borrowed the Queen’s diamond-and-pearl drop earrings for the Netherlands trip. Doesn’t Kate have her own pearl earrings, one might wonder? Yes, she does. But those earrings aren’t the Queen’s earrings. And Kate – ever mindful of the photo-op – wanted to wear earrings to “match” the famous Johannes Vermeer painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring. Kate made sure to stop by the painting specifically and waited for photographers to get the shot at the Mauritshuis museum.

According to the Telegraph, Kate said it was a “real treat” to see the painting in person and while Kate didn’t mention her borrowed earrings, she did specifically ask about the Colin Firth-Scarlett Johansson film and if the painting is more popular because of it. Kate was also particularly keen to see The Goldfinch, which makes me wonder if Kate has managed to get through the Donna Tartt novel (I have not been able to, so it would impress me if Kate was able to).

What else? No one will say if Kate discussed Brexit with anyone in the Netherlands, but I think it’s a pretty good bet that she did not, probably because… she doesn’t really care? I mean, does she care? Eh. She also spent time on a walkabout, and she shook a lot of hands but she “declined requests for selfies.”

The helmet hair, my God.

She looks fantastic. Giving me Jackie O vibes.

    • ReineDidon says:

But we are in 2016. She’s always too classic borderline boring.

    • ell says:

she doesn’t imo, she looks far older than her age.

      • Elle; I came here to say the same thing. shw seems to have the same thing American presidents have where they age incredibly
in office. I feel since she’s become princeas her face has taken the brunt of change.

      • Poisonous Lookalike says:

@ell and @Little Darling: I agree; her face has aged terribly since she began that diet during/right before they got engaged. While some extra weight (as we’ve seen with each of her pregnancies) does help, at this point that doesn’t look like it’d be enough to make her look closer to her age.

Those low-bun hairstyles aren’t helping, either. They look bulky and clunky, not fashionable. The only good thing about them is they keep her from playing with her hair so much.

      • Lorelai says:

The “jealousy” comeback is so tiresome. There are plenty of people who would not want to be her or have her life for all of the Crown Jewels in England, but have valid criticisms of how she handles her role.

      • Sarah says:

I think it’s her weight or lack thereof – she looks much better, very pretty when she has about another 15 pounds on her. Her jowls fill out cause when she’s so skinny, they hang. It’s common with very thin people.

    • tanakalee says:

Yes THANK YOU. She looks elegant and lovely and her hair looks fab. God, this site sometimes….SMH

      • mellie says:

I too like her sudden retro style. I know that if I lived in the UK I might tire of supporting the royals (or however that works taxpayer wise) and these two are far from killing themselves, but man you are right about this site…complains if the hair is down, now complains about the hair being up. I can tell you this, if I’m flying commercial for however many hours that flight takes I’m probably going to have a wrinkled skirt and I’m probably going to spray/pin the crap out of my hair too.

      • Tessy says:

I think she looks nice too. She’s been working, wearing appropriate clothing, putting her hair up, flying commercial and still the snark.

      • Sarah says:

Oh, my gosh, Mellie!! We must all be jealous of this vacuous, lazy woman with the petulant man-child husband!!
Seriously, the Brits do support the Useless Ones and it’s not like she flew Coach. I’m sure she was in first class, and the flight was a whole 1 1/2 hours. Wow.

    • BitsandPizzas says:

This site can be so ridiculous. This woman can’t win — she looks so old (the rudeness in those comments are insane), then allusions to injectables. She has helmet had, yet if she wears it loose she’s inappropriate. I think she looks lovely.

      • detritus says:

        I love her helmet!
It’s lovely and not frizzy and classic.
I wish I could do that for work. Alas, I am not even as sophisticated as the Duchess Dolittle.

      • kristen says:

I suspect most of the vitriol is rooted in jealousy.

