Miranda Lambert on being famous: ‘I hate cameras. I don’t love the spotlight’

She’s been laying low for a while, but now, everything’s coming up Miranda. The 33-year-old county crooner is the cover girl for the November issue of Redbook, which arrives on newsstands on October 24. In the interview, she talks about the music biz, the plight of women in country music and and her passions. Here are some highlights:

On the disparity between male and female country singers on the radio:
“It’s B.S., straight up! Carrie Underwood still struggles, and that just blows my mind because she’s got a million hits and she’s Carrie Freakin’ Underwood. I tell them at the radio stations, ‘Just play one of us; it doesn’t have to be me. Then we all win.’ I’ll fight for it until I can’t no more.”

On the three “M’s” in her life:
“Music and mutts—pretty much all I live for are those two things. Men used to be on that list, but I cut that one out. Just kidding! It was the three M’s, and now it’s two. No, it is three: The last one is Miranda.”

On being in the music industry:
“I’m not actually a very good famous person at all. I hate cameras. I don’t love the spotlight. It was a big shocker to me that the music business is 80% business and 20% music. I was like, ‘I didn’t know I signed up for all this other stuff.’”

On her favorite way to spend a night:
Shark Tank and yoga pants, and I’m the happiest person. I watch Tiny House Nation on a Friday night, and I’m like, ‘This is it! Frozen pizza. Woo!’”

She jokes that she’s removed “men” from her “three Ms”, but she and singer beau Anderson East celebrated their two-year anniversary in September. Miranda commemorated the day inn Instagram with a cute pic, captioning it, “Oh how I remember well, sunset on September 12th…” and adding the hashtag #2yearstoday.

As for her love of mutts, Miranda is fully committed. She, through her Mutt Nation Foundation, helped dogs who were displaced by Hurricane Harvey in Texas. She posted a precious pic with an adorable, sleepy pooch, stating, “Too tired for a full update from today but I will give yall a recap tomorrow morning about @muttnationfoundation and our efforts for #hurricaneharvey animal rescues.”

And, of course, we can’t forget the music. Miranda is working overtime on that front. She recently joined Green Day to record a new version of their 2016 song “Ordinary World” which will be released on the band’s November 17 album, Greatest Hits: God’s Favorite Band. Hmmm…I pegged God as more of a Journey fan.

Miranda is also set to perform at the CMA Awards on November 8. She’s up for five awards this year, including Female Vocalist of the Year (this year marks her 11th nomination in that category. She’s won the award six consecutive times.) She’s also nominated for video of the year for “Vice” (I LOVE that song) and album of the year for The Weight of These Wings. “Tin Man” is up for Single and Song of the Year. Miranda is currently the most awarded female artist in CMA history, having earned 12 trophies since 2010.

And, if that’s not enough, she recently announced her 23-city “Livin’ Like Hippies” tour, kicking off January 18 in Greenville SC, (with a stop in Atlanta on January 20, if any wants to get me tickets for Christmas….)

I don’t know about you, but I can so relate to Miranda. To quote one of her songs, “We Should Be Friends,” but I would have to insist on delivery pizza over frozen. Other than that, bring on the pooches, yoga pants and Shark Tank.

I’ve never heard of this woman, but I don’t listen to country music. When celebrities complain about how much they hate cameras and being in the spotlight, it makes me roll my eyes. Cameras and being in the spotlight are part of how you become and stay famous. If they don’t like it, why did they even start a career in show buisness in the first place?

You have never of this women because you don’t listen to country music? How long have you been reading here? I find it hard to believe you have never heard of her if you have been reading here for any amount of time.

      • Whoopsy Daisy says:

I’ve only heard of her because of this site. Country musicians are not really known outside of America.

      • Beth says:

Believe what you want, but no, I’ve honestly never heard of her. I’m a huge metal fan, I have Motorhead playing loudly in my earbuds right this second, and I’ve never heard of her. I don’t read every single article. I’ve been here for years. Not a crime to have never heard of a few celebrities

    • Velvet Elvis says:

She does it because she loves making records and performing….the photo shoots and other crap unfortunately goes along with it.

    • klc says:

      Smugness isn’t a crime

    • Meggles says:

Because they love music? I work with artists every day. Most of them genuinely have a passion for their art and a deep seated need to pursue their art. Our society is obsessed with celebrity and civilians think being a celeb must be awesome and desirable (and God knows there are enough people desperate and willing to do anything just for fame), but the reality is many actors/writers/singers etc. really don’t like fame and regard having to do interviews and all the celeb nonsense as the price they have to pay for being able to do their art for a living.

I’m not a celebrity at all but I do have to do photoshoots and interviews and have a small amount of fan attention, and it’s horrible. But it’s a necessary evil for me to be able to do my job (writing). Not to be rude but if someone has never experienced it, they have absolutely no idea. Zero. It doesn’t matter how many gossip blogs or tabloids a person reads, no one on the outside has the slightest idea what a high profile career in entertainment/arts is really like.

    • bikki says:

I get her actually. I’d HATE to get unwanted attention when all I’d wanna do is play my guitar and share that with fellow music lovers. just because I create art for others to delight in does NOT mean that my private life needs to compromised.

  2. Betsy says:

Her music doesn’t do anything for me (except Hush, Hush with the Pistol Annies), but I really like her as a person.

  3. Lizzie says:

i’ll buy the redbook to get the details on that cute blue crewneck sweater in the 2nd picture. her hair is so pretty.

I love Miranda’s music, I buy all of her stuff and am a huge country music fan. I listen to country radio stations, live in Minneapolis. Its true, it’s like 95% male vocals being played on the radio. That being said, Carrie doesn’t have the greatest songs, they have become formulaic. I wasn’t into them 3 albums ago and keep hoping she’ll switch it up. Kelsea Ballerini’s album was played a lot, she had great song choices. I love Faith, but she doesn’t pick songs for the radio. Can I beg and plead to have Tanya Tucker do a duet album with Elle King? Their voices are similar and Tanya still has the pipes!

  5. Zondie says:

I’ve seen her in concert and she seemed almost shy on stage. I really like her songs.

  6. Happy21 says:

I didn’t used to be much of a fan. I found her annoying despite liking a lot of her music. However, since the Blake split she has grown on me a lot. I just say her back in September live for the first time and she was really good, better than I expected. She was emotional, she was raw and it came across very real. And she was nervous which is always nice to see because so many performers just come on stage and act like god. Being nervous is a natural reaction.
    I wish her well.
As far as women on country radio, it sucks. I don’t even listen to country radio anymore due to the bro-country, pop-country crap that is played now. Miranda’s latest album was amazing and she got very little radio play besides ‘Vice’. And I dislike Carrie Underwood and I think that her songs are repetitive and I get sick of hearing about women scorned from her which would probably be why she’s not getting played. Radio needs to pay attention to these women because they have so much to say but country radio is not Americana (code for country that doesn’t suck in my books). Miranda, Brandy Clark, Kacey Musgraves, Margo Price, Amanda Shires need some play!

    • Veronica says:

Yeah, she seems to have undergone some soul searching since the split, which I hope is genuine for her own sake. She’s a very talented singer and songwriter, and it’s nice to see a woman in country unafraid to take a stand for herself. You get the feeling a lot of them have to “toe the line” to feel like they can make it.

    • Here or There says:

Thanks for these recommendations. I love country and have been wanting to get more female artists to listen to. I really like Brandy Clark after a few listens on spotify!!

  7. Shannon says:

I like her! She seems nice and I love her music 🙂

  8. Loca says:

    Love Miranda! She looks beautiful.
