Met Gala co-chair Jennifer Lopez wore an icy Schiaparelli: love it or hate it?

It genuinely shocked me to see how many celebrities interpreted “The Garden of Time” to mean “metallics, icy, sand/beige, silver and white.” I think most people were expecting florals, colorful looks and interesting vintage. That’s not what we got. Jennifer Lopez, one of the Met Gala co-chairs, kind of got it wrong. That being said, this is one of her best red carpet looks in a while. J.Lo went with a custom Schiaparelli Couture and this is very sexy, flattering, all of it. I wish her makeup had been different, but overall, I really liked this.

Chris Hemsworth was another co-chair who did not really go for the theme. Chris and Elsa Pataky both wore Tom Ford, and Elsa wore a crown. Just… boring, really. The more I look at Chris’s look, the more Miami Vice it seems.

Phoebe Dynevor went for a woodland fairy vibe in this Victoria Beckham. I thought she looked cute, honestly. She wasn’t shooting for the moon, she just wanted to look pretty and she wanted something sort of comfortable.

    I can’t with sheer everything.

J Lo manages to make an exquisitely detailed dress look meh. It’s not bad, it’s just… meh.

    • seaflower says:

      Agreed.

    • Lolo86lf says:

I feel like J Lo has worn several versions of the same dress over the years. She needs something fresh and different. Her make up was too shiny.

      • sparrow says:

I agree. It’s getting boring on her. Two trends that annoy in general, on anyone – slip dresses and sheer.

      • Becks1 says:

Agreed. The dress isn’t bad, I just feel like we’ve seen JLo in it a dozen times before.

      • Lulu says:

Agree, JLo’s dress looks very familiar. She and the dress are beautiful. Phoebe is also beautiful.

    • ELX says:

That is an incredibly boring Schiaparelli—I’m shocked at how unspectacular it is—we’ve all seen her bits, that’s not shocking —this is just Versace from 20 years ago, but make it bland and colorless.

      • Lens says:

I thought it looked very familiar and then a website I was looking at showed all the silver, body hugging dresses she’s worn to the Met – it’s been a LOT. I don’t know when the Met theme was picked out but jlo wore a dress to a premiere (or award show) that would have been better. It was pink, over the top big and billowing and it had the fabric sewn to look like roses. Anyway her Melania squint was really on display in the red carpet.

    • Shawna says:

I’m so tired of dresses that are really about seeing the body than seeing the clothes. Some of them are pretty, but some are frankly vulgar.

      • Lulu says:

I’m with you. I don’t like vulgar. A few dresses seem like swimsuits with a huge mesh covering and calling it a dress.

    • Elizabeth says:

I wouldn’t dislike it quite so badly if the sequin design weren’t pointing directly at her crotch.

    • Snoozer says:

So I read the short story the theme is based on and a lot of these outfits make perfect sense to me.

      J-Lo’s is evoking two things:

      1) it looks like one of the glass time flowers as it dissolves and turns back time

      2) it’s delicate and therefore ephemeral – much like the sleeping beauty archived looks in the exhibition.

However, because J-Lo has done a million sheer, sparkly dresses, this is just boring. Her styling is boring. It’s a shame.

I think there were lots of very fragile fabrics in usage overall because of the whole sleeping beauty, ephemeral theme of the exhibition. They’re also representative of the fragility of art and beautiful things in the face of mass tragedy and destructive forces.

There’s lots of beige/sand because it represents the sands of time, the dusty plains the hordes are crossing and also the ruins of the villa at the end of the story.

There’re also a lot of looks that reference the main characters being nothing but statues at the end. Lots of people who look like columns.

Then there are the looks that reference decay, destruction, falling apart. Vines crawling up around the statues. In subtle and overt ways.

  2. Truthiness says:

I’d give J Lo a 3 out of ten. It gives Las Vegas, not Garden of Time. I wonder if designers get really ticked off at Anna for having a theme at all. Tom Ford looks like he hates theme dressing.

  3. Lenny says:

What I don’t get is the highlighter on the tip of the nose trend. It just looks like Rudolph had a very shiny nose.

  4. Lemons says:

After reading the short story the theme is based on, I’m not sure if bright florals should be expected. This garden was decidedly not a garden with colorful flowers (at least not the ones at the center of the story), but glass/crystal flowers…I won’t spoil the short story, but I do understand what some of the attendees are going for…Chris…no, I don’t understand.

