Meghan Markle in Self Portrait & Stella McCartney: stunning or underwhelming?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle arrive at Australia House

Meghan Markle had a big day on Saturday. She and Prince Harry made a daytime appearance at Australia House in London, apparently to discuss Australia hosting this year’s Invictus Games. We already knew that Meghan was going to be involved somehow with the Invictus Games, even if her role is more like “informal ambassador to the Games” or something like that. It feels like her inclusion in this visit was more about Harry wanting to introduce Meghan to every single part of his life, even the boring bureaucratic/diplomatic glad-handing part of it.

For the visit to Australia House, Meghan wore a green crepe de chine dress by Self Portrait. You can see what the dress looks like without the jacket here – honestly, I don’t like the dress on its own. It’s got wide shoulder straps and then fluttery little cap sleeves on top of the boob-ruffle. It’s too fussy for my taste and I see why she wanted to cover the straps and cap sleeves – it’s a much cleaner look when you can’t see that part of the dress. But I probably would have paired the dress with a light cardigan, not this McQueen blazer, which is actually her first “royal repeat.” Still, all in all, this isn’t terrible. She’s not covered in buttons, the skirt length is appropriate and in several photos, you can tell that she’s wearing a slip so there will be no inappropriate flashes if a gust of wind came along. Her shoes are Manolos!

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at Australia House

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle arrive at Australia House

Hours after this appearance, Meghan and Harry attended the Queen’s birthday concert in London, at the Royal Albert Hall. Other royals were in attendance, like the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Princess Royal, the York princesses, the Countess of Wessex, Lady Louise and Prince William (Kate stayed home because she’s due any moment). The Queen was celebrating her 92nd birthday, and she was serenaded by the likes of… Shaggy and Sting. And Tom Jones. And Kylie Minogue. For this evening event, Meghan wore a navy cape dress by Stella McCartney. You guys know how much I loathe Stella’s designs, but I don’t completely hate this. I think the “slits” for the caped sleeves are a bit wonky, and it makes it seem like Meg is wearing a partial straightjacket, but other than that, it’s totally fine. The seating arrangements in the royal balcony/box are very… interesting.

It looks like Markle chose a light summer dress and then saw herself in the mirror and thought: this is too much bare flesh on the shoulders. Then she looked into her wardrobe and grabbed some business jacket to cover up. I don’t like this look. Such a light ruffled summer dress doesn’t deserve to be weighted down with a formal black jacket. Formal both colourwise as well as cut-wise. Some summer cardigan would have been a much better choice.

Honestly it seems like Markle chose to follow this silly advice for young graduates entering professional life. You can find it in all magazines targeted at this group. It usually says that you can wear any summer dress in office as long as you throw a business jacket over it. Markle’s outfit very much proves how silly wrong that advice is. I get it that young professionals don’t have much money and therefor do economize in fashion. Fine. But Markle isn’t a young graduate entering professional life. Nope. That outfit isn’t prove of style but of lack of “the eye” for style and apparently no concept.

i’m regularly unimpressed by Meghan’s sartorial choices, but this green dress and the black halo one are both wins in my book.
Thankfully she wore a blazer over the self portrait dress, which as you said was for too garden party for the occasion. Though with her resources (quite extensive even though not duchess level yet), she shouldn’t be choosing dresses that NEED a blazer in order to be occasion appropriate. It’s not that hard. Letizia kills it nearly every single time, and i really wish Kate and Meghan would look to her for inspiration for outfits that are fun whilst professional and stylish without veering into fashionista territory.
The cape is just meh, i can see where she’s going with it, but it’s like something you’d wear to attend Karl Lagerfeld’s funeral. Sombre but high fashion.
Given that this was a fun event to celebrate the Queen’s bday, it just didn’t suit the light hearted mood of the occasion. Sophie on the other hand was wearing a saucy jumpsuit and looked fabulous.

      • PrincessK says:

If Meghan had worn something fancier or light hearted people would say that she was drawing attention away from the Queen.

      • RoyalSparkle says:

        *1000
Both attire are done well- a regal Win Win!

