Cynthia Nixon pressures Sarah Jessica Parker to fully support gay rights

Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon were friends before they even signed on to Sex and the City, more than a decade ago. They knew each other from being in the theatre community, and SJP can remember a time when Cynthia was exclusively with men. But now that Cynthia’s life-partner/fiancé is a lady, Cynthia has been moved to become a stronger, more vocal gay rights advocate. Cynthia wants her old friend SJP to lend her name more fully to the cause – specifically the cause of gay marriage:

Gay rights advocate and about-to-be lesbian bride Cynthia Nixon’s putting the squeeze on buddy Sarah Jessica Parker, lobbying her to help push for gay marriage rights – but Sarah’s pushing right back!

Cynthia, who’s hoping to wed galpal of five years Christine Marinoni, “believes Sarah’s high profile will really help the cause,” a pal says – “but she also knows the star has her hands full with her new twins, just born by a surrogate mother. Still, she’s making it personal and keeping the pressure on.”

Busy mom Sarah, who wants to help, compromised – promising Cynthia she’ll show up if there’s a major fundraiser or other event convenient to her New York stomping grounds.

[From National Enquirer, print edition, Mike Walker’s column, July 20 2009]

I’m not sure what I think of this – Cynthia and SJP have always seemed very close, and I believe SJP has always been pretty active in the gay rights movement. It seems a no-brainer that Sarah Jessica would already be there to support her friend. It seems like the Enquirer might be making a mountain out of a molehill – or could there be more to this? Now that the second SATC film is due out next year, could it be that SJP is wary of alienating a large part of the potential audience by coming out publicly as some kind of gay marriage crusader?

SJP already supports gay rights, she married a gay man, for crying out loud! LOL.

  2. FashionChallenged says:

(if this situation is true, but I doubt it) Cynthia has absolutely no right to pressure her friend to do anything. Asking is one thing, but “pressuring” as they said, is another. This sounds like Cynthia is trying to guilt SJP into joining by saying ‘if you’re my friend you’ll campaign for me’. SJP has a family and a life of her own. She could have a million reasons to not want to get involved heavily in activism, and her decision should have no impact on their friendship. I hope this isn’t true.

  3. HEB says:

I think SJP would do her part for this cause, but she’s pretty busy right now, she has the right to have her own priorities.

  4. Iggles says:

I know this sound shallow, but Cynthia’s partner is incredible unattractive. But to each their own. I wish them the best..

  5. Dirty Martini says:

No doubt Cynthia would love to see more support for gay marraige wherever she can get it. Can’t blame or fault her.

But SJP has always been just a bit of a prude in certain ways in how she conducts herself, particularly over the last 10 years. On some level, I think she will draw the line at being totally “out there” with her complete and full and engaged support.

Her reference to her peers as a formal “Ms.” (remember her comments at Natasha Richardson’s funeral?), her refusal to be seen without a bra on SATc, just other vibes I get say to me she’s got a stick up her backside.

    LOL @ anastasiaB!

This all sounds like something and nothing. Who would she be alienating? S&TC has always been very pro-gay, very gay-friendly, and aren’t most (if not all) of the S&TC writers gay?

  7. Annie says:

What does refusing to go braless have to do with anything?

I call bullshit on this story. Plain and simple bullshit.

  8. Neelyo says:

I think the people who are against gay marriage are probably not the audience for SEX & THE CITY anyway, so I doubt Parker is worried about losing her audience. Seems like a non-story.

  9. Cinderella says:

I think the Enquirer is pulling this story out of their butt. The theater is such a huge part of Sarah’s life and certainly Cynthia Nixon is not the only gay activist she knows. I can’t imagine her not supporting gay marriage rights from day one.

  10. Ron says:

I have never known SJP not to support gay rights. She doesn’t need to attend every event or even issue a statement. Besides, SATC is the GAYEST show ever. Produced, directed, and written by gay men. So if you are the star od that vehicle, you better support your girls!

  11. the original kate says:

anastasia – that’s exactly what i was thinking! lol.

  12. I agree they are making a mountain out of a molehill. First commenters comment is really funny lol

“her refusal to be seen without a bra on SATc”

I can’t really see you logic.
So she doesn’t want to be exploited and sees herself as an actress and not a cheap stripper, so you assume she may not be supportive of gay rights?

I do think Sarah Jessica Parker should be as vocal as she can about this issue.

It is very important to make sure that gays have equal rights and especially since she is a friend to Cynthia who is deprived of her equal rights.

I can see SJP as a bit calculating and thinking about the audience, but this is way too important and personal for her friend.

  14. Rosanna says:

Pressuring friends into doing something is WRONG, period. Besides, if a religious person (like a Jehowah witness or Mormon) would pressure her friends into fundraising for her cause she would be called a Jesus freak. If a gay person, or a PETA activist, does it then it’s all right. The double standard is disturbing. How about to each person his/her own fundraising with no pressure from public opinion, celebrities, families or friends? Too good to be true.

  15. Diablo says:

And what if SJP says no? Are Cynthia and her LGBT Mafia friends going to give her the Dr. Laura Treatment? Seems like that’s what happens to anyone who isn’t fully supportive of the gay lifestyle.

  16. nelly says:

Blaaaaaahhhhh! The only thing i have to say about this story is that they shouldn’t make a second SATC. The first one was boring and the second is going to be pretty boring too. Time is gone, Samantha, Charlotte, Miranda and Carrie! Just sit, marry, have children and wait for your grandchildren.

Ps- Iggles, you’re not being shallow. Cynthia’s partner is really unattractive. But i think Cynthia must been pretty sick of men to change her sexual preferences. I understand.

  17. Ned says:

While I agree that PETA have lost it and took things to the extreme, supporting gay rights is a different matter.

    It’s about equality for all.

and Diablo- being gay is not a “lifestyle”, not is it a choice.

It is what they are, not something the chose to adopt as a lifestyle.

They should receive all the rights as anyone else who choses to have a family.
I can’t think of reason that SJP would not support fully her friend and that cause.
