Rupert Sanders’ affair with Kristen Stewart was just a ‘momentary lapse’

***FILE PHOTOS*** Kristen And Rupert Caught Cheating Together

I don’t think many people realized that Rupert Sanders is the director of Ghost in the Shell, the whitewashed abomination that just sh-t the bed at the box office. This is Sanders’ first directorial effort since Snow White and the Huntsman in 2012. Remember that? Shortly after the film’s release, Rupert’s affair with SWATH leading lady Kristen Stewart became public. Us Weekly had taken exclusive photos of Rupert and Kristen riding around LA in her mom’s Mini Cooper. There were photos of them kissing, cuddling and looking very affair-y. I think they were even doing sh-t in the back of the Mini Cooper. The rest was history: Kristen basically destroyed her relationship with Robert Pattinson. Rupert’s marriage to Liberty Ross ended almost six months to the day of the release of the photos. It was one of the biggest scandals of 2012, and it was easily one of the biggest gossip stories I’ve ever covered. But did you know it was only a “momentarily lapse”? So says Rupert in a new interview.

Rupert Sanders, the director who was infamously snapped canoodling with Kristen Stewart while they were both in relationships with other people, says his affair with the young starlet was a “momentary lapse.” Sanders was married to Liberty Ross when the photos surfaced about five years ago. Stewart was in a relationship with her “Twilight” costar Robert Pattinson.

“If you took people off the table for a momentary lapse, there would be no one making art,” he told U.K.’s Metro, explaining that the headline-making affair didn’t ruin his career.

Sanders called the incident with Stewart a mistake.

“You never know what’s coming in life. Around every corner there’s something unexpected, and that’s life. You just have to brush yourself off and continue moving forward the best you can. Everyone makes mistakes. I am bound to make more mistakes, and I wouldn’t expect my life to be exciting if I didn’t.”

[From Fox News]

All this did was remind me of the fact that Kristen and Rupert never really talked about how long the affair had been happening. They both took the cheaters’ line of defense, which is that they only cheated the one time they were caught. Personally, I always thought their affair began during the production and continued for months, up to the Mini Coopering incident. My point is that’s not a momentary lapse. That’s a year-long affair. Oh well… at least Liberty dumped him and married a billionaire.

So the guy who made Snow White and the Huntsman and Ghost in the Shell thinks of himself as a true artist? Okay. 😀

He’s a dick and he doesn’t even try to hide it. Saying that cheating was a mistake and mistakes like that make his life interesting is just stupid and disrespectful on so many levels.

  2. bellebottomblues says:

wow I dont know that I would call destroying your marriage/family and tarnishing your professional reputation a ‘lapse’ or mistake that can be ‘brushed off, and walked away from”. Seems pretty life altering to me.

  3. Zapp Brannigan says:

Lobbing an emotional bomb into the lives of your wife and two young children on a global gossip level is a “momentary lapse” ? Ar$ehole.

  4. Stella says:

    Sleazeball.

I think the “momentary lapse” excuse is stupid and douchey. And yeah, maybe it has credence in the context of some random person you meet at a hotel bar on a business trip, but certainly not in this case. They’d been working together for months so it seemed much more like a premeditated (though not at all well thought out) hookup op than an oh-yeah-lets-meet-up-for-a-friendly-drive-around-town-oops-didn’t-mean-for-that-to-happen. That’s the kind of s$&t you do in high school. Then again it’s certainly believable that at the time the two of them had the cumulative maturity level of a sixteen year old, so who the hell knows.

  6. sauvage says:

    Yup, still a douche.

  7. Loo says:

Oh please, I seriously doubt it was a momentary lapse. I too think that affair was going on for months.

  8. Lou says:

How could if have been a year long affair when they weren’t even in the same country after filming? Very much something you made up. I always find the reaction to this story is very much dependant on how you feel about Kristen Stewart. Those who dislike her make it into way more than what it was and those who like her excuse it based on her age blah blah.

The truth is this shit goes on all the time on film sets .. think of all the blind vices most of you live for. This one just blew up because it was a very famous and love her or loathe her actress. And the fact that paps were stalking her all the time and got pics. It was completely reckless on her part. Well.. both obviously. But i just love how everyone acts like it’s so rare and that none of them have ever made mistakes.

