Lindsay Lohan is losing her hair because of her dye jobs and extensions

fp_3342162_lohan_lindsay_ako_073009

I have a hell of a lot of empathy for Lindsay Lohan. And you never hear me say that. But Lindsay has beaten the crap out of her hair over the years, in addition to living a pretty hard life – by choice. Thanks to frequent dye jobs and extensions (likely coupled with poor dietary standards and heavy alcohol and drug use) her hair is so thin that you can see her scalp. Whenever I see photos of Lindsay I’ve always been impressed with how thick and pretty her hair is, but it turns out that’s just because of all her extensions. Which is one of the best ways to make sure you keep on losing your hair – and of course it rarely looks good up close.

Lindsay Lohan is losing her hair at an alarming rate!

After years of abusing various hair products — dyes & extensions, etc. — the Mean Girls actress’ scalp is starting to show.

And that’s not all — Lohan usually leaves a trail of red hair wherever she goes!

“Lindsay has done so much to her hair, it’s a wonder she hasn’t lost it all!” an insider told American tabloid the National Enquirer. “She overprocesses it and gets too many extensions, which often rip her real hair out.

“You know Lindsay has been around when you see these long red hairs everywhere.”

[From Showbiz Spy]

Ick. The trail of long red hairs everywhere made me think of Tina Fey’s comment about Paris Hilton’s hair looking like a Fraggle. She said when Paris was hosting SNL they’d “find what just looked like nasty wads of Barbie hair on the stairs.” Shedding some hair is inevitable, and if it’s long it’s worse. But there’s a line between normal and disgusting.

Last summer – I remember, a fateful day in August – I decided my naturally light blonde hair had gotten a bit too dark, and thus it was time to do something about it. Having never dyed my hair and being warned to fear it by my mother, I decided to go with a safer option. Well, what I thought was a safer option. I bought some Sun In, which claimed it would naturally and safely lighten my hair. I followed the directions on the box, and to my delight it looked great. Until a few days later when I decided it wasn’t quite evenly light. So I did a little more. And a bit more three weeks later when I thought it had darkened again, even though the box says the lightening is permanent. And a few more times after that.

Then I noticed my hair started shedding a lot more than usual. I mean all-out falling out. What I’d thought was natural was actually hydrogen peroxide without the advantage of immediate deep conditioning like when you dye your hair. And while I was trying to play it safe and not overdo it by spraying my hair gradually, I was just gradually frying it instead of all at once, which actually made it a little less obvious and easier to ignore.

So I’ve spent the last year obsessively deep conditioning my hair while trying every product on the market to thicken it. Between being so weak, light colored (thanks Sun In!) and thin, I’m left with just a light crop of toddler fuzz – albeit a long one. It’s definitely growing in thicker, but it’ll take years to grow it long enough that it’s noticeable. I stare in envy at girls on the train with thick, lustrous hair – the exact same kind I used to have. Really, hair can rebel against you for any number of reasons. In Lindsay’s case, it’ll ultimately be a lot better if she lays off the extensions and deals with the fact that it’s going to look thin and mousy for a while but will eventually be a lot healthier. Ug. I just had sympathy for Lohan. I feel sorta queasy now.

Here’s Lohan and her newly-blonde extensions on July 31st. Images thanks to Fame Pictures .

I hope she gets her act together!

It’s very telling that her “mom” is no where to be seen as her daughter the one that she whored out has spun out of control.

Hair extensions are the evil work of the devil!

Didn’t they already use this story for Britney Spears?

    the crack doesn’t help either

You know it’s stories like these that make me hopeful that – while in my 20’s I don’t get to have the big nice boobies that stay afloat even when you’re lying down, or grow out my short hair fast enough to catch up with the barbie dolls – I may be better off when we all turn 35. But who cares about 35?!?!? I’ll practically be in my coffin at that point and no one will be looking anyway because there will always be 20 year olds. god.

and I’m kidding about 35 being old so chill out.