Princess Henry i/w evenng do was also very regal chic like Countess. The public affection/ Tour seem to be over – more serious Royal appearances (and the Rover photo between both Princes)

Lets have more similar appearances (to Qn Leticia and SRF Sofia). Someone may have read blogs comments- Kudos!!

    • minx says:

She probably threw the blazer over it to hide those ugly bitty ruffles and cheesy netting.

    • Sara says:

LMFAO jesus are you 70 years old?

      • Carmen says:

Don’t be knocking the old folks. I’m over 70 and I think she looks lovely.

      • Tessy says:

Well I’m not over 70 not that its relevant and I don’t think that dress looks quite right with a dark jacket either. But that cape dress is just weird, it looks like a blanket over top of a hospital gown.

      • CairinaCat says:

Lupita nyong’o had such cape dress, too, hers was red. Meghan copycat.

    • Imqrious2 says:

I love the green dress; it has a very “Spring” feel, and the green is gorgeous on her. The jacket does seem a bit heavy for the dress. Perhaps a less “formal” blazer, or even a cropped cardigan would’ve looked nicer, but I think she looks lovely.

I really dislike the cape dress. IMO the slit sleeves make it look like she’s overwhelmed in fabric again. And while the clutch is gorgeous, the blue suede shoes clash. This evening look is not a “win” for me.

On an unrelated note, I was very surprised to see how big Louise has gotten, and Sophie showing such deep cleavage with the Queen present. I thought that was a no-no.

      • Spicecake38 says:

Green is my favorite color and I think Meghan is wearing her outfit instead of it wearing her Win in my book!

      • Rachel in August says:

I love it as well, it’s perfect and looks gorgeous on her, with her colouring. It’s a win in my books.

    • BearcatLawyer says:

Blue and green are colours traditionally associated with Australia. I thought her outfit was appropriate yet fun.

    • WHHHAAaaaattttt?? says:

Agree! The green dress on its own I am not a fan of at all because of the sleeves and ruffles. Although the blazer is heavy for it, at least it covers that part. Also, if I was meeting a PM, I would never choose any dress with sheer panels, even if they are modest. I wouldn’t even feel comfortable wearing it to work and we dress casual.

I think the comment about the balcony seating is funny. Based on this site and Harry and Meghan’s PR, you would think Meghan is the best thing to have ever happened to the royal family and that she is already the favorite – so how could they possibly seat her on the end of immediate family vs right next to the queen. 😉

    • Moien Ahamd says:

She is looking fine, isn’t it?

  2. Lainey says:

Its not her first re-wear. She’s had something at nearly every engagement that she either had before the engagement or worn since. Her Victoria Beckham jumper from the engagement photos was re-worn in Northern Ireland, the black top she worn on her first engagement, she re-wore in Scotland. The shoes she wore to the concert she wore to the Commonwealth church service. She re-wore items she owned before the engagement to the others.
Love the Stella McCartney and even more so that clutch! Its stunning. Agree on the green dress. Dont like the sleeves, glad she wore it with something covering them. Would have gone with a white blazer/cardigan though.

    • PrincessK says:

I agree a white blazer would probably have looked better but maybe she hasn’t got one …lol! 😀

      • DesertReal says:

I’m sure she has (subtext can afford) one, princessk.
However, a black blazer pairs best with the Manolos.

  3. PrincessK says:

A double dose of Meghan in one day! What a treat.

Well I thought she looked great in both dresses, very nice shoes too. I also noticed that she was wearing the same black jacket which was part of the fabulous black suit she wore to the Endurance awards.

    • Hazel says:

I thought she looked great both times, too, particularly after following links on that green dress! It looked much better covered up & that McQueen blazer is a lightweight acetate blend, so it seemed looking like a good match to me. Both pairs of Manolos are gorgeous. As for the Stella dress, Meghan looked great in it, I just know for myself I could never wear it, it would feel too much like a straight jacket. I like clothes that feel good as well as look good.

  4. Shelley says:

Like both outfits except for the shoes- they are not bad, just run of the mill.

  5. whatever says:

The first outfit is such a Kate outfit. I’m sure Kate would wear that green dress and those shoes in a heartbeat!. The only thing that makes it different is the pretty chain on the bag. And at least this time, she’s is wearing the blazer properly and not draped over the shoulders, if only to cover up those hideous arm ruffles.

