Emma Watson no longer poses for fan photos: ‘I just can’t give that tracking data’

Premiere of Columbia Pictures' 'Passengers' - Arrivals

Emma Watson covers the April issue of Vanity Fair. It’s a lovely cover and interesting editorial, all to promote Emma’s Disney princess turn in Beauty and the Beast. I’ll admit it – I’ve never had strong feelings one way or the other about Emma. But over the past few years, I’ve found myself defending her more and more, and I came away from this interview with a newfound respect for her. She actually seems to practice what she preaches, and she’s not naively claiming to be “private” and then dishing details about her love life. She seems very conscientious and serious and there’s nothing wrong with that. You can read the full VF piece here. Some highlights:

Reading is “sacred” to Emma: “Books gave me a way to connect with my father. Some of my most precious and treasured moments . . .” She trails off and, unexpectedly for someone who is known for her composure, tears up. Her parents divorced when she was young. “I just remember him reading to me before bed and how he used to do all the different voices. I grew up on film sets, and books were my connection to the outside world. They were my connection to my friends back at school because if I was reading what they were reading we’d have something in common. Later in life, they became an escape, a means of empowerment, a friend I could rely on.”

She got tired of the Harry Potter life: “I’d walk down the red carpet and go into the bathroom. I had on so much makeup and these big, fluffy, full-on dresses. I’d put my hands on the sink and look at myself in the mirror and say, ‘Who is this?’ I didn’t connect with the person who was looking back at me, and that was a very unsettling feeling.”

She seriously considered giving up acting when she enrolled at Brown: “I was finding this fame thing was getting to a point of no return. I sensed if this was something I was ever going to step away from it was now or never.”

Why she kept acting: “I’ve been doing this since I was 10 or 11, and I’ve often thought, I’m so wrong for this job because I’m too serious; I’m a pain in the ass; I’m difficult; I don’t fit. But as I’ve got older, I’ve realized, No! Taking on those battles, the smaller ones and the bigger ones, is who I am.”

She no longer takes photos with fans: “For me, it’s the difference between being able to have a life and not. If someone takes a photograph of me and posts it, within two seconds they’ve created a marker of exactly where I am within 10 meters. They can see what I’m wearing and who I’m with. I just can’t give that tracking data… I’ll say, ‘I will sit here and answer every single Harry Potter fandom question you have but I just can’t do a picture’ ”—and much of the time people don’t bother. “I have to carefully pick and choose my moment to interact. When am I a celebrity sighting versus when am I going to make someone’s freakin’ week? Children I don’t say no to, for example.”

Dealing with the stalkers & creeps that come with Potterdom: “People will say to me, ‘Have you spoken to Jodie Foster or Natalie Portman? They would have great advice for you on how to grow up in the limelight.’ I’m not saying it was in any way easy on them, but with social media it’s a whole new world. They’ve both said technology has changed the game… Privacy for me is not an abstract idea.”

She won’t talk about her boyfriend: “I want to be consistent: I can’t talk about my boyfriend in an interview and then expect people not to take paparazzi pictures of me walking around outside my home. You can’t have it both ways…. I’ve noticed, in Hollywood, who you’re dating gets tied up into your film promotion and becomes part of the performance and the circus. I would hate anyone that I were with to feel like they were in any way part of a show or an act.”

She allegedly turned down the lead in La La Land: “There have been hard moments in my career when I’ve had an agent or a movie producer say, ‘You are making a big mistake.’ But what’s the point of achieving great success if you feel like you’re losing your freakin’ mind? I’ve had to say, ‘Guys, I need to go back to school,’ or ‘I just need to go home and hang out with my cats.’ People have looked at me and been like, ‘Is she insane?’ But, actually, it’s the opposite of insane.”

[From Vanity Fair]

There’s also a discussion about feminism as related to her work with the UN’s HeForShe program, her newfound friendships with bell hooks and Gloria Steinem, plus how she wanted a more feminist interpretation of the Beauty and the Beast story. As for the La La Land story, she doesn’t specifically confirm or deny the gossip that the role was originally intended for her and she turned it down. But man, if that’s true and she did turn it down… yeah, I kind of think she did make a mistake with that one.

