Pres. Obama called President-Elect Trump, invited Trump to the White House

wenn29979455

Oh, God. I just realized that the Obamas are staying in Washington, DC after President Trump’s inauguration. They’ve taken a house in DC so that Sasha can finish high school with her friends. Oh, God. I mean, of course it occurred to me how brutal this was going to be, but JFC. NBC’s Katy Tur reports:

And this too:

Pres. Obama’s call to Trump probably came a few hours after Hillary’s concession call. I don’t want to think about what Obama’s state of mind was. I don’t want to think about how Obama probably cried, and you know Michelle cried too. JFC. And now the smooth handover of power, and the business of a transition. Will President-Elect Trump shake hands with the sitting president? Will Trump even go to DC to meet with Pres. Obama at Obama’s invitation?

Politico calls the election a “rebuke” of the Obama legacy, and everyone already believes that everything Obama did in eight years is about to be taken away. I don’t want to think about it. At this point, I’m actively trying to stay numb so it doesn’t hurt so much.

Last night, as the polls were closing, Buzzfeed published their video with Obama. “No matter what happens, the sun will rise in the morning.” It’s actually pretty cloudy and overcast here.

  1. Sweden says:

It is now official. Hillary DID GET MORE VOTES THAN THE ORANGE PALPATINE. But because of the states-system – he won……………………………………

    • Scarlett says:

Do you have the source for that? I would like to share. Thank you!

    • Louise177 says:

If true that happened with Gore too in 2000. The vote was close. It seems unfair to win the votes but lose the electoral college.

      • paolanqar says:

I wish Gore had won back then. Climate change was his priority and it would have involved everything else. Every single decision.

    • Lucy2 says:

This year I turned 40 years old. This was my sixth time voting for president. And this is now TWICE in my adult life that the candidate with the most votes lost. The first time didn’t work out so well. I’m terrified to see what this one does.

    • Kasia says:

Man screwed by the electoral college and third party candidate/s again. Time is a freaking circle.

    • Lady Mimosa says:

Electoral college, that is how it works, glad Hillary conceded quickly. She knew she was behind in her internal polls, which is why she kept campaigning.

    • JudyK says:

Sweden is correct. I saw the numbers on TODAY earlier. Hillary did get the most votes.

    • Fire Rabbit says:

And the Majority get to be downtrodden by the Minority regime. Again. They ran this country into the ground and destabilized the world the last time, leaving a legacy of intolerance, poverty, violence, drugs and war. Now they have an even stronger chokehold on America? No checks. No balances. They’ll never let it go this time, they’ll spend the next 4years making sure of it. They can amend the Constitution anyway they want because they control enough State legislatures and will own the SCOTUS too. How does this happen in a supposed democracy? Forget second and third parties. We’ve become a one and only one party fauxmocracy.

  2. Kasia says:

Any progress he made will be erased now. He must be devastated.

As much as the Orange Demon sucks I’m equally worried about Mike Pence. He’s one of the most homophobic, anti-women’s healthcare politicians around today. I just can’t believe all the progress we made was literally for nothing.

    • Prettykrazee says:

I am utterly disgusted by Trumps win and worried about my safety. But I’m even more scared about Mike Pence and the Republican majority. I’m not that worried about them repealing the ACA. That’s all talk. They are not going to take healthcare away from 20 million people. They are not going to overturn Roe vs Wade outright. But I’m scared they are going to chip away at its access. And appoint a Supreme Court judge that will let all those stupid anti-choice laws through. You know what a Paul Ryan budget looks like? Get ready America because you are going to find out next year. And get prepared for privatized Social Security. I don’t even want to think what his presidency will do to the rest of the world.

      • addie says:

I can tell you. I had a text from a gay friend tonight who was walking home. A Trump supporter, celebrating the win all the way in Australia, shouted to him, ‘Faggot’. The women haters, the Jew-baiters, the homophobes, the racists, now have permission to punch, kick and grab you, me and anyone they don’t like.

