Jackie Cruz of OITNB: Racism is starting to feel normal. It’s scary

'Orange is The New Black' Season 5 Celebration - Arrivals
As an aside to open, I stopped watching Orange is The New Black a couple of episodes into the third season, which was back in 2015. Why is it that so many shows lose the thread and start to go downhill in the third season? My theory is that they cram too much into the episodes that they start to change the character’s personalities in ways that don’t seem realistic. The best shows, the rare ones that stay consistent, are slow burning ones like Breaking Bad and The Americans. They can seem “boring” at first but once you get into them you see the artistry and are hooked. Anyway I digress and OITNB probably picked up after that, I just needed to give it a chance.

Bustle interviewed Dominican-American actress Jackie Cruz of Orange is The New Black (Marisol/Flaca). You may not recognize her as she recently went very curly with her hair and on the show she has straight black hair. (At first I thought it was a wig for the photoshoot, but she’s had this hair at several recent events.) She gave a lot of impressive quotes about the new political climate in the US and about racism in 45’s America. Jackie hasn’t been on my radar before but she definitely is now. Before landing the job on OITNB she had a few small parts on television, she had an album out and was working as model and waitress in New York City.

On President Trump and the importance of our voices
“Our president — or number 45 — was a reality star, why’s his opinion more important than mine? And I was scared to tell you who I voted for, or what I believed in [before the election], and not anymore because I learned how important my voice is and we need to share it. And each one of our voices are important. It doesn’t matter how many followers you have, you can make a difference.”

On the prison system and racism
“I’ve learned so much about what’s going on in prison and how messed up it is, and it’s so real and we’re bringing awareness to that… Even the racism in prison, our groups — it’s crazy how it’s happening in real life, as well. Racism is kind of, not OK, but kind of awake in our environment right now. Maybe it was hidden, but now people think its OK to be racist and it’s not, and in prison everyone’s racist and it’s normal in there. And it’s starting to feel normal in our real world. I don’t know if I’m saying this right. I’ve never even talked about this, but I’m realizing it right now and it’s kind of scary. It’s really scary.”

On starting her own production company, Unspoken Film.
“I’m telling stories that we’re afraid to talk about. And I want diverse women on screen, and writers, producers, directors.”

[From Bustle]

I like how she was both outspoken about witnessing increased racism and how she admitted that she’s scared and doesn’t know how to talk about it yet. I think a lot of us feel that way. As a white woman I’ve become more aware of sexism, as it’s similarly become more blatant, while gradually realizing that I’ve benefited from living in a bubble of privilege all my life. Yes it’s harder to be a woman in this climate, but not as hard as being a woman of color. Our voices are important and I appreciate her speaking about this and being vulnerable about it too.

This is how she used to look, she looks totally different now with curly hair:

She said exactly how I feel. Although I’m outspoken about these issues I cannot deny the fear I felt on Nov 9th. It’s crippling

Holy sh*t she looks AMAZING with the short, curly hair. LOVE that last photo.

RE Racism on the rise: Yes it has always been here, lurking (and many times NOT lurking), but now it’s completely and totally out in the open, with unapologetic racists and xenophobes wearing their bigotry like a badge of honor.

I think when Obama was POTUS, racists for the most part kept their racism on the DL when in the presence of other whites, but now they feel empowered and emboldened to tell anyone exactly how they feel.

Any one of my friends on FB who have their settings on “share with world” always manages to lure in at least one racist troll from the cobwebs of the internet. Yesterday I spent a good half hour arguing with a blatantly unapologetic racist.

He tried to tell me that Obama created racism, that police brutality against blacks was greatly exaggerated and often made up, and that racial profiling is warranted as blacks are the most violent among us. He wanted to know why “these people” can’t take responsibility for their circumstances.

I had a lot of fun providing him with links about the Alt-Right, white supremacist groups, and RW terrorism. I then presented him with a link to the most violent states in the country. Hint: almost ALL red states with majority white populations and lax gun control laws. These red states also happen to be the biggest leeches on our Fed government. Why won’t these white folks take responsibility for their circumstances???

Not surprisingly, after presented with all my source material, he ghosted me. But I don’t care, I have all the validation I need in every link that I posted because facts are your friend, Republicans. Sure, facts can mess up your pre-existing narrative, but they are crucial to understanding the TRUTH, something these people care very little about.

I”m just starting the newest season. So far, I am loving that the women of color are the focus. It’s been the strength of this show, telling these stories…
One subplot concerns white privilege, and I’m glad that’s being acknowledged.
Hoping the rest of the season doesn’t disappoint.
Jackie looks amazing- she is having fun with fashion and styling I would never have the courage for…I kind of miss Flaca’s signature eye makeup, though…

It has always been ok to be racist in the US. It’s just now more in the open in a way that white people finally realize that something is wrong.

DING DING DING, Not Only that, but the addendum that WE’VE BEEN TELLING YALL

      • Alex says:

Right?! Now that white people are finally “waking up” i’m already over having convos about this. Its no longer convenient for me to spend my emotional labor on this. You want to ignore that America is racist for years until NOW. Well now I’m over it

      Basically.

    • Sixer says:

I just read a good book on the UK version of this – Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge.

Would recommend (to white people with ears that want to listen).

    • Sigh... says:

Yeah. These aren’t new racists with new power/influence or something. I think more ppl are just (reluctantly) waking up to THEIR OWN in-/direct involvement (from silence to overt aggression).

    • Tanya says:

Hello. Someone answer this call because it’s right on time.

      Yes!

  5. Kate says:

According to some, it’s not racism but economic anxiety.

  6. Alba says:

I dont watch this show! But I love this actress looks and face. Very attractive in a unique way.

  7. I finished the new season in 2 days. I couldn’t stop watching it. Went in a total Netflix binge and went into the just one more state of mind. I won’t spoil it, but it’s worth watching. If you don’t watch any other season this one is worth watching. It really highlights a lot of issues people of color experience. It also mentions white privilege like someone else mentioned. It’s clear we have a broken system and that prisons are just ways to make money. The inmates aren’t seen as people they’re just another paycheck. They don’t want to treat them like humans and help reform them to go back to society they’d rather see them fail and come back. It’s really sad and honestly if I was rich I would totally open a prison with the mindset to reform. I don’t like to see people treated like animals because I have the idea that if you treat people like animals they’re going to act like one.

Fun fact: waaaay back there was a kardashian story line about Kourtney possibly getting involved with a lady, and Jackie Cruz was that lady. It was painfully obvious it was all for tv but I randomly stumbled on it again not long ago and was like, ” is that Jackie Cruz?” Random and only mildly relevant but there you go. On a side note, i love her-she seems to lovely.

You are not wrong OITNB, has fizzled. You saved yourself not eatching the 4th and 5th seasons.