The second outfit is pretty boring except for that gold clutch.

    • manta says:

Would she? The series of tiny holes under the chest show skin (very modestly). The cut out or fishnet clothes don’t seem to be her thing ( from my very superficial browsing on the site).

      • imqrious2 says:

Kate’s worn a few “peek-a-boo” fabrics, most notably that gorgeous green teal Jenny Packman gown, which IMO was one her most fabulous looks head to toe.

      • whatever says:

        @imqrious2

That teal Jenny Packman gown really was stunning!! The shoes and hair were fab too. I stumbled upon a picture yesterday of her wearing that ensemble and it took my breath away all over again.

      • Luna says:

A black full slip might have made the netting practically invisible. Better for daytime. Really, I never expect see -thru netting anytime for mm’s public life.

    • Milla says:

I don’t see sp dress as something Kate would wear. It is much more modern… And that look is fine with me.

Stella’s dress… Well it is not bad, but the shoes…wrong fabric. Just classic leather in that shade would make the outfit. Cape dresses are kind of out, but it was a safe option.

Clearly, she needs a stylist who’s more confident. I actually like the sp dress with that bag, it’s such a sweet combo and the color is perfect for her.

    • whatever says:

I was thinking more along the lines of the print and the ruffles.

      • Redgrl says:

I thought the same thing. It’s a Kate dress. Don’t like all the fussy details either. The cape dress is kind of cool.

    • Charlie Canada says:

My first thought too — it’s a Kate dress. I like the entire outfit, even if the jacket is a tad heavy for spring. I like the dress without the jacket too — I love ruffles. I don’t know why everyone is having such a fit about nearly invisible “see through” panels. When I first read that, I thought there would be a boob-to-waist see through/sheer panel. You can’t see anything with that 1/4-inch-wide lace in a couple of places. People are all upset over nothing. It’s a very pretty dress, her best yet.

On the other hand, I loathe that Halo dress she wore the other night. I’ve seen it at least ten times before on other celebs and TV presenters, in a rainbow of colours. My sister wore it to her wedding in cream colour in 2010. Another designer (Roland Mouret?) did it long ago — the dress is at least ten years old. Why doesn’t it go away?

  6. Snappyfish says:

I like the dress w/the jacket as styled. I think she looks quite pretty. Hate the dress with out a jacket/sweater

    • Anners says:

Agreed! Love the green look (and the shoes), but don’t like the dress on its own. The cape dress is weird (not a McCartney fan tbh), but Meghan looks gorgeous. I’m constantly blown away by how photogenic and luminous she is, especially when smiling.

  7. klutzy_girl says:

Enjoy this video of Harry trying to get Meghan’s attention and calling her Meg:

    http://lovingtheroyals.tumblr.com/post/173158136271/prince-harry-gets-his-fianc%C3%A9-meghan-markles

    I really like both outfits!

    • PrincessK says:

Thanks for sharing that lovely video. I did enjoy it.

      • Birdy says:

She just walked away from who she was speaking to without a backwards glance or apology simply because h said come on. Whilst it may have been organisers or staffers, it is still rude to simply walk off.

      • Olenna says:

Rude? So, now we have another character flaw to add to the ever increasing list of flaws and inadequacies Meghan has been assigned by people who don’t know her personally. I’d love to see how some of the people who want to find fault in her would react in the same moment, being pulled in two different directions in a new, and maybe stressful situation.

    • Natalie S says:

Aww, poor Meg, she seems nervous.

    • Lila says:

That’s stinking adorable, thanks for sharing.

    • Sharon Lea says:

      Cute clip!

    • stinky says:

aw.. everybody want a piece of Meg.. that was cute!
my interpretation was Harry saw her getting lured off w/ the women and needed to get his introductions in.

    • Alexandria says:

Aw man she’s so pretty and makes him look cute hahaha

    • Sage says:

She looked confused. Harry is tying to get her attention but the assistant is guiding her elsewhere. They need better coordination.

      • Honey says:

Yes, they definitely need to coordinate stuff like this and to do as much advance planning as possible. While watching them work thiings like this is blooper-like funny, especially as Meghan belatedly realizes that Harry IS the bouncing ball that she has to keep her eyes on rather than getting caught up into something or someone else, I hope these types of miscues (if it is a miscue) won’t lead to frustration on his part. Sometimes it’s the little things that grind down a relationship.