No opinion on Emma, but looking at the stories featured on the cover, I can hardly wait to get my copy of VF. I love the constant trolling Graydon does to trump and company.

This doesn’t make sense. The person can still take a pic of her without her permission and post it on-line. How is she going to stop that from happening? If she’s out at a coffee shop, someone can easily take a pic from across the room and post it with full details of where she is.

    • OhDear says:

I think she means in cases when she’s asked – she can’t control if someone takes a photo of her without her permission, but she does what she can in situations where she has control.

      • LA says:

Agreed- there’s only so much she can do but that doesnt mean she shouldnt try.

      • jetlagged says:

You can only control so much, but I get it – I remember reading that Rihanna’s makeup artist posted an Instagram photo of just her makeup table at the start of a press tour – the paparazzi were able to figure out which hotel she was at by the wallpaper and the carpet visible in the corner of the photo…and were waiting outside the hotel to get their shots.

I think most people, if asked, would agree to not post their photo right away or not give away too many details. I’m all for celebs setting whatever boundaries make them comfortable. For some, it’s no photos at all, others are fine with photos if they aren’t close to home or somewhere they frequent.

      • me says:

My point is, she sadly really has no control over it.

    • V4Real says:

I agree @ me For a smart cookie she sounds dumb. A fan can still take a pic without them being in it and post it. Ok so take a pic with my child then, I will crop my child out and still post it.

And sometimes a fan just want a pic with that celeb for a keepsake of meeting them or maybe just as proof they actually met them. Emma get over yourself.

      • INeedANap says:

She cannot control everyone but she can control her own reactions. The illusion may be enough. And I don’t think she needs to get over herself — in general, I think everyone needs to be smarter and more circumspect about posting their lives on social media.

I am a nobody and even I never check in anywhere online while I am actually at the place. I’ve been stalked before and I know better.

      • Another Anne says:

Unfortunately, some fans ruin things for everyone else. Many rush to post the picture on social media, even when asked not to by the celebrity. So then the celebs start to say no.

Many of these celebs with rabid fanbases have problems with stalkers. These pictures make that problem worse, and that seems to be what Emma is referring to, with the “tracking” comment. Especially for a young woman like Emma, these stalkers are a danger. She is smart to protect herself.

      • Nicole says:

Or she should be allowed to have agency over herself like any other human being. She’s allowed to say no and we are NOT entitled to her at all. People seem to think that just because you’re a fan you can demand things from celebs. She doesn’t want to take a picture than as a fan I respect that. She’s allowed to control that aspect of her life. I never geotag my location for safety reasons either
You should get over yourself frankly.

    • QueenB says:

I guess its also for legal reasons. She obviously cant control if someone snaps her without her consent (most of the time she wouldnt even know) but if a judge sees that she tries hard to be private than she will profit from that if she sues a gossip paper for example.

  4. Pixelated says:

I find her underwhelming as an actress but she seems like a genuine, nice, intelligent and refreshing person in the age where Kardashians reign.

  5. Ayra. says:

I quite like the second picture, she’s a gorgeous woman. But the first picture just reminds me of that atrocious doll that they made for Belle, that ended up looking like Justin Bieber in a yellow dress.

    • Pimms says:

That’s what I thought as well; Justin Bieber with a touch of John Malkovich…god that doll is awful. She is a beautiful young woman inside and out.

  6. OhDear says:

Re: photos – I have mixed thoughts about this. On one hand, of course, it’s sensible, especially since some of her fans are creepy as hell. Also, people should respect her off time.

On the other hand, she made bank in the HP movies so that she can do whatever she wants, and yet she chose a high-profile profession where she seems to be more interested in the celebrity aspect and less so in the work. Plus she used “privacy” as her excuse when it was revealed that she was listed in the Panama Papers, so I find this rather suspect to some degree.

Also, didn’t JLaw get shredded when she said the same thing?

On another note, I get that there’s a disconnect between her image as an activist for feminism vs. her job to promote BatB, but the part in the interview where she talks about getting Gloria Steinem to approve BatB was…interesting.