  6. Jenna says:

Didn’t the same thing happen to Victoria Beckham? Even though I remember her saying David accidentally pulled it out during sex. Ehh, poor Lohan?

  7. Renee says:

Sun In!! They still make that stuff? I had an unfortunate experience when I was a kid, horrible orange memories.

  8. Diane says:

Is it my imagination, or are there deep scars on her right wrist? They look fresh and along the vein. Hmmmm.

  9. yae says:

Would she just go red already? she’d be gorgeous in copper. That blonde with the freckles is painful to look at.

  10. Deborah says:

Yikes! After reading this article, I’m getting paranoid about my dyed hair! hmmm…go grey or go bald?

  11. Wench. says:

I was just reading her Twitter feed and found this gem about her mother:

‘…She’s the best woman a girl could ask to have as a mother. True story.’

Yeah, closely tied with Kate Gosselin and Katie Price.

  12. gg says:

JayBird! sweetie! Do not use those products that claim to thicken hair or “de-frizz! They will only dry it out beyond repair. All they do is open up the cuticle, which makes the hair shaft open up like pine bark and then it WILL make massive split ends and break off.

Get some nice gentle Matrix shampoo for colored/processed or at least “normal” hair and their conditioner for NORMAL hair, and use “leave-in” conditioner on the ends. I promise you your hair will gleam and look gorgeous and not strawlike on the ends. But those bad ends will have to grow out because there is no way to repair hair.

I’ve had very long hair all my life, dated hairdressers that used me as a guinea pig, and have, in the past, put it through every bad trick in the book, and found what works (above), so for the past 20 years my hair has been very long and glossy and I get complimented on it all the time.

But you got to quit using the bad shampoo. Pantene included! Bad!

    Good luck darlin.

  13. Lem says:

    agree w/ daniel

agree w/ gg. I bought the pantene beautiful lengths. Boy, for a shampoo designed for going long… you’d be better off with Mane n Tail (not entirely kidding) it stripped all of the elasticity from my hair in just one bottle. I had a good 3-5 inches of give per strand. Now I’m lucky if it has a half inch a give before it snaps. boo hoo.
Although I have very good luck w/ Vo5. is matrix the green one?

  14. Lem says:

I’m still waiting for Brit Brit to give up the extentions. We all know you shaved your head so just own it. I imaginw her real hair is a cute length by now.

  15. Sox says:

This story had been a blind item a few months ago-it has been happening for a while now.

  16. Susette says:

gg- You’ve done a great service here, today. I went through a bad hair period a while back. Now I’ll have to remember the Matrix. JayBird, I would also suggest taking multivitamins if you don’t already. That helped me, too.

not to mention the crack cocaine.

  18. Nova says:

    To the Author:

Quit your bitchen you did it in your kitchen.

That’s why you consult a professional hair stylist to color your hair for you. They have trained on what the chemicals are and how to properly mix them. Plus they can teach you how to care for your hair in between touch ups.

    Sheesh.

  19. gg says:

    Cheers, Susette – anybody I can help – I am a one-woman research team.

Most of the shampoos and conditioners they sell in the grocery and drugstores are detergents that will strip the crap out of your hair – beware of the marketing BS. Any product that has to resort to “fun” tv adverts, fruit, flowery scents, veggies and “silk proteins” etc., etc., is going to be crap. Nobody needs food in their hair products – this is a sham. Also, PH level is important. I was amazed at the stuff the women at my office were using. They bought into every bad product out there and fell for the lying advertising.

If you use a flatiron, try to limit it, but also use some leave-in conditioner designed for flatiron users. Be careful with natural products and do your research – just because it’s “green” does not mean it can’t strip your hair – just pick another product that won’t injure your hair or the environment.

Don’t use rubber bands limit ponytail and scrunchie use – they break hair. In the summer when it’s hot, I section mine into 2-4 sections, twist or braid loosely, and clip it with a few smaller plastic claws or 2 big ones. Or frenchbraid it and use a covered ponytail holder at the end.