    • Keepitreal says:

How cute! They really seem to have great chemistry. She did look a little robotic at this event, maybe she was just exhausted from the smiling over the past few days. The assistant was leading her over to another group of people, so it was not her fault. I think these two will be just fine.

  8. KLO says:

I like all of her looks recently.

  9. RBC says:

I must be missing something. Why is the seating arrangement in the royal balcony “interesting”?

    • Runcmc says:

I think usually by rank Harry would be closer to HM (usually next to his brother). But the york princesses are sat right next to her and there’s other people in the front row, and Harry/Meghan are a row back and a few people over.

We’re probably all overthinking it but I think it’s interesting too. Was this a snub? Did everyone just sit as they arrived? Who knows.

      • cee says:

HM is flanked by the Heirs – Charles on one side (with Camilla by her side) and William on the other side. This is a status symbol. She chose to have her only daughter and son in law in the same row.

The York Princesses are seated behind Charles while Harry and Meghan are seated in the same row, on the other side.

I don’t see a snub here, none at all.

      • PrincessK says:

I can assure you that they did not sit as they arrived, everything to do with the royals is pre planned months in advance, with military precision.

      • PrincessK says:

Of course there was no snub, Harry had a big role to play he actually went on stage and delivered a speech.

    • C-Shell says:

I’ve probably spent WAY too much time looking at the photo of the royal box, but I don’t see anything that “interesting.” The front row is HM, her children and their spouses. William is standing just behind that rank, but he’s next in line for the throne after PC, so if he’s special, I can understand that. The grandchildren all seem to be standing on the same row behind. Sophie is on that row and Wessex is in the last row. A little random. And who knows where William wound up during the event. Anyway, I don’t see a snub.

    • MissMarierose says:

Maybe because Edward is so far away from Sophie and Louise?

      • KiddV says:

That’s what I thought was odd, why is Edward so far away? I thought he was the favorite. He’s so far away he’s not even mentioned in a lot of the photos.

      • Ollie says:

Seems there were not enough seats which is unusual for such occasions…
It looks like Edward gave his seat to his daughter and moved to the back.

      • notasugarhere says:

Edward is Philip’s favorite, but HM’s favorite is Andrew.

      • imqrious2 says:

Actually, Andrew is her favorite, and I didn’t see him there.

      • notasugarhere says:

In wider shots you can see Andrew next to Camilla.

      • Nic919 says:

He isn’t in the picture above, but I saw elsewhere that he was sitting on the other side of Camilla.

    • Beluga says:

I think it may just be the angle of the photograph making H+M look further away from Her Maj? Plus Edward’s way off in the corner.

      Front row (L-R):
      Camilla – Charles – TQ – William – Anne – Tim Laurence (Anne’s husband)

      2nd row (L-R):
      James Brooksbank (Eugenie’s fiance) – Eugenie – Beatrice — Louise – Sophie — Harry – Meghan

      3rd row (L-R):
Autumn Phillips – Peter Phillips —- Edward

So the Queen has her direct heirs either side, then her daughter a space away with Charles and Anne’s spouses in the next outer spaces in the front row.

Then it’s other grandchildren + Sophie on the 2nd row, again with future spouses in the next outside space from their partners. Edward is the only one obviously out of place there.

      • Honey says:

Andrew was there too I believe. On a side note, once again, it seems to me that QEII as more relaxed and has been enjoying herself immensely since Phil has retired—-almost like she’s caught a second wind. Just out kicking it and enjoying life.

    • notasugarhere says:

IMO nothing to see here. They moved around at one point and Edward was closer to Louise and Sophie. Harry had to leave part-way through to make a speech. Easier to sneak out for that if you’re close to the door.

    • Hazel says:

The only thing I thought odd was that Sophie & Louise were behind the Queen while Edward was across the aisle in a corner by himself. I did notice TQ was enjoying a cocktail while most others in the royal box were already seated. It’s good to be queen!👸👑

  10. Guest says:

I think both outfits look great. I love Cape dresses. I don’t understand the sitting arrangement. I don’t see anything wrong. It gave the crazies on Twitter and tumblr ammo (“see the queen hates her!!!”) but nothing else I saw.