    • Nicole says:

JLaw did get shredded and people were wrong for that as well. Same rule applies these days we are more connected than ever. If a celeb wants to hide certain aspects of their life then who am I to judge. People need to stop treating them as commodities

  7. Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Not a fan of her acting but she does seem like a nice sweet person who wants to make a difference. Unlike a certain Duchess she works hard for her causes and is genuinely passionate about them.

Re: her comments about acting. It the only thing she really knows how to do plus given the success of HP she can’t really have any other career.

    • Trixie says:

Good lord, does Kate Middleton need to be dragged into everything? This post is about Emma, why are you mentioning Kate?

  8. Carol says:

I’ve always liked Emma. I have no problems with her denying selfies and don’t understand how she is getting bashed for saying no just because people could still take a picture of her without her permission. She is taking control where she can. Good for her.

  9. QQ says:

These pics are egregiously bad, Im sorry but im dumbfounded as to what the f*ck is this drab sad light/styling everything about this comes off overly precious and Floppy

    • shelley* says:

I think the pics are meant to be arty but they look like shite imo…I find her boring and she’s been stealing a living since she was 11, she couldn’t act her way out of a wet paper bag.

She seems into her charity work so kudos to her for that, I just wish she would make a career out of it and step away from the camera.

  10. Joni says:

She’s had issues with stalkers in the past, so you can’t blame her for being paranoid.
& no shade, but she can’t pull off short hair.

  11. Kasia says:

After what happened to that girl from The Voice this summer I really wouldn’t blame any celebrity for keeping fans at a safe distance.

    • Char says:

I was thinking the same thing. Completely agree.

    • Snowflake says:

Yeah, exactly. Someone can take a picture, post it, and within minutes, she could be surrounded by fans. Nothing wrong with being on the cautious side. Of course, someone could sneak a picture but you can try and control it the best you can. I try to avoid taking pictures, you never know where people are going to post it.

  12. Dolkite says:

Why would she have such an issue if a complete stranger like me came up and said, “Will you take a picture with me? And will you let me hold you close so it looks like you’re my girlfriend? And do you mind if I post it online while saying you’re my girlfriend? Or that the picture was all your idea and I just did it to make you happy?”

  13. Amy says:

I think she seems like a nice and sensible person but i just find her to be so…analytical about everything. I’m not sure if that’s the best word to describe it but she never seems natural to me. And that comes across in her acting too, it’s so clinical, so overthought, it never connects for me.

    • ell says:

i know what you mean about her acting, and yeah she seems lovely as a person, just not that good an actor. i feel the same towards keira knightley.

    • Adrien says:

She was great in Bling Ring and Regression, the horror film she did with Ethan Hawke. Check them out. I think she was also ok in Wallflower. She has mannerisms though.

  14. QueenB says:

“But man, if that’s true and she did turn it down… yeah, I kind of think she did make a mistake with that one.”

I dont. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are a way better duo than Emma Watson and Miles Teller. It would have never gotten Oscar nominations with them. I hope Emma knows that, she can be that full of herself to seriously think she would have the sameoutcome Emma Stone had. Beauty and the Beast will make money, insane amounts of money. That will keep her in the game for some time. I also think it helps her. She isnt only the Harry Potter character anymore but also Belle.

  15. ell says:

i believe she might be a fellow introvert, going by what she says. and i like that she puts her money where her mouth is; she wants to be low key, so she won’t dish out everything about her private life. i find british actresses to be far better at this game than their male british counterparts (and yes, it’s a dig at the internet boyfriends).

and i get the fan photos thing. being gracious and polite to your fans and stopping for a quick chat is one thing, being photographed so everyone knows where you are and who you’re with, especially for a woman, is another.

    • HookedonCoffee says:

Jetlagged—Good grief. Some people really need to get professional help. Passions are good and all, but healthy people would probably realize that they need another hobby when they are data tracking and ticking off interior de or just to hound someone to misery.

  16. edith says:

I dont think la la land would have been so successful with her in the lead tbh….emma stone is the new jennifer lawrence and everybodys gal….emma watson is not cool enough, I think

I like her a lot but this romantic pictures are killing me, they look ridiculous

  17. minx says:

When I saw the headline I rolled my eyes, but I have to say she makes a lot of sense about the picture taking. She seems like a sensible young woman.

