I was totally a hardcore fan of Sex and the City when it was on HBO. I absolutely hated the movie, though, and I hated the post HBO-SATC message that somehow the show was totally empowering for women, or that these women were modern heroines, all of that stuff. I watched the show because I thought the characters were interesting, the stories and the dialogue were funny and often touching, and because of the fantasy-escapism of the clothes, the apartments, and the men. I have most of the seasons on DVD, and I watch them when I need a pick-me-up, but I don’t think it helps to glorify the characters or their actions. Because when it comes down to it, Carrie Bradshaw was a mess. She’s was a vapid, judgmental, self-defeating, immature, self-abusing narcissist whose only redeeming quality was her devotion and love for her friends. That was actually the brilliance of the show – everyone knows women like that, every woman has some of those qualities and everyone has a friend like that. In that way, the show was relatable.
I went off on that tangent all to say this: Carrie had a good thing with Aidan (John Corbett), and she totally screwed it up. When Carrie cheated on Aidan with Mr. Big, I hated her. When they got back together, and he proposed, I knew she would screw it up. He was too good for her. She was too high-maintenance and self-absorbed for him. Ever since John Corbett’s appearance on the show, I’ve thought of him with great affection, but I know he’s not really Aidan. This story just confirms it:
“Sex and the City” hunk John Corbett, swilling Mexican food and tequila shots with guy pals at Casa Vega in Sherman Oaks, CA came on like your average jerk barfly when a sexy Brazilian femme fan begged him to pose for a pic – then screamed and twisted away as he grabbed her South of the Border, squeezed hard and hooted: “Hey, Brazil, where you going? Come here and give me some!”
Escaping from Corbett’s creepy clutches, La Tourista dashed out the door. Said an unamused galpal: “We were shocked. Corbett really manhandled her!”

Totally ridiculous. I would have slapped the sh-t out of him. There’s absolutely no explanation for this kind of gross behavior – not even if he was totally loaded on tequila. Is it worse if I mention that I think he’s still with Bo Derek? I think they’re still together. Ugh… I hate when an actor who plays a beloved character acts so douchey. Maybe it’s not true. I hope so.

I know it’s a show and whatever, but what really bugged me about the carrie aidan situation was how afterwards she kept repeating (eg. nina katz) that she would never have done anything to deliberately hurt him. That’s when I started to get turned off from the whole carrie bradshaw phenomenon.
As for John Corbett, that’s royally skeevy. “hey Brazil!”? Gross.

This was during all of the bru-haha when SJP didn’t thank Matthew Broderick during her acceptance speech because ALLEGEDLY Broderick was wrapped up in THE Producers and playing around with his cast mate Cady Huffman. Sounds like one big juicy mess doesn’t it? I really like John Corbett also but I think he can get a little wild from time to time when his inner beast comes out. I hope he doesn’t hurt Bo Derek. Groping civilians is very low classy (to borrow a Lainey term). Anyway, Bo seems like a nice person. I agree with all of the above that CB said.

Kaiser, I agree with your assessment about SATC. Carrie was a hot mess! Remember this particular episode? Carrie met a great guy and the morning after, she was alone in his apartment for a few hours. As soon as he left she went crazy searching through his stuff, looking for flaws. Yea, she’s nutty.
Aidan was definitely too good for her. Although it broke my heart how they ended. Having him show up with a baby was tantamount to killing his character off! No way he would ever cheat on or leave his baby’s mama for Carrie. Yep, it was devastating..
However, that season was hilarious with Berger the “Post It” guy. Worst. Break up. Ever!

Iggles – Yes, I remember that episode – people always acted like “Who wouldn’t want to date Carrie?” but I always hated the way she acted in relationships. She was only “real” with her girlfriends.
As for Jack Berger, I love me some Ron Livingston, but I hated that character. He was such a douche.

Personally, I think Bo Derek looks wonderful for her age. Let’s knock off the age insults, because, people, sooner or later, we’re all going to be there – and beyond.
Bo Derek looks great. Why she’s with him, I do not know. He seems to be such a cad and he certainly isn’t aging as well as Bo.

That’s when I lost everything I liked about her character. She’s not pretty enough to act like a complete c***, and I too, thought Aidan was waaaay to good for her.
ok, i am finding it hard to believe this story mainly because i’ve never heard anything like this about him before. if it were, say, charlie sheen i’d believe it in a heartbeat. i hope it isn’t true. as for carrie and aidan, i loved aidan and thought carrie was a bitch to him from the beginning. but my boyfriend is very aidan-like so maybe i just took it personally. did anyone else notice that carrie became bitchier with each season? it all started around season 4. when miranda had a baby and was struggling carrie was going on and on about nina katz, when samantha had cancer carrie was going on and on about petrovsky. in the movie i found carrie to be unbearable in her self-involvement. it’s interesting that as miranda, charlotte and even sam got softer and more complex each season, carrie got more and more narcissistic and cartoonish. i actually think charlotte was the strongest character because she knew what she wanted out of life and went for it, regardless of what anyone else thought. anyway, love the show and hated the movie.
the original kate – that was one of the biggest reasons I hated the movie – it was two f-cking hours of Carrie whining and acting like a gd victim. There should have been so much more about Charlotte, Miranda and Sam in there.
My favorite was always Miranda, because I thought she was the most realistic character, and I always identified with her.
I live in Wheeling, WV- where Corbett is from. He comes to town now and again and shows up at local bars acting like a jackass. Seems to be his M.O. I once met him and he acted like a jerk because I accidentally bumped into his shoulder at the very crowded bar.

I live in Canada, where they shoot a lot of movies for cheaper, and they think they are on the DL even when they are in a populated club. This guy has been in town. He is an extreeeeme womanizer, and totally douchey about it. He isnt afraid to bring up Bo either.