  11. pattieboyd says:

I hope Stella McCartney isn’t the wedding dress designer.
Even Meghan couldn’t make this outfit look good.

  12. Citresse says:

The green outfit is something worn on long haul flights, “easy care, easy wear” as the late Kanga said. It’s not a terrible look for meetings. Especially when worn with a blazer and shoes which fit. But speaking of shoes, I see MM is taking a cue from Kate with regard to mixing shades of blue with regard to the blue caped outfit. I like the style of the caped outfit but the shoes going a different shade of blue long admired by Kate doesn’t work. Better to go black shoes and the court shoe style are conservative enough for me to believe MM’s style is being stifled by BP courtiers. MM will put up with it for now. But remember, she’s feisty. Long term, it’s hard to say what could happen. It’s not an easy life living with numerous pressures from various sources in the royal goldfish bowl.
Blue was a central theme among many of the royals at HM’s birthday, wonder why? Perhaps just coincidence???

    • MrsBump says:

If BP was intent on stifling her style, they would have done something about that horrid stripey dress we saw at the beginning of the week. She should not have been allowed to step out wearing that monstrosity 😉
Personally i think her dress choices are down to her stylist not really understanding the difference between dressing a royal and dressing a celebrity.

      • Citresse says:

There may have been an advisement sent regarding dress code for HM’s birthday. HM wore gold. She didn’t want to be upstaged by flashy colours worn by others. The entire Wessex family also wore conservative blue in addition to William, MM and Harry.

    • So Cal says:

Princesses Anne, Beatrice, and Eugenie didn’t wear navy, and neither did Camilla.

      • Citresse says:

Yes I saw Camilla’s outfit. I liked the berry colour. The Yorkies look were muted. HM was the focus.

      • notasugarhere says:

The berry is good, the flounces/ruffles are not. Camilla is better in streamlined styles.

  13. minx says:

The cape dress is a rich flattering color on her. Agree that the slits seem a tad wonky, but she looks elegant.

  14. Merritt says:

The jacket looks odd with the green dress, a cardigan or shrug would have looked better. I like the cape dress a lot.

  15. homeslice says:

The green dress is fine. I like the color on her. The Stella is awful.

I never read the comments on the Fail, but last night I did about the concert seating. Wow, there are some rotten to core people in this world 🙁

  16. violet says:

So far, the Black Halo outfit is the only real win in my book. The frilly green summer dress could work at a backyard barbecue that she tried to dress up with pumps (she could easily have worn wedgies or sandals with it) and again a blazer way too heavy and structured for the dress itself in an attempt to “professionalize it.

The McCartney is problematic to me. It looks like an envelope, and she looks nice enough but it’s also just too much cloth for her small frame. I wish she’d get over the, “the more cloth the better” thing. If it had been a straight up sheath with the blue pumps, and perhaps a beautiful silk shawl or bolero jacket, but with the cape design . . . it’s, ah, just too much blue on a small girl. And I say this as someone whose favorite color is almost any shade of blue. And, I hate the little brown purse with the blue. I’d have gone with a black evening clutch.

Underwhelming, definitely. And I loved the LBD ensemble so much I hoped she was moving on from lots of cloth and heavy blazers with summer wear . . .

I think Meghan is still experimenting and trying to work out what works and what doesn’t with her frame + royal life. Which is perfectly okay.

  17. Char says:

I love the red jumpsuit on the lady next to Meghan. She looks fabulous yet relaxed.

  18. Pixie says:

    No story on Avicii?

    • stinky says:

      it was posted Friday.

      • Bethany F says:

@Stinky link please? it was discussed in the comments of Friday’s links post but i don’t see any story about it, even the link post doesn’t mention it, it was brought up in the comments

  19. Ankhel says:

I love the green outfit. Young and pretty, but styled formally. The blue McCartney is close (aren’t they usually?) but would have looked better with different shoes.

    • Suze says:

Not sure how old you are. But young for that dress?? No “young” women under 30 would be caught dead in that dress. For the older generation for sure

      • Oro says:

Yup, it’s an older style. I can’t help but think Kate would be called matronly if she wore a dress like this.