      • Poisonous Lookalike says:

@kristen: I suspect most of the vitriol is rooted in the fact that she’s in a position to do a great deal of good, and so far she and her husband have largely squandered it. UK citizens support these two, and they’re self-centered layabouts.

      • kristen says:

@poisonous lookalike: Fair enough! So criticize that, and not her physical appearance (hair, skin, weight, physical features, etc.).

      • notasugarhere says:

Kristen, people criticize her appearance when it involves her hair and extensions flying in people’s faces, when the hair is unprofessional, etc. Perfectly logical, not rooted in jealousy. They criticize her ridiculous, expensive clothing and her spendthrift attitude.

She is the person who has made it about her looks not the work. She is the one who chooses to keep going out, buying new clothes, and putting far more effort into her appearance than her work. That is what she has done for 15 years in the public eye. Being a taxpayer-funded government employee for the past 5 years hasn’t changed her.

      • Sarah says:

Kristen, that is so rude. That someone can’t receive valid criticism without being called jealous is ridiculous. Kate doesn’t work very much at all, and gets huge benefits. People resent that. All she does is dress, like a Barbie: she doesn’t give speeches, talk in public, give anyone anything to like but smile and wave. And often wear skirts that blow up and hair that flies. She’s not serious, so isn’t taken seriously.

    • bluhare says:

I think she looks good too. She’s meeting the king of another country. She should be conservative and dignified looking. Good thing Maxima wasn’t there. She would have knocked Kate over with her hat. 😉

    • vaultdweller101 says:

Agreed. I think she looks very elegant, and I love that hair, super classic.

    • BTownGirl says:

Agreed! And the hair color is finally, FINALLY really great!

    • Tulip Garden says:

I think she looks fantastic too! Great outfit, sharp and clean lines. Tasteful updo. I really like this on her especially for this type of event.

      • Mbh12 says:

She looks terrible, IMO no one who has purposely dieted and immaciated themselves to the size of almost a bone looks great.
This woman looks terribly thin, worn out and she managed to make expensive clothes look cheap. She shows up and somehow these outfits she wears look like off the rack mix and match sizes. In some photos the skirt was hanging on her and looked a size too big, yet the jacket fit, but in photos the sleeves are big on her.
She is plain, IMO , dull and no matter how much the press keeps trying to hype her, she just doesn’t have charisma or even know how to carry herself well. Her posture looks terrible in many of the photos.
I feel like I’m watching The Emporers new clothes when I read a article on how stunning or fabulous Kate is, then I pull of the photos and see a woman who looks emaciated and worn out and rather plain. Nothing really special there.
The press can hype her to hilt, but she still looks rather average and doesn’t seem to carry herself with gravitas. Imo

  2. Natalie S says:

She’s got the right costume on for the occasion but, IDK, she doesn’t look well. It makes me wince now when I see pictures of her because she just looks brittle.

I know it’s a joke how much Kate and William vacation, but my immediate reaction to pictures of her now is that she should be in sweats, resting and drinking cocoa or something. I genuinely don’t mean any of this in a snarky way. She looks frail.

    • Mbh12 says:

That’s why I think the UK press is full of crap, they keep trying to pass off this emaciated looking Kate as some great beauty. I believe there are issues there and it will come out one day. JMO
In one photo she is walking and you can see nothing but Thigh BONE protruding from her leg.
Who is the press trying to fool? I feel like I am watching the Emporer’s new clothes when it comes to Kate and her press.
She looked emaciated in Canada and she looks emaciated now on this outing, there is no way that she looks healthy in person. The press in the past would have been asking questions by now, but the current wave of William and Kate sycophant press is afraid to inquire IMO because they are afraid to lose the limited acess they have.

I miss the press Days of reporter James Whitaker, because he would have been all up in their lies and hidden issues. He investigated the royals and called them out in the press on their crap.

      • Lorelai says:

I have to think that if she continues the way she has been, it will reach a point where is just cannot be ignored anymore? Although with the BRF, who knows.

