The first ‘Justice League’ trailer dropped: cheeseball, awesome or just bland?

justice1

Let me be clear about one thing: I’m actually looking forward to Wonder Woman. I think WW looks really good and I’m really rooting for Gal Gadot to kick ass in her solo WW movie, and I hope the film is a huge financial and critical success. If this was a story about Wonder Woman and Gal Gadot, I would be all for it. But it’s not. The whole reason they introduced WW in Batfleck vs WhatsHisGuts: 2 Sad 2 Batfleck was because they wanted to do a Justice League movie. The stand-alone WW movie was an afterthought in their master plan of going head-to-head with the Avengers for all of that sweet comic-book ensemble money. So, the first Justice League movie IS the master plan of Warner Bros. And this trailer is our first real look at the film:

I get that this is supposed to be a short-handed introduction to these characters but… my God, where’s the plot? It’s just, like, let’s get some superheros together and bam, we should make a billion dollars. Gadot is WW, Ben Affleck returns as The Batfleck, Ray Fisher is Victor Stone/Cyborg, Jason Momoa is Aquaman and Ezra Miller is The Flash. Henry Cavill isn’t in this trailer but Superman obviously shows up at some point. Amber Heard will show up at Meera, Amy Adams reprises her role as Lois Lane and there are more interesting names involved too (like Willem Defoe!).

So… are you into this? I’m not feeling the tone quite yet, although I’m open to the possibility that this is just a bad trailer. Aquaman seems cheesy. The special effects are struggling. WW looks awesome, but I’ll be so mad if she has to carry this nonsense. And The Batfleck’s special Batfleck voice? Um, no. It’s like Ben’s impression of Christian Bale’s Batman voice.

Incidentally, I do think they are getting it right with Wonder Woman. The latest trailer (released a week ago) looked really great.

Jason Sexy Momoa is the only reason for me to watch it.

    • KBeth says:

My Momoa crush is the only reason I will see this movie. Yum.

    • Akku says:

I used to like him, but as pretty as he is, he just has a pretty awful personality and has said some pretty cr*ppy things (re: rape, his “gypsy” instagram stuff, etc.). With him it’s really a case of enjoying the eye candy and switching off all kinds of thinking. :/ People will defend him, because he’s cute, but if he looked like Lena Dunham or any other supposedly not so cute or “basic” person, people wouldn’t let his repeated idiocies go unremarked.

  2. lisa says:

affleck looks so puffy in the face, like it’s the first day of his period

  3. MunichGirl says:

    R.I.P. Aquaman jokes

    • ichsi says:

Get ready for the Aquaman self-insertion fanfics instead. xDDD

I hate hate HATE Zack Snyder and whoever decided it was a good idea to give him this franchise. But I’ll maybe give this a try, even if it’s only for the male and female eye candy.

    • LOL says:

Totally agree, Aquaman will be great and so badass, too cool to handle. Also the other characters around Aquaman look so on point like Mera and Vulko, the effects about Atlantis looks promising too.

  4. jerkface says:

Oh look here is Batdad and another superhero movie. Yawn.
You’re right it looks like bad cheese and I’m really over the whole superhero barf fest hollywood keeps serving up.

    • LadyT says:

Agreed. I’m beyond the Superhero saturation point. Move on Hollywood.

    • Cali says:

But audiences are clearly NOT tired and continue to see these movies. And Christian Bale was a Batdad also. People act as if they have no idea how to avoid watching these films. What is tiring is the petty hate on Affleck, Cavill, Snyder and superhero movies in general.

      • Ange says:

You’re allowed to like it just as we’re allowed to be O.V.E.R it. I can smell the cynicism and grasping at my wallet from here, it’s not petty to feel like you’re being fed a crappy movie just for $$$.

      • jerkface says:

I dont recall Bale wearing dad jeans and sporting bloat on pap walks with his kids 24/7. I’ve successfully avoided the genre considering I don’t know who tf Snyder is. If you’re so concerned with Batdad and that wimpy boy Cavill’s superhero feelings then you can set up a Go Fund Me account to pay for whatever therapy they may need after I’ve hurt their poor wittle feewings because I don’t care to watch their bad acting while wearing laughably fake muscle plates and tights.

Gosh, its like you don’t know how to successfully avoid reading bad comments about celebrities you stan for. lol

  5. Maya says:

Girl power – don’t care if Wonder Woman looks good or bad, I will always support women orientated movies especially female superheroes.

And the icing on the cake is the delicious Chris Pine as the male lead…

    • cr says:

I’ve become a Pine fan after seeing Hell Or High Water. So Pine, Gadot, Wright and Nielsen? Yeah, I’m in.
As for the JL trailer, the ComicCon looked better and was more ‘fun’.