My biggest issue was the double standards she and all women face in cheating situations. Women are actually the worst for judging and slut shaming. They really rip the girl apart. This comment section is no different.

The big “scandal” is that it was 2 peolple unhappy in heir relationships – liberty even said that their marriage was in trouble. Kristen was bored out of her brain with rpattz .. possibly figuring out why guys weren’t doing it fot her. It was a stupid mistake but i find all members involved moved on wayyyy faster than the internet gossip community. I mean .. liberty got with her husband pretty much straight away.

Besides .. why should an affair cost someone work when a monster is POTUS? What a load of bullshit

    • Mihaela says:

      Perfection.

    • Another Anne says:

I agree that there is often a double standard. But that’s not really the issue.

The “they were unhappy in their relationships” is a lame excuse, especially when little kids were involved. If you’re unhappy in your relationship, work on it or end it. And if you’re going to be an a$$h*le and cheat anyway, why do so publicly? Out in the open, when one of you is a paparazzi target? It was stupid and thoughtless. All the parties involved have moved on, yes, but those kids should never have been put through that mess.

It boils down to this: if you don’t want the public to judge your dirty business, don’t do your dirty business in public.

    • jenn12 says:

You have to be kidding. Not that women don’t get the monster’s load of s— dumped on them, but both Rupert and Kristen didn’t have the decency to end their relationships and then begin to move forward with their lives. There are two kids involved in Rupert’s former marriage, and Kristen used to take them out for ice cream, etc. They were two adults who couldn’t clean up their yards before moving to new houses. Making excuses for them is ridiculous. Yes, the POTUS is a POS and will hopefully be impeached, but what does that have to do with this? Rupert calling the affair a mistake, like he picked out the wrong flavor when buying ice cream, as opposed to imploding two relationships and hurting his kids? This has NOTHING to do with Kristen being liked, and everything to do with 2 selfish people who didn’t have the cojones to end their relationships before starting new ones. Which, by the way, is something Kristen is famous for doing, and still does in her relationships with women.

    • ELX says:

Wasn’t it reported that they started up the affair during the publicity tour? Whatever–if you are a huge star with a boyfriend who is a huge star and there are pics of your married side piece going down on you in a parking lot ( was it a Mickey D?) in the back of a Mini Cooper–well, your life and the lives of everyone associated with the pair of you are going to get blown up. That’s Hollywood. As for Rupert–white men usually end up just fine, why wouldn’t he shrug it off. That’s Hollywood too.

    • Ashley Nate says:

      Shut up, Kristen

    • Latte says:

I don’t know how unhappy they were in their respective relationships because I remember Liberty was shocked beyond anything and Rupert immediately came out with this cheesy statement after Kristen’s curt one about her loving Rob, about how he only has his family in this world. I also remember him doing an interview about how the first time he saw KS she had really low slung jeans on and a ciggie in her mouth and basically he was hinting how hot she was. He seems a real piece of work. Gross. Liberty handled it really well and I think she went to the GITS premiere with her super rich hubby.

    • Artemis says:

That affair was disgusting and creepy on many more levels than just 2 people cheating:

      – Sanders was Kristen’s boss
      – Kristen was almost half his age
      – Sanders cast his family in the film so Stewart knew their family unit unlike people who cheat with the abstract knowledge of the ‘family’ in the background
      – Kristen was cast as the DAUGHTER of his wife in the film
      – Both clearly said why they cheated: it made them feel excited. So incredibly immature. Especially Sanders, what kind of an example is he setting for his children? That’s not how you treat your partner no matter how crap you’re feeling. Let’s hope his children don’t think it’s exciting to ruin their personal relationships. There are better things to get excited about than getting into the pants of somebody who is in a relationship, while being in a relationship yourself. Their lives must be so dull that that’s what it takes to get high on life: Gross.
      – Both act like it’s something that just happened, a small mistake that was unavoidable: so selfish and messed up as they will never learn. It was a choice and if they don’t take accountability for their actions, it’s likely they’ll repeat this behaviour which Stewart has proven right in her relationships. Shameless.