        I hope she is healthy.

  3. Anare says:

She looks ok. I was a peplum fan in the 80’s but not since so I’m not crazy about her outfit but she looks appropriate. Ever since you mentioned the wiglet I can’t unsee it. This hairdo seems so dowdy. At least she didn’t wear the wedges of doom, so that’s a plus.

  4. Bobafelty says:

You know that movie “It Follows”?

Except with Kate, all I think is “She Bores”.

  5. Kitty says:

Have you read the DM article about Kate and how she is more relaxed over her public role? It said
“Royal courtiers hope the Duchess of Cambridge’s visit to the Netherlands is the first of many solo engagements.

No royal can match her media coverage now. ‘If you can’t get the Queen to visit then everyone wants William and Kate – and if they can only have one of them they want Kate,’ says a source.

Always fiercely determined to protect her private life and family, the duchess is now more relaxed about accepting a public royal role.
Previously attempts to involve her – even when initiated by the Queen – were resisted”.

    • INeedANap says:

If it took me almost a decade to get the hang of my job no one would hire me.

      • notasugarhere says:

Especially after you spent a decade of your life not working another job and only campaigning to get this job. The one you refuse to do. But you’ll take the salary, staff housing, and perks regardless.

      • Kitty says:

@INeedANap, you are correct. What was the whole point of the Netherland trip? Nothing at all. It did not prove anything. The crowds weren’t even large to see her at all.

      • Lindsay says:

She got to wear earrings like the girl in the painting? She can’t resist the opportunity to theme dress.

      • Lorelai says:

The pearl earring photo-op is such an obvious eye-roll…lots of people seem to think it was quite clever but I found it OTT

      • Lindsay says:

Seriously? I am with you Lorelai. It was not necessary and it sure wasn’t clever.

      • DSA says:

@Lorelai & Lindsay: For some reason, I have a strong aversion toward famous people who do “photo-ops” or “call the paps”. If she just wore the damn earrings and took a selfie and put it up on Instagram (with a “look what I did on purpose for the occasion! #Vermeer #OOTD”) without pretense, it wouldn’t piss me off a single bit. Posing for the right angle, waiting get photographed by an outside party is so distasteful in my mind.

I can’t imagine the amount of time famous people just wander around trying to get noticed and photographed, when retaking selfies until you get the right angle will take half an hour max. What annoying class of people.

      • Lorelai says:

@DSA, yes! I hadn’t thought about it that way, but that’s exactly what bothers me too. It *could* have been a cute idea had she been honest and approached it more like that.

One of the things that made me like her early on was when she admitted she was very excited to go to Prince Edward Island because she was a big Anne of Green Gables fan. She didn’t try to be all coy, she just came out with it! And it was so relatable IMO.

    • Mbh12 says:

Did you also read the part that said the Queen asked her to do Royal duties in the past and Kate wouldn’t . I think it was William’s doing really. Jmo

    • Lorelai says:

How can she “resist” the Queen?! The queen is her in-law, yes, but she’s also her boss!

  6. Esmom says:

I like the idea of her hair up, but the style is a little stodgy. Does a nice job of showing off the earrings, though.

I am one of those who LOVED The Goldfinch, couldn’t put it down. I’d say it’s one of the best books I’ve read in the past decade or so. Maybe one more time will be a charm for Kaiser?

    • Senaber says:

RE: Goldfinch: I wasn’t into it until Nevada. Then I could not put it down!

ETA: there are also grief themes in the goldfinch that Kate might be interested in because of William. Trying not to spoil here, but I can see some parallels that might interest her.

      • Kai says:

Ugh the Nevada part took soooooo long.

I finished the book through my sheer power of stubborn but I hated pretty much everyone.

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

Esmom, I wasn’t going to read it, but you’ve changed my mind.

