Nas is pulling a Sean Penn - he has requested from the judge overseeing his and Kelis’ divorce proceedings to deny his pregnant, now-estranged wife (of four years) Kelis any kind of financial support. That’s pretty cold. When Kelis filed for divorce at the end of April, there was a few questions as to just how far along she was in her pregnancy. Some outlets reported seven months along, some had her at eight months. TMZ is reporting that Kelis is “weeks from giving birth” and thus, unable to work to support herself financially. To make matter worse, the baby hasn’t even been born and Kelis and Nas are already fighting over custody:
Nas, one of the biggest and richest rappers around, does not want to pay his estranged, pregnant wife, Kelis, a penny in spousal support.
Kelis filed for divorce April 30. She’s weeks from giving birth and unable to work, but no matter to Nas — he’s filed his response to the divorce, asking the judge to deny her the spousal support she’s seeking. For bad measure, he also wants her to pay her own lawyer’s fees.
Nas and Kelis both want joint custody of their unborn child.
Kelis cites “irreconcilable differences” for the divorce, but we’re told she believes he was cheating on her and that’s what buzz-killed the marriage.

I just did some basic research on the whole Nas-Kelis-cheating angle, and it really seems like the gossip is a mixed bag. Last year, deejay/talk-radio hostess Wendy Williams claimed she had a tape of Kelis naked with some poser, and there seems to have been rumors about Nas’s zipper problems for the entirity of his four-year marriage. Did Kelis really leave Nas because of his cheating heart? If he cheated, does he owe her? Doesn’t he owe her at least some financial support considering she’s pregnant? Or are there bigger conspiracies at work?

Kaiser, if they “both” want “joint custody”, they can’t be fighting over custody. (I hate it when “both” is used in a sentence where it is totally superfluous… That’s bad English — and it’s not even my first language!)
I don’t see any mention in TMZ’s story that they are fighting for custody…
I’m thinking their quoted story should actually read “they both want SOLE custody”. (Yeah, I know you didn’t get it wrong — I would never say you did! Us Gerry fans must stick together!)
Still, he seems like a douche, wanting custody of the kid but not open to supporting the kid’s mother!

Is she successful in her own right? And if so, then he should only have to pay child support. I am betting there is a pre-nup given how successful he is. Unfortunately, this has nothing to do with the fact that she is pregnant.

He never said a word about child support, only spousal support. Since I dislike them both I have no qualms about it. I wouldn’t support her either, I would however do child support.

Kelis unable to work? Just two weeks ago she was performing in Russia! She tweeted about how much it sucked the whole time, but she didn’t care cuz she “got paid” (her own words)

Kelis released a statement a couple of weeks ago saying it doesn’t have anything to do with extra-marital affairs, they’re simply mean to one another so it has to end. Check your facts. Also, Nas isn’t contesting child support, it’s spousal support. Whether that’s right or wrong, Kelis does have her own paper, she’s had hit singles over the course of her career so it isn’t like she’s a pauper. That said, I do think he should help support her during the interim.

Are you kidding? That era never ended. Just ask my best friend who has never gotten one thin dime from her ex-husband. They split 15 years ago. Their daughter is now 17. Since he works construction off the books he flied under the radar and has never been caught.
But at least he calls once every 5 years or so, drunk in the middle of the night, demanding to talk to his “baby girl” (she doesn’t even remember him. She hasn’t seen him once time since he left…his choice. He left the state and never came back, never gave a forwarding address, and his faaaaaamily is protecting him by not telling where he is).