I agree, the Pence lot will be more dangerous. They will seize this opportunity to overturn everything, and return the US to the Leave-it-to-Beaver 1950’s. How smart Americans activate and respond is anyone’s guess but it will be a sight to see.

Trump will disappoint. He has no plan to restore any semblance of prosperity to those who have put their faith in him. I doubt he will last the full term and will soon face impeachment when it all goes sour. So now that he has won the prize his ego so desired, is Trump legally required to release his latest tax returns, reveal his business dealing with Russia, have his health properly assessed and made public? As president is he obliged to now?

      • Prettykrazee says:

@addie There aren’t any laws in place that require Trump to release any of that information. Individual tax returns and medical records are private information and protected by the law. We will only get to see them if he deigns to release them.

    • Lady Mimosa says:

He did not make any progress in the last 8 years, the young people who voted for him stayed home. He lost the democrat congress over the ACA now the ACA is toast.

      • Prettykrazee says:

The ACA was a dog whistle. Something the Republicans used to rile up their base. Is it perfect? No. But instead of crying about, maybe the republicans should have worked with him to make it better. Obama accomplished a lot during his presidency and would have accomplished more if he was hindered by the do nothing congress. Here are a few things I can think of. I kept it short.
        1. The ACA
        2. Saved the Auto Industry
        3. Repealed Don’t Ask Don’t Tell
        4. Legalize Gay Marriage
        5. Killed Osama bin Laden
        6. Signed Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform
        7. Passed Credit Card Reform
        8. Signed Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act
        9. Signed the Hate Crimes Prevention Act
        10. Released New Fuel Efficiency Laws

    • mellie says:

You are right about Pence and being from Indiana, we learned nothing and elected yet another Republican Governor…ugh.

    • Mary Mary says:

Obama gave a gracious welcome and invite to Trump and promised an orderly handover.

Obama’s White House staff looked so sad and dismayed. just like some of us feel today. I hope the transition goes well for Obama’s White House staff and for our country as well.

      http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3921050/We-rooting-Donald-Obama-congratulates-Trump-victory-says-country-unite-new-president.html

      Prayers for us all.

  3. lightpurple says:

Vladimir Putin has also reached out and wants to meet with his puppet BEFORE the inauguration. Well done, Trump supporters. What type of health care system does Russia have?

  4. Bichon says:

I’m saddened and scared, and I’m a white ex-English teacher. The world is turning right, and it’s scary, but we can’t “let the bastards get us down.” Hopefully Trump screws up before he blows us up.

    • Lady Mimosa says:

Bichon, you will be fine, because you are white. I am black have been scared many times when I was laid off, don’t think Trump cares about the schools either way. Why are you so scared.

      • lightpurple says:

Being white does not mean she will be fine. There are plenty of elderly white women living in poverty. Paul Ryan plans to make life a lot more difficult for them and Trump will go along. There are plenty of reasons for fear.

      • SusanneToo says:

Perhaps because she cares about this country and ALL the people who will be negatively affected by this?

      • susanne says:

I am white and am not going to be okay. I desperately need to keep my health care. I had better not get pregnant from an assault in this culture with a president who doesn’t think my body belongs to me.
I need my kids home and safe, not in world war three.
I’m also a member of the human race, and things that happen to other people hurt me, too.
        I am not ok.
Respectfully disagreeing. This is not a good morning. Hugs to everyone who is sad, afraid, hurting.

      • Annetommy says:

The so called alt right, who seem the same old fascist right to me, hate Jews at least as much as they hate POC. Don’t dismiss people’s fears in a offhand fashion. And worst case scenarios, nuclear bombs are colourblind.

      • lucy2 says:

I’m white, and I’m scared shitless. For women, for people of color, for the LGBT community. For the environment, and the economy, and the Supreme Court, and how the rest of the world is going to react.

  5. Malibu Stacy says:

Serious question but why did she concede so quickly? I doubt the provisional ballots were counted. Not sure if that would have made much of a difference at this point though.

