Selena Gomez is in rehab for mental health: ‘She can go to a very dark place’

Singer and actress Selena Gomez has reportedly checked back into rehab in a facility in Tennessee to deal with her anxiety and depression. This is Selena’s second stay in rehab, having gone once before in 2104. At that time, numerous stories speculated of drug addiction. A year later, Selena corrected those rumors by divulging that she had been diagnosed with the autoimmune disease Lupus. Last month, Selena cancelled the remaining dates of her Revival tour to deal with her health. After a few cryptic tweets, concern for Selena grew. Multiple sources have confirmed that Selena is, in fact, back in rehab for her mental health and that she is improving little by little.

Selena Gomez is on the mend.

Multiple sources confirm in the new issue of Us Weekly that the pop star, 24, has been recovering at a Tennessee treatment facility since announcing August 30 that she was taking a break to manage “anxiety, panic attacks and depression.” The “Kill Em With Kindness” singer canceled 34 remaining dates on her Revival world tour as a result.

“Selena is dealing with lupus, but this break is to focus on her mental health,” a source close to the pop star tells Us. “She can go to a very dark place.” The insider describes the facility, just outside of Nashville, as a “private and quiet place,” but “super intense.”

The Disney Channel alum — who went to rehab in 2014, one year after being diagnosed with the chronic autoimmune disease — also stopped working on new music. “She was supposed to be recording, but she hasn’t told anyone when she’ll be back in studio,” a music industry source explains.

I don’t know why but I hold a real soft spot for Selena. I fell a little in love with her on Wizards of Waverly Place and it just never left me. Although, she doesn’t get any free passes from me, like when she convolutes shade thrown on Taylor Swift with BLM. However, I really feel for her. I feel bad that she is suffering, that her mental health is compounded by her physical health and that she has to broadcast every step of her process to avoid rumors of drug abuse.

I’m glad to hear this positive update because that phrase “she can go to a very dark place” is well-known to anyone who has or knows someone with mental health issues. Fans were so relieved to hear of her recent sightings around town, they started a #SelenaIsBackParty on Twitter. She received more good news on Monday in the form of five AMA nominations, including Artist of the Year. And Gossip Cop says she is in no way involved in the Brangelina divorce so she won’t have to face that pitchfork-wielding mob when she checks out. I wish Selena well and hope she is fully back up on her feet soon.

I’ve always thought she was so pretty, and she’s actually a decent comedic actress too. I hope she’s doing better, depression is a constant battle.

  2. Kate says:

Depression is no joke. I hope she’s getting the help she needs and is feeling better. Poor thing 🙁

  3. HeyThere! says:

Glad she’s getting help. I hope celebs realize how lucky they are to jump into rehab whenever they need to better themselves. I know so many people that need it but damn it’s expensive as heck.

    • Cee says:

It’s not only about the money – it’s also about being able to take the time needed for treatment. Not everyone can take 2 weeks off from work, especially since mental health is so taboo.

  4. BradyIsBack says:

Have a soft spot for her as well. She basically has been supporting her family since she was small. Her staying in Tennessee may explain why Swift’s been traveling to Nashville a lot lately.
Hope she comes out stronger and better. Definitely a good gem.

  5. PunkyMomma says:

I wish her well. Depression is a serious illness, just a debilitating as a physical illness. Glad she’s getting help.

  6. Laura says:

As a 37 year old woman, I am not ashamed to admit that I love Selena’s music and think she is a positive role model for young women. I truly wish her the best as she continues to cope with the monster that is depression.

  7. freewhitebaby says:

In-patient psych treatment shouldn’t be called rehab. Rehab is generally associated with substance abuse. If a person in long-term psych treatment, we’re talking years, then it’s referred to as rehab. Otherwise, what Selena is going thru is in-patient treatment for acute depression and will hopefully be released in 1-2 weeks.

    • JenniferJustice says:

she is actually in a rehab facility because her problem is actually with substance abuse. She was already there just recently and left against therapists direction but she cannot be forced to stay. Too bad celebs are so ashamed of addiction they’d rather lie and not stay as long as they need to to get healthy. I believe she does have Lupus and that’s a long hard journey to live with, but besides that, I also believe she does drugs and it gets the better of her.

    • anon33 says:

This is what I came here to say. I agree with @JenniferJustice that it’s called rehab bc she is actually there due to drugs, and not the reasons she is stating. At least not primarily-I’m aware that drug use and depression go hand in hand. Thing is, there is no such thing as “rehab for mental health” and if she is in rehab she should just own it and not lie. I really wish celebs would stop talking about this issue in this way. IMO it actually detracts from the discussion around treatment of these issues.