As for the hair: I love it up and think that was a great call, but the severity of it is a bit stogy, as you say. And sideview it looks kind of like Olive Oyl’s coif. A few stray wisps could have remedied that pretty nicely. Still, I think up was a fine idea for the occasion.

All in all, she seems to be on a good path here stylistically. Too bad someone didn’t find a less wrinkle-prone fabric for that suit, but the color is nice on her. The Queen’s earrings are great — why couldn’t MY mother-in-law have been a queen?

You just know someone put a bug in Kate’s ear about being sure to stop in front of The Girl With the Pearl Earrings so that a comparison would be drawn and photos would capture it in perpetuity.

    • Lars says:

Ohhh I LOVED the novel. I listened to it on audiobook so that I’d be able to get through it. I found it long, but it wasn’t anything that detracted me from the story. Great writing!

  7. Betsy says:

Hey, she wasn’t fiddling with her hair. Let’s embrace the helmet!

  8. Georgia says:

I think she looked lovely and appropriate. Might sir Christopher always tag along, please?

  9. Qzie says:

She looks great, elegant. The color is fab on her. Yep her hair is controlled to a fault, but it looks so much more professionally appropriate instead of sausage curls or in her face.

  10. Locke Lamora says:

Shouldn’t somebody with a degree in History of Art be able to ask more about the painting than “did the movie make it more popular”?

    • Sixer says:

      My thoughts precisely.

    • Meow says:

DO THEY STILL MAKE FABERGE EGGS

The Katebot whirs, sparks, flicks its hair.

      • Kori says:

They actually do though obviously not THE eggs. But I was at a lecture on Faberge and the new eggs are very high quality and go for hundreds of thousands. (Ironically the same or even more than what they were sold for in Czarist Russia) They had one for us to see and it was really amazing. They are by commission like in the heyday.

      • notasugarhere says:

An art history major marrying into a family with one of the largest collections of Faberge on the planet should have known the answer already. Particularly since not-so-distant cousins of her husband’s family were the ones who made Faberge easter eggs famous.

      • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Faberge announced last year that they were going to start making the eggs again. They made eggs for others (the Rothschilds etc..) thou the Imperial Eggs are the most famous (50 were made but only 43 survive). George V bought 3 of them for his wife Queen Mary (TQ’s Grandmother).

    • Nic919 says:

The stories about her copying notes from others during university start to hold more weight when we hear how little she has to say during these art gallery visits. Anyone off the street could have made a comment about the Girl with a Pearl Earring movie.

As for the suit, while it is appropriate, she has many in a similar style that she could have worn instead and which would not wrinkle like this one did. I am sure the suit isn’t cheap but for it to wrinkle like that shows poor workmanship. Kate wasn’t travelling for days in the suit. Just an hour or so. On a plane.

Not sure what the point of this visit was though except to pretend to look like she is working. No speech about the mental health centre. Nothing of substance.

      • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

There are also stories about the tutors that were hired to help her get throu the degree and how the faculty turned a blind eye to alleged plagiarism when she started living with him.

I agree that as someone with an art history degree she should be more articulate and knowledgable when talking about art, esp to a curator. But we all know she only did that degree so she could stalk him around campus.

      • Kitty says:

Honestly is she religious or a Christian? She seems lazy and lacks work ethic. I do not think this is her path in life.

      • Shambles says:

Honestly why is there someone on every recent Kate thread asking whether or not she’s religious, as if lack of religion automatically disqualifies someone from being a decent human being?

      • Lorelai says:

@Shambles, thank you! What on earth does religion have to do with anything here?

I’m an atheist and I know despicable people who go to church every Sunday, so…

    • Happy Mom says:

Also-hello, it was a lovely book before they made it into a movie.

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

Yeah, that was embarrassing. Cringe-worthy. “Popular.” Omg.

    • Hazel says:

That’s what I thought, too! I had the good fortune to see a special exhibit of Dutch masters at the High Museum in Atlanta, with The Girl With a Pearl Earring as the centerpiece. I was stunned, just in awe over that painting. Oh, and I loved the book but never saw the movie.