    • Erika says:

Pennsylvania wasn’t going her way (99% counted by then), and Michigan wasn’t looking good at all either. Why delay the inevitable?

    • Christin says:

She was losing counties that had gone blue in 2012. It was close, but pretty much over around midnight Eastern.

    • Va Va Kaboom says:

I also wonder how much the controversy over Trump’s refusal to promise to accept the election results influenced her decision. It probably was the least important reason, but I think it may have helped to speed up her concession.

  6. Erika says:

“Will President-Elect Trump shake hands with the sitting president? Will Trump even go to DC to meet with Pres. Obama at Obama’s invitation?”

Oh, stop it. Trump was completely classy last night.

With the low bar you insist on setting for him, you’re making it very easy for him to surpass expectations. Don’t you think maybe that is one of the reasons why he won last night?

  7. CoKatie says:

And I saw four horsemen …

  8. Jessie says:

It’s rainy and cold here. I’m in an office in England with Brexit voters who keep making fun of what just has happened, and I want to punch everyone and everything.

    • Pip says:

Oh god, Jessie, I feel your pain. I was in a similar office, the day after Brexit, & found it very hard not to scream.

It’s groundhog day isn’t it. Bad times.

      • Jessie says:

They really have no idea what they have wrought. This is ten times worst than Brexit, I think. I’m seriously thinking of changing my indefinite remain status to just permanent citizen in the UK.

    • CC says:

Yeah in the same boat as you guys, and I have lots of family and connections to the US. Just feel gutted, I actually decided to stay at home today and call in sick.

    • MI6 says:

It’s raining here in NY too.
It’s like God is crying on us.

    • SusanneToo says:

It’s raining in Mobile for the first time since September. The sky is crying.

  9. grabbyhands says:

I have been ping ponging between anger, grief, horror and disgust all night, I think I managed about three hours sleep maybe and right now I have a splitting headache and I feel like I’m going to be sick-and I didn’t even drink. I did chain smoke all night which is a habit I have been trying to kick. I’m starting to cry as I write this.

One of the things that I find most stomach churning about this is that Obama has to be gracious to this hateful fascist pig. Eight years of he and his beautiful family leading with grace and dignity against an obstructionist house and senate and against an ugly, racist citizenry and now it is dust. All for nothing because apparently this god forsaken country really hasn’t progressed past 1950, apparently, I don’t just blame racism and sexism however, I blame a lazy electorate that wants to scream about change but does absolutely nothing to work for it. Everyone who made false equivalencies, everyone who boasted about not voting or writing in names-this is on you too. You want a revolution? Grow the f**k up and out your money where your mouth is.

I am so ashamed of being an American. I will never fly my country’s flag again.

    • Div says:

I feel so bad for Obama and Hillary and I’m honestly really f*cking annoyed by that Politico article. It seems to be blaming Hillary’s loss on Obama. Hillary lost because Trump got a bunch of racist and sexist nutcases in a frenzy to vote who normally don’t vote. Somehow, he got that base to turn out. Hillary lost because this nation is sexist and racist as f*ck and they couldn’t deal with a woman succeeding a black man. Hillary lost because she had a lot of baggage, a lot that wasn’t her fault but some that was. I think the biggest clincher was stupid horrible die in a trash fire Comey releasing that letter. I remember some journalist freaking out because the false “likely criminal” indictment story spread from Fox to be on several news sources and he was right. That effected twenty million early voters

Right now I am so angry. My black as* is especially worried for every woman, every LGBTQ person, every POC, every disabled person, everyone who is not Christian, etc. and I’m even worried for America in general (although I’m furious) because this orange fascist is going to destroy our economy and lead us into more war.

      • addie says:

Every woman, every LGBTQ person, every POC, every disabled person, everyone who is not Christian is in danger. Comey has a lot to answer for.

      • hmmm says:

        +1000000000

Not only worried for America, but for the world.

