Michael Jackson’s funeral set for Tuesday, tickets might be sold to defer costs

Michael Jackson’s funeral will not take place at his former estate, Neverland Ranch, nor will he be buried there. The latest news has a public funeral taking place on Tuesday, most likely at the Staples Center in LA. Jackson’s body will possibly be interred at Forest Lawn cemetery in the Hollywood Hills. The owners of Neverland Ranch, the real estate investment firm Colony Capital, were unable to get an exemption fast enough to allow a burial on site.

While several outlets report the Staples Center as a possible venue, Radar Online claims to have confirmed that the funeral will take place there on Tuesday. The LA Times gives a little more information, including the fact that tickets to the memorial might be sold in order to defer the cost of security:

The discussions over Michael Jackson’s public memorial have now focused on a possible Tuesday service, though sources stress that the Jackson family has not made a final decision.

Five sources, who are familiar with the planning process but spoke on the condition that they not be named, said authorities are drawing up plans for a massive law enforcement deployment Tuesday morning.

But Ken Sunshine, a Jackson family spokesman, said in an e-mail that he could not comment.

The site of the memorial service has been the subject of nearly a week of speculation, and possible sites have included the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Neverland Ranch.

The financing for the memorial remains unclear. Security and crowd control for the event are likely to be costly. The Lakers championship victory parade and celebration at the Coliseum cost $2 million, about half of which covered L.A. police and public works costs. There was an outcry when the city initially said it would cover some of those costs — and private donors eventually stepped forward, among them AEG, which owns Staples. AEG was also planning Jackson’s comeback tour at its O2 Arena in London.

It’s also unclear how much tickets to the memorial would cost.

The Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus has long been scheduled to appear at Staples next Wednesday through Sunday, July 12. Traditionally, the Parade of the Elephants — in which the circus’ elephants walk, trunk to tail, through downtown to Staples — is held as circus performers arrive in town.

This year, that parade was scheduled for Tuesday morning — followed by a visit by local elementary school children who were to aid in the animals’ feeding. One source familiar with the planning process said that the parade would continue but that the schoolchildren would have to wait.

It’s fitting that the memorial will be held at the place Michael had his last rehearsal. We’ve heard from several sources, including his trainer Lou Ferrigno and the photographer who captured some of his last rehearsals, that Jackson seemed fit, happy and ready to perform. This is in stark contrast to the media’s perhaps more accurate portrait of a troubled, underweight man with chronic health problems and a dangerous addiction which led to his death. His fans will remember him in all his glory, and imaging the heights to which he could have soared if the drugs hadn’t taken his life.

People should be able to pay their respects to Michael at his final resting place. Rumor has it that he will be buried at Forest Lawn cemetery in the Hollywood Hills, which is open to the public. (There’s another Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale which is private.) Other late greats buried at Forest Lawn in the Hollywood Hills include John Ritter, Bette Davis, Gene Autry and Ozzie and Harriett Nelson. I would have preferred to see a memorial for Michael at Hollywood Forever on Santa Monica Boulevard. It’s set up like a large park and includes statue-like memorials, kiosks with videos and photos searchable by name, and an online guestbook for people to leave condolences. Any cemetery will all those services might be overwhelmed with visitors and website hits for Michael, though, and it’s probably for the best that he be interred in a more traditional cemetery.

Tickets??! I live in Los Angeles and planned on attending but if I have to pay to see and pay my respects then fuck it.

  2. geronimo says:

If they had any respect for him at all, it would be a private ceremony for just his real family and friends, and not another money-making opportunity for his greedy apology-of-a-father or the multitude of hangers-on the poor guy wound up depending on for the last 10 or so years of his life. Sad.

  3. DD says:

agree geronimo, selling tickets for a funeral as if it’s a concert is pretty tasteless.

  4. someone says:

I bet Joe Jackson had something to do with “tickets”. You mean there isn’t enough money to pay for security???Anything for a buck.

  5. MM says:

Tickets for the funeral, how sick!!! Michael’s family/ father is all about money.

  6. nnn says:

It’s totally immoral and out of basic sanity !