    • Lorelai says:

Honestly!! I have no art history training and even *I* would have known not to center my comment on the movie, FFS 🙄

  11. Lainey says:

It’s not surprising there’s little quotes. Apparently the media were kept far back and banned altogether from the discussion on mental health. But I highly doubt she was discussing brexit. She didn’t meet with any politicians and isn’t their King like queen Elizabeth- a figurehead who has to keep out of politics? She’d hardly be discussing it with him even if she was capable.

    • Wren33 says:

That was my question – I thought the royals got in trouble if they tried to influence politics, or is that only internal and external diplomacy is okay?

    • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Again the media are being controlled by paranoid Bill, its not the first time that this has happened esp when she’s been out on her own. What are they desperately trying to hide? We can already see that they have no interest in participating in their duty unless they are made or bribed by shiny new things (designer clothes, a helicopter etc..). We can also see that she is no public speaker or knows how to act in these situations but as others have said the more you do them the better and more comfortable you become.

  12. vava says:

That hair…………….it reminds me of the mother in Psycho. Very dowdy.

Nice earrings and wow, I’d love to see that Vermeer painting.

Cute suit – bad shoes/bad with it though.

    • Kori says:

It’s a beautiful work. I saw it the last time I was in The Hague. The Mauritshuis is a great museum.

  13. COSquared says:

First thought:she looked Donald Hitler orange. Seriously. Nice suit, however.

  14. monette says:

I read The Goldfinch and wasn`t impressed. I give it 3 out of 5 stars. The story was very interesting, but it lacked something. And I hated the ending.

  15. Jana says:

I love the hair. I wish I could get my lifeless mop to do something like that, but it would take a team of wranglers and a whole lotta shellac.

I know that everyone criticizes her for the down do’s and the hair twirling, but she really does have nice hair. She needs to stop being so teeny bopper-ish and go with a shorter length and more up do’s.

  16. MinnFinn says:

British Airlines made all fellow passengers wait in their seats so that Kate could get off the airplane without any plebs touching her or slowing down her exit. How does that preferential treatment not enrage the passengers on her flights as well as Britons who prop up their monarchy?

    • Kitty says:

      @MINNFIN,
If Harry or even William was there they wouldn’t care. Just shows Kate is not humble at all.

    • BitsandPizzas says:

Airlines do that for all kinds of celebrities.

      • MinnFinn says:

I realized after posting that it’s probably just an extra fee for a service upgrade that is available to anyone.

      • Egla says:

Also I have been in a plane with a woman with a month old baby and she was the first to get out and a car was waiting for her to drive her to the border control. And our airport is small like 30 m from the plane we have the main building. But because she came from a long distance flight and also with a small baby she had paid something to get that treatment. Also love or hate Kate she is VIP, she has state funded security and they have rules and plan implemented for cases like this.

Another curiosity: When Hillary Clinton was State Secretary many years ago she came to our country for an official visit and she took her coat off in front of the cameras (very relaxed visit by the way). She just put her arm out and one of her security detail (they were all female IF i remember correctly) took her coat and another one fixed her jacked for the photo op. IT was so quick that I had to look it up on youtube to be sure it really happened. They were secret service agents but also her handlers in small things like that. These people are well taken care of mostly for security reasons and spoiled by their position

    • Ms. Turtle says:

Are you seriously blaming that on Kate? I highly doubt that was her personal request. Also, it probably makes the most sense on the airline’s part. They want to get passengers on and off planes in the most efficient manner possible bc they have schedules to maintain.

      • MinnFinn says:

How is that more efficient? I realized after my original post that it’s probably available to anyone who can pay the fee for upgraded service.

