Victoria Beckham: ‘I’m really good value at a dinner party – I like to have fun’

Don Rickles

Victoria Beckham covers the May issue of Elle UK to promote her label’s collaboration with Target on a mass-market capsule collection. It’s still remarkable to me that Posh Spice is truly a legitimate fashion designer now. I generally find her collections to be too heavily borrowed from Roland Mouret, The Row and, like, Herve Leger. But I guess people like her stuff and her business keeps growing and growing. What makes me a little bit happy though is that no matter what, she always gets questions about the Spice Girls. Never 4get!! Some highlights from Posh’s Elle UK interview:

Why she’s happier as fashion designer than a pop star: “Being in the Spice Girls was so much fun, but I was never the best singer or dancer. I learned an enormous amount during that time, though: the staging, the lighting, the costumes – the package excited me. But I love fashion – this is what I’m genuinely interested in… When I look back at my past self, [the way I dressed and behaved] was probably a sign of my insecurities. I feel quite confident in myself now – getting older doesn’t bother me.”

She’s a “good value” dinner guest: “I don’t tend to go to parties, but if I do go out for dinner, I like to have a drink and really have fun… I’m really good value at a dinner party – I want to relax and have a laugh. I like to have fun, and I think that often surprises people.”

David Beckham is great at childcare: “Yes, he’s great. During fashion week, when I’m working, the children will be in New York and he’s already planned to take them to museums then out for dinner on Saturday night, so he is very good at that sort of thing – as am I. That’s how you can show your support in a marriage, by saying, ‘You know what, I’ve got this.’ That’s what makes a good partnership.”

Balancing work & family: “David and I both respect that each of us are very, very busy; we are both running big businesses, but we do put the phones down, and sometimes we just talk. When David was on Desert Island Discs on Radio 4 recently, it was great to sit as a family and listen.”

[From Elle UK]

Especially after his retirement – but even before then – David was a very hands-on father. What I hate is that people act as if that’s noteworthy or abnormal. Even Elle UK treats it like David has to “babysit” the kids while Victoria works. He’s not a babysitter, he’s the father, and he’s always seemed very involved with all of his kids. Why isn’t that assumed?

As for Posh being a “good value” at dinner parties… do you believe that? I’ve always felt like Victoria is probably more fun than she lets on, but she doesn’t strike me as the wittiest guest at any given dinner party. Posh just seems too pinched and controlled to really let loose and gossip. Plus, how can she be a “good value” when she won’t eat dinner?

I thought she was going to say she’s good value as a party guest cause she doesn’t eat much!

I hate when I hear the term “he’s babysitting”….um, he’s the Dad! He isn’t babysitting he’s with his kids, cheese & crackers! But back to the story, I don’t see Victoria as the life to any party….i just can’t imagine her being to completely let loose & have fun, the hamster wheel is always spinning

She did a TV special years ago when they moved to LA. She was Hilarious!!!!!! I totally believe this

I saw some of that show and she WAS hilarious! Like someone I’d want to actually hang out with. She seems to have a sense of humor about herself and isn’t afraid of a good shenanigan.

her interview with Ali G in the 90s was AMAZING. She is witty and hilarious.

YES watch the Ali G interview. David barely said a word. She saved their asses back then, she was awesome.

      • Melodycalder says:

There was a moment where she was interviewing staff and she asked the lady if she found David attractive. Omg. One of the best moments on TV. It still sticks with me after all this time

She seems very contented and on the ball and relaxed (for Vicks) as of late… ad really Atta Girl!

I also detest when fathers taking care of kids is considered “babysitting” or when being a hands-on dad is celebrated as a strange achievement.
But I don’t think that’s what Victoria is saying here at all. I read it to mean that David’s the main parent when she is really busy. I think she is talking more about how they manage their working/parenting dynamic and not about how David’s a great dad.

I’m glad you mentioned how ‘borrowed’ her designs are. They’re nice enough, wearable and I can see why people like them, but I’ve yet to see a single design from her that doesn’t look like a less interesting version of what some major designers were doing a year earlier.

I’m assuming no one in the industry calls her out for it because she’s pretty late off the mark at getting these ‘inspired by’ designs out, usually well behind the chain stores, so it’s not cutting into anyone’s profits. But I can’t take her seriously as a designer. She’s more of a high end Zara, taking what was hot on the runway last season and removing a few details to make it more wearable for the average woman.

I totally agree with everything you said. Like I said in my post below I really find she borrows heavily from The Row and Celine. I’m surprised how she’s hyped and not called out for it.

  7. Mika says:

I’m not crazy about her fashion line either. I find The Row and Celine do the same style a lot better. And I’m not crazy about the Beckhams since I read (from various sources) that they are very bad tippers, they don’t give anything on top of the service included in the bill. I’m far from rich but as an ex-waitress I always make an effort.

    • Rae says:

I don’t get this, but perhaps it’s because I’m British. The inbuilt service charge is an inbuilt tip. Why would you need to double tip?

    • SpareMe says:

Tipping culture is very different in the UK and the US. When I went to London, we tipped as normal and I think it weirded some out our servers out. I don’t think you tip servers in the UK or if you do, it’s like >10%.

      • Rae says:

I make sure to tip 10% at least for my meals, which is more than suitable here, but I know the USA has higher expectations due to poor pay.

But if I had a service charge already added on my bill, I wouldn’t tip on top unless the service was really good or the service charge was obviously very low.

What is the usual service charge %? Is it lower than the usually expected 15-20% US tip? Then I would understand. If it’s already around that, then I think people are just being a little greedy because they see rich people and dollar signs pop up in their eyes.

  8. wheneight says:

Oh, I think she’s hilarious. If you watch interviews with her or her 72 Questions with Vogue thing or whatever, she’s very funny, very witty.

  9. Rae says:

    Absolutely love Victoria!

I would definitely have her as a dinner party guest; far more so than David.

  10. Your mom says:

I loved her reality show from a few years back!! She seems down to earth, doesn’t take herself too seriously and a fun person to gab with over drinks! I’ve always liked her since I got that little glimpse into who she is.
