How much did you cringe through Benedict Cumberbatch’s ‘Mad Libs’ skit?

Do you want to wince about Benedict Cumberbatch today? If so, keep reading. If you are a true-blue Cumberbitch, you might want to avert your eyes. I’ve always said and believed that Benedict is meant for talk shows in a way that Tom Hiddleston just isn’t. Benedict knows how to moderate himself and read the room, and he’s rarely “extra.” His appearances on the Graham Norton Show and some of the American talk shows are wonderful examples of this. He’s charming, funny and he can deliver an off-the-cuff quip. Tom Hiddleston, on the other hand, seems desperate, needy and trying-too-hard whenever he does anything on a talk show.

So, I don’t relish saying this, but Benedict Cumberbatch’s appearance on the Tonight Show last night made me cringe harder than anything Hiddles has ever done. Part of it isn’t even Bendy’s fault, it’s Jimmy Fallon’s fault for being a drunk child who can only play “games” rather than sit still for 10 minutes and interview someone properly. Then again, Bendy agreed to it. And it bombed. The first part is fine, it’s just Benedict saying random words. But by the time they get to the “Mad Libs Skit,” it’s just brutal in its lack of humor.

*CRINGE*

Jesus. That American accent, y’all. It’s rough. It’s so bad that I had to turn it off. Is this going to be the problem with Doctor Strange too? I’m worried. I’m also really worried about Saturday Night Live tomorrow, because if this was a preview… my God.

Fallon did interview Benedict properly before this though – this is your palate cleanser because some of us need it.

I otter know who he is but I just can’t place what show I know him from…..

  2. Tough Cookie says:

I am ashamed to say this was one of the funniest skits I have ever seen. (I’m not a Fallon fan so that must be saying something?) And he was charming and funny during the interview…I was actually surprised.

  3. Locke Lamora says:

Jimmy Fallon is the worst talk show host in the history of mankind.

  4. Margo S. says:

I actually thought that was hilarious. His accent isn’t horrible. It’s more massachusetts/rhode island then new York. I was laughing during it. Very entertaining!

  5. Jezza says:

I thought it hilarious! So funny!!

  6. Guesto says:

    Ben was actually really funny!

    Fallon is seriously awful though.

  7. YupYepYam says:

I didnt cringe at all. It was pretty funny. His deliberate bad accent I think is part of the comedy.

    • Timbuktu says:

Yes, and his accent here was not much (or at all) like his accent in Dr. Strange, I thought. I think it was deliberately bad and different.

  8. RuddyZooKeeper says:

I thought it was funny enough to laugh out loud, actually. The editing was distracting though. But we like Mad Libs at my house. It’s Fallon who makes me cringe and I always end up feeling sorry for his guests.

Doctor Strange is excellent! Benedict really set the bar for marvels’ superheroes. You really dont want to miss this movie, am actually planning to watch it again some time next weekdays.

    • Timbuktu says:

How did he set the bar, exactly?
I saw the movie yesterday and I was disappointed. I really wanted to like it, but I felt like it was very rushed, the story is very cartoonish and lacks the nuance that I expect from good adult entertainment. Yes, they had a great cast, but the cast did not have much to work with.
Even the special effects weren’t as mind-blowing as I expected: the space folding was cool enough, but going into the darkness was not particularly impressive, I thought.

      • iralagi says:

in terms of the casts, doctor strange is better than any marvels’ movies. I dont think the story is cartoonish, and in fact I did really enjoy some dialogues in it.
I almost forgot how good benedict is as an actor until I watch him again in Doctor Strange. I really like him, but never really follow his works. Honestly, I cant recall any marvels’ actors who is as good as benedict, except Edward Norton for Hulk (unfortunately, they no longer cast him as hulk. It’s really a shame). Both are very good in showing so many nuances of emotions. I didnt get that from Captain America or Thor.

I thought the film was visually stunning. As MCU plots go, it wasn’t one of the better ones, a bit too basic. Mads’s villain was not much more developed than Chris Eccleston’s Malekth and his reasons for his actions weren’t clear. Michael Stuhlbarg could have had more than two lines of dialogue. Rachel MacAdams part seemed to consist of being startled, which she did well enough. Benedict Wong and Chiwetel could have been more developed. Cumberbatch’s Harrison Ford imitation was all over the place. But the visuals are the reason to see this one. In 3D IMAX. And the cloak had the most personality of any of the characters. Really liked the cloak

      • Timbuktu says:

        @iralagi
I enjoyed some lines as well, not sure there were enough of them to really call them “dialogue”, but 3 chuckles do not make a great movie IMO.
I thought Hiddleston was great as Loki, and I don’t think I would’ve ever gotten hooked on BC if I saw him as Strange only.

        @Lightpurple
I think that visuals were so overhyped, it was hard for me to be blown away by them, especially in our era when stunning visuals are so often the priority of blockbusters, so this felt kind of derivative.
I agree with you on everything else, though, including the cloak, the cloak needs its own movie, I say! 🙂

      • mimismiles says:

I just saw it today. It didn’t blow me away but I didn’t hate it. It’s just another chapter in the Marvel story. The effects were stunning for the most part but could be very distracting at times. I thought the actors were great. Cumberbatch is a good Dr Strange, but the accent/nasal tone was getting under my skin by the end of the movie. If I watch it again it will be after it’s on TV and only because nothing else is on.