      • Ms. Turtle says:

@Minnfinn, I don’t know for sure but I’m guessing she was likely in row 1 or 2. So likely she would be escorted off by her security immediately upon arrival at the jetway before passengers in economy even opened the overhead compartments. Of all the things to criticize her for, how she exited the plane doesn’t seem as valid to me. I’m guessing the same would be done for George Clooney or even Victoria Beckham or even you if you were sitting in seat 1A. I’ve never sat in economy and deboarded the plane whilst first class passengers were still in their seats.

Edited to add: I just read that she was in the first row and she was escorted from the plane and taken to a car on the tarmac before the other passengers disembarked. This sounds like to me a security measure and again, not a personal request on her part. I could be wrong but it doesn’t strike me as out of the ordinary for the wife of the future king of England. But she would have been mercilessly criticized for taking a private jet too so she clearly can’t win.

    • Fifee says:

I’ve been on a BA flight when Will & Kate boarded. We waited maybe an extra 20 mins in total from when they got on at Gatwick and got off at Marseille. They were sat at the front so it didnt cause problems for anyone. No airline is going to make them mill around with the other passengers waiting her turn to get out of her seat and then disembark. I have no love for the royal family but they are who they are and I understand why they get preferential treatment.

  17. Starlight says:

The DM got some great pics of her in the cabin of the BA scheduled plane not that they were making any digs or references, especially as her pale blue suit looked as though she was about to serve a drink, but I thought she looked uncomfortable boarding, maybe the helicopter private jet suits her better. As for making any comments on the girl with the pearl earring, I suppose she could have said what a beautiful girl I wonder she was, and look what a coincidence I am wearing a pearl earring.

    • Elizabeth says:

We’ll never again see her on a commercial flight after that quip about her being like her mother and comparing her suit to an air hostess’ outfit! She is posher than posh doesn’t DM know!

    • Daring says:

I have no idea what that pearl earring thing was about.
So Lazy Waity Katie wore an earring similar to the one depicted in a Vermeer painting. So what? What does she try to prove with that? Class? Cultivation? Lineage: as she has the same earring as some girl wore some decades ago? Such a tactic will result in a cheap headline at best.

  18. Kori says:

one of my Dutch friends met her on the walkabout. It’s a brief thing so nothing gossip worthy. Said she had a lovely smile and was very friendly. No selfies but another friend got a picture of Kate and the back of my friend’s head meeting her. 🙂

  19. vava says:

If Kate worked hard, her appearance would become less of a topic of discussion. She doesn’t seem to have many true social interests though. A person passionate about promoting mental health initiatives would do a lot more than she does. A person wanting to truly be a patron for their charities would do much more as well. She’s in the position to do some very amazing things and yet does the bare minimum. It’s Kate who has turned this into a discussion about her wardrobe, hair, makeup – because there is nothing more to talk about when it comes to her.

    • Zardi123 says:

      Hear Hear totally agree Vava

    • Elizabeth says:

Vava- Agree. I think its to do with “consequences”. A regular Jane showing such lethargy at work would not be tolerated. But does Kate have any consequences?? So far , it doesnot seem to be the case, the bar is not just low for her, the bar seems to not exist. And she is wearing new, very expensive outfits for each of these “more public” engagements she is doing/forced to do. What in the world justifies the cost? Where are the consequences of her expenditure? Of course WIlliam is equally work-shy but none of Kate’s siblings seem to really work either so it is a very very bizarre universe she seems to live in. Even if one does not have to earn their “Daily living” how vacant, empty and pointless Kate’s existence seems to be.

I feel like we should not even comment on her posts anymore to give it no traction. Its not like her fashion is anything notable…atleast its not for the right reasons…lets all just honk for Harry 😛

    • Kitty says:

Well vava, in a religious perspective do you think this is Kate’s path or destiny in life?