And nah, it’s not a scandal to have a difficult marriage or boring relationship. That’s normal which is clearly what Stewart and Sanders couldn’t handle. Their respective ex-partners where more than willing to work and TRY to improve but when you get narcissistic partners who take the easy route and avoid their issue in favour for chasing ‘exciting’ side pieces than yeah, the relationship is going to fail. Monogamy is easy for people who are into monogamy, I can’t tell for Sanders as he’s a nobody and thus on nobody’s radar but Stewart clearly has a pattern: girl is not monogamous. If she was ‘bored’ than she could have left, not let a dude go down on her in a car. Goodbye.

    • raincoaster says:

      Rupert, get off the internet.

    • Veronica says:

Sanders was definitely the more repulsive of the two and Kirsten shared an unfair amount of the blame (though her higher celebrity profile likely had a lot to do with that in addition to her gender), but while I don’t see them carefully plotting this affair for a year, I highly doubt this was the first “lapse” in judgment. Generally, if it gets to the point where the two of you are bordering into public obscenity territory, it’s been building for awhile, even if it hasn’t crossed the threshold into sex. Plenty of time to wise up before that point. I’m fairly neutral about Kirsten, but I’m not giving her the pass on this one anymore than Sanders. They both knew what they were doing.

  9. Victoria says:

Mistakes (affairs) make life exciting? For who exactly?

  10. Lou says:

Oh and why would they talk about the affair in terms of length and depth of feeling? Would you guys air your dirty laundry in public if people wanted to know the ins and outs? We are all nosey twats but being realistic here … Obviously very few would but it is weird why anyone would wonder why they didn’t … and from that create their own timeline based on … their imaginations??

Anyway …. hav at it lol

    • Valois says:

Oh come on. No one expects him to open up, but if you decide to talk about it (no one forced him to do so), you might at least pretend to feel sorry about it.

“I deeply regret my actions and the damage I’ve caused, but this is a private matter between me and my family and I continue to make up for my hurtful behavior in private.”

Something like that is actually less private than what he said and it sounds less dickish.

He chose to talk about it and the way he decided to address is is worse than not adressing it at all.

  11. OTHER RENEE says:

I always wondered whether the entire thing was a setup. I mean RPatz and KStew breaking up in some big way so that no one would ever accuse them of having a fake relationship that just happened to end as their movie series ended. Liberty Ross finds a billionaire before the ink is dry on her divorce papers. They’re stupid enough to get caught in a car when she knew she was constantly being followed by the press.

Ok I admit I’ve read one too many mysteries and my mind just goes in that direction. But I did turn to my ex husband after Nancy Kerrigan got whacked in the knee and said, “I’ll bet Tonya Harding is behind this.” So sometimes I am right!

    • Sage says:

I think it was a setup too. The photos looked so staged. US Weekly had the exclusive photos where she looked aware of the pap in every shot. Making out in her car that does not have tinted windows….Everything about their ‘affair’ was SO public.

  12. mary watkins says:

I can see why his wife divorced him.
Poor girl at least she got half his fortune for her pain.

  13. Daria says:

Liberty Ross is the true role model for scorned, betrayed women everywhere. She dumped his ass and upgraded like a boss.

    • Bread and Circuses says:

And she was very classy about the dumping, too. She gave the marriage six months, in case things could be salvaged, and she never said a word to the press about it either way.

  14. Loo says:

Talking about this topic doesn’t mean that one isn’t “over it.” I am way over it and in no way hate Stewart. I actually believe that she was treated unfairly by the press. I just never believed the it was a one time deal thing that Stewart fans say it was so that they can absolve her of guilt nor do I believe the silly “it was a set up,” rumors.

  15. Ariana says:

The “headline-making affair” shouldn’t ruin his career, but that movie (Snow White) should’ve, because that was extraordinarily bad.

  16. Loo says:

Well Ghost in the shell just flopped so we’ll see what happens.

  17. Sara says:

I can’t believe how lax these people are about wrecking a families life. When are no children involved okay fine but damn, do they know how devastating it is on children when parents get divorced? These two should be ashamed of themselves, so selfish.