  10. Betsy says:

I thought it was funny and I usually hate these talk show skits. I also liked his promo for SNL.

  11. Timbuktu says:

I watched Dr. Strange last night. He did a decent job. There were a few times I felt he was “off”, as in the way he said “charity”, for example (chah-rity, whereas most Americans would say charity with an “a” as in “apple”), and “neurosurgeon” had something funny going on, probably because of all the “r”-s that he complained about yesterday (when he said he struggled with “sorcerer”).
But I was so tuned into his accent, I am not at all sure I would’ve noticed those things if I had not been paying such a close attention and if I didn’t know his natural accent so well (thanks to re-watching Sherlock).

  12. Cee says:

We can only recognise standard american.
I lived in the US and was able to identify some, but yes, it’s not THAT important.

However his boston accent was terrible and should be deleted from all archives.

  13. eto says:

Conversationally, I don’t care about accents. If I’m watching a film where an actor is butchering an accent however…that bothers me and I don’t believe that’s an American-only sentiment. Folks get annoyed at people doing poor European or UK accents as well.

  14. Spiderpig says:

No Hiddles thread at present. May I thread-jack to inform you there are rumours Tom is going to be starring in the new Royal Court play ‘The Ferryman’?

No idea if true but I have tix to first performance anyway (bc I see everything at the Court).

    • Lightpurple says:

With Sam Mendes directing and set in the 80s. Sounds interesting. And late spring so after Early Man and any involvement with Avengers filming, so the timing works

    • TotallyBiased says:

      Thanks, Spiderpig!
(And to keep this inline with the topic, I personally did find attacking a giant stuffed animal rather extra.)

    • MI6 says:

      That’s amazing!! Thank you!
Depending on the outcome of the horror that is this US election, I may be living in London by then.😓
Just saw Dr Strange and loved it…his accent does go in and out, but he had a lot of fun with the role. His self-deprecating portrayal seemed almost a play on his own legendary “poshness.” I thought he was great.

    • lightpurple says:

And website says the play is sold out for its scheduled run.

      • MI6 says:

Way to burst my ex-pat bubble, LP.

      • lightpurple says:

Sorry. Maybe they’ll release more tickets for sale as it gets closer to the opening?

      • MI6 says:

        Better 😉
We need SOMETHING to look forward to.

      • Grace says:

@ M16 You can try to see if you have get day ticket on Mondays.

But seriously how can a play that’s showing in April already had tickets sold out now? I’ve never seen anything like it at Royal Court.

@ Spiderpig, can you provide some insight to this?

      • TotallyBiased says:

Well color me confused. Near as I can tell, tickets just went on sale Friday. And were only available via phone? So they sold out AND the webpage framer was updated within a span of hours, all based purely on playwright and director?
        Wow.

  15. Sixer says:

Ack, I dunno. Unless we’re in Dick van Dyke territory, I think people get unnecessarily pissy about accents, too.

Sarah Paulson is currently doing a Brit accent in American Horror Story. While it most certainly isn’t Dick van Dyke territory, you’d never think she was British. You just think she’s an American actor doing a Brit accent. And I’m not entirely sure what Kathy Bates is channelling there but it’s definitely not authentic. It doesn’t really matter. It’s just an ironic horror-type show that is quite fun to watch. Slightly missed accents just add to the fun.

That said, I don’t mind people getting unnecessarily pissy about accents on here because I love accents and the pissy leads to some interesting conversations about them. I learned loads on here during the first season of Fargo. And now my ears are attuned to an accent I’d never have distinguished otherwise.

    • Timbuktu says:

But what do you think about the segment? The consensus seems to be that it’s funny, not cringe-worthy. I wish he didn’t say the f-word, I would’ve shown it to a kid I tutor, I think he would have liked it a lot.

    • Sixer says:

ETA – comment I was replying to went walkies. Sorry to look like a non sequitur.

ETA x 2. Oh. I don’t know what’s happened. Ignore me. Usually best.

    • Lightpurple says:

His Billy Bulger accent was Dick Van Dyke territory. His attempt at Harrison Ford in Dr Strange isn’t good but not Dick Van Dyke territory

  16. Joanie says:

Interesting he said “Ukraine” for country considering his dating past, LOL.

  17. Lolo says:

I thought it was very funny

  18. virginfangirl says:

I thought he was very funny.

  19. Tara says:

Omg I’m still laughing. That was… wait for it… *awesome*. Can’t understand how it would seem cringeworthy.

So, instead of the “what 3 people would u like to have dinner with” game, I think the new thing should be “what 3 people would u like to do madlibs with?” I definitely would love to do madlibs with bendy.

  20. LinaLamont says:

Nothing cringe-worthy about it on BCs end. I laughed out loud… especially, “gyrating just half a millimeter away from the crime scene” and “where were you the night of Hanukkah”. Watching this clip beats the hell out of watching the news.