      • Patty says:

I really don’t think this election was so much about Obama as just blanket hatred of the other my a large segment of whites. And by other, I mean the “elites”, the blacks, the mexicans, the gays, etc. Also a rebuke against Political Correctness. That’s all it was anger. Not hope. They don’t really care about making America Great Again (ha) so much as they are angry and just wanted a last f you to everyone else.

Obama has an approval rating of almost 60% so I don’t believe for one second Hillary’s loss was his fault. And I’m going to piss off a lot of people and be honest. This would have been a cakewalk for pretty much anyone not named Clinton, so I am still disappointed that Hillary ran to begin with and with the DNC for all of their shenanigans. Sanders was never going to win either. If a moderate Dem had run (think Tim Kaine) we would be having a completely different conversation right now.

    • SusanneToo says:

After a year or two of the idiot and his vulgar family the Obama years will look like a paradise on earth. I hope journalism outlets will continue to investigate Crookedtrump U., Crookedtrump Foundation, Crookedtrump tax returns, Crookedtrump illegal forays into Cuba, Crookedtrump ties to Russian hacking, Assaultertrump rape charges and every other slimy thing his tiny orange hands have touched. Come on, Free Press while you’re still free.

      • addie says:

Amen. Can CrookedTrump be compelled to reveal tax, business dealings, etc? As president, does he have to reveal these things? Journalists have to marshall their collective skills and relentlessly expose every aspect of Trump’s life, and also that of Pence and others.

      • crtb says:

Doesn’t matter. His supporter are not interested. They didn’t care before the election and they could care less afterwards

  10. Sage says:

Politics is not my game. Obama has to shake his hand and congratulate Trump after the complete disrespect he showed him for 8 years. Ugh. Not a sore loser but I just couldn’t do it.

    • Kristen820 says:

Of course Obama congratulated the winner. He’s a class act.

      • Esmom says:

Yes, I’m not surprised at all that he would be gracious.

      • GreenTurtle says:

Neither am I. Obama probably wants a quiet word with him to try and impart some wisdom and sense of reality about what Trump is about to take on. It’s admirable and in the service of the people.

    • Rachel says:

      The Obamas go high.

      I couldn’t do it.

    • susanne says:

I would puke, and my large, strong, female hand would swallow his.
It’s a matter of putting America first, respect for the office, the process *that failed us.
I just hope there was some stank eye involved.

      • hmmm says:

You can respect the office and not the person. Graciousness is lost on a psychopath. It only stokes his ego, looks like weakness to him. Obama won’t make a difference. You can go high to your detriment too. But at least you’ll still feel good about yourself.

  11. Bex says:

What has just happened?! Even after Brexit, I hoped, I so hoped, that America would reject such hideous sexism and racism. Yet here we are, and now Obama has to hand over the presidency to somebody endorsed by the Ku Klux Klan.

    • Nadia says:

stop conflating Brexit with sexism and racism – im sick of it – it just becomes a punching match between all the groups at the bottom of the pile rather than the people at the top who are the REAL cause for concern – people get disenfranchised, get duped by the media and make a decision for change regardless of how bad it may become because they are desperate

  12. Neelyo says:

I can’t bring myself to watch his acceptance speech.

Did he acknowledge that he is to be President of all Americans or was it more of the same, ‘I, I, me, me, me’?

    • Dal says:

I’m with you. I’m avoiding it. I’m putting an embargo on any news today, I just can’t do it. I’m looking at my daughter who is two and I want to cry

    • GreenTurtle says:

He did say that he’s the president of all Americans and that it’s time to reunite. He also complimented Clinton on her campaign and commitment. His supporters couldn’t figure out how to react. Very sporadic, confused clapping and random incoherent jeering. 😆 The speech wasn’t bad until he got to thanking his political supporters, like Giuliani and Christie. Then the word salad we all know came spilling out.

  13. CornyBlue says:

My heart goes out to all Americans who did their best and voted for HRC. I am sorry you have to suffer for idiots.

