Marcia Gay Harden on her gay son: I just want to make sure he can have a family

I’ve always admired Marcia Gay Harden as an actress, even though she chose to appear in the Fifty Shades movies. The 58-year-old, who won an Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in 2000’s Pollock, isn’t only an exceptional actress, she’s an exceptional mom to boot.

Marcia and her ex-husband, Thaddaeus Scheel, are also parents to three kids, 13-year-old twins Hudson and Julitta, and 19-year-old daughter Eulala. Hudson is gay, and, much like Sally Field, Marcia supports her son 100%. She recently took him to the Family Equality Council’s annual Impact Awards, held at L.A.’s Globe Theater. The event, which pays tribute to LBGTQ families and those who have fought for equality ,was also attended by Armie Hammer, Beau Bridges, Lance Bass and Queer Eye’s Karamo Brown. Marcia shared a photo with Hudson on Instagram and told US Magazine that “The cause is dear to me, yes. My son is gay. I just want to make sure he gets to have a family when he wants one.”

Hudson is a cute kid, and a pretty skilled makeup artist. His Instagram feed features some of his most gorgeous looks, including a tribute to RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars 3 champion, Trixie Mattel. O.M.G.

Marcia has been an outspoken supporter and ally for LBGTQ causes for years. Back in October, she tweeted a photo with cast of her CBS series Code Black wearing purple for GLAAD’s annual Spirit Day.

The actress also has some sage advice for her fellow parents. In another Instagram post from the Impact Awards, Marcia posed with actor David Marshall Grant, who co-starred with her in the original Broadway production of Angels in America. In the accompanying caption, she advised, “just b good parents. Its not your gender or sexual preference that make u a good parent.” She added that accepting differences is the sign of “good parenting.” Can I get an “Amen”? What a great mom. Brava, Marcia.

I have two gay sons who are both thriving academically and socially. I’ve always told them that they can do whatever they want as long as they’re hurting themselves or anyone else. It seems to have worked OK for them.

  4. Neelyo says:

Don’ t forget access to housing and job discrimination. These things are still huge problems, especially for minorities as well as the rise in hate crimes against the LGBTQ community since the Trump administration took power.

    AMEN. I have goosebumps.

You could say that her middle name predicted the future.

I’ve always loved her, and her son is a cutie. All the best to him.

We have mutual friends-and she is a great mom.

Love her even more! She was great in Trophy Wife and made a good pairing with Dennis Haysbert.

  10. Mrs. Darcy says:

It’s great she is lending her voice to her son’s /LGBTQ rights. I was aquaintances with a relative of her ex husband’s, who wasn’t super nice about Marcia but it was maybe down to divorce messiness Idk. I have always liked her as an actress anyway.

  11. Betsy says:

I love/hated her on First Wives Club, and just loved her in Mona Lisa Smile and I think it was Law and Order SVU where she was whacky good.

  12. Harryg says:

She’s lovely. She was great in Pollock and Miller’s Crossing. She’s always great.

  13. Anastasia says:

I prayed for a gay son. Got a straight daughter. Almost. 😉

    • Jag says:

So you don’t think that your straight daughter is as good as a gay son would have been? I feel for your daughter. Perhaps you might want to look at her good qualities and see that she’s amazing in her own right – gay or not. There’s nothing wrong with being straight and female.

  14. Amanda says:

He’s only 13, what if he decides he doesn’t want kids? I thought she was talking about a 30 year old son or something.

    • Jag says:

Yeah, I wish that she had said “IF he wants a family.” The wording doesn’t allow for those people who don’t wish to couple.

I’m going to be 49 soon and am single. No idea if I’ll ever marry, and that’s okay with me. Not everyone has to marry and have children to be happy.
