Angelina Jolie: Queen Elizabeth is ‘a really lovely lady’ who ‘cares about the future’

Queen Elizabeth II receives guests at Buckingham Palace

As we already discussed, Angelina Jolie took part in an ITV documentary about one of Queen Elizabeth’s environmental initiatives. The Queen’s Canopy is one of QEII’s special projects, encouraging forest conservation around the British Commonwealth, as well as a project to plant more trees around the world. The ITV documentary is called The Queen’s Green Planet, and it feels like Angelina Jolie has a significant role in it. Apparently, the documentary includes Angelina and her children planting trees in Namibia. Angelina also talks on-camera about what the Queen means to her.

Angelina Jolie embarks on her latest adventure in a new documentary — with an assist from none other than Queen Elizabeth! In the ITV special The Queen’s Green Planet, Jolie visits Namibia with her six kids to highlight forest conservation in Africa.

“For us to come here and say to the children, ‘This is why it’s important to plant a tree,’ that’s the biggest message I can teach my kids, and it’s something that they’ve certainly learned from Her Majesty and her message,” the Oscar winner, 42, explains in The Queen’s Green Planet, which airs in the U.K. on April 16. The two women met in 2014, when Jolie received an honorary damehood from Queen Elizabeth, 91, at Buckingham Palace for services to U.K. foreign policy and her campaign to end sexual violence in war zones.

Speaking in the new documentary, Jolie says of her kids, “They ask me, ‘Why is it so important to her?’ You know when you sit up at night in a tent with your kids and they say, ‘Why does the Queen of England care about planting trees in Africa?’ What it comes down to is you say to the kids, ‘You know really, you don’t know her, you can’t understand all that it means to be a queen and all that. But you try to say, ‘You know she’s just this really lovely lady who really cares about people around the world, and she really cares about the future, and she wants your grandkids and her grandkids to be able to be running around, enjoying nature and other cultures, and the importance of other cultures.’ She thinks that really matters and I agree with her.”

As Jolie she watches her kids “trying their best to dig a hole,” she says in the film, “I bet they’re fighting over the biggest shovel. It says it all when you see the local tribe, the bushmen come in and their reaction to it. The trees affect the environment, the soil, the shade, the natural resources, the animals, the ecosystem — but also how it affects the local cultures. They live very dependent on every single plant and they use every single plant, and when certain trees, certain species disappear, that affects an entire culture and their way of life and they start to die out.”

[From People]

Honestly, I hope they follow up this documentary with a documentary about what it took for Angelina Jolie to sign on to this project. I want to know if the Queen was playing with her corgis and the idea just struck her: “That American girl with all the tattoos – let’s see if she wants to plant some trees somewhere!” And how is the call made? Does Buckingham Palace have Angelina’s direct number? Did the palace have to call William Hague because Hague had her direct line? This is what I want to know. As for what Angelina says here – it’s adorable. The kids fighting over who gets the big shovel, Angie-the-mom trying to explain why the Queen cares about trees, all of it.

Here are some additional clips of QEII. The sundial! The joke about Trump!

Angelina continues with her good work after the divorce. I notice Brad has dropped the humanitarian act now that he’s not with Angie anymore

    • Toot says:

Yep! Angelina is consistent. She’s cared about her causes for almost two decades and isn’t fickle like her ex.

    • VirgiliaCoriolanus says:

Seriously? The most public thing he has is Make It right–and they are in the process of fixing the rotting wood/homes. Obviously they’re not going to be building new homes while the old ones are falling apart. Other than that, there is the JP Foundation, which is still going and is funded by both of their salaries…….otherwise, Brad has not done any sort of public charity work. I would even class MIR as not very public (although I know otherwise), because beyond a few pics from years and years ago, I haven’t seen it reach the same attention/national level as Angelina’s work does. Because she is on a totally different level.

Criticize him for a lot, but not that. I mean…just really?