Be sure and check that you are not allergic to any product though before you invest in any. All this same stuff goes for guys’ hair too btw.

  20. Rabbit says:

Anorexia – whether deliberate or a side effect of Adderal abuse (another Lohan blind item) – will cause hair loss.

  21. crazydaisy says:

    At least she’s skinny. lol

And really, Jenna, David Beckam pulled it out during sex? What does that have to do with hair?!

  22. gladys kravitz says:

THANK YOU GG! and all the commenters above…I think you may have saved my hair! –
THese are Great Hair tips and I will definitely be more aware of what I am using on my hair and my hair products from now on.
I will try the MATRIX as you suggested GG- and maybe even the VO5…and see how they work.

One vitamin I am using that is helping my hair is PHYTOPHANERE fortifying vitamin capsules which I have found have been wonderful in helping my hair get thicker and stronger. Check Amazon if you are interested. The Phyto line of hair products I have found have worked beautifully for me.

    Thanks again GG!

  23. G. says:

Hey gg: Is Herbal Essence any good for hair? I use it, and I’m just wondering whether or not to switch to another kind of shampoo.

God, Lindsay’s hair disgusts me. Of course it’s fake. Pretty much everything on her is fake.

  24. GatsbyGal says:

Diane – I see the cuts too. WTF? Celebitchy, can you confirm this?

  25. Aspen says:

Her hair is falling out because she’s 20 pounds underweight and addicted to drugs…not because she gets it colored.

    C’mon people.

  26. gg says:

you’re welcome! 🙂 So glad to help. I would ask a hairdresser about which VO-5 thing you use, but last time I checked, natural warm oil treatments are going to be appreciated by your hair (as long as they don’t say they’re for “deep” conditioning – the “deep” part shouldn’t be disturbed or it will just dry out to the inside of the shaft). I’ve heard of people using oils from their cupboard – will google.

Funny you mentioned Herbal Essences — my longtime hairdresser did PH strip tests on several brands of supermarket shampoo because he wanted to find one he could recommend that would not strip all the color he so carefully foiled in. The only one he found at the time (and this was several years ago) WAS Herbal Essence, so, that one is probably good. There may be others but PH strips are not something I have lying around.

My mom is in hospital and wanted me to bring her shampoo from her shower yesterday. To my horror she has this bottle of “Thicker Fuller Hair” — this has to be poison 😆 – and it’s more expen$ive per ounce than the Matrix Biolage I get in the big bottle that lasts me several months.

My hairdresser is using this new thing called a “wet brush” to comb out wet hair and gave me one. I love it. It’s like those old wire wig brushes, only it’s very flexible plastic. It’s not splitting my hair either and it seems very gentle. Feels really nice and scratchy on your scalp too. Might sound gross, but I leave my hair in my brush probably longer than most people – it helps distribute the oils. Also avoid excessive brushing – makes split ends. I gently untangle with my fingers before I brush mine – saves wear and tear.

Also don’t hold your hairdryer on Hot on one spot on your hair – it’ll burn like mad. Move the wind around, and use the “Cool” button to set the curls if you use a round brush, before you unwind the hair.

    kisses, tips from gg

  27. gg says:

Aspen, it’s really easy to make your hair fall out when you get it bleached Nordic blonde with extensions. Even without the crack.

She obviously doesn’t follow the golden rule of hair coloring: if you get your hair colored, foiled or any other chemical process, for god’s sake use products for colored/processed hair or I will have to look at your faded, dry, pitiful, crispy green hair and say tsk. she failed. Skip the plastic manicure and get some decent mane products, because we don’t see your nails, we see your hair. From a distance. 😀

  28. gg says:

@ Diane and Gatsby – I think the “along the vein” marks are a tattoo. Maybe it’s the one with the Marilyn Monroe quote.

I see what look like a lot of cigarette burns though. The child needs a lot of help.