    • Esmom says:

This nasty woman is not letting this news break me.

    • JudyK says:

It’s being reported that uneducated voters got Trump the win, plus we must remember to “thank” Director Comey.

I am a vegetable today, completely comatose.

      • hmmm says:

Third party votes got Trump the win.

      • LLjd says:

Plenty of educated good people voted for Trump. The elites of both sides are out of touch and just don’t get it.

The future is bright for all, just you wait and see.

I’m hopeful the condescension and insults to the other side will stop. The beauty of the US is we all don’t have to think the same and we can and should get along.

      • swak says:

hmmm: third party votes did not give the election to Trump. Hillary did not win in some states that were won by the Democrats in 2012. Some of those are: Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania & Florida. There may be more but didn’t want to take the time to find them all.

      • SusanneToo says:

He was elected by people who don’t care that he defrauded and/or ruined small businessmen, don’t care that he screwed investors in his casino failures, don’t care that he used the investors’ losses on his personal tax returns thereby paying no taxes for two decades, don’t care that he barged into the dressing rooms of teenage pageant contestants, don’t care that he dodged the draft four times and never served in any capacity to benefit people, don’t care that he vulgarly insulted POC, Muslims, women, Jews, Mexicans, don’t care that he is the pin-up boy of the KKK and Putin’s puppet. That’s who elected this sack of sh1t.

  14. MI6 says:

The US party system is totally f**ked.
The only thing to do now is to love harder and live better. Have each other’s backs. Embrace compassion. Stand together. Rise above.
Then, despite what happened last night, hate WON’T win.

    • hmmm says:

Don’t rise above. It accomplishes nothing. The only thing to do now is to speak up! At every turn.

  15. anonymous says:

I cannot believe she lost states that were blue since I dont even know how many years, like how is that even possible ?

    • original kay says:

      It’s interesting, isn’t it?
It’s like his statement “If I don’t win the system is rigged” has an entirely different meaning this morning.

      • anonymous says:

I think that we all sadly underestimated how unpopular she (also) was. I don’t think Trump would have won against Bernie Sanders.

      • hmmm says:

Yes he would have beaten someone who is a socialist and Jewish given his white supremacist base. At the time Bernie wasn’t important enough to smear. The only thing in Bernie’s favour is that he is a privileged white male.

    • Karen says:

Sadly, people just really really didn’t like her. The media covered for her, the positive rhetoric was intended to create a groundswell of support. It didn’t. 🙁

I will hold my shock in check until Trump actually does something. Right now we’ve had a lot of words. But they are just that. Words. Possibilities. We’ve had a dose of democratic reality. Now we will see what this democracy (in the House, the Senate and the White House) will create.

There are Republicans who are centrists in thinking and voting. Who are rational and reasonable. They will act as a moderating influence on our orange tanned Commander in Chief.

    • Linda says:

Are you saying that in all these states the results were rigged. How exactly would that happen if that is what you are saying.

  16. JudyK says:

I just have to say this. Kellyanne Conway was on TODAY this morning, gloating, of course. Matt asked her a SIMPLE, DIRECT question, which was whether Donald Trump would finally admit that the election was not rigged and never has been rigged. Her response, “I think what he meant by that was BLAH BLAH BLAH.”

OMG, get off the air before I decimate my set. I cannot look at this woman for one more second of my life.

  17. JudyK says:

I’m in complete bitch mode this morning, so I have one last comment. Could Savannah Guthrie quit grinning from ear to ear this morning on TODAY? She is on my LAST NERVE.

This is a very somber moment in history.

  18. JulP says:

Re: undoing Obama’s legacy, what’s sad is that many Americans seem to have a tenuous grasp of cause and effect. They don’t seem to understand that Republican policies over the last 30 years (tax cuts for the wealthy, crippling labor unions, outsourcing jobs, deregulating industries) are the direct cause of the problems they are facing (stagnating income, no money for retirement, loss of manufacturing jobs, etc.). They elected Trump ostensibly because they want change that will improve their lot in life, but in doing so, they have guaranteed that their lives will only continue to get worse. The only people who will remain unscathed are wealthy white men.

