Jane Fonda on when to let a guy meet your kids: not less than a month, more like 3-4

Book Club is out next weekend and if that movie gets anything over 60% on Rotten Tomatoes I’m going to see it with my mom. It’s starring Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Diane Keaton and Mary Steenburgen as a book club which reads 50 Shades of Grey and is forever changed by it. It’s a dumb premise but we need more movies with women leads and especially with older women and I’m going to support it. As part of the promotion for the film, the cast are of course talking about sex and dating as that’s key to the plot. They’ve given some great interviews and I wanted to talk about a few of them. I’m first going to quote a brief video interview that Mary, Candice and Jane did with EW where they’re asked for dating advice as that’s so fun. Watch it if you get a chance. Then there’s a quote from Jane that Dlisted covered which was just so blunt.

EW: What’s the best place to go on a first date?
MS: For a walk
CB: Restaurant, but it has to be a special restaurant
JF: The lighting has to be good

EW: What is your drink of choice on a first date?
JF: Vodka martini straight up with an olive
CB: Moscow Mule
MS: Really good tequila on the rocks

EW: How soon should you meet the parents and/or kids
JF: Not less than a month but probably more like 3 or 4

EW: How many dates should you go on before you call it off?
JF: One hour, you know

Jane Fonda, to Extra on sex and dating
I’m not dating anymore but I did up until a couple of years ago. I’m 80. I’ve closed up shop down there.

Jane Fonda, to People on sex and dating
I think it’s very individual. Some people have closed up shop down there, and for others the sex only gets better.

[From EW, Extra and People]

After that EW first dates video they did a “real” or “fake” quiz with lines and plot details from the 50 Shades books. Their success rate was about 50% and it was hilarious. They talked about so many fun things! My best friend is dating and she gave me the “go for a walk” advice for first dates too. I agree with that as you’re busy doing something and you’re not as self conscious as when you’re sitting across from the person. The conversation flows better too. As for a drink on a first date I don’t drink anymore but I used to get one or two white wine spritzers so I didn’t get blitzed. I’ve been on dates where the guy gets wasted and I never wanted to be that person. For meeting kids and family I would say to wait 5-6 months to be sure. One month seems way too early for me.

In terms of sex as a senior lady, I hope I’m still getting some! Jane said she’s not, but she suggested that it depends on the situation. If you’re with someone you’re hot for you can be getting busy throughout retirement. Maybe I’ll feel differently after menopause though.

Here are photos from the Book Club premiere! Random thoughts: Alicia Silverstone is in it. Where can I get Candice Bergen’s sweater? Also, Diane Keaton’s schtick is getting old. I think I just dislike her because of her connection to Woody Allen. Plus I read her biography for CB Book Club (we used to have one!) and it was haphazardly written and hard to get through.

5-6 months seems like way too soon. Imagine how many boyfriends and “new daddies” you could cycle through if you introduce so soon.

It depends on whether the kids are actually kids. Most experts say for children, wait a year and know that it’s serious before getting the kids involved at all. My soon-to-be bonus kid was ready for me to marry her father day 1. Children can get really attached, so it’s better to figure out where the relationship is going before mixing kids into the situation.

For adult children, do whatever you want.

Waiting a year especially for young kids seems like a good rule of thumb. So sad the amount of stories concerning boyfriends abusing/assaulting kids because they gained access way too early.

Solid advice here! My stepkids’ age range was 15-20 when we met and we waited around 8 months. So awesome to hear you and your step-kiddo have such a great relationship and congratulations on your upcoming wedding!! ❤️❤️

In child development psychology it’s a year make sure the relationship is stable and committed a year hello

JAYSUS…whoever styles Jane…she is ALWAYS ON POINT…from head to toe!!! I would rock the HECK out of her WHOLE ENSEMBLE!!!! I sent her quote to my Mama regarding her…”I’m 80 I closed up shop down there…” My Mama was like…AWWW HEYLL NAW!!! Diane is now….unsavory to me…with the way she handled the whole Woody thing…and I used to really adore her…Mary Steenburgen was adorable when I first saw her more than 30 years ago…and not a THANG has changed! Candice is a HOOT AND A HOLLER!!! No more…”icy blonde” persona for her!

Diane Keaton looks like a bag lady. No offense to bag ladies.
Love Mary Steenburgen, she’s always good and is a hoot on Last Man on Earth.

I want to go for drinks with Candace and Jane, daughters of old Hollywood who have lived fascinating lives of their own making, both fought through “sex kitten” stereotyping to portray strong three-dimensional women, both outspoken and fearless. They must be a hoot to hang out with.

    • MissMarierose says:

Same here. Can you just imagine the stories they would have to tell?!

      • smcollins says:

Exactly what I was thinking. I would just sit in awe listening to their stories, and I’m sure having some great laughs as well. All of them seem like very fascinating women.

  6. tracking says:

I can totally see Jane Fonda walking into a restaurant, deeming the light “not good” and walking out. These ladies can pound a drink or three, I’m guessing from their selections.

  7. Astrid says:

    Wow, Jane seems really cool

  8. Sirius says:

Jane Fonda has the best plastic surgery in Hollywood: she looks fantastic. Mary Steenbergen has some of the worst: she doesn’t even look like herself anymore and has lost some of her unique features, it’s a shame.

    • tealily says:

Yeah, poor Mary Steenburgen. She looks great in these still photos, I think, but her face just looks so strange in motion.

  9. tealily says:

LOVE that suit! I would never have thought of a blouse that style with a suit, but it’s gorgeous.

  10. Renee says:

Jane is rockin’ her 80 years. She has always looked incredible.

I’m out on Diane too. She’s proven her loyalty to Woody too many times.

Love Jane Fonda & enjoy her show!