  20. Cher says:

Thank God Meghan wore a jacket over the summer dress. The dress without the jacket is horrible.
The cape dress is nice, the color on Meghan is beautiful.

  21. Rumi says:

I love the Navy cape dress but not the printed one. Charles let his mask slip when remarking a brown woman didn’t look like she’s from Manchester. Harry will have to absolutely have Meghan’s back. The Commonwealth message of accepting diversity and Coming together is all bull, the monarchy made their wealth by taking from these countries. Charles, like father like son.

  22. TheOriginalMia says:

I loved both dresses. I agree she should have worn a cardigan with the green, but the jacket wasn’t a bad choice. I didn’t like the suede with the Stella, but minor quibble.

As for the seating arrangements, Harry is president of the newly formed Queen’s Commonwealth Foundation. He gave the speech to open the concert and introduced the first act. Wouldn’t make sense to have him seated inside or on the same row as William because he would have had to get up and walk past him and everyone else.

  23. aerohead21 says:

I like her green dress look, even with the blazer. The navy cape dress is…not my favorite look but it’s better than that striped dress she wore the other day. I do like how they’re matching their looks 🙂 so cute for a new couple.

  24. Starryfish says:

I liked both, though I wish she’d paired the cape dress with a gunmetal shoe or something with more interest. Or perhaps just some interesting earrings, I can’t wait to see her start wearing some more substantial jewelry.

    • Sunny says:

I agree. I like the clean lines of the cape dress but the blue shoes were not a good choice. Gunmetal shoes to match the metallic look of the bag would have been a better look.
As for the green dress—-oy! It looks much better covered up, those sleeves and ruffles are hiddy. Unfortunately, wearing that style of jacket on top looks like an afterthought. A softer cardigan or shrug would look too casual/messy, IMO. The look was ok, but I think she could have done much better.

  25. Seraphina says:

Love the green dress but not with the jacket. And that blue dress is aweful. But we can’t have homeruns. All very appropriate and she looks so HAPPY.

  26. Jayna says:

I love the green dress paired with the blazer on her. It’s one of her best outfits yet. She looks lovely.

The Stella McCartney cape dress is like most Stella McCartney designs, meh, underwhelming, on and on. But having said that, it’s fine for the occasion.

  27. crazydaisy says:

Her ankles and calves are so tiny! Half the size of mine…I can’t imagine.

    • Natters says:

She needs better shoes to take away the attention of her skinny calves and ankles.

      • notasugarhere says:

Because having naturally tiny bone structure is a bad thing?

      • Argonaut says:

why? having skinny calves and ankles is not a bad thing. i think they’re beautiful. i wish i had tiny bone structure like her!

      • Taxi says:

Tiny bones with stilettos make her look too fragile. A lower heel shoe would give a more proportional look than chihuahua on stilts.

      • Oro says:

They’re not naturally tiny. If you look back at her past photos, her legs are fine. Its when she started to lose weight, thats when her calves and ankles became too skinny. She has lost a lot of weight.

  28. KiddV says:

My first thought was she was shopping in Kate’s closet. The dress looks much better covered up. That’s a great designer slogan “Looks better covered up”. LOL

I don’t mind the second dress, but it’s not great.

    • minx says:

That’s a great designer slogan “Looks better covered up”
      ————————
      😂😂😂

      • Elaine says:

LOL! Agree! Ringing endorsement / subtle shade: “Yeah, that looks better unworn. By anyone.” 😉

Loving this set of outfits! Usually hate capes. But on Megs, its fab!

  29. Joannie says:

She’s no fashionista in my books. Nor is she supposed to be. I liked the tux on her and thats pretty much it. She always appears somewhat intimidated and out of her comfort zone to me. I probably would be too!

    • Peg says:

Every time you see Meghan you claimed she looks intimidated, what pictures are you looking at? That no one else is seeing.
If she was out of her comfort zone, she would not peel off on her own, when they’re greeting people on the walkabouts.
Was she not off talking to people yesterday, when Harry had to tap her on her back, to get her attention to meet other people. And it’s not the first time he has interrupted her, to call her attention (bringing the schoolgirl out of the crowd to meet Meghan) to someone or something.
Meeting strangers is out of anyone’s comfort zone, ask Kate it took her almost ten years, plus the waiting years.