  20. Lawrence says:

I almost feel bad commenting – and I’m a fan of hers, but I have a question. What is up with her skin. I’m a nutritionist and natural beauty consultant. I’ve seen it all in terms of lifestyles and tried many different approaches to health myself. This chick has the skin my beloved mother had in the 70’s – who was a part-time cashier, smoker/coffee drinker and sun-tanner. Even counting in any skin-ruining lifestyle factors, wouldn’t there be enough money to buy a good scrub or go for a facial? I’ve noticed that girls in the UK are into moisturizers but not exfoliators. Take note ladies, you need both.

    • Happy Mom says:

She was a smoker-not sure if she still is.

    • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Having seen her in person her skin isn’t very good, its dry and leathery looking which can be attributed to tanning, smoking, genetics (look at her mother and sister) and her love of heavily applied foundation. Its quite fashionable in the UK for women to put foundation on like they are plastering a wall (am British and used to do that when i was younger but a breakout of excema on my face put a stop to that) as we all want to look ‘tanned’.

    • Daring says:

She has had very nice skin when she was younger.
It seems like her lifestyle is taking toll: dieting, tanning, smoking, (bit of drinking), excessive exercise.

Thank Goodness we were all saved from embarrassment yesterday ..with the Queens private secretary meeting King Willhelm.. We all said what on earth would unintelligent barbie doll talk about to a King ….
also seeing a copy here of Angelina who is a smart and very highly intelligent in a suit and waity thinks oh I will copy that earrings pale blue suit but am afraid the intelligence is lacking in every way she looked completely out of her depth.. and will always be known as a dolly peg in a designer outfit nothing more nothing less

  22. notasugarhere says:

In other royal news, the king and queen of Belgium are on a week-long state visit to Japan. Masako was at the dinner! I hope we see more of her this week.

  23. mazzie says:

Her hair looks appropriate to the event, come on. The outfit, while not great, is also appropriate to the event.

  24. Kitty says:

Hey does anyone know how large the crowds were there to see her?

    • Joannie says:

There were probably large crowds just as there were in Canada. I think their popularity is on the rise especially after Canada. She’s absolutely lovely in person and pictures do not do her justice.

      • Meow says:

        Carole! How’s Party Pieces?

      • Sarah says:

I read the crowds were small in Canada and the Canadians were angry, especially after all of the Canadian reporters were left out on the sidewalk during the children’s party. I don’t think they added any fans in Canada. Also heard crowds very small on this visit.

    • Elizabeth says:

Kitty – 1 of the royal forums reported, not very large crowds and mostly comprised of school kids.

      • Kitty says:

Really? I thought Kate was popular.

      • Lindsay says:

There is popular enough to sell a $3 magazine and popular enough to take a day off work and kids out of school (I know some were on a field trip, they don’t really count as they had no say in the matter) to stand around for hours to watch someone walk around with a barricade between you and the chance to say “hi.”

I think she is more on the magazine end of the spectrum.

That is a lot of effort to put into watching another human pace around in their self made cage. Who would you do that for? They would have to be pretty super special. I’d do it for Reba McEntire but am hard pressed to think of someone else who’s mere presence would merit all that.

      • Kitty says:

@Lindsay so you are basically saying she will never draw in crowds like Diana did.

    • notasugarhere says:

KateMiddletonReview has video of it, small number of people. KM only greeting one set of kids and ignoring the others.

  25. Joannie says:

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/royal-visit-canada-saturday-1.3777148

Just one of many articles. They were hugely popular while here. She looked beautiful by the way. Carries herself with class and is a standout.

    • Nic919 says:

Was that before or after she blew off the kid who gave her flowers at the departure? Or when she and Will did not bother to speak at all to any of the staff at the Yukon hotel?

Beyond the first day it got maybe 30 seconds of coverage on the National and CTV News. Most Canadians don’t care about the royals and certainly don’t want to pay for them.

    • Sarah says:

The Canadian reporters left on the sidewalk outside of the picnic party were all jokingly taking pics of the sidewalks, street, etc. but they were angry. Kate and Wills won no new fans in Canada’s.