    • nutella toast says:

@lemons I agree – the glass floral look is central to the story. I also agree with everyone that we’ve seen a version of this on JLo 3,000 times. She was gonna wear some version of this no matter what the theme was. Just make them flowers instead of chain mail or circles or something. She loves to show her hard-won body. I don’t blame her, but it’s getting redundant.

    • WiththeAmerican says:

Agree! I’m bored by this dress because Jlo wears a variation of it constantly, but the short story the theme is based on has the man picking crystal flowers in the garden so for that, it seems partially on point.

As always, she looks amazing. But this wasn’t a win.

  5. DeeSea says:

I think JLo looks great (except for the makeup), but I do see what others are saying. So far, my fav is Demi Moore in Harris Reed. Thank you for the great Met Gala coverage, Kaiser and Celebitchy team! It’s so much fun to watch the new posts come in as I keep refreshing the site.

  6. kirk says:

To be completely fair to JLo, the Met Gala theme is “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” while the official dress code is “The Garden of Time.” So does JLo’s look fit with the theme? Yeah it totally does with the wings rising out of her rack. Does she meet the “Garden of Time” dress code with silverized flowers, and what appears to be leaves arranged on her translucent dress? Yeah, totally.

  7. Cel2495 says:

J lo looks like she always does. The dress is gorgeous but not special on her. Her makeup is terrible by the way as well as her hair. I also can’t anymore with her open mouth poses… why continues to do that? Is not sexy!

    • sparrow says:

Yes! The sexy mouth is annoying as all hell.

    • Giddy says:

With JLo all I could see was that “I’m so sexy” open mouth and a Las Vegas dress.

    • RMS says:

I can’t get over her posture, that slouch! Do her boobs pop out if she stands up straight?

    • Danbury says:

That open mouth pose ruins even the best looks. She needs to stop

      • Barbie1 says:

Lol make it stop. It looks so silly. Love the dress hate the hair. We wanted to be dazzled by the hair as well. Just a boring old bun. And it does not flatter her hairline.

    • Justme says:

I agree with your comment and particularly agree with the mouth open, squinty eye so called sexy look. I was wondering if Elsa Pataky saw Jlo and thought I can out do her with that look.

  8. Becks1 says:

I was surprised at how much I liked Phoebe’s dress. When I first saw it I didnt, but then in close ups and seeing it as she moved I thought it was beautiful. And I thought it seemed to suit her well – she doesn’t seem like she could pull off a gown like Zendaya’s, so I thought this was a good way to stay in her general comfort zone while not being boring.

  9. Mrs. Smith says:

All the white/beige reads like a ghostly “The Garden of Eternity” instead of garden of time. I was expecting more florals, pastels and vintage since the title/theme/tone was Sleeping Beauties, reawakening, gardens. JLo looks great, but more icy than reawakened. Phoebe’s light pink dress is a better fit for the theme.

  10. Eurydice says:

The Gala had two themes – The Garden of Time, which is a story that’s more than just about flowers – and an homage to the current exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, which is that fashion isn’t just frozen in an exhibit case, but worn by a living being and can be interpreted differently over time.

I’ll agree with many others here. I love JLo’s dress, but I don’t love it on her.

  11. Tessa says:

I like the gown but the bodice was not a good look.

  12. Mia4s says:

Good dress but I am not sold on the makeup.

Thor and his wife are so boring it’s almost sad. You’re a co-chair and that’s it? Zzzzzzz 😴

    • Lulu says:

I kind of liked Elsa’s look.

    • Pinkosaurus says:

I hear Anna personally approves outfits and dresses the hosts. She must not like Elsa because that gold dress is BORING and actually not flattering. Her body is insane and it looks slightly thick and a bit dumpy. She wore an almost naked sarong/neglige combo recently to a premiere so I’m sure she did not pick out that cheap looking snore.

  13. tankerbelle says:

It’s really something, how consistently bad Jlo’s make up is. Usually it’s nude lipgloss applied with a trowel. Today it’s highlighter down her nose.

  14. UpIn Toronto says:

    J-BOring.

And the face. Her consistent and constant expression of the squint and the lips parted…

Just cardboard cutout. She looks like a cardboard cutout of herself. So practiced, no fun

  15. Chantale says:

The problem with JLO is that she is not wearing anything new. The dress is beautiful but boring on JLO. But it is a style and she is sticking to it. I have no problem with a person wearing their style because that is what make them comfortable.

  16. tealily says:

Chris seemed like such an odd choice for co-chair. Is he a big fashion guy? I didn’t think so. And he got there pretty late in the red carpet too. He just didn’t seem very in to it, to me.

