Lady Gaga went glam-country in Brandon Maxwell at the AMAs: lovely or tedious?

Lady Gaga was one of the biggest names at the American Music Awards last night, although if you didn’t even recognize her, I wouldn’t be surprised. The evolution of Lady Gaga’s look (or “her face”) is a fascinating thing. Gaga walked the red carpet in this Brandon Maxwell suit – Maxwell is one of her favorite designers/collaborators, and this is honestly one of the best looks I’ve seen from Maxwell. That being said, it does remind me of Madonna famously wearing a very similar white, wide-legged trouser suit more than a decade ago. There’s a reason they call her Lady Xerox! And I was thinking about this too… Madonna went through a faux-country phase as well. Remember this? Now watch Gaga’s performance:

I thought Selena Gomez looked genuinely beautiful in this custom Prada gown. Selena has had a really difficult 2016 (as have we all), so it was nice to see her at the AMAs. That being said, this dress belonged on a different red carpet. It’s a Golden Globes dress. It’s a Vanity Fair Oscar party dress. It’s not an AMAs dress.

Hannah Davis, who is maybe best known for being married to Derek Jeter. She wore Zuhair Murad and while this looks okay in photos, it did not look good in motion on the red carpet. The bra part was the wrong color and she could barely walk in this.

Ciara is SO pretty and her style is SO tacky. Bless her heart. Ciara is knocked up by her new husband Russell Wilson, but she flew solo at the AMAs. She wore this Stephane Rolland dress which looks like something Julia Roberts would have worn to the premiere of Mystic Pizza.

I do worry that Hailee Steinfeld is too grown-up too fast, although that might be because we first got to know her when she was just a girl. She’s 19 years old and now she wears sh-t like this Elie Saab onesie. Sigh…

Janelle Monae has a commitment to wearing strange styles, and I’ve gotten to the point where I appreciate her uniqueness. She chose this Marc Jacobs ensemble which would be a total disaster on someone else. On Janelle, it totally works.

She got a boob job for sure. Good for her.

    • detritus says:

      They look good, right?
I very much doubt that’s the only thing she’s tweaked.

Hell if I had her disposable income, I’d be trying to convince people my face was born that way too.

  2. BonnieJean says:

Where is the glamor? Where is the talent? Lady Gagas’ boob job is botched.

  3. paolanqar says:

New boobs or some very strong tape. Her boobs are always so droopy even if they are small.

    • Veronica says:

They don’t look droopy to me – just sitting where natural breasts do, which is closer to a tear drop shape than rounded. The only women I’ve ever known with those pert, upturned breasts past their teen years were all tiny women. Past a B cup, gravity is just inevitable.

  4. Alleycat says:

I love Selena’s look. Yeah, it’s a bit dressier but that’s because all the other stars are wearing scraps of materials compared to her.

As a Gaga fan, even I was concerned when she entered her country phase. But I remembered that even in Born this Way, she wanted to do country remixes of her songs. She also made You and I which is arguably country music-influenced. I think the white suit/Brandon Maxwell thing is based heavily off her Oscars look (I read somewhere that it was political too) but you cannot deny that Madonna has an eerily similar look (with the hat and all)

Secondly, I noticed her breasts look perkier. Boob lift or duct tape?

    • annaloo. says:

I don’t know… that hat/ensemble is more Alexis Morelli Carrington Colby Dexter Rowan to me, than country.

    • Tiffany :) says:

She is wearing a white pantsuit as a nod to Hillary Clinton! White is the color of the suffragettes. It is amazing how people can take anything and turn it into “Madonna”.

Don’t forget “Speechless” which she sometimes played in a country style. Gaga is a fan of music, she likes playing with genres.

      • Wendy says:

Right?! Oh a decade ago Madonna wore white so Gaga is copying. pfft.
Where are all the comments that Bruno Mars’s performance was total Michael Jackson vibes?

Selena Gomez is one of the most beautiful young women alive. I truly think she’s breathtaking.

Hailee Steinfeld is also a beautiful girl. I don’t even mind the romper.

    • Janetdr says:

I think the romper is the best look in this batch (outside of the red dress which is nothing to take offense at but I get that it isn’t the best for this event )… not that is saying much.

      • Geekychick says:

I love the romper and also think it’s the best looks in this post. It’s ama and age apropriate and I’d wear the hell out of it if I was 19! 🙂

      • detritus says:

I love the colour and material on the romper. I wish there was a bit more to it, either in the leg or down the middle, but it’s hot and beautiful and Hailey’s hair and brows are making me jelly.

Madonna went through a faux-country phase as well. Remember this? Now watch Gaga’s performance:….the one glaring difference here. Gaga can sing. and I’m not even a stan.

  9. Sarah says:

Loved Gaga’s look and performance. I feel like if you try hard enough, you could link just about anything to Madonna. No matter what she does we can’t seem to let that accusation go.

  10. Chaine says:

Janelle’s outfit reminds me of Cruella Deville, but I really do like it on her! Maybe some sort of flesh colored bodysuit would have been better under the Zuhair Murad? Gaga’s ensemble is really boring, and it is not giving me a country vibe, either. More like lady at the races in the 1940’s.

  11. Julie says:

She’s always tedious to me. She sounded good on her performance, but I just can’t deal with her face and mannerisms.

  12. Leah says:

    I like her suit.

  13. Veronica says:

I think she looks pretty nice, actually. Dramatic without being ridiculous. I really like her new album, though, so I might be biased right now.

  14. Ivy says:

Hailee is SO THIRSTY. Selena was stunning and her acceptance speech moved me to tears. I just hope she doesn’t relapse back to coke.

  15. Laura says:

    Lady Gaga: Tedious.

  16. Louise177 says:

I must be missing something because I don’t see Gaga is country. What about this pantsuit screams country. I’ve seen a lot of celebrities where similar suits and nobody said it was country. A Million Reasons is country influenced but not close to being calling a country song. Selena Gomez looks really pretty but the dress seems out of place for AMA. It seems more appropriate for the Golden Globes or something.

  17. Bee says:

Gaga’s had a breast lift and she wants everyone to know it. That’s all I got.