  26. Lorelai says:

Someone on Duchess Kate Blog actually suggested they think she should receive a Nobel Peace Prize for her “work” in mental health – no joke! I can’t stop laughing 😂

    • Lindsay says:

That is hilarious. There is so much wrong to unpack from that statement. So we will leave it at “Aww, bless their hearts.”

      • Lorelai says:

I know. I’m still snickering. Oh, and they thought both William and Harry should get them as well. For all of their “work” in mental health. I died!

    • Olenna says:

AYFKM? She is a walking “issue” herself.

  27. KateBush says:

I like the suit and the hairstyle; both very appropriate. The designer should have been able to come up with something that didn’t wrinkle though!

I think it was a good look that she took a commercial flight and there’s no need to criticise her for that because we dont actually know how she felt about it do we?

    • Deedee says:

If Tash is her stylist, the woman needs to learn about fabrics and what won’t come off a flight of a few hours looking like a stale apple. Kate’s extensions limit the kind of updos she can wear. At least she had her hair up and tried to dress professionally. It’s been, what, 5 years now? You’d think she’d be doing this kind of stuff all the time.

  28. Daring says:

Is it just me or are her droopy upper eyelids getting less and less droopy the older she gets?

  29. Daring says:

btw. why do most newspapers still call her “Kate Middleton” but celebitchy calls her “duchess”???

  30. Lorelai says:

Brit CB’s/royal watchers: some other sites seem to be suggesting that having the Queen’s top aide with her is some sort of huge accomplishment, or honor, like it shows she’s “important” enough for HM to groom her. But I read it more like Kaiser did…she needs the help.

Can someone more knowledgeable than me chime in here? Is it typical for HM to send someone like this- did this gentleman ever accompany Charles + Diana anywhere?

    • A says:

No, but one of the sticking points for Diana’s tenure was that she didn’t have enough help in her early years (“thrown to the wolves” gets used a lot). I think her being “important enough” is a moot point. Barring a succession crisis, she’s likely going to be Princess of Wales some day, and then Queen after that. She’s not a minor royal, she’s going to be on the big stage, so this was likely an effort on the Queen’s part to make her put her big girl pants on and learn the ropes properly. If it helps her, that’s a good thing, and it seems to have, so I hope it keeps happening (I’m not even gonna touch the discussion of a 30+ year old woman needing a handler for something like this…at this point, literally anything is an improvement.)

    • Kaz says:

Can’t let her out on her own: either because they don’t trust her or she isn’t confident enough. Amazing that a well educated woman with all those years experience is only just doing a solo trip like this. She’s really not very willing, or able, or is just stupid. Also amazing when many many other young women, with fewer advantages, are able to work hard in professional capacities and, yes, speak to strangers, make intelligent small talk, read briefing notes, give presentations and are INTERESTED in things!

    • Allure says:

Speaking generally: Royals do always have some handlers and staff on hand: bodyguards, personal assistants, secretary, driver … .

I too thought it was rather embarrassing for Kate to be sent on a one-day trip with low-key engagements but being guarded / advised / controlled / nanny-ed by a Queen’s secretary.

      • Lorelai says:

I think the comment I read stuck with me because it was worded like, “Kate’s arrived!” w/r/t Sir Christopher being there. But the way I read it was that Rebecca Deacon isn’t cutting it and Kate needed more guidance. (Or, maybe “prodding” is a better word)

  31. DSA says:

    Annoying.

  32. notasugarhere says:

Sixer, I’m anxiously awaiting your comments on the Marmite Wars…

  33. Starlight says:

Middle picture below – hand on tummy – wants another baby or is going to have another baby – she does seem to do the hand on tummy as like a protective signal

    • addie says:

I think it’s just to show off the ring. She put her left hand on her backside too. It’s amazing how much coverage that ring gets from someone who is right-handed. The other day the same went again to smooth her bum. She can’t not do it.