I am honestly so angry and disgusted right now. It’s bad enough that 47% of voters are ok with Trump’s misogyny, bigotry, and racism, but apparently these voters (who also ensured that Republicans would retain control over the Senate) are also ok with the decidedly anti-American, treasonous actions of the Republican-controlled Congress throughout Obama’s presidency. I mean, these Republicans threatened to essentially *end* the Supreme Court if their candidate didn’t get elected! And most Americans are ok with that, evidently! So I guess most Americans are ok with dismantling our entire system of government and doing away with democracy entirely.

It’s truly frightening to think that many of the gains we have made as a country – labor unions, a 40 hour workweek, minimum wage, voting rights for African Americans and women, right to abortion, gay marriage, Social Security – are now in jeopardy.

  19. margie says:

My officemate (we actually share 1 office, with 1 door, not just sitting next to each other’s cubicles, so VERY close proximity) voted for Trump. She is college educated, but a total f*cking moron. She didn’t want Trump to take her guns, and didn’t want people of color to think they were equal (I can’t even start with this), she wants borders closed and all Muslims and Mexicans and Hispanics out of the country yesterday. She just tried to whitesplain Beyoncé and how Bey is actually a reverse racist, and is anti-police and anti-white people, never taking into account her white privilege and the experiences African American people have had that shaped their culture and views. She said she doesn’t think Trump supporters are racists or misogynists or homophobes, and she thinks that Democrats need to get over their views on accepting people and being PC. She can’t be reasoned with, there is no logic, and that is the way most Trump supporters are. I am trying my hardest not to cry, and not to engage with her insane arguments and baiting me to debate things that shouldn’t be debated. I am trying hard to act like I am not extremely worried about women’s rights and war and our elect’s friendliness and proximity with Russia…I don’t know, guys. It is a sad day for tolerance and decency. She keeps scrolling through her FB feed, gloating and saying how awful Democrats are, and pointing out how funny it is that people are having meltdowns and calling us all crybabies. I can’t drink at work, I have no valium…it is going to be a long day.

    • hmmm says:

A college education does not spare you from being a raging white supremacist.

    • Annetommy says:

That sounds rotten margie. I think you should tell her politely that you do not want any discussion about the election today, and ask her to respect your wishes; or tell her to eff off. Whichever is most appropriate.

    • lucy2 says:

I’m with annetommy, tell her you do not wish to discuss politics in the workplace any further. If she doesn’t respect your wishes, file a complaint with your boss or HR. I’d feel that way regardless of who won, if you don’t want to discuss it in the workplace, you shouldn’t have to.
Are you able to wear headphones while working?

    • lightpurple says:

Do not even discuss her behavior with her. Go directly to your supervisor/manager and tell her/him that you are being distracted during work by her political discussions AND that she spends work time scrolling through her Facebook page and elsewhere for political content.

  20. mkyarwood says:

Meh, well, that’s just part of the job. One Obama was born to, and one Trump was reminded he could achieve easily, with the right tactics. As stated in a comment above, he whipped the worst of America into action. Their hatred was strong enough to vote against, for the first time in awhile. I also think it’s the women who blame rape victims for being raped, who blame mistresses for affairs, who loathe their ‘weaker’ sex with a vehemency so the men in their lives with respect them are the real culprits here. How dare a woman believe she can be President? Doesn’t she know we’re worthless?

  21. jerkface says:

What did Obama call him? I hope it was a prank call.

  22. ClassyCrowley says:

Trump does not deserve to set foot in the white house, the ideas he preaches are toxic. Its been hard at working dealing with people’s happiness over Trump’s win. I have never been more grateful for social media than I am now because the people around me are so urgh. Its good to know there are still decent human beings in America.