    • Cherise says:

That casting still leaves me conflicted. Its like God forbid a woman should have some muscle on her. Oh no, even in an action role the woman must must have the skinny proportions of a Victoria Secret model. As a woman who got to college on a partial athletics scholarship that crap pisses me off. This is why young girls wont pursue sports, they dont think of their bodies as functional but as asthetic pleasures for boys eyes. Aaaarrgh! BUT if I boycott this film the execs wont see it as their casting failure or a mistake to not urge the actress to bulk up, they’ll see it as a female action hero failure. So I guess I’ll have to go. I’m less than pleased by this shit.

      • cr says:

“the execs wont see it as their casting failure or a mistake to not urge the actress to bulk up,”
I’m not an athlete, never will be, but while Gadot doesn’t looked ripped, she doesn’t look like she’d blow over in a light breeze either. And apparently she did add muscle for this role.
There was an interesting thread on another site from about two weeks ago, when this trailer came out, about this: how bulky and ripped is Diana supposed to be, considering her strength is due in part to her being a demigodess.

      • Nyawira says:

@CR But Thor is the God of Thunder and he has muscles. Supermans strength is supposedly from a difference between Kryptons sun and ours and yet he has muscles. Flash is a boy who’s power is that he moves fast and yet look at the pic above. Flash is bigger than her. She looks like one of Leo’s yacht girlfriends not a kickass dame.

      • cr says:

“But Thor is the God of Thunder and he has muscles. ” Thor is also male and a different comic universe.
“Flash is bigger than her” Considering that Ezra Miller is 5’11 and Gadot is 5’10 it’s not surprising that he’s bigger than she is. Even in that photo she doesn’t look like a wimp.
She has gone through ripped and non-ripped versions in the comics as well. You may think she doesn’t look kickass, but I don’t see that. I’m also more focused on whether or not they make sure she’s not a damsel in distress, not just how not-ripped enough she is for some people.

      • Mannori says:

For me is not really about more muscle or less muscle but about the vibe, the ability to get into a character and project the strength the character requires. I agree with you that Gadot is terribly miscasted not only for her lack of athletic preparation, I agree she shouldn’t look like a VS model, but mainly she’s just unable to sell the character. She doesn’t have “It”, that quality that makes even mediocre actors compelling, less alone the acting ability. Just look at Robin Wright’s character: just in her few scenes on the trailer she completely upstages and overshadows Gadot, and not to mention Wright’s body, even if is she’s still lean and model-like, she’s (unbelievable for her age) fit and strong and muscular: her Antiope really looks like and Amazon, someone you’d think twice before messing up with.

    • CdnMagician says:

Disagree respectfully. I want a good movie, especially since I have to pay 30 bucks to see it. DC has a horrible track record and industry rumblings say WW is a mess. Will be waiting for reviews on this one.

I’ll be the first in line for Captain Marvel though.

    • dj says:

@Maya. Totally girl power! I may see it a few times to support a female powered movie. I hope it does not suck. I am thrilled it has Chris Pine in it. I have grown to like him in Star Trek movies. Loved him in Hell or High Water.

Batfleck is a terrible choice and Batman is in general, tired. I am interested in Aquaman backstory and the Flash. The others not so much.

  6. Mia4s says:

Well….uhhh….I’m still looking forward to the Wonder Woman movie.

  7. Dorothy#1 says:

    I’ll see it in theatres!

  8. SusanneToo says:

    WW-yes. JL-no thanks.

  9. DesertReal says:

Just like I keep telling Mr. DR – Affleck stands out in a bad way, and should retire his front of the camera career. Everyone else I’m extremely excited about – albeit somewhat skeptical of the Flash casting (I love the guy from the always excellent TV series) at least we all know the guy can act from We Need to Talk About Kevin & Perks of Being a Wallflower.

  10. Sunsetsnow81 says:

If JL is as boring as that trailer…they will not be getting my $11. Wonder Woman looks really good and can’t wait to see it.

  11. Joni says:

Looks like a horrible CG mess. What does Zack Snyder have against using real locations?? I don’t get it.

  12. Nicole says:

WW looks good. This looks exactly like how Suicide Squad looked. A messy trailer with a lot of “ooohh there’s so and so” but no plot points at all. Not even a hint. And we all know how that movie turned out.
Eh I have WW which might be the only D.C. Movie I ever see in theaters. As of now I’m still a Marvel girl and we have Guardians, Spider-Man and Thor this year. Black Panther and Avengers next year. So I’m good

    • Mal says:

It might just be me, but I think WW looks to be in the same vein as BvS and everything else DC/WB has put out. The lack of color, all fights at night, the bad jokes, the slo-mo overstylization….all of that tells me that’s there to cover up how bad and empty the DC films are.

And as history serves, DC also has a track record of putting out really nice trailers, but then the output is always less than creative as superhero movies go nowadays. So…meh.

  13. bellebottomblues says:

I actually think it looks promising….
Jason surfing on the Batmobile thing love it lol

  14. Lisa says:

    Looks noisy dark loud

  15. Iris West-Allen says:

The trailer looks dark and depressing.

