‘SNL’ spoofs the second presidential debate, plus ‘Melania’ does Lemonade

SNL2

Saturday Night Live’s cold open was once again devoted to politics, as Kate McKinnon and Alec Baldwin spoofed Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in a skit about the second debate. While I think SNL’s political writing has been mostly on-point thus far, you can really feel that the writers struggled with this skit. Like, if you watched the actual debate, the whole thing was so profoundly strange and skit-like already, so how do you spoof something that is already like a spoof? That being said, Kate and Alec nailed it, Kate especially. If anything, I worry that Alec is making Trump into too much of a harmless buffoon. Trump is not harmless!!

I liked “Nah, I’m good” and Trump calling the black guy “Denzel.” The Jaws music was a good touch, although once again… it was SO MUCH weirder and more disturbing in real life, the way Trump stalked HRC on that stage.

SNL also did a skit/music video called Melanianade, where Melania Trump and the Trump-associated women spoof Beyonce’s Lemonade. This is clever! SNL’s host Emily Blunt played Ivanka Trump. Shout out to Beck Bennett for once again nailing Mike Pence’s whole vibe too, and Alec Baldwin does another cameo as Trump.

Incidentally, does anyone else think it’s interesting that SNL isn’t doing a mid-week special like they did during the 2008 campaign? You would think that since they have such great casting picks with Kate and Alec, they would go full-on with their political stuff. I suspect that… people at NBC are really nervous about their long-standing relationship with Trump.

Update: Donald Trump has chimed in on the SNL spoofs, because I guess he has nothing better to do. Keep in mind that he HOSTED SNL last year.

A few days ago I was wondering if they were going to have “Jaws” music playing when they spoofed the debate.

  2. Jenns says:

I thought that was pretty funny. Alex does a great Trump.

  3. Esmom says:

Funny, I think they both did a great job and are pretty uncanny with their resemblances. I liked the little Ken Bone sideshow, too.

    • Chetta B. says:

I think it’s great too. He just has a knot in his face because he’s being mocked. And rightfully so. I think he’s a cruel and nasty man and I’m glad I don’t live in the U.S.

  4. als says:

NBC also cancelled the Law&Order: SVU Trump inspired episode. Apparently, they will air it after election day. I don’t get what they’re doing but they look like poor losers.

  5. Eve says:

    *sigh*

    The videos don’t play here.

  6. JudyK says:

I took a nap late yesterday so I’d be awake for SNL. Wasn’t sure how they were going to handle it, but it was brilliant satire! I could watch the opening sketches all day long…hilarious!!!! Alex and Kate are perfection.

  7. minx says:

Melanianade was brilliant. Those women were perfect.

  8. Sullivan says:

    Baldwin isn’t orange enough.

  9. Kitten says:

So funny but I agree with some of your concerns, Kaiser. Baldwin’s version of Trump is actually endearing compared to the real Trump, who is a genuine monster.

  10. MellyMel says:

This was hilarious and of course, OF COURSE, Trump thinks this is a “hit job” and proof that this election is rigged! Cause if he loses, he’ll blame it on an inside job constructed by the media rather than him being a creepy cheeto dusted troll unfit to be president. What a joke!

    • boredblond says:

It couldn’t possibly be because he’s insulted women, immigrants, the disabled.,and is polling at about 1% among African Americans..no..gotta be the media. Nothing worse than a bully turned whiner.

    • LoveIsBlynd says:

Such a classic narcissist borderline- he projects his own blaring flaws onto others- calling SNL “unfunny”, Hillary “crooked” Bill and “abuser” and of course everyone on planet earth “piggy”.

  11. cakecakecake says:

They did a great job, I was cracking up and Alec has him nailed. LOL!

  12. Coconut says:

Note the time stamp on Donald’s tweet: 4:14 am !!

    • Persephone says:

The embedded tweet shows the time it was posted in your time zone, for me it shows 9pm. So it would have been about 7am in NY I think.

  13. Jayna says:

I thought the SNL second debate skit was really fantastic. I thought it nailed him on his racism. The Melania Lemonade skit was meh, except the end when Trump told poor Tiffany to stay behind.

  14. Amanda DG says:

Alec is brilliant as Trump. Of course Bone was there. I don’t understand why he became a web sensation.

  15. Karina says:

The SNL skits are really funny until one realizes that the spoofs are eerily close to reality.

    • Twink says:

Yes, Trump supporters, are you gonna believe the LAMEstream media when they lie and say the election is Nov 8th or are you gonna listen to your cult leader as it came out of his mouth that it’ll be Nov 28th?

  16. Juluho says:

Trump doing Baldwin/Hammond doing Trump now. It’s so meta, I’m inclined to believe we are actually living in the matrix.
I’m about as tall is Hilary, which is to say really short. During the debate I hate second hand anxiety over the power posturing Trump was engaging in. Nothing makes me more anxious than men being in my personal space. I’ve tried to explain it to people but unless you are small I don’t think you really get it, it’s totally animalistic. You’re body is screaming danger and releasing all this fun fight or flight hormones. It’s deeply unsettling.

  17. tracking says:

Kate McKinnon is on fire. She is an absolute hoot as HRC.

  18. Goobie says:

Trump mopped the floor with her.f

He won hands down. But, here you have every media outlet except two totally biased and misreporting or cherry picking the stories, because guess what: The Democrats are even more corrupt than the Republicans. The Clintons are a shti stain on American politics just like Bush.
