Katherine Heigl and her newborn cover People: ‘I like boundaries & schedules’

heiglpeople
Katherine Heigl and her newborn son, Joshua Bishop, born December 20th, cover the new issue of People Magazine. It’s a curious choice for a cover story at a time when the world, or at least the country, seems like it’s going to hell. At least they didn’t try to normalize Trump yet again, as US is doing this week. We definitely need a distraction and babies fit the bill. (I’ll also take puppies, kittens and pets in general.) Plus Heigl is promoting her new show, Doubt, out February 15, and I would assume a deal was made for that. The cover photo is interesting to me in that they didn’t Photoshop her eye crinkles at all. So many of us have them it’s just that I’m not used to seeing them on the covers of magazines, where women tend to look like computer generated versions of themselves. This has the effect of making Heigl look tired, which is apt for a new mom. Little Joshua is a cutie but I swear he also looks gassy. I know that look. In the cover interview Heigl talks about her decision to try to get pregnant, and how it ended up being a surprise even though she was hoping for more kids. She’s been open about the fact that she chose to adopt her first two children, and now she’s being open about her pregnancy. She’s not my favorite person, but she does seem like a great mom. I also appreciate her animal advocacy work. Here’s some of her People interview:

Heigl, 38, and her husband, musician Josh Kelley, 37, welcomed the 7 lbs. 15 oz. Joshua Jr. on Dec. 20.

“It was a surprise! I knew I wanted to expand our family, I knew I wanted to have more children,” she tells PEOPLE at her Utah ranch for this week’s cover story. “I just didn’t know how we were going to go about that.”

The actress calls herself “one of those people who really thinks, I have to schedule, I have to plan this out,” so finding out she was expecting just as she was back at work on her new CBS series, Doubt (premiering Feb. 15) wasn’t ideal.

“I’ll be totally honest, my first reaction was ‘Oh s—,’ ” she says. “But now we have a new normal, and I have to give myself a break in order to get used to it.”

Heigl didn’t always see pregnancy as part of her path to motherhood. For years, carrying a child herself “didn’t ever really speak to me. I got really invested in adoption. I didn’t look back or even think about it,” she says. “Only when I was about 35 did I start going, ‘Well, should we consider getting pregnant?’ You don’t want the choice to be taken away from you.”

“I like boundaries and schedules, especially with our lifestyle when we’re kind of bouncing around a lot. Our environment changes so often I feel like the more order I can keep in their day, the more structure to their day, the happier they are, the more sort of at ease everyone is because they know what to expect. For me it’s really just about trusting my own gut and my own instincts and what works for me and my family and not really listening to all the noise. “

[From People online and video]

People also has an interview with Heigl on their site (I included her quotes from that above which is why they don’t flow with the story). In the video you can see her two daughters, Naleigh, eight, and Adalaide, four, playing as she holds the baby. She also has her 15 year-old niece, Madison, living with her as Madison loves horses and Heigl has a ranch at her home in Utah. In the video she talks about keeping order and a schedule for her kids and she sounds very type A. In some ways I can relate to that as I like to have my day planned out, but Heigl’s way sounds a bit extreme. Given all I’ve heard about her she comes across as quite the taskmaster. Congratulations to Katherine, Josh and their daughters on their new arrival!

Happy New Years Eve from the Kelley girls! Here's to a spectacular, joyful abundant 2017 for all! 🎉👏😘

Katherine instagrammed this video of her daughter sitting at the piano as her husband, Josh, sings and plays. It really touched me for some reason.

Left Hollywood? Hollywood left her! There are only so many times you can bite the hand that feeds you…..

  2. Jayna says:

    Pretty photos.

  3. QueenEllisabet says:

She learned to ‘lighten up’ because she’s wasn’t that good of an actress to be such a self absorbed raging bitch. Baby is cute…she is still eh

  4. Cool Character says:

    Love Katherine. Cute family

I like her. She’s a regular schmegular gal that talks crap and speaks her mind whether people agree or not. I’d rather have that than so many of these fakeA actresses who say one thing to “the people” then return to a life of crack, puppy kicking and throwing up. Ya that was extreme, but you get my point.

I also agree that greys anatomy was ridiculous when she stepped down from her nom. I was embarrassed for the actors during that time of really bad writing. Glad they changed it around after, even though they get the occasional bump in the road.

She has amazing bone structure, and a big smile, and it seems like society thinks she has to be sweet as candy. She really just fits in with all the gals on this site in how we speak…

Yeah I’ve come around on her. And she’s paid her dues for speaking out. Good for her. Nice family.

You know what? I totally agree with you. I’m not her biggest fan (I actually don’t think about her at all) but after everything that’s happened recently I’m just freaking tired of the double standards!
Either you blacklist everyone forever or you treat everyone the same.
        Case in point?
Mel effing Gibson is nominated for an Oscar!
        Casey Affleck is.
Woody Allen still gets young actors salivating at the idea of adding a Woody Allen movie to their resumé.
What do they all have in common??? I won’t use the word!
Was she an entitled brat? By all accounts, she was.
But let’s all acknowledge that, once again, had she been a man, she would have bounced back by now!

I’ve always liked her and thought she was a decent actress, she comes across as open and honest in her interviews, I especially remember one about her not bonding with their first daughter as quickly as her husband, that was a risk to reveal but I admired it. I think she gets too much crap for speaking her mind, men rarely get that kind of backlash and black listing for any type of “bad” behavior. She cares deeply about animals and adopted two beautiful babies who needed some special care if I remember correctly, that speaks to her character more than anything in my opinion, she’s a strong woman and I hate that she has to apologize for that.

I never watched Grey’s Anatomy but I was looking for something to binge on after Trump’s election. So I started watching that on Netflix and it was a great choice because there are so many episodes lol! Anyway, I liked her Grey’s character and I’ve come around a little on her. She has a sweet family now and I wish her the best.

  8. Rose says:

I can’t help but really like her for some reason.

  9. BreeInSEA says:

I always liked her openness about anything. I liked her even in 27 dresses. She’s charming in an annoying sort of way hah. At least she puts her foot where her mouth is in terms of volunteer work. I wonder how many pink hats have volunteered outside of marching since last week?

  10. LadyT says:

That little cutie sure has some blue eyes.

  11. Mimz, says:

I’m a die-hard Grey’s anatomy fan, but, did you guys see her in ROSWELL?
That show was the TEEN dream!!! I love it, omg. (i just sounded like a teen now)
Anyway she was Isobel Evans there and was really good there too. So I always had a soft spot for her. Got mad at her when she left Greys, then I enjoyed most of her cheesy movies (i think she is really great at Romcoms), and I was sad to hear she and her mom were a nightmare to deal with at work.
So I think she ate a big slice of humble pie and turned it around now. We all love a redemption story and she’s likeable and a decent actress. She’ll be alright.
I’m happy for her and her family.

Anyway… HELLO CB I have been quiet/silent but I am here reading EVERYDAY 🙂

I think she royally messed up her career in her 20s and she knows it – she’s been trying for years to come back from that. Maybe it is a double standard. If you look at Russell Crowe, Casey Affleck, Charlie Sheen, Alec Baldwin, etc., their careers haven’t really suffered at all.