  16. Danielle says:

Wow, that justice League trailer was boring! Considering they often put all the best parts of the movie in the trailer, that REALLY doesn’t bode well.

  17. Sam says:

I guess the sun just doesn’t shine in DC land.

Sorry but this looks like another CGI filled mess.

  18. Zuzus Girl says:

No to all of them including WW.

  19. Insomniac says:

There was a Justice League trailer from Comic Con last year that was 100% more entertaining than this one and made the movie look pretty fun. I’ll probably go see it based on that trailer, not this one.

  20. teacakes says:

So DC still hasn’t learned its lesson from BvS

And they’ll still get fanboy/fangirl $$$$$ just for having these big-name superheroes in the same movie, so they will continue to refuse to learn.

  21. manda says:

I have reservations, of course I do! Their other movies have been so disappointing. But I thought this looked better on first trailer than Suicide Squad, which I thought looked so bad that I actually thought the movie WASN’T as bad as I had thought it was. These are the same movie/production companies, right?

  22. Cool says:

I liked a lot, Aquaman was amazing in my opinion and gives a whole new perspective about the character. Mera / Amber heard looks fantastic, and I liked the underwater effect and visual. I think on her scene the guards are protecting a box ?!
I would love to see Wonder Woman and mera interact like they did in the comic books.
Not into the cyborg , flash looks cool.
I will watch WW and JL for sure.

    • meme says:

      mother box?

      • Cool says:

I don’t know if is the exactly translation, but in the DC universe there was 3 mother boxes ( one for Atlantis, one for WW universe and one for humans) there is a lot of power on those boxes and if it shows on Mera scene maybe it will be important for the plot.

  23. hey-ya says:

    …(sigh)…november….so much waiting….

  24. Ayra. says:

I’m actually kind of sad about this. I LOVE Justice League, and I’m also really rooting for Jason, Gal and Ezra but lord…why?
I felt that this could have been so good, like the idea itself of making this movie could have been brilliant. But the trailer was so freaking lackluster, it isn’t supposed to be boring already! (+1 for graphics though)
    I’m mad.

  25. jinni says:

This looks like boring crap. There a lot going on but it just looks like a mess instead of piquing my interest. I see a crap ton of very obvious CGI. I feel like just like Suicide Squad there will be a lot of back story lumped together quickly just to give people an idea of why these people are being put together but we will not get the time to actually care about them. And the trailer song is making me think that just like SS this movie will be heavily leaning on the music in the movie to bring excitement in this movie instead of the actual story itself. Which means I won’t likely care whether or not they defeat this enemy or not. I guess the effects and the characters “badass” personality is supposed to make for the fact the there isn’t any character development, the plot is weak and I’ll put money that even the villain will all be weak as hell.

Oh well I wasn’t planning on spending any more money on DC films and this trailer only confirms for me that that is still a good stance to have.

  26. meme says:

I’m looking forward more to WW and Aquaman solo movies than “Justice League”. I have no faith in Zack anymore, but WW looks good and the Aquaman movie with James Wan directing seems like a good combination (with Jason and Amber)

  27. smh says:

Boring? Did I see the same trailer? Lol seems like typical fun teaser for superhero movie. It’s 8 months away I’m sure they will hit more on the premise maybe in 2nd trailer or comic con.

I thought Aquaman stood out. I bet is gonna steal the whole movie

  28. Josefina says:

IIRC, WW is produced and partially written by Snyder. So it’s going to be awful. Nothing that man touches – NOTHING – turns out decent. Nothing.

    • DahliaDee says:

Except for “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole”. That one’s like the exception that prooves the rule.

  29. Jellybean says:

I am not a comic book fan at all. To varying degrees I have enjoyed all the Marvel films and I will continue to see them in the theatre, but at this point any DC movie will have to have really good reviews for me to pay out any money; I have fallen asleep during the last three.

  30. original kay says:

Iron Fist is terrible. Terrible writing, miscast, terrible editing.

It’s definitely the worst of the Marvel Defenders grouping.

I don’t like DC comics so I probably won’t watch any of these movies.

    • Mal says:

Iron Fist wasn’t that bad! It’s definitely not the best of the bunch, I agree, but I think it did have some strong moments, especially the Danny/Colleen dynamic was pretty awesome. And Ward Meachum was an awesome turncoat at the end who made no excuses that he was helping Danny for selfish reasons.

All in all, I hope they get a different showrunner for Season 2 (if there’s going to be one), but S1 was a B- for me overall.

  31. D says:

TRASH. Ben Affleck has to be the worst working actor today. His delivery of “I’m rich” is cringeworthy — no energy whatsoever. In his defense, it looks like he can’t move his face anymore so emoting might be out of the question.

  32. Mal says:

It looks like Snyder doubled down on BvS for this movie and changed the colors from brown to dark blue…that’s it. Everything looks to be CGI with nothing even remotely recognizable other than the characters themselves. This is gonna be a shitshow.
