Loretta Lynn tried pot for the first time at 84 for her glaucoma

Loretta Lynn is 84 years young and she is not only still making music but also still touring. She’s currently promoting her new album White Christmas Blue, her first holiday album in 50 years. The cool thing about being an 84-year old icon is that you can say whatever the hell you want. Fortunately for us, what Loretta has to say is pretty entertaining. Like the fact that she was prescribed marijuana for her glaucoma so she gave it a go earlier this year. And it almost killed her.

Loretta Lynn is sitting aboard her tour bus reminiscing about old friends like Patsy Cline (“Patsy was her own woman and that’s what I adored. I thought, ‘By golly, I’m not the only one — Patsy stands up for herself too.’”) and George Jones (“I bought his old tour bus, but he’d shot through the roof and I never did get that bus to stop leaking!”). Talk turns to Willie Nelson, with whom she recently recorded a duet, “Lay Me Down,” on her Full Circle album, out earlier this year.

“He’s one of the greatest people in the whole world,” Lynn says. “I know he smokes pot, but my goodness, there’s a lot people doing a lot worse then smoking pot!” In fact, she says, she tried it herself, not six months ago. “I got glaucoma and they gave me one of these cigarettes,” she tells PEOPLE. “I took one smoke off of it and it hit me right here in the chest. I like to have died! Glaucoma is just going to have to take over.”

I love that Loretta qualified that Willie’s A-OK even though he smokes pot. Tangent: I’ve never smoked marijuana, if only because I can’t brook the smell, but I know people with both glaucoma and arthritis whose lives have been greatly improved with it. After reading the latest studies on mushrooms containing psilocybin proving effective to ease depression and anxiety, I’m happy so many ‘illegal’ substances are being reexamined for their medicinal qualities – even if they did almost kill the first lady of country music. (Ok, that could alternately be Tammy Wynette.)

Loretta is still writing albums and performing to good reviews but I want her to write a philosophy book next. She has that kind of no nonsense approach to things that I dig. Being 84, her doctors have told her to take it easy, as most octogenarians are not traipsing the country on tour buses. But when they tell her to rest, she responds, “But I’m not tired!” As for why she won’t quit working, “I don’t see no reason to quit right now.” However, it is her philosophy on exercise that makes me a card-carrying Loretta Lynn devotee. When it comes to working out, “I ain’t going to do no exercise! I hate exercise! I had six kids and got over that, so why should I worry about exercise?” Sing it from the mountaintops, Loretta!

I am pissed off about the republican uprising but they voted pot legal?! They take away most people’s freedoms but they can smoke dubies?! A guy in Washington went into a pot store with a huge swastika on his shirt and got his joint. That really, really burned me up for some reason. I just hate that they got their sick victory & can smoke it up too. It shouldn’t be this way…..

Not sure who Loretta voted but in general this chaps my hide & reminded me of it. I am all for the smoking in general……just not for Trump voters.

I assume she voted for Trump because she’s a huge Republican. So, my ESL students are afraid of being deported and we’ve lost the Supreme Court for a generation but, yay legal weed. Blergh.

      WHAT???

Please don’t take away my pot. It’s how i plan to continue to deal with the political mess we are in.

If a white supremacist likes cake, you wouldn’t make it illegal just to deprive them the pleasure. You’d be depriving many perfectly fine folks, and maybe yourself too.

Frankly it’s about time it was legal.. it baffled me that alcohol was perfectly legal, but pot wasn’t. Alcohol is more deadly, more addictive, and if i had to hang around a bunch of drunk people or high people, I’d pick high companions over drunk ones any day.

I am not disagreeing with the legalization. I voted for it every time it was on the ballot wherever I was living. It’s just not much consolation for me personally. I am glad that it’s helping you though.

My comment did not come across as I meant it. I am all for legalizing weed. What I was surprised by in this election (shouldn’t have been) was a huge racist, republican uprising to take away rights & liberties but, wait- the weed lets pass. Seeing a guy in a huge swastika shirt buying pot from a liberal shop & happily using his new found freedom was an oxymoron that made me mad & sad. I see Trump guys everywhere but to see this in a liberal setting bugged me more then usual & then I saw this story. So I say smoke up but I will not light a Trump supporter’s joint or celebrate it right now, that’s all. At least we have progress somewhere & many of us need it right now. I totally agree with that.

I want to smoke pot with Willie and Loretta!!

    • Bonbon says:

Well it’s been almost 30 years since I did…..but sure, why not smoke with them both?

I was driving southern back roads yesterday and had a history of country music cd blaring. It had both Blue Eyes Cryin and COal Miners Daughter on it. Seriously good music !

Visited family in TN over Thanksgiving. On the drive back to the Nashville airport, saw the freeway billboard advertising Loretta Lynn’s Country Kitchen at Exit 143. Stopped there for lunch; it was everything I thought it would be and more!

Just wanted to mention that NORMAL mushrooms contain psilocybin. So it doesn’t make sense to do the ‘drug’ mushrooms just for the benefit. I don’t like how people lump ecstasy, pot and mushrooms in the same ‘safe’ category. As far as your brain is concerned, anything that has more hallucinogenic properties is more dangerous for your brain, especially when you are young. So promoting mushrooms as = to marijuana really bothers me because pot is much, much, much safer than mushrooms.

Loretta Lynn was married at age THIRTEEN, and she didn’t even know the facts of life, and was basically raped on her wedding night. She had 4 kids by age 18 or so! She didn’t have an education. Yet she’s maintained a successful career, had a long, devoted marriage, and wrote a beautiful, humorous autobiography. She is one of my heroes, and I’d LOVE it if she wrote a philosophy book!!

  7. Jennifer Jones says:

First, ““I know he smokes pot, but my goodness, there’s a lot people doing a lot worse then smoking pot!” it’s than, not then. This drives me nuts. Second, edibles.

  8. Alldamnday says:

I’m not surprised Willie’s stuff knocked her on her ass. I imagine it’d be hard for any mere mortal to handle stuff that he and say, Snoop smoke regularly. 🙂

  9. Tanakasan says:

Who would make an 84 year old smoke? There are pot edibles, tinctures, patches, etc…. You can reap the benefits of marijuana without the smoke!