  29. kelbear says:

The cuts you are talking about are really just a tattoo

  30. Elle says:

I grew up in the 1980’s and boy you should have seen my hair! It was BIG and BLOND! At one point it was so damaged that when wet it felt like it was melting. I smartened up and have been gentler with it and have use only salon products like Matrix, Redken, Aquage, etc. for years. My favorite was Biolage because I felt like it didn’t weigh down my fine, thin, fragile hair.

Then I found it. The best shampoo/conditioner combo I’ve ever used. I’ve been using Sally Hershberger for several months now and my hair has NEVER felt so soft and healthy.

  31. lady garden says:

    I use baby shampoo-it works a treat

on topic i agree with the posters re drugs-paul schofer recently said coke made his hair fall out

  32. Aspen says:

Gg…you are the own! An African-American friend of mine recommended olive oil to prevent damaged ends. When I balked she laughed at me and said white women know nothing about hair. Ha ha. I followed her advice with it a few times and had some success with reducing splitting after a trim.

I switched to Pureology’s shampoo and conditioner…the purple hydrate ones…about 3 years ago, and I have very fragile fine hair. This has improved the overall health of my hair, but I still have way too much breakage, and maintaining length is difficult.

I have, believe it or not, never tried working out knots with my fingers before brushing. I will be doing that from now on. It sounds like a really good idea.

  33. Jag says:

Another good thing to do is to not use shampoo, but rather “shampoo” with your conditioner. Most people don’t need to use a shampoo and a conditioner, because their hair doesn’t get dirty enough.

The book “Curly Girl” suggests putting the conditioner on your dry hair, clipping it up out of the way, showering regularly, then washing the conditioner out. Works for me, anyway.

Don’t use really warm water, but tepid water, and finish with a cool – not cold – rinse. Emu oil shampoos and conditioners are good, too, because they’re very moisturizing, and there is a line of Olive Oil hair and scalp products that work well.

As for thickening hair, and having it grow faster, an option is to get your hair cut during the right time of the moon’s phase, on the right sign. (Increase of the moon, on a water sign.) For this month to have it grow thicker and faster, it would be the 17th; for just thicker would be: August 12, 13, 16-19. Even a little trim works.

    Good tips gg. Thanks. 🙂

  34. gg says:

Oh yeah ^^^^ really good points Jag! (or Jay – can’t read your name for the superimposed number) – don’t use the hot, hot water or lather like mad – don’t need it and washes out the oils that you need. Remember you’re only cleaning your scalp, not the entire hairshaft – the ends need moisture, not soap.

The soap rinsing through your ends when you wash out your scalp is more than enough to “clean” your ends.

I’m worried about that baby shampoo user though – it’s not for adult hair. Course, if you have short hair and get it cut often, the dryness may work for your ‘do somehow.

The marks on her arm look like writing to me… not cutting scratches. So, that’s one good thing.

  36. Mary Jane says:

I had guessed Parasite Hilton when I recently read a blind item about someone losing their hair… HoHan was my 2nd choice…

  37. Magsy says:

She’s so weird. Why doesn’t she pull a Britney and shave it all off?

  38. skeptical says:

so herbal essences gets an all-clear? yay! That’s my fave brand, I’ve been using it for years.
I do have baby-fine hair, and it’s long, but I grew it out so I could wear it up a lot. I love those old Victorian hairstyles.

I do use sunsilk when i want to wear my hair down. Otherwise I’d have a very limp silkysoft curtain of hair with no volume whatsoever.

heh here’s hoping sunsilk isn’t bad, eh?

  39. gg says:

I guess the only way to know for certain would be litmus strip tests on the products to test alkalynity. It’s easier to screw up your hair with the wrong shampoo than with the wrong conditioner, so it might be okay to use “normal” store conditioners as long as they don’t have any “deep” conditioning or thickening claims. Conditioners generally just coat the hair and that does help protect it.