  17. Jasmine says:

J Lo has an amazing figure, is a beautiful woman and the dress is gorg BUT she wears this dress over and over and over. She has no range. She’s not a real fashion girlie, she’s just here to look pretty and sparkly. Always

    • Kitten says:

She’s forever the girl at the Halloween party who always has to look sexy, never funny, scary or edgy. It’s who she is and I can accept it but the Met Gala is a place to take risks and it would have been both fun and unexpected to see step out of her sparkly comfort zone.

      • tealily says:

She could really make a splash by trying just a little bit if she wanted to!

  18. Rnot says:

Look at her eyes. J.Lo looks like she hasn’t slept in weeks and the makeup can’t cover it up.

  19. Kitten says:

agree with everyone that it’s a nice dress but we’ve seen this look 8 million times on J Lo. Would have been so fun to see her switch it up but last time she did that, everyone criticized her and said she’s not a “Fashion Girl” so maybe she can’t win. Her choice of makeup and open-mouthed pose? Sigh. I don’t get it.

  20. tamsin says:

i guess one could say the look is not interesting because she’s done it so many times, that it has her signature look.

  21. Flamingo says:

off topic but she canceled her appearance on Howard Stern tomorrow. And Ben looked wasted at Tom’s Roast.

Maybe she got on a plane back to Cali to get him back in line. She just looks tired to me and does not look like someone overly excited to Co-Chair a big event like this. She did her job and GTFO.

    • Blue hair mood says:

She probably cancelled HS because she doesn’t want to be asked about her poor ticket sales. She’s struggling to sell even half the tickets in her chosen venues, IMSMR (according to the Daily Fail). More concert dates to be cancelled, I’m guessing. She already cancelled seven last month according to Forbes.

      • Flamingo says:

Howard is very good at making the guests comfortable. He wouldn’t have asked anything embarassing.

That said, years ago he would goof on her non-stop and shared some tea she was broke and had to do American Idol. Her team may have listened to some old shows and nixed it.

But my gut tells me Ben fell off the wagon again and now Jennifer L is going to find out what Jennifer G went through for years with Ben.

  22. Lilly (with the double-L) says:

I feel like I post often enough to be known as a big fan of JLo and I love the entire look. I also loved Janelle Monae’s dress. But, I shouldn’t go into a list, since there are probably separate posts. Thanks for the link to the story @Kirk, I appreciated knowing the inspiration.

  23. Jayna says:

Phoebe looked so beautiful. I love her look and the color of the gown.

Jennifer’s gown is on point for the theme, but I agree with others: the look is similar to many other gowns she’s worn. Still, she did look beautiful.

Jennifer appeared on Good Morning America yesterday morning. She looked stunning. I loved her outfit and makeup on that appearance. She was in red slacks, which I couldn’t decide what they were made of. She had on a beautiful red turtleneck. She had her hair down. I loved her earrings. The red was so flattering on her. Jennifer knocked it out of the park on GMA. She laughed a lot, and Jennifer has the most beautiful smile. It’s a lot better than the open-mouth pose she does on red carpets.

  24. JFerber says:

Worse than the open mouth on JLo, which always looks stupid and now really dated, is the ultra-smug face in the first photo. To me, that’s very off-putting. It’s her, “Yes, I am all that” face which is truly obnoxious. I think of the gorgeous movie stars from the 1930’s whose looks, faces, and dresses really WERE all that (and their talent as well) and they don’t ruin it with obnoxious, smug faces.

  25. Blue hair mood says:

JLo has a lot of pain and growth ahead of her when her celebritydom fades and she ages physically, as she’s so egocentric and narcissistic. She has so many “negative reviews” on Reddit from people who’ve interacted with her, from drivers and cabin crew to service staff. You’d think she’d be kinder to those she clearly considers to be of “lower status” as she loves to push the idea she’s some sort of underdog who “made it”. The fact her upcoming tour won’t even halfway match Madonna’s must be hard for her to stomach. Ben Affleck looks miserable these days and they haven’t been papped together for a while.

She’s an okay actor and horrible singer, and her stiff dancing is so overrated. Why is she known for her dancing? I “researched” her moves on YouTube and came to the conclusion that Britney Spears, Paula Abdul, Madonna, Sofia Boutella, etc., are far more athletic, inspiring, and interesting when they dance and they have more creative choreography than JLo, a variety of moves that don’t constantly involve shaking one’s butt.