      • Joannie says:

Every time? You mean like yesterday and today? Gee I didn’t know I wasn’t allowed to have an opinion. Apologies! Ugh.

  30. Lady D says:

Can anyone ID the couple standing behind the York princesses?

    • Ollie says:

Peter Phillips (Princess Anne’s son) and his wife Autumn

    • TheOriginalMia says:

      Summer & Peter

    • happy girl says:

      @Lady D

Princess Anne’s son Peter Phillips and his wife Autumn are standing behind the York princesses.

      • Lady D says:

Thank you @happy girl, and in my defense your comment wasn’t up when I posted the one below. As it turns out Autumn is Canadian!

    • Lady D says:

LOL you guys. Do I hear Spring? Seriously though, thanks for telling me. I can google from here.

      • happy girl says:

        So cute @Lady D 🙂

We all posted at the same time…I guess my post had a delay.

Yes, Autumn is Canadian. I think Canada being a major part of the Commonwealth is why there really wasn’t a negative peep about Peter marrying a non-British girl.

And, let’s face it, while no fault of hers whatsoever, being an American with the Orange Dumpster Fire in the White House right now is not a badge of honor.

    • notasugarhere says:

I admit, I envy Autumn’s bone structure. And their two girls *might* escape the Windsor curse thanks to the Kelly genes.

  31. Dr. Mrs. The Monarch says:

I think some of the disconnect with MM and her wardrobe choices has to do with her involvement in the entertainment industry. On TV, hosts are expected to wear the NEXT season’s fashions. So someone like Jessica Mulroney would give her advice to wear a trendy summer dress despite the actual temperature. She would need to throw on a coat to make it look more formal/office appropriate.

I would not have chosen a dress with fishnet cutouts to wear to any office meeting, even if I could cover it up with a coat. MM is going to have to develop her own style and avoid the trendy, fashion-forward stuff.

I like how MM and Harry were in matching outfits for the Queen’s party though. They really go well together.

    • Natters says:

I like the dress but I agree with you, Meghan needs to stop taking advice from her friend Jessica Mulroney as Jessica’s choices are too trendy. She doesn’t need to be boring but Meghan needs to have a more classic and timeless style. She has enough hurdles to overcome with being an mixed-race American not of wealthy means. Make life easy Meghan and develop your own style.

    • ASHBY says:

@ Dr. Mrs. The Monarch :

      I could not agree more.

MM is no longer in the entertainment industry, so trendy is not what she should be going for.

No RF member should be a Style Icon that is not their responsibility, we have actors/models for that.

It would be good, if the RF members would showcase commonwealth designers for the obvious reasons, but none of RF members should be fashionistas.

They all need to dress in classy, timeless, appropriate to the occasion, well made pieces that are of high quality fabrics and tailored properly.

Pants dragging on the ground to make appear MM taller are unacceptable.

Hemming pants is not rocket science.

I like both outfits, the green dress on it’s own looks too fussy, the blazer doesn’t look heavy to me, at least from the pics, maybe it’s crepe.

I like MM ‘s style for the most part, minus that strippy/buttony mess and the too long pants.

She is very photogenic, I adore her skin tone and the quality of her skin.

Great genes, very clean eating, lots of plain water, hot yoga, plenty of sleep and a lot of focus on excellent organic skin care means that not much make up is needed to cover up flaws.

She probably doesn’t drink much alcohol and most likely doesn’t smoke either.

  32. Betsy says:

That green dress and outfit are ghastly.

The Stella McCartney dress is acceptable but the slits are a smidge to close together which lends the appearance of her arms being misplaced. I like that dress though.

  33. Natters says:

Stunning or underwhelming? Poor Meghan. Sounds like the rest of her life will be “Damned if I do, damned if I don’t.

  34. Natters says:

  35. Egla says:

All in all she looks appropriate in general. Sure some of the clothes are not great but it’s ok. She seems to understand some of the rules of dressing and is doing ok as far as I can tell. (remember Kate in her first years). Her dresses are below knees and on the safe side and I have seen photos of her with mini dresses before so she is adapting quickly. She glows though all the time and he looks so in love and happy and relaxed. In that video of calling her he looked like a little puppy (no offense)=adorable.