  18. Adrien says:

It is her right to turn them down. Not everyone can be like Hugh Jackman who can handle overzealous fans. Fans nowadays are getting creepier and more entitled. The worst types are HP and Twilight fans. I understand why Kristen Stewart acts that way. I feel bad for the HP kids. They will always have a new generation of looney fans. Trekkies, Comic book and Star Wars fans at least knew their limitations (except for Diego Luna’s fans who freely stroked his hair and face in one ambush autograph sesh. Maybe they were old Havana Nights fans pretending to be SW fans).

I’ve been a stan all my life but I am perfectly happy with just a group pic with fellow fans. I would never dare touch a celeb.

  19. serena says:

I love Emma but that cover is hideous. Also, I don’t think she made a mistake refusing La La Land.. I mean, it would have been really different with her as Mia, as opposed to Emma Stone.

  20. Erica_V says:

I don’t think turning down Disney money for La La Land was a bad idea. There is no guarantee she would’ve won Emma’s Oscar for her portrayal of the role.

I need to roll my eyes up into my head though on the second quote. Seriously – what is it these actresses find so wrong about jetting around the world, getting all glammed up, getting to wear beautiful designer closes and getting PAID for it?!? Why this existential crisis of who am I? You’re yourself just in a pretty dress and make up on a carpet.

Next time I’ll work the red carpet for her and she can come to my job and work on spreadsheets. Not glamorous at all no worries!

    • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Emma W had apparently already started rehearsals when she pulled out when Disney came calling. I don’t think it would have done as well as it has with her in the lead – Emma Stone is the better actress and judging from what I’ve seen of B&tB Emma W is not very good in what is an iconic character/movie.

    • HookedOnCoffee says:

Erica V–I also find that fairly obnosxuous and self-indulgent. I’m sure the charm of hitting the red carpets wears off fast, and it all becomes ‘just a job.’ It is navel-gazing, however, to whine to this degree that this is their job. People do things ‘just as a job’ all over the world, in vastly more degrading and exploitative situations for infinitely less money. These people probably don’t mean to come off as unselfaware, but they seriously are.

  21. Rae says:

I want to like her, I understand where she’s coming from, but I just find her and this interview…really try hard and overly precious.

It just comes off to me as if she’s trying too hard to be different. It grates. She’s right, she is overly serious and, to be a bit harsh, a bit of a bore!

However, if she manages to pull off B&B then she’ll definitely get some major props from me. It’s my favourite Disney story. No pressure!

  22. lucy2 says:

If she wants to refuse photos, for any reason, that’s her right. If she’s doing it for her own security, even more so.

  23. Brandi says:

1000% uninterested in her or this film. FR I am slightly annoyed they are doing this remake. Beauty and the Beast was one of my fave Disney movies when I was little and this re make just doesnt look good 😒

  24. Miss V says:

Wow, they will put anyone on the cover of Vanity Fair.

  25. Madailein says:

This woman bores me into a near coma. She is not talented, original, interesting, beautiful, charming, or charismatic: why is she still a “Thing”? Perhaps she’s nice enough and smart, but she should have disappeared from public view long ago. She’s not a remotely good actress, just an average looking girl who was absurdly lucky as a child to have been cast in an immensely popular movie series, and who has been famous due to that ever since. She has done NOTHING to deserve any recent interest or praise, so I don’t get why Hollywood still bothers to invest in her “talent” and promotion in articles and interviews like these.

    • G says:

Harsh but true. She’s not The Absolute Worst, but she would probably be more interesting if she was. Funnily enough I find her so obscenely overrated that I probably comment the most on her articles.

La La Land itself was overrated and what saved it was Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. I don’t like pitting one woman against another but since this IS essentially a question of which Emma was the better fit — Stone has a million times more warmth, vibrancy, and natural charisma than Watson.

Also Watson looks like the ghost of a little Edwardian boy on that cover. I find her very androgynous, even with long hair. But again, not in an interesting way.

  26. Megan says:

I don’t rate her acting talent, but she is beautiful. Although this is true for a lot of Hollywood women.

  27. Patty says:

She looks like Brooklyn Beckham on that cover. I just find her so blah as an actress.