Disrespecting something as sacred as Death and the Dead. Wow, It’s beyond despicable.

  7. Maritza says:

MJ lived like a king and spent like one, in the end he was broke and never payed his bills, even the Encino home where his mother lives had a $4 million dollar mortgage. I don’t blame her for asking the nanny if he had left any money around. If they feel the need to charge tickets is because that’s the only way they will be able to pay all the costs of the funeral arrangements.

  8. Diana says:

Tickets will be sold, products will be hawked. This isn’t a memorial, but another LA production.

I don’t believe MJ would have been buried at Neverland, (health and safety regs), nor would the property become another Graceland. This is ag country, not zoned for commercial use, narrow road access.

  9. M says:

Gives new meaning to the phrase, “Pay your respects”.

  10. geronimo says:

    @M – well said.

  11. dark says:

I hope this isn’t true. It’s too sick to be true

  12. someone says:

If they can’t afford an elaborate send off, then they should make it simple, with close family and friends, not this hugh spectacle!

  13. Julia says:

If they are charging to get in, then anybody who loves and respects MJ, don’t go to his funeral… It’s a shame that his greedy hungry father disrespected him in life and now in DEATH!

  14. Just me says:

I live in Los Angeles and I would like to know where can I get these tickets for his funeral. I heard on news, it will be free tickets.

  15. Candi says:

    Tickets to attend a funeral?

Is this the doing of Joe Jackson, because he is a real prick, and I only think he and Catherine want the children for Micheal’s money.

Micheal Jackson must be rolling in his grave.

Paying to attend a funeral isnt very Christian like, however,Joe and Catherine are Mormons, and those Mormons are always out to make a buck.

    Sickening.

  16. Samantha W. says:

You people are sick!!! Instead of talking about and worring about what Michael did that was bad…focus on te good..Michael is dead and you people still treat him like he didnt matter…like he didnt make a difference…well newsflash HE DID..instead of talking about somebody elses life worry about yours…Michael changed history..he made music in his own way and we all loved it…i wake up everyday wishing he was here and maybe i could have at least met him and honestly i cant say that i ever will because hes gone…and i will not stand here and let you people say these things when you didnt see it Michaels point of view or his family…..i dont think they’re trying to get money out of his funeral..they’re are giving the fans a chance to see Michael one last time because he is the greatest icon i know…im goin to miss him and im soo SICK of people sayig bad things about him..when he is dead. R.I.P Michael Jackson

  17. Diane Archibeque says:

I live in Southern California, and wish I could attend the viewing but for a price I can not. Only watch it on TV along with many other fans and wish I was their. I’ll never forget this. It’s still hard believing this is happening.
And about the burial site … It would be wonderful for California to change its rules/laws and allow the burial to be at Neverland for Michael. “Michael’s Happy Place.” And let the money help his children just like Priscella did for Elvis’ daughter Lisa.

  18. JOYCE ANN says:

MICHAEL MADE THE GUINES BOOK WORLD RECORDS FOR BEING THE BIGGEST GIVER. HE GAVE MUCH TO MANY SO WHERE IS THE BEEF?
THERE WOULD BE NO QUESTION IF IT WERE A PRESIDENT OR CONGRESS MEMBER. EVEN THEY HAVEN’T GIVEN AS MUCH AS HE SO AGAIN I ASK, WHERE IS THE BEEF? HE DESERVES IT NO MATTER WHAT THE COST WAS.WHAT THE WORLD CAN DO IS PRAY FOR HIS FAMILY AND LET HIM REST IN PEACE. ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT IT IS A GOOD THING THAT THE DEAD KNOW NOTHING CAUSE IF THEY DID, WELL THE WORLD WOULD HAVE HURT HIM AGAIN BIG TIME!! PEOPLE NEVER GET ENOUGH OF BASHING AND WE GOT THE MEDIA TO THANK. AS LONG AS THEY MAKE A DOLLAR THEY DON’T CARE WHO THEY HURT. THEY WON’T PRINT THIS WILL THEY?

  19. I started to enjoy Michael a lot lately. I sometimes wish i would have started that before he died :(. RIP

  20. I hope this isn’t true. It’s too sick to be true