There ARE rehabs for mental health. Rehabilitation isn’t just about addiction. There are rehabs for physical injuries and rehabs for mental illness and rehabs for chronic illness. And they are mostly for acute short term care (edited to add: generally up to 90 days, but usually 1-4 weeks). They are called Psychiatric Rehabs or Psychosocial Rehabs. I am affiliated with New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services. Longer term care is generally referred to as longterm psychiatric hospitalization.

I think I’ve only commented on here like twice before but I had to say something about this. There ARE rehab facilities for mental health – I went to one. It was actually the same place Demi Lovato went. The place I went treats eating disorders, addiction of all kinds, AND mental health issues. The place specifically treats all of them because more often than not, if you have an issue with one, you have an issue with more than one. And yes, it’s rehab. Most people are there about two months. It’s not long-term as in years, but the minimum stay is 30 days. It’s not a psych ward. Anyways, I think more and more rehab places are doing this because of the co-occurrence of issues, which is actually really great.

      • Bre says:

Agree. When I was younger I went to one for depression and anxiety and there were addicts, those with eating disorders and mental health issues. You have some group sessions together and some are broken up based on why you are in treatment.

    • Veronica says:

Why? It’s a medical condition like any other. We refer to the physical rehabilitation floors in my hospital as just “rehab units” just as we do the drug treatment floors. I’m not going to stigmatize one group in order to make another sound better. Rehabilitation is about a person dealing with a problem and doing their best to fix it, whether that’s a drug habit, a stroke, or a mental breakdown.

  8. Cee says:

I¿m glad someone as public as her is talking about mental health as something to take care of instead of something to be hidden or taboo.

I hope she gets better. Getting out of a dark place is hard and takes a lot of work.

  9. Bethany says:

I was hospitalized twice for severe anxiety and depression. Mental illness is a nightmare – there is no escape, no pain pill to relieve your torment, no magic cure. I hope she finds the help she needs.

  10. Tifygodess24 says:

Many of the comments that I saw yesterday on social media were ridiculous. People don’t get (or care to get) what living with a serious chronic illness can do to you physically and mentally. It’s a nightmare. You feel betrayed by your own body all while dealing with the mental torture your brain wants to throw your way. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. I have a soft spot for Selena, she is pretty harmless- yes, even if you don’t agree with her views- and she seems to be great with her fans. I hope she is able to get the rest and wellness she needs.

  11. lucy2 says:

Best wishes to her. Tough enough to do in regular life, I can’t imagine with the whole world in your business. Hopefully she feels better soon.

  12. kimbers says:

Love her, but isnt in denial about her drug use, it happens and celebs arent immune. Also the dark places she goes to? Wonder if it’s that downward spiral time when she was pushing for movie roles and having “meetings” with peeps without getting the roles. Embarrassing. Hope she comes out the other side wiser and with more confidence in herself.

  13. ravensdaughter says:

It’s not rehab if you don’t have a drug or alcohol addiction-it’s mental health care. It’s sad that rehab has less of a stigma than mental health care, but that’s our society…

    • paranormalgirl says:

There is Psychiatric Rehab. Trust me, It exists and that’s what it’s called. I’m affiliated with the New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services (NYAPRS).

  14. Erica_V says:

Maybe she deals with her lupus symptoms of depressions & anxiety in unhealthy or perhaps even self medicating ways. No matter the reason why I’m glad she took a break and is working on herself.

Of course – I believe anything she may be dealing with is exacerbated/fares up when she reunites and then breaks up with JB. She really needs to stay away from him for her own health and well being.

  15. BTownGirl says:

I have a soft spot for her too and I hope she’s feeling better soon. Girl, you’re too cute to feel terrible.

  16. Otaku Fairy says:

I have a soft spot for her too, even though I’m not into her music. There were probably only like 2 things she’s said or done that were an issue or a moment to side-eye her for that I know of(which is a pretty low number for someone who’s been in the public eye for 9 years), and she seems nice, you hear mostly positive things about her. Hopefully she’ll be ok. It’s easy to think that when a famous person is in any type of rehab or has any type of hospitalization, it must be drugs, but I actually do believe it’s the lupus and anxiety/depression issues.

Why in the world would she be involved in the Brangelina split?