As for the seating arrangement whatever they might think of her or hoped for Harry they will not show it by putting them where they do not belong. It’s a done deal. She is part of the family now. Protocol will be followed. And I think some of them are more tone deaf than racist per se. I must admit though I am fascinated at the ease this relationship was accepted. Sure, we don’t know what went behind closed doors but from the looks of it whatever happened she was told only the good part as she seems respectful and sincerely smiling when she is with the family. I for one am full of hopes this marriage lasts for the both of them. I have never seen him so engaged and happy and she is happy to.

  36. happy girl says:

The heavy jacket/blazer over a floaty summer dress is just wrong. Everyone who said a thin cardigan would be perfect is dead on.

She needs to add those dreamy, silk/cashmere Prada cardigans (in every color) to her wardrobe. She can afford it and they are perfect over anything, formal or casual.

I hadn’t seen the dress without the jacket. Don’t like the straps/cold-shoulder thing at all. Yuck.

The blue Stella is just okay, imo. other than the Gucci clutch the other day, her handbag game is absolute garbage.

    • Aurelia says:

I was really into the green dress … until I saw the photo in its entirety. Yuck is right. Nasty cold shoulder style and fishnet slits.

  37. minxx says:

I like both choices. She looks pretty, feminine yet modern. I like her style much more than Kate’s.

  38. ValiantlyVarnished says:

She looks fab in both dresses. LOVE the cape dress. It was perfect for the occasion.

  39. Rapunzel says:

Re: Meg’s black blazer, I read it’s crepe, which isn’t that heavy. It’s fine with the dress. I swear the fashion pick aparts re: Meg and Kate are so overboard.

    • Jayna says:

Many people pair a leather jacket with a light, girly dress. The contrast is what makes the look work.

I don’t see the problem with the blazer and it not being “light” enough. I loved the look on her.

  40. Eileen says:

Meaghan could wear a gunny sack and still look better than I did in my prime! She is so photogenic. I like both outfits here.

  41. liriel says:

I think she looks nice but I’m really unimpressed. I really thought she’d be more fun to watch and sorry to say – she’s rather boring and doesn’t get the headlines. At least I hope she’ll do some work.

    • notasugarhere says:

Royals aren’t supposed to be in the headlines constantly. That is a negative holdover from The Diana Show IMO. They’re supposed to show up, a lot, to the local engagements, and just get on with working.

  42. Tila says:

She has such skinny ankles and calves. Whenever she wears anything bulky on top, she looks like she’s going to topple over.

    • Peg says:

It’s like beating a dead horse, her legs and ankles are skinny, there is nothing she can do about it. They have been carrying her around for almost 37 years.
If/when she is pregnant, now that will be a sight to see, because all the weight will be in her boobs and mid-section, her limbs will not change.

  43. Amelie says:

I would really love the green dress if it didn’t have the cold shoulder, the ruffles, and the slits (even though the dress is lined, Self Portrait’s website confirms that). If it was just a skirt it would be great too. So I don’t love that outfit, it’s just okay. The blazer over it doesn’t look terrible but not the best choice.

As for the Stella McCartney cape dress, it’s okay too. I myself would never wear a cape dress as I don’t like the aesthetic but she does look elegant and chic. And I love that little constellation handbag she is carrying.

  44. GeorgetteBSmith says:

Forget Meghan, what about Lucy T in that red jumpsuit?! Dream girl

  45. ... nik. says:

Olivia Pope cape. M. Looks great in everything.

  46. Keepitreal says:

Loved both looks! She is not chocolate box pretty, but she is extremely photogenic and that is more important. She needs to work on getting some leather lower heel shoes for spring and summer….but she will ease into it. I think the green dress was lovely even without the jacket; she could have gotten away with the trap and sleeves because of her small shoulders, arms and bust. Well done, Megs!

  47. Anastasia says:

    Lady Louise is so pretty!

  48. Danielle says:

I really like both outfits. Not boring at all!

  49. ladida says:

She always looks great! But Harry should not have called her over that rudely during the event. I’ve maintained for a while that he doesn’t treat her super well.