      • Joy says:

MIR , the same one that’s been sued twice recently, lost it’s director and hasn’t had a fundraiser in years? Other than the lawsuits that got minimal coverage, it doesn’t seem to exist much anymore. But then again maybe I’m wrong?

      • Rayan says:

I applaud celebrities who do charity work away from the limelight/attention.

      • Joy says:

@Rayan lol you’re funny, so so funny. It’s Brad Pitt were talking about, away from the limelight lol. If that’s some kind of dig at Angelina, you know she’s a UNHCR Special Envoy right? Part of that involves using her platform to bring awareness to issues. And btw there’s lots that Angelina does that never makes it onto the pages of tabloids and gossip sites.

  2. Sparkly says:

I love Queen Elizabeth. She really seems like a cool lady.

    • whatWHAT? says:

she’s a lot funnier and “cooler” than people know. of COURSE she has to put on the Queen act in public (for the most part), but in private she’s apparently quite a hoot.

I have a family member who worked in the State Dept for years (with Condi Rice and HRC) and he said the Queen is quite a character.

  3. Who ARE these people? says:

The joke about Trump which she hastily tried to cover by adding Obama!

    • Jess says:

I saw that too. She recovered quickly but it’s obvious she was just covering up what she really thought about Trump!

    • Merritt says:

She will be happy if a state visit from Trump is delayed forever.

    • Who ARE These People? says:

Suspect she’s sorry-not-sorry she said that about Trump.

    • Olenna says:

Yeah, that jibe was priceless! She was looking all wide-eyed and innocent like she hadn’t just thrown some shade on The Dotard. LOL! On another note, I love Sir David’s voice. For a moment, I thought some kind of wildlife was going to show up while he was walking with TQ, and he’d start narrating its behavior.

  4. Oliphant says:

Love everything about this 🙂 plus the queen looks radiant! Love that dress

  5. Neelyo says:

I want to see this buddy film now. Jolie and QEII would just be so cute. I can never get enough of those pics of the two of them.

  6. Maya says:

Two amazing accomplished women working together to save the world.

I will always support people who care about the animals and Mother Nature.

And it’s so good that Angelina just gets on with her life and continues to help as many people as possible. She is also teaching her children that there will be people around the world who doesn’t want you to succeed. They will tear you down with lies, racism and misogyny and use whatever at their disposal to take you down. But you should never listen to those people, never give them the time of the day and just carry own with your own work.

“They will tear you down with lies, racism and misogyny and use whatever at their disposal to take you down. But you should never listen to those people, never give them the time of the day and just carry own with your own work.”
This description fits to a T the current occupant of the White House, it’s really sad.

  7. Peg says:

The Queen asked the the Namibian Government, to get in touch with Angelina.
Sir David Attenborough and Jane Goodall, known Angelina for years.

    • Joy says:

Really? I haven’t seen that, that’s awesome. I remember reports of Angelina and the girls going to see the Namibian President when they flew in. I thought Jane would have been involved somehow. This is such a lovely effort and I cannot wait to watch the documentary, and lovely sense of humour the Queen has. Also just thrilled to see her flying.

  8. Fa says:

The Namibian government asked her to participate on behalf of the Queen.

  9. Zondie says:

The Queen’s dress and pearls are sublime!! And thank goodness these two, who are high profile, are bringing attention to a great cause!

  10. Ophelia says:

So, I’m guessing this is just a Commonwealth thing? Because there’s no mention of Maddox foundation, only Shiloh’s. IMHO Jolie’s conservation charity work in Cambodia is of comparable if not greater in scope than her involvement in Namibia.

Her Maj has quite a way with wit and words.

  11. Tata Mata says:

Jolie got Dame-ed and gong-ed and therefore she praises the Queen who is neither known nor not-known to care about anything other than the continuing existence of a taxpayer-funded Royal Family.

    • Who ARE These People? says:

That may be, but if the effort plants a lot of trees that may long outlive the monarchy, so be it.
