Is Gigi Hadid’s 22nd birthday cake as appetizing as British breakfast beans?

happy birthday to my everything ❤️

A post shared by Zayn Malik (@zayn) on

Gigi Hadid celebrated her 22nd birthday over the weekend. Ordinarily, I wouldn’t care. I mean, I do care – as I’ve said before, I sort of unironically like the Hadid sisters – but ordinarily I wouldn’t care enough to write about it unless there was some scandalous or noteworthy angle. There is nothing like that. By all accounts, Gigi celebrated her birthday with her sister, her mom, her closest friends and her boyfriend Zayn Malik. Bella and Gigi painted, went on a helicopter ride, wore pink wigs and documented most of the day on social media.

So why is this noteworthy at all? Because of the cake!! Zayn posted a nice Instagram (above) calling Gigi his “everything,” which is very sweet and very “they’re 22 years old, you guys, they love breakfast beans.” But then Gigi posted a photo of the cake Zayn bought for her birthday. MY GOD that is some cake:

I’ve been debating with myself if there’s fondant on this cake. I don’t think there is? I think this is just regular icing, although it looks really stiff and not quite edible? I guess I’m primed to think that buttercream icing is the best and everything else kind of sucks, unless it’s the cheap-o grocery-store cake icing which is so sugary it makes my teeth hurt. So, basically, I’m asking: is Gigi’s cake appetizing? Meh.

I love British “breakfast” beans, as well as most British foods. That cake looks good…I mean it’s CAKE !

    • bluhare says:

Me too. But then I grew up on British baked beans. When we last went back, my American brother in law and my nephews initially turned their noses up, but by the end of the trip they were shoveling them in. And now my sister buys them from the local British shop and does British breakfasts on the weekend.

And I love British hard icing on cakes.

      • me says:

I wish we had a British shop in my town…but we don’t. I miss British chocolate, and crisps, and cakes, and cookies ! I miss toast and beans…cheese and onion pasties…chips from the chip shop…yummm miss it all !

      • bluhare says:

We have a hard time getting British chocolate over here. Ever since Hershey bought Cadbury they won’t let imported Cadbury in. We have to have American Cadbury and it’s not as good.

    • LondonLozza says:

Arghhh!! We do not call them British Breakfast Beans. EVER. They’re Baked Beans. And the best ones are made by Heniz.

    • Heinz beans….when you really and truly have a hangover and cannot fathom creating any real food. I tried to like them…really I did…..but to me they will always be the Kraft Mac and Cheese of the British foodstuffs world.

  2. Sullivan says:

Right now, I would eat that whole cake. Give it to me.

  3. mia girl says:

My first impression – looks like a plastic cake model from the display case… it’s almost too perfect.

    • teacakes says:

yeah, I was wondering if she’d hold a real cake like that with her eyes closed and the thing held at an angle. That’s a recipe for splat!

  4. LadyMTL says:

I love dessert in all its forms (cake, pie, ice cream, tarts, baklava, macarons, you name it I love it) so yes, this looks very appetizing to me. 😀

  5. Megan says:

    Buttercream frosting is divine.

    • detritus says:

yes it does! and real buttercream is the only icing worthy of touching a cake.

this looks likes traditional buttercream, which is fairly firm at fridge temp, if you look at the texture it ain’t fondant.

fondant is more akin to plasticine or fimo clay, and just about as appetising.

  6. Erinn says:

I don’t know – it just looks like REALLY well done buttercream. I can see some slight imperfections in it – but it could also have been chilled a bunch before the photos were taken which would have hardened it up a bit.

    • Betsy says:

I agree. They used one of those “scrapers” that makes an edge, but that is just real buttercream, Swiss maybe? It’s a real b to make.

  7. Mia says:

THANK you! Hahaha! I saw this on People and while I do like the Hadid sisters as well I don’t care too much about birthdays. What DID catch my eye though was the picture of that truly unappealing cake! Yeesh.

Oh and I’m with you–buttercream/fondant icing for the WIN!

  8. Harryg says:

British breakfast beans are really good! That cake looks like it’s plastic.

  9. Alleycat says:

They are so ridiculous. Everything is so documented (which I guess is typical early 20’s behavior), but it just comes across as forced. The cake looks nothing special which is shocking because she’s like a billionaire. Why would you not go all out on your cake?!?

  10. SM says:

I’ll take beans over this cake any morning or day.

  11. Suzie says:

Well Gigi is a very lucky girl. They look super cute in that cake pic.

  12. Wellsie says:

    Honking for beans!

  13. Littlestar says:

Why is the cake the color of my elderly neighbor’s bathroom? I’m lost on the British breakfast bean thing, I eat beans for breakfast here and there but beans are part of my native ancestral diet sooo I’m kind of lost on the British breakfast bean comments lol.

  14. Lucy says:

I feel like, no matter how sweet their pictures are (and they are indeed lovely), I just cannot buy their relationship. I still see PR written all over it. Anyways, at least it looks like she had a nice time.

    • Ayra. says:

I feel you there Lucy. They’re pretty though, so there’s that.

    • kimbers says:

It doesn’t vibe well. Dont know why but they do vibe fake, and she vibes desperate:(it would suck to want so much attention for something so unreal 🙁

  15. crazydaisy says:

She can always use it for weight training. Hah! What are the chances she even tastes the cake? (I bet she doesn’t eat much, gotta stay skinny to model, etc…)

    • Mary says:

Exactly my thought! Like she’s even gonna eat any of that cake LOL

      • Matahari says:

Her mom (former model and Beverly Hills Housewife) Yolanda Hadid wouldn’t let her have more than one bite of birthday cake on her 18th or 19th birthday. She told Gigi she needs to stay “on the skinny side” because “that’s what’s popular in France and Italy”. So the whole not eating thing has been ingrained in her unfortunately.

  16. What Was That? says:

As a vegetarian..a can of baked beans in tomato sauce..is an option as so much of a breakfast is meat based…bacon,sausage..
I love cheese on toast..Welsh Rarebit..which is a melted cheese with a Worcester Sauce or mustard seasoning mix then grilled..with beans…anytime of the day..lunch..supper
Whatever you describe some people will find it unappetising..but it isn’t…
If you live in a colder climate a hot breakfast or meal is always great!

  17. teacakes says:

If that is a real cake, that looks like buttercream icing to me, not fondant – the sides of the cake especially.

I’m shocked Gigi and Zayn have lasted this long, but good luck to them. And I actually don’t mind her as a model, at least she has some life in her face for pictures.

  18. Megan says:

She won’t be eating any of that cake.

  19. Lady Rain says:

That cake looks so good, such a shame that she’s not likely to eat it.

I found out about yummy British treats in the form of Hob Nobs chocolate biscuits during a visit to London a few years ago. They’re not easy to find stateside, but glad to find them on Amazon.

  20. Mei says:

I love how even though Zayn tries to be all hardcore and serious (case in point, his really REALLY rubbish video for Still Got TIme), he blatantly dotes on Gigi and it’s the sweetest thing. I unashamedly love them together.

It’s all about baked beans on toast, topped with cheese and grilled just a bit. Limiting them to breakfast is missing out!!
